You do not need Wi‑Fi to display a MiSTer FPGA console on a television. For the documented MiSTer setup, connect the Terasic DE10‑Nano’s HDMI output directly to an HDMI input on the TV, select that input, and play. Wi‑Fi or another network connection may be useful for updates and file transfers, but it is not part of the wired video path.

“FPGA console” is a broad term, so the instructions below are specific to MiSTer unless another console’s manual confirms the same ports and signal behavior. CRT televisions and VGA displays require a different analog-output path, cable, and configuration.

What you need for a Wi‑Fi-free TV connection

For a modern television with an HDMI input, the basic setup is deliberately simple:

  • A MiSTer built around the Terasic DE10‑Nano
  • A full-size HDMI cable
  • An unused HDMI input on the TV
  • Power for the MiSTer and the television

The official MiSTer project overview describes the DE10‑Nano as connecting to a TV or monitor through HDMI video out. That cable carries the picture and sound; no wireless network, router, account, or internet service is required for the display connection.

Standard HDMI setup on a modern TV

Use this procedure when the television has a normal HDMI input and you want the ordinary digital output from MiSTer.

  1. Power down both devices. Turn off the TV and shut down the MiSTer before inserting or removing the video cable.
  2. Connect the cable. Plug one end of a full-size HDMI cable into the DE10‑Nano HDMI output and the other end into an available HDMI input on the TV.
  3. Turn on the TV. Use the television’s Input, Source, or HDMI button to select the exact port used, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
  4. Start MiSTer. Power the console and wait for its normal video output.
  5. Verify the picture and audio. If the TV displays the MiSTer menu or a loaded core, the physical connection is complete. Network access is not needed for this step.

A standard HDMI cable is normally the only connection-related purchase for an HDMI television. The project documentation does not specify a special Wi‑Fi accessory or networking device for video output.

What Wi‑Fi is—and is not—doing

Wi‑Fi can provide network access for tasks such as downloading updates, moving files, or accessing services configured on your system. Those are separate functions. The TV receives the MiSTer video signal over the HDMI cable, so losing Wi‑Fi does not by itself remove the picture from an already configured system.

Conversely, an offline setup may not be able to perform a network-dependent update or retrieve files until you provide another transfer method. The display connection and the maintenance connection should be treated as two independent systems.

Choosing the correct output for your TV

Start with the connector on the television, not with the adapter you happen to own. Analog displays may accept very different signals even when their sockets look similar.

TV or monitor input MiSTer connection path Important requirement
HDMI DE10‑Nano HDMI output to the TV’s HDMI input Use the normal HDMI configuration; Wi‑Fi is not involved.
RGB SCART CRT Analog I/O board VGA output, or Direct Video through a compatible HDMI-to-VGA DAC, then a correctly wired VGA-to-SCART cable Configure composite sync and confirm that sync voltage is safely attenuated.
Component (YPbPr) CRT Analog I/O board VGA output to a YPbPr cable, or a specially configured Direct Video route Use vga_mode=ypbpr; a Sync-on-Green switch may need changing on the Analog I/O board.
VGA monitor Analog output to the monitor’s VGA input Check the monitor’s accepted refresh rates; a 31 kHz display may need scandoubling.
S‑Video or composite CRT Appropriate MiSTer analog output with a compatible active adapter Adapter type and MiSTer.ini settings depend on the target format.

The Analog I/O and Digital I/O boards are add-ons in the MiSTer documentation. They are not prerequisites for the ordinary HDMI connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connecting to a CRT television

A CRT usually cannot accept the standard HDMI signal directly. You need either an Analog I/O board that produces the required analog output or a compatible Direct Video setup that converts the DE10‑Nano’s raw video to an analog connector.

RGB SCART

For the SCART path described in MiSTer’s CRT documentation, set composite_sync=1. The physical cable must route the correct RGB and sync signals to the SCART pins.

