Use the MCP server as a separately protected OAuth resource, give the client a token issued specifically for that resource, and make the server authorize every tool call before it reaches your IT platform. The safe pattern is: choose HTTP or local stdio deliberately, register the correct identity integration, discover authorization metadata, use authorization code plus PKCE for interactive users, validate issuer, tenant, signature, expiry, audience and scopes, exchange for a separate upstream-platform credential when needed, and prove that denied operations stay denied.
This design prevents an agent from using a token issued for one service against another service, limits each identity to the roles and tools it needs, and leaves an audit trail that distinguishes a human user’s delegated action from an autonomous service identity.
Understand the security boundary first
An MCP connection has three distinct roles. The MCP server is the protected resource that exposes tools. The MCP client is the OAuth client that obtains a token. A separate authorization server issues that token. The IT management platform is often an upstream API that the MCP server calls after it has authorized the tool request.
| Component | Security responsibility |
|---|---|
| MCP client | Starts discovery and authorization, validates the callback state, stores its token securely, and sends it only to the MCP server. |
| MCP server | Publishes protected-resource metadata, validates every bearer token, checks the requested tool and arguments, and enforces least privilege. |
| Authorization server | Authenticates the user or service identity, applies consent and policy, and issues an audience-bound access token. |
| IT management platform | Enforces its own scopes, roles, ACLs and record-level permissions on the server’s separate upstream credential. |
The MCP authorization specification requires the token to be issued for the canonical MCP server URI. A token intended for another API must not be accepted just because it is signed by the same identity provider. The specification states: “MCP servers MUST NOT accept or transit any other tokens.”

Choose the transport and identity model
HTTP transport
Use the MCP HTTP authorization flow when the client connects to a remotely reachable server. It supports metadata discovery, browser-based consent, bearer tokens, PKCE and centralized policy. Protect every endpoint with HTTPS; do not downgrade a production connection to plain HTTP.
Local stdio transport
The HTTP authorization specification does not apply to a local stdio implementation. A stdio server should receive credentials from its process environment or an approved local secret store. Do not copy the browser OAuth exchange into a shell script unless the client and server explicitly support that design. Protect the host, process environment, IPC channel and log files instead.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Delegated user identity
Use a delegated user flow when actions must be attributable to a person and the platform already models that person’s roles. User consent and platform ACLs determine what the call can do. Audit records should contain the user subject, the MCP client, the tool and the upstream operation.
Service or agent identity
Use a service identity for unattended automation only when the business process permits non-human execution. Give it a separate role set, short-lived credentials where possible, an owner, rotation schedule and explicit approval boundaries. A service identity should not inherit an administrator’s broad interactive privileges.
Follow the HTTP authorization flow
- Expose a canonical resource URI. Choose the stable HTTPS URI that represents the MCP server, including the path if that path identifies the resource. Use the same identifier consistently in metadata, authorization requests and token requests.
- Return protected-resource metadata. When a request lacks usable credentials, respond with HTTP 401 and a
WWW-Authenticateheader that points the client to the MCP server’s Protected Resource Metadata. The metadata identifies the authorization server that can issue a token for this resource. - Discover authorization-server metadata. The client reads the issuer’s endpoints and capabilities rather than guessing them. This lets an organization change its identity provider without hard-coding an endpoint into every client.
- Register the OAuth client. Register the exact redirect URI, permitted grant type and client authentication method required by your MCP client. Exact matching matters: differences in scheme, host, port, path or trailing slash should fail closed.
- Start authorization with a resource indicator. Send the
resourceparameter containing the canonical MCP server URI, along with the authorization-code request, state and PKCE challenge. The authorization server can then issue a token whose audience is this MCP resource. - Validate the callback. Require the returned
stateto match the value stored for the pending transaction, verify the PKCE code verifier, and reject an unexpected redirect or authorization response. - Exchange the code. Send the code, verifier and the same
resourcevalue to the token endpoint over HTTPS. Store the resulting access and refresh tokens in the client’s protected credential store. - Call the MCP server. Put the access token in an HTTP
Authorization: Bearer …header. Never place it in a query string, fragment, path, tool argument or log message.
PKCE protects public clients against authorization-code interception. HTTPS protects the code, verifier and token in transit. Neither replaces server-side authorization: a valid token can still lack permission for a particular tool.

