For the Astro A40 TR with MixAmp Pro TR Gen 4, the manufacturer’s documented PC connection is USB, not PC optical. Plug the MixAmp into the computer with Micro USB, connect the A40 headset to the MixAmp’s front headset port, switch the MixAmp to PC mode, and select its Game and Voice devices in your sound settings. The MixAmp does have an optical input, but the official wiring illustration uses that input for a PS4’s optical output. It does not show a PC optical-output connection.

What “connecting the A40 to PC with optical” really means

The optical connector belongs to the MixAmp, not to the A40 headset. The headset connects to the MixAmp through the supplied inline-mute headset cable and the MixAmp’s front 3.5 mm headset port. The MixAmp then receives audio from a source device and sends sound to the headset.

In the official quick-start procedure for the A40 TR and MixAmp Pro TR Gen 4 bundle, a PC or Mac connects to the MixAmp through Micro USB. The guide’s optical diagram shows a different arrangement: a PS4 optical output runs to the MixAmp’s optical input, while USB is also connected. That distinction is the reason a TOSLINK cable is not part of the documented PC setup.

If your computer has no optical output, a TOSLINK cable cannot create one. You would need an optical output on the computer or a separate adapter, and the cited guide does not verify any particular adapter or its compatibility with the MixAmp. For the supported, documented PC arrangement, use USB.

Identify the connections before plugging anything in

Use this signal map to avoid putting a cable in the wrong port:

Part Connection Purpose
A40 headset 3.5 mm headset connection through the inline-mute cable Carries headphone audio and microphone signals between the headset and MixAmp
MixAmp front headset port Headset cable from the A40 Headset input/output connection
MixAmp Micro USB port USB cable to the computer Documented PC/Mac connection and MixAmp USB audio devices
MixAmp optical input TOSLINK optical cable from a compatible optical source Digital audio input; the illustrated example is a PS4
MixAmp PC/PS4 switch Physical mode switch Sets the MixAmp for the selected source arrangement

The quick-start guide lists a 3 m TOSLINK optical cable, but listing the cable does not mean the guide uses it between a PC and the MixAmp. In the guide, that cable is used for the console optical path.

What you need for the documented PC setup

  • Astro A40 TR headset with its inline-mute cable.
  • MixAmp Pro TR Gen 4 with a working Micro USB cable.
  • A PC with an available USB port.
  • Windows sound settings, or the Mac Sound settings described in the guide.
  • The MixAmp’s PC/PS4 switch set to PC.

You do not need a TOSLINK cable for the guide’s USB-only PC procedure. You need one only when you are using an optical source, such as the PS4 arrangement shown in the guide.

Windows: connect the A40 and MixAmp over USB

Complete the physical wiring first, then assign the separate Game, Voice, and recording devices. The labels below are the names specified in the guide; a different MixAmp revision may expose different labels, so confirm that your hardware is the A40 TR/MixAmp Pro TR Gen 4 bundle.

  1. Connect the MixAmp to the computer. Insert the Micro USB end into the MixAmp Pro TR and the USB end into the PC.
  2. Connect the headset. Plug the A40’s inline-mute cable into the headset’s 3.5 mm port, then connect the other end to the MixAmp’s front headset port.
  3. Select PC mode. Move the MixAmp’s PC/PS4 switch to PC.
  4. Choose game playback. Open Windows sound settings and select ASTRO MixAmp Pro TR Game as the default playback device. This is the output intended for ordinary game and application audio.
  5. Choose communications playback. Set ASTRO MixAmp Pro TR Voice as the default communications device.
  6. Set the microphone device. In recording settings, select ASTRO MixAmp Pro Voice as both the default device and the default communications device.

After these assignments, applications using the normal playback path should appear through the Game device, communication audio should use the Voice device, and the microphone should be captured through the MixAmp Pro Voice recording device. If an application has its own audio-device menu, check that it has not overridden the Windows defaults.

Why Windows shows separate Game and Voice devices

The MixAmp exposes separate playback endpoints so game audio and communications audio can be routed independently. The important part is not merely seeing the names; each endpoint must be assigned to the role it is meant to perform. Setting the Game endpoint as the default playback device while assigning the Voice endpoint as the default communications device lets Windows distinguish ordinary audio from chat audio.

The recording assignment is separate from playback. Selecting a Voice recording device is necessary for the headset microphone to be the Windows input. A correct playback selection alone does not configure the microphone.

Mac: follow the guide’s output path, with version caution

The guide directs Mac users to the computer’s Sound settings, then Output, and then Digital Output. It does not provide current-version macOS menu names beyond that path. Apple can change the wording and layout between macOS releases, so look for the MixAmp-related output listed in the Mac sound panel and use the guide’s Digital Output choice where it is present.

  • Extended wireless range up to 15m (50ft) through the 2.4 GHz wireless signal.
  • On-device audio balancing between voice chat and game audio on Xbox or PC
  • Console specific USB transmitter for easy cross-platform compatibility.
  • Built-in battery provides more than 15 hours of battery life and can be recharged through the USB-C port.
  • Quick and easy mute functionality with the flip-to-mute microphone.
  1. Connect the MixAmp to the Mac with Micro USB.
  2. Connect the A40 to the MixAmp’s front headset port with the inline-mute cable.
  3. Set the MixAmp switch to PC.
  4. Open Mac Sound settings and the Output section.
  5. Select the MixAmp output identified by the guide as Digital Output, if that label appears.