Sync safety is critical. The Direct Video guidance warns that the sync voltage can be too high for some equipment and recommends a 470‑ohm resistor inline on the relevant SCART sync pin unless compatibility is already known. Confirm that the cable or adapter includes the appropriate attenuation; do not assume every VGA-to-SCART lead is wired safely.

Component video (YPbPr)

With the Analog I/O board, the documented setting is vga_mode=ypbpr. The board’s Sync-on-Green switch may also need to be adjusted for the television and cable in use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Direct Video component output is less universally compatible. It requires additional signal configuration and, in some arrangements, circuit modification. Use the Analog I/O route when you need the documented, straightforward component path, and verify the exact requirements of any Direct Video design before connecting it.

VGA displays

A VGA cable is the direct route to a VGA monitor when the MiSTer hardware is producing an appropriate analog signal. Some 31 kHz monitors cannot lock onto the lower-frequency native timings used by certain cores. In that case, the CRT guide identifies forced_scandoubler=1 as a setting that may be needed.

A VGA computer monitor and a CRT television are not interchangeable merely because both use a 15-pin connector. The accepted horizontal frequency, sync polarity, and timing range must match the display.

S‑Video and composite

MiSTer’s CRT documentation describes adapter and INI requirements for S‑Video and composite output, including active Y/C adapters for native output in the configuration table. Check whether the television expects S‑Video, composite, or a particular regional variant before purchasing an adapter.

Some RGB-to-composite methods reduce image quality or do not generate a signal the TV can lock onto. Confirm the adapter’s signal direction and required settings rather than treating a passive plug converter as a universal solution.

Using Direct Video correctly

Direct Video is a low-latency output mode intended for compatible analog conversion. It is not ordinary HDMI, even though the signal begins at the DE10‑Nano’s HDMI connector.

Hardware required

You need a compatible HDMI-to-VGA DAC and the cable or breakout that matches the display. The official Direct Video documentation identifies AG6200- and AG6201-based DACs as proven to work and lists model-specific examples. Compatibility entries include products tested in 2021 and 2022, so check the current specifications of a prospective adapter rather than assuming any generic HDMI-to-VGA dongle is suitable.

Configuration and the HDMI warning

Enable Direct Video with direct_video=1 in MiSTer.ini when your hardware and display path require it. While this mode is enabled, MiSTer will not work with a normal HD TV or monitor: those screens require a standard HDMI signal, whereas Direct Video is a raw, zero-lag signal that is not standard HDMI.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That means a configuration intended for a CRT DAC can produce a blank screen on a modern HDMI television. If you need to return to the ordinary TV setup, disable Direct Video and restore the normal HDMI configuration, using another working display or an offline file-edit method if the current screen is unusable.

How to decide between Analog I/O and Direct Video

Situation Usually the simpler choice Why
Modern HDMI TV DE10‑Nano HDMI output No analog board, DAC, or special INI setting is needed for the display cable.
RGB SCART CRT Analog I/O board or a known-compatible Direct Video DAC Both can provide the required analog route, but sync wiring and attenuation must be correct.
Component CRT Analog I/O board The documented vga_mode=ypbpr path is more predictable than Direct Video component output.
31 kHz VGA monitor Analog output with scandoubling if required The monitor may not accept native lower-frequency timings.
S‑Video or composite CRT Compatible active adapter and the documented analog settings Signal format, adapter type, and configuration must agree.

The decision depends on the TV’s connector and signal support, whether an Analog I/O board is already installed, the compatibility of the DAC and cable, and how much configuration you are willing to perform. There is no single adapter that safely covers every analog television.

Offline preparation and configuration

You can prepare the physical connection without Wi‑Fi, but settings still have to match the output path.

  • For normal HDMI, leave MiSTer in its standard HDMI output mode.
  • For Direct Video, set direct_video=1 only when a compatible DAC and analog display are connected.
  • For RGB SCART, use composite_sync=1 and a cable with suitable sync attenuation.
  • For component through the Analog I/O board, use vga_mode=ypbpr and check the Sync-on-Green switch.
  • For a 31 kHz VGA monitor, consider forced_scandoubler=1 if the monitor cannot display native timings.

