There is no universal Android XR glasses pairing procedure published by Google. Google currently describes Android XR AI glasses as lightweight companion devices that connect to a primary device such as a smartphone, but the official material does not identify a consumer glasses model, required phone specifications, companion app, or first-use sequence. The exact glasses maker and model therefore determine how setup works. Identify that model first, then follow its current phone-compatibility and onboarding instructions rather than applying the setup for an XR headset or ordinary Bluetooth accessory.
What you can—and cannot—do from Google’s Android XR documentation
Google’s Android Enterprise help defines Android XR AI glasses as “Lightweight, companion devices that connect to a primary device, like a smartphone.” It also says that the glasses do not run the full Android XR operating system. That establishes the basic relationship: the phone is expected to provide the primary computing connection while the glasses act as a companion.
It does not establish a consumer-ready, model-independent setup recipe. The official pages reviewed through October 13, 2026 do not name a retail glasses model, list supported Android phone versions, identify a companion application, or specify which permissions and pairing controls a wearer must use. Those omissions matter because glasses makers can choose different association methods, apps, accounts, permissions, firmware requirements, and recovery procedures.
Consequently, instructions such as “open Bluetooth, tap the glasses’ name, and install this app” would be guesses unless they come from the documentation for your exact model. The same caution applies to button combinations, QR codes, Wi-Fi requirements, factory-reset steps, and claims that every Android phone is compatible.

First, identify which Android XR device you have
“Android XR” is used in several contexts. The following categories are related, but their setup paths are not interchangeable.
| Device or procedure | What the official guidance covers | Does it answer phone-to-glasses pairing? |
|---|---|---|
| AI glasses | Lightweight companion hardware connected to a primary device such as a smartphone; the glasses do not run the full Android XR operating system. | No model-specific consumer procedure is established. |
| Android XR headset | Physical adjustment, on-device onboarding, Wi-Fi selection, Google Account sign-in, recommended apps, screen lock, and headset settings. | No. This is headset setup, not glasses pairing. |
| Bluetooth accessory connected to an XR device | Quick Settings on the XR device, Bluetooth enabled, accessory put into its pairing mode, and on-screen confirmation. | No. The accessory is being connected to an XR device, not glasses to an Android phone. |
Look for the manufacturer name, model number, and hardware revision on the frame, charging case, packaging, or purchase record. A product described by a retailer as “Android XR glasses” may still use a maker-specific operating system, app, or cloud service. Do not substitute the instructions for another pair that looks similar.
Also distinguish a platform announcement from a shipping product. Google’s December 12, 2024 announcement discussed Android XR glasses prototypes and possible assistance, but it did not identify a universal retail model or publish a consumer onboarding sequence. A demonstration video, developer presentation, or retailer listing can describe intended capabilities without supplying the permissions, account binding, or reset process needed for daily use.
What you need before attempting setup
Gather the information below before changing phone settings. These checks prevent you from treating a missing app or unsupported phone as a Bluetooth failure.
- Exact model: Record the complete model name and, if shown, regional or hardware revision.
- Phone software: Note the Android version and the phone manufacturer’s model identifier. Use the glasses maker’s compatibility list as the authority.
- Required app: Install only the companion app named in the model’s own guide and obtain it from the distribution channel that guide specifies. An unnamed or unrelated app should not be treated as a requirement.
- Accounts: Check whether the maker requires an account, a Google Account, or a separate enterprise enrollment. Do not assume that signing into a headset completes glasses registration.
- Power: Charge the glasses and any case or bridge used by the model. A device that is off or in a shipping state cannot enter pairing mode.
- Permissions: Read the app’s requested permissions and the maker’s explanation of why they are needed. Android permission prompts vary by version.
- Network and updates: Confirm whether the maker requires internet access for account creation, firmware installation, maps, translations, or cloud features.
Keep the model’s manual available while you work. If its instructions conflict with a generic Android help page, use the model-specific instructions for the glasses.
A useful compatibility page should state more than “works with Android.” Look for a minimum Android release, named phone families or chip requirements if applicable, supported countries, app-store availability, account prerequisites, and whether a particular feature needs mobile data or cloud access. It should also explain how ownership is transferred, how a second phone is added, and what happens after a factory reset. If those details are absent, contact the maker rather than filling the gaps with assumptions.
A safe, model-dependent setup workflow
The sequence below is a framework for following a manufacturer’s guide. It is not a universal Android XR glasses procedure. The words “as specified by the maker” are intentional: the missing details are exactly where models differ.

