The Microsoft XBOX Nano Controller connects wirelessly to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles through XBOX Wireless. On a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, it pairs through Bluetooth. Its battery is built in and rechargeable, but Microsoft requires a USB-C charging cable that is sold separately.
First check the name on your controller or packaging. The Microsoft wireless XBOX Nano Controller is not the same product as the PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller for Xbox Series X|S. The PowerA model uses a detachable USB cable and must not be put through wireless-pairing steps.
Identify which Xbox Nano Controller you have
“Xbox Nano” can refer to two different controllers. Confirm the branding before connecting anything:

What you need before setup
- An Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One console, or a Windows 10/11 PC with Bluetooth enabled.
- The Microsoft XBOX Nano Controller with enough charge to complete pairing.
- A USB-C charging cable if the battery needs charging. Microsoft says this cable is sold separately, so do not assume one is included with the controller.
- For console setup, the Xbox must be powered on and you should be able to see its on-screen pairing prompts.
The controller is also specified for Android, iOS and compatible Smart TVs, but the detailed steps below cover the Xbox and Windows connections requested most often.
Connect the Microsoft XBOX Nano Controller to an Xbox console
Step 1: Turn on the Xbox
Start the Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One and wait until the console reaches its normal home screen. Pairing is easier when you can see the console’s current instructions and the controller’s connection status.
Step 2: Put the controller into Xbox Wireless mode
Use the controller’s Xbox and pair controls to place the XBOX Nano Controller in its Xbox Wireless pairing or connection mode. The Microsoft product specification confirms that this model connects to Xbox consoles with XBOX Wireless, but it does not publish a button-by-button timing sequence on the product page. Follow the pairing prompt shown by your console rather than relying on a sequence copied from a different controller.

Step 3: Complete the on-screen pairing prompts
When the Xbox displays the controller as an available device, select or confirm it as directed. Wait for the console to report that the controller is connected before opening a game.
Step 4: Test input at the dashboard
Move through the Xbox dashboard and open a controller-enabled game only after the connection is confirmed. Testing at the dashboard separates a pairing problem from a game-specific issue: if the dashboard does not respond, the wireless connection has not completed; if the dashboard works but one game does not, check that game’s controller settings.
Pair Xbox Nano with a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC
Step 1: Enable Bluetooth
- Open Settings.
- Choose Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on.
Windows menu wording can change with feature updates, so use the current Bluetooth settings page on your PC if the labels differ slightly.

Step 2: Start adding a device
- In Bluetooth & devices, select Add device.
- Choose Bluetooth when Windows asks which type of device to add.
Step 3: Put the controller in Bluetooth pairing mode
Use the XBOX Nano Controller’s Xbox and pair controls to make it discoverable. The wireless model uses Bluetooth for Windows 10/11 PCs; do not select a wired or Xbox Wireless-only option in Windows if the controller is not appearing.

Step 4: Select the controller in Windows
When the controller appears in the Bluetooth device list, select it and wait for Windows to show a connected status. If several nearby devices have similar names, compare the entry with the branding printed on your controller before confirming.
Step 5: Check the controls
Open a controller-enabled PC game and test movement, buttons and the Xbox control. You can also use Windows’ game-controller settings to check whether the operating system receives input. A successful Bluetooth pairing does not guarantee that every game is configured to accept a controller, so test in a title known to support gamepads.