Signal modes are not interchangeable. Native, scan-doubled, and upscaled output can have different timing requirements, and a display that accepts one may reject another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting a blank or unstable picture

No picture on an HDMI TV

  1. Press the TV’s input button and select the physical HDMI port used, not a similarly named source.
  2. Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable with the devices powered down.
  3. Confirm that MiSTer is not still configured with direct_video=1. Direct Video disables the standard HDMI signal required by an HD TV.
  4. Try a known-good HDMI cable and another TV input if available.
  5. If the problem remains, identify the exact MiSTer hardware and any add-on board, because the basic procedure does not cover custom output modifications.

No picture through a Direct Video DAC

  • Verify that the DAC is a model known to be compatible with MiSTer Direct Video; a generic HDMI-to-VGA adapter is not guaranteed to work.
  • Check that direct_video=1 is enabled and that the analog display is connected to the DAC’s output.
  • Confirm that the display accepts the core’s timing and refresh rate.
  • Remember that the same setting prevents a normal HDMI television from displaying the signal.

SCART image, sync, or safety problems

  • Check composite_sync=1 for the described RGB SCART arrangement.
  • Confirm the cable’s pinout and the presence of appropriate sync attenuation, including the recommended 470‑ohm inline resistor where required.
  • Stop using the setup if the television shows unstable sync, excessive brightness, or other abnormal behavior until the wiring and voltage level are verified.

Component colors or sync are wrong

  • Use vga_mode=ypbpr for the Analog I/O component path.
  • Check the Analog I/O board’s Sync-on-Green switch.
  • If using Direct Video component output, recheck the additional signal configuration and hardware modification requirements; compatibility is more limited.

VGA monitor reports “out of range”

The monitor may not accept the current horizontal frequency or vertical refresh rate. A 31 kHz monitor may need forced_scandoubler=1, while a CRT television may require a different native timing altogether. Do not force a setting designed for one display type onto another without checking its specifications.

What to buy—and what not to assume

For an HDMI television

Buy or reuse a standard full-size HDMI cable. No Wi‑Fi adapter is required for video, and the official setup does not call for a special HDMI accessory.

For a CRT

Budget for the output hardware that matches the TV: an Analog I/O board or a compatible Direct Video HDMI-to-VGA DAC, plus a correctly wired SCART, component, VGA, S‑Video, or composite cable. The DAC’s chipset and compatibility matter more than the fact that its plug is labeled HDMI-to-VGA.

Product availability changes, and the documented compatibility examples include tests from 2021 and 2022. Check current technical specifications before ordering. A cable category alone does not establish safe sync levels, correct pinout, or support for every MiSTer core.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safety and compatibility checklist

  • Identify the console model; these instructions are for MiSTer’s DE10‑Nano-based setup.
  • Identify the TV input standard: HDMI, RGB SCART, YPbPr component, VGA, S‑Video, or composite.
  • Power down before connecting or changing video hardware.
  • Use standard HDMI mode for an HDMI TV.
  • Use Direct Video only with a compatible DAC and analog display.
  • Verify SCART sync attenuation and the cable pinout.
  • Set the appropriate INI options for composite sync, YPbPr, Direct Video, or scandoubling.
  • Match the signal frequency and timing to the display.
  • Keep in mind that network-dependent maintenance may still require Wi‑Fi or another file-transfer method, even though the TV connection does not.

Bottom line for a Wi‑Fi-free setup

For a MiSTer and an HDMI-equipped TV, run one HDMI cable from the DE10‑Nano to the television and select that input. Wi‑Fi is not part of the picture path. A CRT requires a deliberately chosen analog route, matching cable, and settings such as composite_sync=1, vga_mode=ypbpr, or direct_video=1 as appropriate. Direct Video needs a compatible DAC and makes the normal HDMI output unavailable while active. If the console is not MiSTer, use its own manual before applying any of these assumptions.
