The quickest way to watch a supported streaming service is to cast from its Android app: connect the tablet and a Google Cast TV or streaming device to the same Wi‑Fi network, tap the app’s Cast button, and select the television. To show the tablet’s entire display, use Android screen casting instead. A USB‑C-to‑HDMI cable can provide a wired connection, but only tablets whose exact model supports video output will work.
Use the method that matches your goal and hardware. App casting is usually best for movies and shows, screen casting is for the broader tablet screen, and HDMI is useful when Wi‑Fi discovery is unavailable or when the tablet supports a direct video signal.
Choose the right connection method
There is no universal “Android tablet to TV” connection. The correct procedure depends on whether you want to send one supported video stream, mirror the whole screen, or use a cable.
| Method | Best for | What you need | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cast from an app | Streaming a supported movie, show, music service, or other app content | A Cast-enabled app, a Google Cast TV or streaming device, and the same Wi‑Fi network | The app and particular content must permit casting; a subscription may be required |
| Android screen casting | Showing the tablet’s wider screen, such as photos, presentations, or an app without its own Cast button | A compatible Google Cast destination and a Wi‑Fi network that allows local devices to communicate | Some apps or content restrict external playback, and network conditions affect responsiveness |
| TV with built-in Google Cast | Either app casting or screen casting without an extra box | A compatible TV configured for Google Cast | Cast support and settings vary by television model and software |
| HDMI streaming device | Adding a Cast destination to a TV that has HDMI but no built-in Cast | A compatible device such as Google TV Streamer, a free HDMI input, power, and Wi‑Fi | Requires setup and an available HDMI port |
| USB‑C to HDMI | A direct, low-dependency wired connection from a tablet that supports video output | A compatible tablet, adapter or cable, HDMI cable, and a TV HDMI input | USB‑C alone does not guarantee video output; support is model-specific |
Before you start
- Identify the exact tablet model and Android version. Model names that look similar can have different USB‑C video capabilities.
- Check whether the TV includes Google Cast. Android TV and Google TV enable Google Cast during setup; other compatible televisions may expose the option during initial setup, in TV settings, or when a Cast session begins.
- For wireless methods, connect the tablet and TV or streaming device to the same Wi‑Fi network. Make sure the tablet has not silently joined a different saved network.
- If you use a streaming device, verify that the television has a free HDMI input and that the device can join a secure Wi‑Fi network.
- For a wired method, confirm video-output support for the precise tablet model before buying an adapter. A charging-capable USB‑C port is not automatically a display-output port.
Cast a video from an Android app
App casting sends playback to the television while the tablet acts as a remote control. The TV does not need to mirror every tap or notification from the tablet, so this is normally the cleanest choice for a supported streaming service.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
Step-by-step
- Turn on the TV and select the input used by its built-in Cast system or connected streaming device.
- Connect the tablet and the TV or streaming device to the same Wi‑Fi network. Google’s casting guidance requires the mobile device or tablet and the Cast destination to share that network.
- Open the streaming app on the tablet and start, or prepare to start, the video.
- Find the app’s Cast button. It commonly resembles a rectangle with Wi‑Fi waves, but its position differs between apps and versions.
- Tap the Cast button and select the TV, Chromecast, Google TV Streamer, or other Google Cast destination from the device list.
- Wait for the Cast icon to show a connected state, then use the app to play, pause, seek, or change volume. You can normally lock the tablet or use it for other control tasks without ending playback.
- To end the session, tap the Cast button again and choose Disconnect or the equivalent stop command.
If the app does not show a Cast button
The app may not support Google Cast, the tablet and TV may be on different networks, or the app may need an update. Some services support casting only for certain programs, accounts, or regions. A subscription requirement for the service still applies when playback is sent to a TV. Do not assume that content which plays on the tablet can always be sent to an external display.
Mirror the entire tablet screen
Screen casting is different from app casting. It attempts to display the tablet’s broader interface—including home screens, photos, browser pages, and compatible apps—on a Google Cast TV or streaming device. It is the appropriate choice when you need to demonstrate the tablet or show content that has no Cast control.