- Confirm compatibility. Read the maker’s current phone and Android-version requirements for the exact model. Stop if your phone is outside the supported range; repeated Bluetooth attempts cannot overcome an unsupported platform.
- Prepare power and proximity. Charge the glasses as directed, turn them on using the documented control, and keep them close to the phone. Do not infer that a particular LED color or long-press duration means pairing mode unless the manual says so.
- Install the named companion software. Use the app and account path identified by the maker. If no official app or onboarding document exists for the model, there is not enough verified information to continue safely.
- Start association through the documented path. The maker may begin setup inside its app, through Android’s device picker, with a QR code, or with another method. Follow that exact path. Do not create a new Bluetooth pairing entry merely because the phone’s Bluetooth page is available.
- Put the glasses into pairing or association mode. Use the model’s stated control and watch for the confirmation it describes. Avoid guessed button sequences, because an incorrect reset or shutdown command can interrupt setup.
- Accept Android prompts deliberately. Approve only permissions and account requests explained by the model’s documentation. If a prompt requests access that the maker does not document, pause and verify the app’s identity and support page.
- Complete registration and updates. If the maker requires firmware, profile, or account setup, keep the glasses powered and near the phone until the process reports completion. Do not close the app or separate the devices during an update unless the instructions permit it.
- Test the functions you intend to use. Check the documented basics—such as audio, notifications, camera, assistant, directions, translations, or message summaries—only if your model advertises them. A successful association does not prove that every feature works without a data connection or an account.
- Save recovery information. Record the maker’s official re-pair, unpair, and factory-reset instructions. These differ by model and are preferable to deleting random Bluetooth entries or holding buttons until the glasses react.
During first setup, avoid changing several variables at once. If you switch accounts, clear app data, remove Bluetooth records, and reset the glasses in one session, you may erase useful diagnostic information. Note the exact error message, the phone model and Android version, and the step at which setup stops. Those details make a support request more useful.
Why the Android XR headset guide is not the glasses guide
Google’s “Set up your Android XR device” instructions describe a headset. They tell the wearer to make sure the headset has sufficient charge or is connected to a power adapter, follow the on-device setup, choose Wi-Fi, sign in to a Google Account, and finish recommended setup steps such as screen-lock configuration. Those are actions performed on the headset itself.
AI glasses are described separately as companion devices. The headset page does not tell a wearer how to discover glasses on an Android phone, which app to install for glasses, or how to place a particular pair into association mode. Following headset Wi-Fi or account steps cannot substitute for the glasses maker’s onboarding instructions.
The distinction is important when a support article uses “Android XR device” as a broad label. A headset may have its own display, home screen, Wi-Fi controls, and on-device account flow. Companion glasses may expose none of those controls and may rely on the phone app for configuration. Matching the wording of a help page is not enough; match the device category and connection direction.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why the Bluetooth accessory instructions do not answer this question
Google’s Bluetooth help page for Android XR explains how to connect an accessory to an XR device: open the XR device’s home screen, open Quick Settings, choose Bluetooth, turn it on, put the accessory into pairing mode according to that accessory’s guide, and follow the prompts. Previously paired accessories may reconnect automatically.
The direction of that connection is different from the title’s situation. In the help page, the XR device is the host and the accessory is the peripheral. In a phone-and-glasses scenario, the phone may be the primary device, while the glasses use a maker-defined app or association flow. The existence of a Bluetooth menu on an XR headset therefore does not prove that the same menu is the correct setup path for glasses on a phone.
Bluetooth visibility alone is not a compatibility test. A device can appear in Android settings yet still require an account, firmware update, special app, or authorization before its camera, microphone, notifications, or assistant functions work. Conversely, a model may intentionally hide ordinary Bluetooth discovery until its companion app starts association. Follow the model guide’s order.

What Android’s companion-device API means for users
Android Developers documents a companion-device pairing API for app developers. On Android 8.0 (API level 26) and later, an app can use the system’s initial Bluetooth or Wi-Fi scan and association flow without requesting ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION for that scan. The API is intended to help an app associate a nearby companion device.
That association is not the finished connection. Android’s documentation states: “Companion device pairing doesn’t create connections on its own nor enable continuous scanning.” After association, the app must establish communication with the appropriate connectivity APIs. In practical terms, a developer can build a cleaner setup experience, but the API does not give a wearer a universal button sequence, app name, device profile, or guarantee of compatibility. Treat it as implementation background, not as consumer setup instructions.
This also explains why a successful system prompt may not immediately produce working features. The maker’s app still has to open the appropriate Bluetooth or Wi-Fi channel, complete authentication, and configure the glasses. If an app reports association complete but audio or notifications do not work, use the maker’s feature-specific troubleshooting steps rather than repeating the initial scan indefinitely.
General checks when setup fails
The checks below are deliberately generic. They are not a substitute for the model’s troubleshooting guide and do not assert that every pair uses the same controls.
| Symptom | Checks that are safe to make | What requires the maker’s instructions |
|---|---|---|
| The phone cannot find the glasses | Confirm the glasses are charged, powered on, nearby, and not already connected to another phone. Verify that you are using the model’s documented association path. | The exact pairing-mode control, indicator meaning, and whether discovery happens in an app or Android settings. |
| The app says the phone is unsupported | Recheck the phone model, Android version, region, and app version against the maker’s compatibility statement. | Any workaround, beta enrollment, or firmware requirement. |
| Pairing starts but stops | Keep both devices close, maintain power, and repeat only the documented sequence. Check whether an account or network connection is required. | Unpair, reset, firmware recovery, and whether deleting a Bluetooth record is appropriate. |
| The glasses connect but a feature does not work | Confirm the feature is supported by that model and that the app has the permissions and account state the maker specifies. | Feature-specific permissions, subscription or cloud requirements, and offline behavior. |
| The glasses were paired to another phone | Use the maker’s documented transfer or re-pair procedure and sign out of the previous account if required. | Factory reset and ownership-transfer steps; do not guess these. |
If the maker’s manual is unavailable, the most reliable next step is to obtain the model number and contact the maker’s support channel. Avoid installing unofficial APKs, repeatedly clearing system services, or performing a factory reset without knowing what data or account binding it removes.

