The 8BitDo Xbox-branded keyboard is the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition. It is listed by 8BitDo for Windows and Android, while the manufacturer’s FAQ says it cannot be used with Xbox consoles. To connect it correctly, open the official product support page, download the linked owner’s manual, and follow its documented connection sequence rather than relying on an inferred button combination. The support page is the authoritative starting point because its web text does not reproduce every selector position or key press.

Identify the keyboard before you start
Several 8BitDo keyboards have similar names, so verify the label before applying any setup instructions. This guide covers the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition, not a different Retro model or a generic keyboard with an Xbox-style color scheme.
Recommended Free Tools
The “Xbox Edition” name describes the edition and licensing; it does not make the keyboard an Xbox-console peripheral. The official FAQ answers the question “Can I use it on the XBOX consoles?” with “No.” The supported host platforms listed by the manufacturer are Windows and Android.

If your intended host is a Windows PC or an Android device, continue with the setup below. If your intended host is an Xbox console, changing cables, pairing modes, or firmware will not turn this model into a console-compatible keyboard.
What you need before connecting
- The Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition.
- A Windows computer or Android device listed as the host.
- The keyboard’s owner’s manual, reached from the official support page.
- A way to install or open 8BitDo’s software if you need lighting configuration or firmware maintenance on Windows.
- Enough battery or wired power for the connection procedure, as applicable to the connection method described in your manual.
Keep the keyboard close to the host during wireless pairing and temporarily disconnect other devices that could make it difficult to identify the correct keyboard entry. Do not guess at a key combination from another 8BitDo model: the exact sequence is model-specific.
Use the owner’s manual for the actual connection sequence
The product support page links the owner’s manual, which contains the connection and setup instructions. The support page’s visible text does not publish the complete button presses, selector positions, or order of operations, so this guide does not invent them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open the official Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition support page.
- Open or download the owner’s manual linked on that page.
- Identify the section for your host and connection method.
- Set the keyboard’s physical controls exactly as shown in the manual.
- Perform the manual’s pairing or connection sequence without substituting a sequence from another 8BitDo keyboard.
- On the host, select the keyboard when it appears in the operating system’s device list.
- Type into a text field to confirm that the connection completed.
If the keyboard does not appear, start the manual’s sequence again from its first step. A partial attempt can leave the keyboard in a different mode, and repeating an unverified sequence can make diagnosis harder.
Windows setup
Connect the keyboard
On Windows, first complete the keyboard-side sequence in the owner’s manual. Then use Windows’ device settings to select the keyboard when it is shown as an available device. The exact Windows menu wording can vary by release, but the relevant area is the system’s Bluetooth or connected-device settings.

- Put the keyboard into the connection mode specified by the owner’s manual.
- Open Windows Settings and go to the area for Bluetooth and devices.
- Turn on Bluetooth if the manual’s selected connection method is Bluetooth.
- Choose the keyboard from the list of available devices.
- Wait for Windows to report that the device is connected.
- Open a text editor and test several letter, number, modifier, and navigation keys.
Do not interpret an Xbox-branded device name in Windows as evidence of Xbox-console support. The host is still a Windows computer, one of the platforms listed by 8BitDo.
Confirm the input before changing lighting
Test typing before opening configuration software. This separates a connection problem from a lighting-control problem. If text input works but the lighting does not respond as expected, use the Windows 11 remedy in the next section rather than repeatedly pairing the keyboard.
Android setup
Pair with an Android device
Android is one of the two host platforms identified by 8BitDo. Use the owner’s manual to place the keyboard in the correct mode, then complete pairing from Android’s connected-device settings.
- Follow the manual’s keyboard-side connection sequence.
- Open Android Settings and enter the connected devices or Bluetooth section.
- Enable Bluetooth if it is disabled.
- Tap the keyboard when it appears among available devices.
- Accept any pairing confirmation shown by Android.
- Open a text field and test the keyboard.
Android manufacturers place Bluetooth controls in slightly different locations, so the label may be “Connected devices,” “Bluetooth,” or a similar device-connection menu. The keyboard’s sequence remains the one printed in the model’s manual.
When Android does not show the keyboard
Move the keyboard and phone or tablet close together, turn Bluetooth off and on at the host, and repeat the manual’s pairing procedure. If the keyboard was previously paired with another device, remember that Bluetooth operation is limited to one connected device at a time; you must pair again when changing devices.

Bluetooth device switching
The FAQ states that Bluetooth can connect to one device at a time. This is a single-active-connection design, not a simultaneous multi-device arrangement.