Step-by-step
- Place the tablet and Google Cast destination on the same Wi‑Fi network.
- On the tablet, open Quick Settings by swiping down from the top of the screen. Look for a control labelled Cast, Screen Cast, Screen share, or a similar manufacturer term. The exact label and location depend on the Android interface.
- Tap the screen-casting control and select the TV or streaming device. If Android asks for confirmation, approve the connection.
- Use the tablet normally. Rotate it if you want the TV image to switch orientation, provided the app and display support that behavior.
- Open Quick Settings again and tap the active casting control to disconnect when finished.
Screen mirroring is subject to app and content restrictions. A service may show a blank image, stop playback, or require its own Cast function instead. For a supported film or show, app casting is generally more reliable than mirroring the entire interface.

Mirroring has to capture and transmit the tablet display continuously, so it is more sensitive to distance, interference, and Wi‑Fi congestion than sending a stream through an app. Move the tablet and TV or streamer closer to the wireless access point, and check whether both are using the same Wi‑Fi band when the router offers separate bands. A poor connection can make touch actions appear late even when the video eventually displays.

Use a TV with built-in Google Cast
Many Android TV and Google TV products include Google Cast. Google enables Cast as part of setting up those platforms. On another compatible television, Cast may be offered during the first-run wizard, in the TV’s network or app settings, or when a device tries to cast.
Confirm Cast is available
- Complete the TV’s network and account setup, connecting it to the same local network as the tablet.
- Open the TV’s settings and look for Google Cast, Chromecast built-in, or a related system-app entry. Menu names differ by manufacturer.
- If the television uses Google TV and casting is not discovered, inspect the system-app list. Google’s troubleshooting steps allow Google Cast to be enabled there if it has been disabled.
- Return to the tablet’s app or Quick Settings and test the Cast destination.
A television can have Android software without exposing identical Cast features in every region or firmware version. If the TV does not appear as a destination after setup and network checks, treat it as a TV without a usable Cast endpoint and consider an HDMI streaming device or a wired connection.

Add Google Cast with an HDMI streaming device
An HDMI streaming device can supply a Cast destination to a television that has HDMI but lacks built-in Google Cast. Google TV Streamer is one example of this type of device. It must be powered, connected to an HDMI input, configured on the network, and left on the correct TV input when you want to cast.

- The TV needs a free HDMI input and must support the device’s display requirements.
- Google states that its streaming devices require an HDMI display with HDCP 1.3 or higher; HDCP 2.2 is required for 4K output.
- The tablet and streamer need a secure Wi‑Fi network on which they can communicate.
- Google Home setup for Google streaming devices requires Android 9.0 or later on the setup phone or tablet. This requirement applies to setting up the streaming device; it does not mean every tablet must run Android 9 to cast from an app.
Basic setup sequence
- Connect the streamer to an open HDMI port on the TV and provide its required power.
- Switch the TV to that HDMI input and follow the on-screen setup instructions.
- Use the Google Home setup flow on a compatible Android or iOS phone or tablet. Join the streamer to the secure Wi‑Fi network you want the tablet to use.
- Finish any firmware updates and name the device so it is easy to identify in the Cast list.
- When setup is complete, use the app-casting or screen-casting steps above.
If the television shows “no signal,” first verify the selected HDMI input and power connection. If the streamer works on-screen but never appears on the tablet, the problem is more likely network separation or a disabled Cast service than the HDMI cable.

Connect a compatible tablet with USB‑C to HDMI
A wired connection avoids wireless discovery and can be useful for presentations or locations where local Wi‑Fi blocks device-to-device traffic. It works only when the tablet can output video through its USB‑C port and the adapter or cable supports the tablet’s signal.
Samsung Galaxy Tab example
Samsung lists Galaxy Tab S8, S7, S6, S5e, and S4 among tablets supported for its USB‑C-to-HDMI method. This is a model-specific example, not a rule for all Android tablets. Confirm the exact model number and regional specifications in the manufacturer’s documentation before purchasing.
Step-by-step wired connection
- Plug the USB‑C end of a compatible USB‑C-to-HDMI adapter into the tablet.
- Connect an HDMI cable between the adapter and an open HDMI input on the television.
- Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input used by the cable.
- Accept any prompt on the tablet and choose the available display mode if one is offered.
- Start the video or presentation. Disconnect by switching the TV input first, then removing the adapter if you no longer need the external display.
Samsung DeX on an external display
Supported Galaxy tablets can use Samsung DeX to present a desktop-style interface on an HDMI display instead of a phone-like mirrored layout. The available modes and behavior depend on the Galaxy model and installed software. DeX support should therefore be checked alongside USB‑C video-output support, not assumed from the presence of a USB‑C connector.

