For a stock Atari 800XL, the simplest connection is a compatible 5-pin DIN-to-RCA monitor cable: connect its composite-video plug to a TV or monitor’s composite input, then route the mono audio plug to an audio input or powered speakers. If the display has HDMI but no composite input, add a composite-to-HDMI converter. First check the computer’s regional video standard and connector, because NTSC, PAL and SECAM versions may not work with every display or adapter.
Choose the connection that matches your display
| Display input | What to use | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Composite video | Atari-compatible 5-pin DIN-to-RCA monitor cable | Confirm the display supports the 800XL’s NTSC, PAL or SECAM standard. |
| HDMI only | Composite-to-HDMI converter or upscaler, plus the Atari monitor cable | Compatibility and picture quality vary; no specific converter model is established here. |
| RF tuner | The appropriate RF connection for the computer’s version and setup | Usable only if the TV has a compatible analog tuner and supports the broadcast standard. |
| S-Video | Requires an appropriate hardware modification or video upgrade | The stock 800XL generally does not route chroma to its monitor jack, so a cable alone will not provide color S-Video. |
Connect to composite video
The Atari 800XL service manual describes composite video and mono audio at the computer’s monitor jack. A typical color monitor cable has a 5-pin DIN plug at the Atari end and two RCA (phono) plugs at the display end: one for composite video and one for sound. Atari 800XL service information and Atarimania’s Atari 8-bit FAQ describe the monitor connection and cable type.
- Check that your computer has the expected monitor connector and identify its regional video version.
- Plug the cable’s 5-pin DIN end into the Atari 800XL monitor jack. DIN shape alone does not guarantee correct wiring, so use a cable specified for Atari monitor output.
- Connect the composite-video RCA plug—usually yellow—to the TV or monitor’s composite-video input.
- Connect the audio RCA plug to the display’s audio input. If the display has no suitable audio input, connect it to powered speakers or another compatible audio input.
- Select the corresponding AV input on the display.
The service manual’s electrical specifications list composite video at 750 mV–1 V peak-to-peak, luminance at 1.2–1.5 V peak-to-peak, and audio at 600–750 mV peak-to-peak. These are output specifications, not a promise of compatibility with every modern screen.

The 800XL provides analog video, so an HDMI-only display needs a composite-to-HDMI converter or upscaler. The signal path is Atari monitor jack → Atari-compatible DIN-to-RCA cable → converter → HDMI cable → display. Connect the Atari cable’s composite and audio plugs to the converter’s matching inputs, connect the converter’s HDMI output to the screen, and select that HDMI input.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Converters differ in how they handle analog standards and video signals. The available documentation does not establish a best model or guarantee that a particular low-cost adapter will accept every NTSC, PAL or SECAM Atari signal. Check the converter’s supported input standards and the display’s supported HDMI modes before buying; no specific adapter has been tested here.
Check the regional version and connector
Atari 800XL computers were made in NTSC, PAL and SECAM versions. The computer’s video standard must be supported by the display when connecting directly, or by the converter when converting to HDMI. Connector details also vary: a technical reference identifies common 5-pin DIN PAL and 6-pin DIN SECAM monitor connectors, while the service manual describes a 5-pin DIN jack for the model documented there. If your machine has an unusual connector or is a French-market unit, identify the exact variant before ordering a cable. See the Atarimania FAQ and Atari 800XL service information.

The stock 800XL is not an RGB computer by default. Do not assume that a generic SCART/RGB lead is compatible unless the particular machine and adapter are documented to support it.

What RF and luminance connections can—and cannot—do
RF connection
An RF route may be available depending on the 800XL version and setup, but it depends on a TV with a compatible analog tuner and support for the computer’s broadcast standard. Many current displays lack the necessary tuner compatibility. When the TV has composite input, a monitor cable is the more straightforward option.

Monochrome luminance output
The monitor jack includes luminance (Y), which can feed a compatible monochrome composite input for a black-and-white picture. Luminance alone is not color composite video and is not equivalent to color S-Video.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a standard S-Video cable is not enough
Color S-Video carries separate luminance (Y) and chrominance (C) signals. On a stock 800XL, chroma generally is not routed to the monitor jack, so buying an S-Video cable by itself will not produce color S-Video. Atari Projects describes a hardware modification that connects chroma circuitry to the jack to enable S-Video: Atari 800XL S-Video modification guide.

This involves internal hardware work, not just changing cables. The guide also notes that an optional component change can remove composite video. Because board revisions and modifications matter, use a guide for the exact board or consult a qualified repairer before making changes.

If there is no picture or sound
- No picture over composite: Confirm the display is on the correct AV input, the video plug is connected to composite video rather than an audio jack, and the TV supports the Atari’s regional standard.
- No picture through HDMI: Check that the converter is powered as required, its input is composite, and the display is set to the HDMI port receiving its output. Verify the converter accepts the computer’s video standard.
- Picture but no sound: The Atari’s monitor port supplies mono audio separately. Check that the audio plug goes to an audio input associated with the selected input, or route it to powered speakers.
- Black-and-white picture: Check whether the connection is carrying luminance only; Y output does not supply the chroma needed for color.
- Cable does not fit: Do not force it. Recheck the computer’s exact connector and regional variant, especially on a SECAM or French-market machine.
