AR glasses connect directly when the host device’s USB-C port carries DisplayPort video, commonly called USB-C DP Alt Mode. A USB-C connector that supports only charging or data will not produce an image. Use the glasses’ supplied video cable, verify the exact port and model in the manufacturers’ compatibility guides, and choose a model-specific adapter or dock for HDMI, DisplayPort, or Nintendo Switch connections.

The same rule applies to phones, laptops, desktops, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Legion Go, and other handhelds: identify the host’s video output first, then match the cable, adapter, power, and charging requirements of the glasses. The connector shape alone is never proof of compatibility.

What you need to check before connecting

Three separate pieces must be compatible: the host’s video output, the glasses model, and the connection accessory. Start with the specifications for the exact phone, computer, handheld, and glasses model rather than relying on a generic USB-C or AR-glasses claim.

USB-C must support DisplayPort video

Look for wording such as “DisplayPort over USB-C,” “DP Alt Mode,” or, on some computers, “Thunderbolt 4.” A port described only as USB-C charging, USB data, or USB 3.x cannot send a display signal to the glasses. Some devices have several USB-C ports with different capabilities, so use the one identified for video output.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

The cable must carry video

The included glasses cable is the safest choice. If it is lost or replaced, select a full-featured USB-C cable explicitly rated for DisplayPort or video transmission. A cable that charges a phone or transfers files can still fail to carry a display signal.

Power is part of the connection

Many glasses have no built-in battery and draw power from the connected phone, computer, handheld, or dock. The XREAL xbx a01 guide specifies 5 V/1 A power for spatial large-screen use. Host battery life therefore varies with brightness, content, and usage; there is no universal runtime figure.

Connect AR glasses directly to a compatible phone

A direct phone connection is usually the simplest setup, but only if the phone’s USB-C port supports DP video.

Android phones with DP Alt Mode

  1. Confirm in the phone’s specifications or the glasses maker’s compatibility guide that the exact USB-C port outputs DisplayPort video.
  2. Connect the supplied USB-C glasses cable to the glasses and to that video-capable phone port.
  3. Allow the phone to detect an external display if an on-screen prompt appears. The glasses should then mirror or extend the phone display according to the model and phone operating system.
  4. If the image does not appear, disconnect and reconnect at the verified video port, then test with the manufacturer’s supplied cable.

Only selected Android phones are listed in the cited XREAL compatibility guides. A phone can have USB-C and still be incompatible, so check the exact regional model and software support before buying an adapter or glasses.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

iPhone models

The cited XREAL guides list iPhone 15, iPhone 16, and later models as direct USB-C examples, with a stated iPhone 16E exception in the One Series guide. Do not infer that every iPhone with a USB-C connector supports the same glasses features; verify the model-specific guide. Older Lightning iPhones need a different adapter path and are not covered by the direct USB-C procedure above.

What to do when the phone powers the glasses but shows no picture

  • Recheck that the phone port supports DP video rather than only charging or data.
  • Use the supplied cable or a replacement cable explicitly rated for video.
  • Remove intermediate hubs that may pass power but not DisplayPort.
  • Confirm that the glasses model is listed for that phone and operating-system combination.

Connect to a laptop or desktop PC

USB-C or Thunderbolt 4 laptop

A laptop can connect directly when its USB-C port carries DP Alt Mode. The ROG XREAL R1 documentation also identifies Thunderbolt 4 as a direct route for supported computers.

  1. Check the laptop’s port markings and specifications for DisplayPort output or Thunderbolt 4.
  2. Plug the glasses’ video cable into the glasses and the identified laptop port.
  3. Wait for the operating system to detect an external monitor. Use the operating system’s display settings to mirror, extend, or select the glasses as the active display.
  4. If there is no image, try another USB-C port only after confirming that it also supports video; do not assume all ports are equivalent.

Refresh rate and other display features depend on the laptop’s output capability, graphics hardware, settings, and content. The ROG XREAL R1 documentation notes that its 240 Hz mode varies with hardware, settings, and content, so the glasses’ headline capability is not a guarantee for every computer.

Desktop PC, console, or laptop with HDMI or DisplayPort

HDMI and full-size DisplayPort do not plug directly into the glasses’ USB-C video input. Use an HDMI-to-USB-C adapter or the dock specifically specified for the glasses model. These accessories often need a separate USB connection for power or data and an external power supply.

For ROG XREAL R1, the official connection route is the ROG Control Dock for HDMI or DisplayPort sources, including desktop computers and consoles.

  1. Connect the source computer or console’s HDMI or DisplayPort cable to the Control Dock’s matching video input.
  2. Connect the dock’s USB cable as instructed for power and data.
  3. Attach the dock to external power; video alone may not provide the power the glasses require.
  4. Connect the glasses to the dock with the glasses cable.
  5. Select the correct input on the source if it has more than one display output, then wait for the glasses to initialize.

Do not assume the Control Dock works with another glasses model. Adapter pinouts, power delivery, and firmware support differ by product.

Connect AR glasses to handheld gaming devices

Steam Deck, Steam Deck OLED, ROG Ally, and Legion Go

The cited XREAL xbx a01 and ROG XREAL R1 guides list Steam Deck and Steam Deck OLED as direct-connection examples when the USB-C port supports DP output. The ROG documentation also lists ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go under the same DP Alt Mode condition. Connect the supplied cable to the handheld’s video-capable USB-C port, not to a charging-only port.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the handheld’s technical specifications for USB-C DisplayPort output.
  2. Connect the glasses directly with the included video cable.
  3. Open the handheld’s display settings if you need to select mirror or extend behavior.
  4. Monitor battery drain: the glasses draw power from the handheld during use.