When escalating a problem, include the exact model and hardware revision, phone model, Android version, app version, country or region, whether the glasses were previously linked to another account, and the wording of any error. Do not send account passwords or recovery codes. A support agent can then distinguish an unsupported configuration from a power, firmware, or account problem.
Do Android XR glasses require an Android phone?
Google’s description identifies a smartphone as an example of the primary device for AI glasses, so a phone companion is part of the platform concept. It does not establish that every future glasses model requires an Android phone, that every Android phone is supported, or that an iPhone or another host is supported. Those answers belong to the individual maker’s compatibility documentation.

For a purchase or deployment decision, verify five items in the model’s official material: supported phone operating systems, minimum Android version, required app and account, region availability, and which features continue to work without the phone or an internet connection.
Also ask whether “works without a phone” means only that the glasses can remain powered on. Basic hardware functions and phone-dependent features are different questions. Directions, translations, message summaries, cloud assistants, notifications, and account-backed settings may have separate requirements. Only the model’s documentation can define which functions remain available when the phone is disconnected.

What is known about availability and future features
Google’s December 12, 2024 Android XR announcement described glasses prototypes and future assistance such as directions, translations, and message summaries. It was a platform-direction announcement and a report of real-world prototype testing, not evidence that a particular consumer glasses model is currently available or that its phone setup is documented.
Availability, feature names, and requirements can change as manufacturers release hardware. Use the maker’s dated support page for the model you actually own, and treat older demonstrations or announcement videos as background rather than setup authority.
Do not infer a launch date, retail price, supported carrier, or setup success rate from the announcement. None of those details supplies the missing model-specific pairing instructions. Recheck the support page when the glasses receive a firmware or app update, because a changed onboarding flow can alter permissions, account steps, or recovery options.
A practical verification checklist
- Write down the complete glasses model and hardware revision.
- Record the Android phone model, Android version, region, and current system updates.
- Locate the maker’s compatibility page and first-time setup guide for that exact model.
- Confirm the official app, account, permissions, network requirement, and firmware policy.
- Charge and power on the glasses exactly as documented.
- Follow the maker’s association sequence instead of copying headset or generic Bluetooth instructions.
- Test only the features listed as supported for your phone and region.
- Keep the official re-pair and reset instructions before removing the glasses from a phone or account.
Until those model-specific details are available, the accurate answer is limited: Android XR AI glasses are intended as phone-linked companions, but Google has not published a single consumer setup procedure that applies to all glasses.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pair Android XR glasses by opening my phone’s Bluetooth settings?
Not as a universal procedure. Some makers may use Android Bluetooth, while others start association in a companion app, with a QR code, or through another flow. Use the exact model’s instructions; do not assume that a visible Bluetooth entry means setup is complete.

Are the Android XR headset setup steps valid for glasses?
No. Google’s headset guide covers headset charging, on-device onboarding, Wi-Fi, Google Account sign-in, recommended apps, and screen lock. It does not explain how to pair companion glasses with an Android phone.
Do Android XR glasses need an Android phone?
Google describes a smartphone as an example of the primary device, but it has not established one requirement for every future model. Check the manufacturer’s supported operating systems, minimum Android version, app, account, region, and offline-feature documentation.
Why can’t Google provide one pairing recipe for all Android XR glasses?
The official material does not identify one consumer glasses model, companion app, phone compatibility list, permission set, or first-use sequence. Manufacturers can choose different association, firmware, account, and recovery procedures.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

On Android 8.0/API 26 and later, an app can use an initial Bluetooth or Wi-Fi scan and association flow without requesting ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION for that scan. The association does not itself create an ongoing connection or continuous scanning; the app must establish communication afterward.
What should I do if the glasses were connected to someone else’s phone?
Follow the maker’s documented transfer, sign-out, unpair, or factory-reset process. Do not delete random Bluetooth records or hold buttons until the glasses reset, because account binding and stored data may be affected.
What information should I give support when setup fails?
Provide the exact glasses model and revision, phone model, Android version, app version, region, previous-account status, and the precise step or error message. Do not share passwords or recovery codes.
The Bottom Line
Android XR AI glasses are described by Google as phone-linked companion devices, not as headsets with a universal onboarding flow. Identify the exact model, verify its phone and Android compatibility, and follow the maker’s documented app, association, permission, update, and recovery steps. Google’s headset and XR Bluetooth instructions are related context, not a substitute for that model-specific guide.