Register and configure the MCP server
Publish metadata and a stable audience
Make the metadata endpoint reachable from the client and ensure that the authorization server listed there is the one your administrators approve. The resource identifier in the metadata and the identity-provider application registration must align. If the server is deployed behind a reverse proxy, decide whether the public URI or an internal URI is canonical and use one value consistently.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRegister exact client redirects
For a browser-based client, register only the callback URI that the client actually uses. Avoid wildcard redirects, dynamic subdomains and shared callbacks for unrelated applications. Separate development, staging and production registrations so a test redirect cannot receive a production token.
Limit scopes and roles at issuance
Define scopes that map to meaningful capabilities, such as read-only incident access or change-request creation. Avoid a single scope that silently grants every tool. The authorization server should also apply tenant, group, device and conditional-access policy before issuing the token.
Use a maintained validation library
Do not write cryptographic token validation from scratch. Microsoft’s guidance for securing an MCP server with Microsoft Entra ID recommends a tested library or middleware, an application registration for the server, protected-resource metadata and an aligned resource identifier. Follow the current Microsoft Entra MCP security guidance for the tenant and library version you deploy.
Configure the IT management platform from its own documentation
MCP is a protocol, not a universal platform connector. The platform’s release, cloud or on-premises edition, administrator policy and tool set determine the final steps.
ServiceNow inbound MCP OAuth
ServiceNow’s Australia release documentation describes an OAuth inbound integration for each MCP client. Its example uses the /sncapps/mcp-server resource path and the mcp_server scope, plus the platform’s OAuth configuration and required administrative roles. Those names are ServiceNow-specific; do not treat them as MCP defaults or copy them to another platform.

Jira Cloud integrations
For Jira Cloud integrations outside Atlassian Connect, Atlassian recommends OAuth 2.0 authorization-code grants for most cases. The flow obtains user consent and uses scopes to define the maximum actions. Atlassian generally advises avoiding basic authentication because it is less secure. Review the current Jira Cloud security guidance alongside your app’s scopes and data-access requirements.
Rovo MCP
Rovo MCP documents OAuth 2.1 for interactive, user-driven connections and API-token authentication for supported non-interactive cases when an administrator enables it. Authentication mode affects tool availability: the documentation notes that some Jira Service Management tools require API-token authentication while other tool sets are OAuth-only. Check the organization policy and the exact tool group before selecting a mode; do not assume that a successful connection exposes every tool. Use the Rovo MCP authentication and authorization guide.
Enterprise-managed authorization
The MCP project announced Enterprise-Managed Authorization as stable on June 18, 2026. It is intended to centralize authorization through an organization’s identity provider, but support still depends on the particular MCP client, server and IT platform. Treat it as a compatibility item to verify, not as a universal replacement for each product’s OAuth setup.
Validate identity and authorization before every tool execution
Validate the token itself
Reject a missing, malformed, expired, revoked or otherwise invalid token. Validate the signature against trusted keys, issuer, tenant identifier where applicable, audience, expiry and not-before time. Confirm that the token was issued for this MCP server, not merely by a familiar identity provider.
Authorize the requested tool
After authentication, map the token subject, client and claims to the requested tool and operation. A token that can read incidents must not automatically create, delete or approve changes. Check scope, role, tenant, record ownership and any platform-specific ACL before invoking an upstream API. Microsoft’s guidance explicitly separates token-claim validation from authorization of the subject and requested operation.