A handheld may have one USB-C port that must handle charging and video simultaneously. If using the glasses prevents charging, use a model-compatible hub or dock that explicitly supports simultaneous charging and DisplayPort output.

Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED

Switch support is accessory- and model-specific. The ROG XREAL R1 guide routes Switch through the ROG Control Dock. The XREAL xbx a01 guide calls for the official XREAL Hub, while the One Series guidance describes using the Hub with an external power supply or power bank because of the Switch USB-C voltage limits.

  1. Identify the exact glasses model and follow that model’s Switch instructions.
  2. Use the specified dock or Hub rather than a generic USB-C splitter.
  3. Connect the Switch video path, glasses, USB power/data cable, and external power exactly as the accessory guide shows.
  4. If the Switch remains on its own screen or the glasses stay dark, verify every power and video connection before changing settings.

These differing instructions are why a Switch accessory cannot be treated as universal across AR-glasses brands or product generations.

Choose the right connection route

Host output Typical route Important requirements
USB-C with DP Alt Mode Direct connection with the glasses’ USB-C video cable Exact port must support video; cable must be video-capable
Thunderbolt 4 Direct connection on supported computers Confirm the glasses guide lists the computer and that the port carries display output
HDMI Compatible HDMI-to-USB-C adapter or model-specified dock Adapter compatibility, USB power/data, and often external power
Full-size DisplayPort Model-specified dock or adapter Use the accessory named for the glasses; do not substitute an unverified USB-C converter
Nintendo Switch Product-specific Hub or dock Follow the glasses model’s instructions and provide external power where required
Wi-Fi projection without USB-C DP Wireless adapter route on products that support it Only applicable when the specific glasses and adapter support the host’s wireless projection

Power, charging, and battery behavior

AR glasses commonly receive power through the same connection that carries video. The XREAL xbx a01 and ROG XREAL R1 documentation explicitly state that those models do not have built-in batteries. A phone, laptop, or handheld therefore supplies both the display signal and operating power during direct use.

Plan for host battery drain

Brightness, refresh rate, displayed content, and the host’s power-management behavior affect consumption. A gaming handheld running a demanding title can lose charge faster than a phone showing a static document. No single battery-runtime estimate applies across hosts or glasses.

When simultaneous charging matters

If the host has only one USB-C port, direct glasses use may occupy the charging port. A compatible Hub or dock can provide a charging input while forwarding video, but only when the glasses model and accessory explicitly support that arrangement. The XREAL One Series guidance describes Hub use for simultaneous charging, and its Switch instructions call for external power or a power bank in supported setups.

Troubleshoot a black screen or intermittent image

Check the following in order. This sequence isolates the most common causes without replacing working equipment unnecessarily.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Verify video output: Confirm that the exact host port supports DisplayPort video or DP Alt Mode. USB-C shape alone is insufficient.
  2. Use the correct port: On laptops and handhelds, move the cable only to a port whose specifications also list video output.
  3. Check the cable: Use the supplied cable or a full-featured USB-C video cable. Charging-only cables can power accessories without carrying an image.
  4. Match the adapter: For HDMI or DisplayPort, confirm that the adapter or dock is specified for the exact glasses model. A dock made for one product is not automatically universal.
  5. Supply required power: Attach the dock’s USB power/data cable and external power as the guide requires. For Switch, follow the model-specific Hub or dock wiring.
  6. Reconnect in a clean order: Disconnect the glasses, power down the adapter or dock, reconnect the source video cable, attach power, then reconnect the glasses.
  7. Check display settings: Once detected, select mirror or extend mode in the host operating system. A working connection can appear blank if the host is set to an inactive display mode.
  8. Remove unsupported intermediates: Test without generic hubs, KVM switches, or extension cables that may not pass DP Alt Mode.

The ROG XREAL R1 troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends checking DP Alt Mode and using the Control Dock when USB-C video is unavailable.

Replacing a lost or damaged cable

Buy a USB-C cable that explicitly states DisplayPort or video transmission support and is suitable for the connector orientation and length required by the glasses. “USB-C charging cable” is not enough. Keep the original cable for troubleshooting: if the glasses work with it but not with the replacement, the replacement is the likely limitation.

Wireless alternatives when USB-C video is unavailable

Some products support a wireless-adapter route. The Rokid Air guide describes using a wireless adapter for a device that lacks DP over USB-C but offers Wi-Fi screen projection. This is not a general workaround for every AR-glasses model: the glasses, adapter, phone, and operating system must all support the same projection method. Wireless paths can also add setup steps and may not provide the same latency or feature set as a direct wired connection.

A practical decision checklist

  • Phone: Is the exact USB-C port DP-capable, and is the phone listed for the glasses model?
  • Laptop: Does the port support DP Alt Mode or Thunderbolt 4, and is the desired mirror/extend mode enabled?
  • Desktop or console: Does the model-specific HDMI/DisplayPort adapter or dock provide the required power and data connections?
  • Handheld: Does the USB-C port output DP, and will a Hub be needed to charge while using the glasses?
  • Switch: Does the glasses guide name a particular Hub or dock, and does the setup include the external power the guide requires?
  • Cable: Is it rated for video rather than only charging or data?
  • Features: Does the host output support the refresh rate and display modes you expect?

If any answer is unknown, verify it in the host manufacturer’s specifications and the glasses maker’s current compatibility guide before purchasing accessories. That check prevents the most expensive mistake: treating a physically compatible USB-C connector as a guaranteed video connection.