- Stop typing on the currently connected host.
- Use the keyboard controls and sequence specified in the owner’s manual to place it into pairing or connection mode for the next host.
- On the new Windows or Android host, open Bluetooth settings.
- Select the keyboard and complete pairing.
- Test input on the new host.
Pairing is required again when connecting another device. Do not expect the keyboard to maintain active Bluetooth connections to both a computer and a phone, or to switch between them without repeating the documented pairing process.
Fix Windows 11 lighting conflicts
Windows 11 can compete with the keyboard’s lighting controls through Dynamic Lighting and compatible foreground applications. 8BitDo’s FAQ provides a specific remedy in Ultimate Software V2.
- Open Ultimate Software V2 on the Windows 11 computer.
- Find the keyboard’s lighting controls.
- Set the lighting control mode to 8BitDo RGB.
- Open Windows 11 Settings and go to the Dynamic Lighting controls.
- Turn off Windows Dynamic Lighting.
- Turn off the option that allows compatible apps in the foreground to control lighting.
- Return to Ultimate Software V2 and test the keyboard’s lighting.
This procedure addresses lighting control, not keyboard pairing. If the keyboard cannot type at all, resolve the host connection first. If typing works but lighting changes are ignored or immediately overridden, check both Windows Dynamic Lighting settings and the Ultimate Software V2 mode.
Understand the four top ports
The keyboard has four 3.5 mm ports along the top. According to the FAQ, these are connectors for 8BitDo keyboard extensions. They are not headphone jacks and they are not microphone inputs.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Use them only with compatible 8BitDo keyboard-extension accessories.
- Do not connect headphones or a microphone expecting audio input or output.
- A connected extension does not change the keyboard’s Windows or Android host compatibility.
Misidentifying these ports can lead to a false diagnosis when an audio accessory produces no sound. The absence of audio behavior is expected because the ports are for keyboard extensions.
Customize switches and keycaps within the stated limits
The FAQ says the keyboard supports third-party three-pin or five-pin switches and third-party OEM-profile keycaps. These categories describe the supported fit; they do not guarantee compatibility with every switch or every keycap sold under those labels.
Before replacing switches
- Confirm that the replacement switch is a third-party three-pin or five-pin type.
- Check the replacement part’s physical dimensions and electrical characteristics before installation.
- Work with the keyboard disconnected from its host.
- Keep the original switches so you can restore the keyboard if a replacement does not fit or behave correctly.
Before replacing keycaps
- Choose third-party OEM-profile keycaps, as identified by 8BitDo.
- Check stem and row compatibility with the specific key you are replacing.
- Do not assume that a non-OEM profile will provide the intended height, clearance, or feel.
8BitDo does not establish compatibility with every aftermarket switch or keycap in the FAQ. Treat the stated categories as boundaries, not as a blanket guarantee for all third-party parts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check firmware before troubleshooting deeply
The 8BitDo support index displayed firmware v1.07 for the Xbox keyboard, with notes about optimizing volume-knob performance and input accuracy. Firmware listings can change, so use the current entry on the official support index rather than treating v1.07 as a permanent latest version.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open the 8BitDo support index.
- Locate the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition listing.
- Compare the firmware version shown there with the version installed on your keyboard, using 8BitDo’s documented update process.
- Read the release notes before updating, particularly the notes concerning volume-knob performance and input accuracy.
- Follow the on-screen update instructions exactly and avoid disconnecting the keyboard during the update.
- After the update, reconnect or re-pair only if the instructions request it, then test typing and the volume knob.
Do not download firmware intended for a different 8BitDo keyboard. The model name must match before you begin.

Troubleshoot by symptom
The keyboard never appears on Windows or Android
- Confirm that the host is Windows or Android, the platforms listed by 8BitDo.
- Repeat the exact connection sequence in the owner’s manual from the beginning.
- Make sure the keyboard is not already connected to another device; Bluetooth supports one connected device at a time.
- Toggle Bluetooth on the host and search again.
- Keep the keyboard near the host while pairing.
The keyboard appears but will not complete pairing
- Remove an incomplete or stale keyboard entry from the host’s Bluetooth list.
- Restart the manual’s pairing sequence on the keyboard.
- Pair again from the host’s available-device list.
- Test in a plain text field after the host reports a successful connection.
Keys work, but lighting does not
On Windows 11, set the Ultimate Software V2 lighting control mode to 8BitDo RGB, then disable Windows Dynamic Lighting and the setting that lets compatible foreground apps control lighting. This is the manufacturer’s stated remedy for the Windows 11 lighting conflict.
The volume knob or input behaves unexpectedly
Check the current firmware listing on the 8BitDo support index. The displayed v1.07 notes mention volume-knob performance and input accuracy, but a newer listing may be available by the time you troubleshoot.
An audio accessory does nothing when plugged into a top port
The four top 3.5 mm ports are for 8BitDo keyboard extensions, not headphones or microphones. Remove the audio accessory and use the ports only with the intended keyboard-extension category.
A replacement switch or keycap does not fit
Verify that the switch is a third-party three-pin or five-pin type, or that the keycap is an OEM-profile design. The FAQ does not promise compatibility with every aftermarket part, so a part outside those categories may be unsuitable even if it is marketed as a mechanical-keyboard accessory.