- Buying an adapter based only on the USB‑C shape. The port may handle charging and data but not DisplayPort video output.
- Using a cable or adapter that does not support the tablet’s output mode or the TV’s resolution.
- Leaving the TV on the wrong HDMI input.
- Assuming that a USB‑C hub designed for a laptop has been tested with the particular tablet.
Compare the options for your situation
| Your situation | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want to watch a supported streaming service | Cast from the app | Playback is controlled from the tablet without mirroring the entire interface. |
| You need to show photos, a browser, or a presentation | Screen casting | It displays the wider tablet screen on a compatible Cast destination. |
| The TV has Google Cast built in | App casting or screen casting | No additional hardware is needed once TV and tablet share Wi‑Fi. |
| The TV has HDMI but no Cast | Add an HDMI streaming device | The device creates a Cast destination while using an existing HDMI input. |
| Wi‑Fi discovery is blocked or unreliable | Compatible USB‑C to HDMI | A direct cable does not depend on local-device discovery, but tablet support is essential. |
| You own a supported Galaxy Tab and want a desktop-like layout | USB‑C to HDMI with DeX | DeX can provide an external-display workspace on compatible models. |
Troubleshoot a tablet that will not connect
The TV does not appear in the Cast list
- Check that the tablet and TV or streaming device are connected to exactly the same Wi‑Fi network and not merely networks with similar names.
- Turn off or leave any guest, hotel, or public network. Those networks often prevent clients from communicating with one another.
- Open the router settings and look for AP isolation or client isolation. Disable that feature only if you control the network and understand its security implications; it prevents local devices from discovering each other.
- Restart the tablet, TV, and streaming device, then reopen the app.
- Update the Cast-enabled app and the TV or streamer software.
The Cast button is missing
Confirm that the app actually supports Google Cast and that you are viewing a screen where casting is offered. Button placement changes between apps. If the app has no Cast support, use screen casting only if the content permits it, or use a compatible wired connection.
Casting starts but stops or buffers
- Reduce distance between the tablet, access point, and TV or streamer.
- Check whether the devices are on different Wi‑Fi bands and test them on the same band.
- Pause other heavy network activity and retry.
- For a subscription service, verify that the account is signed in and that the selected content is available for TV playback in your region.
The TV shows a blank screen during mirroring
The app or content may prohibit screen capture or external playback. Try the service’s own Cast button. If ordinary tablet screens are also blank, disconnect and reconnect the Cast session, then test with a photo or home screen to separate an app restriction from a connection problem.
Quick Recap
HDMI shows no picture
- Confirm the tablet model supports video output over USB‑C.
- Reseat the adapter at the tablet and both ends of the HDMI cable.
- Select the correct HDMI input on the TV.
- Try another HDMI input or known-good cable.
- Check the adapter’s specifications and the tablet manufacturer’s compatibility list. If the model is not listed as video-capable, replacing the adapter may not solve the problem.
Practical tips for a better viewing session
- Use app casting for long-form video whenever the service supports it; it avoids mirroring notifications and usually gives the TV direct control of playback.
- Keep the tablet awake during initial pairing, even though many apps let you lock it after casting begins.
- Rename multiple TVs or streamers clearly in the Cast list so you do not start playback in another room.
- For presentations, test screen orientation, audio routing, and notification settings before presenting.
- When buying hardware, verify the TV’s free HDMI port, HDCP requirements, exact tablet model, and the network’s ability to allow local communication together. Any one of those constraints can determine which method works.
