Connect the Xbox One’s HDMI OUT port to an HDMI input on the monitor, then select that input on the monitor. The console model determines which display features are available: Xbox One S and Xbox One X support 4K video and HDR, but only the One X supports 4K gaming. Your monitor’s specific HDMI input and its audio options matter too.
What you need to check before connecting
- Console port: Use the port labeled HDMI OUT. The HDMI IN port is not the display output.
- Monitor input: Confirm that the monitor has an HDMI input and check its manual for the resolution and refresh rates supported by that input. Some monitors offer different modes on different ports; Microsoft’s guidance on this general display issue is for Series X, so verify your Xbox One and monitor combination rather than assuming Series X capabilities apply. Microsoft display guidance.
- Audio: Check whether the monitor has built-in speakers or an audio output. HDMI connects the console to the display, but a monitor may not provide a way to hear sound. Confirm any headset or separate audio equipment against the manuals for the exact devices.
- Cable: Start with the supplied HDMI cable if it is available and working. Microsoft recommends a direct connection with the included cable for the One S 4K setup; replacing a cable is only necessary if yours is missing or faulty. Microsoft’s Xbox One S 4K guidance.
Connect the Xbox One to the monitor
- Turn off the Xbox and monitor.
- Connect the HDMI cable from the console’s HDMI OUT port to an HDMI input on the monitor.
- Turn on the monitor and select the HDMI input you used.
- Turn on the Xbox and check for a picture. If the display mode is wrong or no picture appears, use the troubleshooting steps below.
- In the Xbox display settings, choose a resolution supported by both the console and the monitor. For a 4K or HDR setup, check the monitor manual and use an input that supports the mode you want.
What resolution and HDR can each Xbox One model use?
The original Xbox One does not support 4K or HDR. Xbox One S and Xbox One X support 4K and HDR, but their 4K gaming capabilities differ. Microsoft’s Xbox Wire article distinguishes the models: the One S can stream video and play Blu-ray in 4K, but it does not render games in 4K; the One X supports 4K gaming. Microsoft’s Xbox One 4K and HDR explanation.
| Console | 4K video and Blu-ray | 4K gaming | HDR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Xbox One | Not supported | Not supported | Not supported |
| Xbox One S | Supported for compatible streaming video and Blu-ray | Not supported | Supported |
| Xbox One X | Supported | Supported | Supported |
These are console capabilities, not guarantees that every monitor setup will show 4K or HDR. The monitor, the HDMI input in use, the content, and the console’s display settings must also support the desired mode. Microsoft notes that HDR requires an HDR10-compatible display and HDR content. Fix a blank screen or an unexpected display mode
If there is no picture
- Check that the cable runs from the Xbox’s HDMI OUT port to the monitor’s HDMI input.
- Confirm that the monitor is set to the input where the cable is connected.
- Reseat both ends of the cable and test a direct console-to-monitor connection without an intermediate receiver or adapter.
If the picture appears at the wrong resolution or without HDR
- Check the monitor manual for the resolution, refresh rate, and HDR capabilities of the input you are using.
- Review the Xbox display settings and select a mode supported by both devices.
- For the documented One S 4K setup, Microsoft recommends a direct connection. If an intervening device is necessary, Microsoft says it needs suitable 4K UHD and HDCP 2.2 support. One S 4K connection guidance.
Plan for sound separately
Do not assume the monitor has speakers or an audio output just because it accepts the Xbox’s HDMI picture signal. Check the monitor manual for built-in speakers or an audio output, then consult the manuals for the Xbox model and any headset or external audio device you plan to use. The available Xbox One guidance does not establish one audio route that applies to every console, monitor, and accessory combination.

Why a VGA adapter is not a safe assumption
An Xbox 360 VGA manual does not establish that Xbox One supports VGA. For this setup, use the Xbox One’s HDMI output and a monitor with an HDMI input; do not rely on Xbox 360 documentation as proof that a VGA connection will work on Xbox One.