Charge the XBOX Nano Controller
The Microsoft model has an internal rechargeable battery. Connect a USB-C cable to the controller and a suitable powered USB source when the battery needs charging. Microsoft specifies that the USB-C cable is required and sold separately; if your box does not contain one, obtain a compatible USB-C charging cable before attempting to charge the controller.
Charging and pairing are separate tasks. The cable supplies power, while an Xbox console uses XBOX Wireless and a Windows 10/11 PC uses Bluetooth for the wireless connection. A controller can therefore have a cable connected for charging without being configured as a wired Windows controller.
Confirm the connection and isolate failures
The console or PC never lists the controller
- Check the model name again. A PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller will not appear as a wireless Bluetooth device.
- Make sure the Microsoft controller is actually in pairing mode rather than merely powered on.
- On a PC, verify Bluetooth is enabled and that you selected Add device > Bluetooth, not a different device category.
- On an Xbox, keep the console on its home screen and follow the current pairing prompt instead of using an undocumented button-timing sequence.
The controller appears but will not finish pairing
- Move through the pairing process again from the beginning, placing the controller into pairing mode only when the console or Windows is searching.
- On Windows, remove an old or incomplete controller entry from Bluetooth & devices, then use Add device to start a new pairing.
- Temporarily turn off Bluetooth on other nearby devices that might be trying to claim the controller.
- Restart the Xbox or PC if the operating system continues to show a stale connection state.
It connects, but games do not respond
- Test the Xbox dashboard or Windows game-controller settings first. This confirms whether input reaches the platform.
- Close and reopen the game after pairing. Some games detect controllers only when they start.
- Check the game’s input settings and player assignment.
- If the controller works in system menus but not in one title, treat that as a game configuration or compatibility issue rather than immediately repeating the Bluetooth pairing process.
The connection drops during use
- Check the battery and connect the USB-C cable to recharge the internal battery.
- Keep the controller within a practical range of the console or PC and reduce nearby wireless obstructions where possible.
- On Windows, return to Bluetooth & devices and confirm that the controller is still listed as connected.
- If the problem persists, remove the pairing and set it up again using the Xbox or Windows procedure for your model.
Set up the PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller instead
Use this section only when the controller is branded PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller for Xbox Series X|S. It is a separate wired product with a detachable 10-foot USB cable, so there is no wireless Xbox or Bluetooth pairing step.

Connect the cable
- Turn on the Xbox Series X|S.
- Connect the detachable USB cable to an available USB port on the Xbox.
- Connect the other end to the controller.
- Look for the small white LED. PowerA’s manual says that the LED illuminates to indicate a successful connection.
If the wired controller does not work
- Confirm that the Xbox is powered on.
- Check that the cable is fully inserted at both the console and controller ends.
- If the controller is connected but has no function, verify that it is assigned as the Player 1 controller.
Program the Advanced Gaming Buttons
This PowerA model has two programmable Advanced Gaming Buttons, labeled AGR and AGL. To assign one:
- Hold the Program button for 2–3 seconds, until the LED flashes.
- Press the source button whose function you want to copy.
- Press AGR or AGL, the Advanced Gaming Button that should receive that function.
PowerA documents that these assignments remain in memory after the controller is disconnected. These programmable-button instructions do not apply to Microsoft’s wireless XBOX Nano Controller.
Common setup mistakes to avoid
- Using wired instructions on the Microsoft model: Microsoft’s controller uses XBOX Wireless on consoles and Bluetooth on Windows 10/11. Its USB-C connection is for charging.
- Using wireless instructions on the PowerA model: The PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller connects through its detachable USB cable.
- Assuming every Xbox Nano includes a charging cable: Microsoft states that the USB-C cable is sold separately.
- Assuming a Bluetooth connection proves game compatibility: Always test the controller in the specific game and check its input settings.
- Following an exact button sequence from another controller: Microsoft’s product page confirms the connection technologies but does not publish a precise button-by-button pairing sequence. Use the current on-screen Xbox instructions and the controller’s own Xbox/pair controls.
Which setup should you use?
| Your hardware | Correct connection | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft XBOX Nano Controller and Xbox Series X|S | XBOX Wireless | Turn on the console, enter pairing mode with the Xbox/pair controls, and follow the console prompts. |
| Microsoft XBOX Nano Controller and Xbox One | XBOX Wireless | Use the same console pairing approach and confirm the controller at the dashboard. |
| Microsoft XBOX Nano Controller and Windows 10/11 | Bluetooth | Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth, then select the controller in pairing mode. |
| PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller and Xbox Series X|S | USB cable | Attach the detachable cable, check for the white connection LED, and verify Player 1 assignment if inputs fail. |
Compatibility beyond Xbox and Windows
Microsoft lists the XBOX Nano Controller as compatible with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox on PC, Windows, Android, iOS and compatible Smart TVs. The connection method is not necessarily identical on every platform: the official specification explicitly identifies XBOX Wireless for Xbox consoles and Bluetooth for Windows 10/11 PCs. For Android, iOS or a Smart TV, use that platform’s Bluetooth-device menu and its current controller-support instructions rather than assuming the Xbox console procedure applies.

Quick Recap
Final pre-game checklist
- Verify that the controller is the Microsoft wireless model, not the PowerA wired model.
- Use XBOX Wireless for Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One.
- Use Bluetooth through Windows’ Bluetooth & devices settings on Windows 10/11.
- Have a USB-C cable available for charging the internal battery; Microsoft sells it separately from the controller.
- Confirm input at the Xbox dashboard or in Windows before launching a game.
- If the controller connects but a game does not respond, inspect that game’s controller and player-assignment settings.