Constrain arguments and records
Validate tool arguments against an allow-list and the caller’s permitted data boundary. Prevent an agent from changing the target tenant, project, record owner or approval state through an untrusted argument. Apply server-side limits even if the client presents a friendly tool description.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Add human review for high-impact changes
For production changes, account disablement, bulk edits, deletion or privilege changes, require a review step defined by your risk policy. The reviewer should see the proposed operation, affected records, identity and reason before confirmation. Record both the proposal and the final decision.
Keep tokens and upstream credentials separate
The MCP access token is for the MCP server. If the server calls the IT platform, obtain a separate upstream credential through that platform’s supported OAuth, API-token or service-account arrangement. Never forward the client’s MCP token unchanged. Doing so creates an audience-confusion and confused-deputy risk.
- Store tokens in the organization’s approved secret manager or protected credential store.
- Encrypt tokens at rest and restrict access to the process that needs them.
- Keep access tokens, refresh tokens, client secrets and API tokens out of source code, tickets, prompt text, tool descriptions and telemetry.
- Redact authorization headers and token-like values before writing request or error logs.
- Rotate client secrets and upstream credentials, and define revocation procedures for a compromised identity.
- Use short lifetimes and refresh-token rotation where the identity provider supports them.
- Do not put tokens in URI query strings; URLs are routinely copied into browser history, proxies, analytics and logs.
Test the security boundary before production
Run these tests against a non-production tenant with synthetic records. Capture the HTTP status, response body, audit event and server log outcome for each case.
| Test | Expected result | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| No token | 401 with protected-resource discovery information | No tool runs and no sensitive data appears in the response. |
| Malformed or tampered token | 401 | Signature and parsing failures are rejected without a stack trace or token disclosure. |
| Expired or not-yet-valid token | 401 | Time claims are enforced with only the documented clock-skew allowance. |
| Valid token for another audience | 401 or equivalent authentication failure | The MCP server does not accept a token minted for the upstream IT platform or another API. |
| Valid identity with insufficient scope or role | 403 | The tool is not invoked and the response does not reveal records the caller cannot access. |
| Unauthorized record or tenant | 403 or a deliberately non-disclosing not-found response | Record-level and tenant boundaries hold even when an identifier is supplied directly. |
| High-impact operation | Review or approval required | No change is committed before the required human or policy gate. |
| Log and URL inspection | No credentials present | Proxy logs, application logs, traces, browser history and error reports contain no bearer or refresh token. |
Also test revocation: revoke the user session, service credential or consent grant, then confirm that a previously issued token is rejected according to the platform’s documented revocation and lifetime behavior. Test refresh-token rotation and concurrent refreshes so a race cannot overwrite the current credential with an older one.
Compare supported connection approaches
| Approach | Best fit | Advantages | Boundaries and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| HTTP with delegated OAuth | Interactive administrators and analysts | Clear user attribution, consent and platform ACL inheritance | Requires browser flow, PKCE, exact redirects, refresh handling and user availability. |
| HTTP with service identity | Scheduled or autonomous agents | Runs without a user session and can have a narrowly tailored role | Needs ownership, rotation, monitoring, revocation and explicit limits on high-impact actions. |
| Local stdio | Single-host tools under local process control | No remote OAuth endpoint; credentials can come from the host environment | Host compromise and environment leakage become the primary risks; HTTP metadata discovery does not apply. |
| Enterprise-managed authorization | Organizations centralizing MCP consent in an identity provider | Central policy, administration and potentially zero-touch onboarding | Client, server and platform must all support the extension; verify release and tool compatibility. |
Compare any two available modes on delegated versus service identity, browser interaction versus machine-to-machine operation, token audience, scopes and platform roles, storage and rotation effort, revocation and audit visibility, transport compatibility, tool-specific authentication and central governance.

Troubleshoot common failures
The client never discovers authorization metadata
Check that the unauthenticated response is actually HTTP 401, that WWW-Authenticate is preserved by the reverse proxy, and that the metadata URI is reachable from the client. Confirm that the metadata names the intended issuer and that the public resource URI matches the value used in registration.
The token is valid but the server returns 401
Decode the token only in a controlled diagnostic tool and compare issuer, tenant, audience, expiry and resource claims with the MCP server configuration. A token for the upstream platform, a different environment or a different path is not an MCP token. Check server clock synchronization and key-set refresh.
The server returns 403 for a tool
Authentication succeeded, so inspect the subject’s scopes, roles, tenant, platform ACL and tool allow-list. Confirm whether the platform requires a different authentication mode for that tool. For Rovo MCP, tool groups can differ between OAuth and API-token modes.

Inspect the separate upstream credential, not the MCP bearer token. Verify its platform scope, role, audience, tenant and expiration, and confirm that the server is not forwarding the client token. Check the platform’s own audit event for the denied operation.
A callback is rejected
Compare the registered and requested redirect URIs character for character, including scheme, port, path and trailing slash. Ensure the state value belongs to the same browser transaction and that the PKCE verifier matches the original challenge. Keep separate registrations for each environment.
Operational checklist
- Document the canonical MCP resource URI, issuer, client registration, redirect URI and supported transport.
- Record whether each connection is delegated, service-based or enterprise-managed, and identify its owner.
- Map every exposed tool to required scopes, platform roles, records and approval gates.
- Review metadata, identity-provider policies and platform release notes whenever the client, server or IT platform changes.
- Monitor authentication failures, audience mismatches, denied tools, unusual record volume and privilege changes.
- Review audit trails from both the MCP server and the IT platform; they should correlate identity, tool, arguments, upstream operation and outcome.
- Exercise token revocation, secret rotation, incident containment and rollback procedures at a scheduled interval.
- Re-run the negative test suite after changing scopes, middleware, reverse proxies, tool definitions or platform integrations.
Final decision
A secure MCP-to-IT-platform connection is a chain of narrow permissions, not a single login screen. Keep the MCP audience separate from the upstream platform audience, use standards-based discovery and PKCE for HTTP clients, validate identity and authorization at the tool boundary, and test rejected operations as rigorously as successful ones. Platform-specific documentation determines the final scopes, roles and authentication modes, so verify those details for the exact release before enabling production access.