The supplied evidence does not establish a current macOS version, a current exact menu path, or a separate Mac microphone path. If your Mac uses different labels, choose the MixAmp device that appears after the USB connection and verify input separately in the Sound settings.

When optical audio is the right connection

Optical is appropriate when the source device has an optical output and you want to feed that signal into the MixAmp’s optical input. The guide’s illustrated example is:

  1. Connect one end of the TOSLINK cable to the PS4’s optical port.
  2. Connect the other end to the MixAmp’s optical input.
  3. Keep the MixAmp connected by USB as shown in the console setup.
  4. Use the appropriate source mode and the A40 headset connection at the MixAmp front port.

This is a console-to-MixAmp optical path, not a PC-to-MixAmp optical instruction. The optical input is on the MixAmp, so plugging a TOSLINK cable into the headset, the computer’s USB port, or an unrelated 3.5 mm jack cannot produce optical audio.

If you specifically want optical from a PC

First determine whether the PC itself has an optical output. Some computers expose one on a motherboard or sound device; many do not. A USB port is not an optical output, and a standard 3.5 mm analog output is not TOSLINK unless the hardware explicitly identifies it as an optical mini-jack.

  • PC has a documented optical output: the physical arrangement may be possible in principle: PC optical output to MixAmp optical input, with the A40 still connected to the MixAmp. However, the cited guide does not document this PC optical configuration, its Windows device behavior, or a particular PC setting.
  • PC has no optical output: the supplied guide does not recommend or verify an adapter. Do not assume that any USB-to-optical product will provide the MixAmp’s expected signal or preserve its Game/Voice device separation.
  • You only need PC game and chat audio: use the documented Micro USB connection and the Windows Game, Voice, and Voice recording assignments.

Because no specific adapter model or compatibility matrix is established, an adapter should be treated as an unverified third-party path rather than a guaranteed fix. The manufacturer’s documented PC method remains USB.

Check the setup in the order signals travel

When audio or chat fails, checking components in signal order is faster than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.

1. Confirm the headset connection

  • Verify that the inline-mute cable is inserted into the A40’s 3.5 mm port.
  • Verify that the other end is in the MixAmp’s front headset port, not an optical or USB port.
  • Check the inline mute control; a muted microphone can look like a Windows input failure.

2. Confirm the MixAmp-to-PC link

  • Reseat the Micro USB connector at the MixAmp and the USB connector at the PC.
  • Use the same physical arrangement as the guide: Micro USB for the PC path.
  • Make sure the MixAmp is switched to PC.

3. Confirm Windows output roles

  • Set ASTRO MixAmp Pro TR Game as default playback.
  • Set ASTRO MixAmp Pro TR Voice as default communications.
  • Check that the application playing sound has not selected a different output internally.

4. Confirm microphone input

  • In recording settings, choose ASTRO MixAmp Pro Voice as the default device.
  • Choose the same device as the default communications device.
  • Speak while watching the operating system’s input indicator. If it does not react, recheck the headset cable and inline-mute control before changing playback devices.

5. Check the optical path only if you are using one

  • Confirm that the source actually has an optical output.
  • Confirm that the TOSLINK cable runs from the source output to the MixAmp optical input.
  • Do not troubleshoot a PC optical signal by changing Windows USB assignments; those are different source arrangements.

Common mistakes and the precise correction

Symptom or assumption Likely configuration error Correction
“The A40 has no optical port.” The optical port is being sought on the headset. Connect the headset with its inline-mute cable; optical, when used, connects to the MixAmp.
No sound after connecting a TOSLINK cable to the PC setup The guide’s PC path was replaced with an undocumented optical arrangement. Return to Micro USB from the PC to the MixAmp and set the switch to PC.
Game sound works, but chat does not Only the Game playback device was assigned. Set ASTRO MixAmp Pro TR Voice as the default communications device and check the application’s chat output.
Chat hears no microphone The recording device was not assigned, or the inline mute is active. Select ASTRO MixAmp Pro Voice for default recording and communications, then check the inline-mute control.
The computer has only USB and analog audio ports There is no native optical output. Use the documented USB connection; the guide does not verify a specific optical adapter.
The MixAmp is connected but behaves like a console setup The PC/PS4 switch is in the wrong position. Move the switch to PC for the computer procedure.

How to decide between USB and optical

Use this short decision process:

  1. Is the source a PC or Mac? Start with Micro USB, because that is the documented computer connection.
  2. Is the source a PS4 with an optical output? The guide’s illustrated arrangement uses TOSLINK from the console to the MixAmp’s optical input and also uses USB.
  3. Does the PC have a genuine optical output? If not, a TOSLINK cable alone cannot solve the problem.
  4. Do you need the Windows Game/Voice split? Use the USB device assignments specified for Windows.
  5. Are you considering an adapter? Treat compatibility as unverified unless the adapter and MixAmp combination has been confirmed separately; the cited guide provides no model-specific recommendation.

What the official guide does—and does not—establish

The guide establishes the physical role of each major connection for the A40 TR and MixAmp Pro TR Gen 4 bundle: headset cable to the front port, Micro USB for PC/Mac, and optical input on the MixAmp for the illustrated PS4 arrangement. It also specifies the Windows playback and recording device names used in the PC procedure.

It does not establish current product availability, current Windows or macOS menu wording, firmware requirements, or compatibility for third-party PC optical-output adapters. Those details can vary by hardware revision and operating-system release, so do not treat an unverified adapter or a remembered menu label as part of the official setup.
