Yes—you can connect an Android phone to a Windows PC without Microsoft Phone Link. For a direct copy, unlock the phone, connect a USB data cable, tap the USB notification, and choose File Transfer. For a wireless connection, install Google Quick Share for Windows and send files over a nearby network. Both methods work independently of Phone Link.

Windows 11 also has a wireless File Explorer feature, but Microsoft’s documented setup requires Link to Windows. Treat that as an optional alternative only if you mean “without the Phone Link PC app,” not “without Microsoft’s phone-linking component.”

Choose the right method

The table below separates the two methods that meet a strict no-Phone-Link requirement from the Windows 11 feature that does not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Method Phone Link or Link to Windows required? Cable Best fit Main requirement
USB File Transfer No Yes Direct copying when the phone and PC are together The phone is unlocked, the cable supports data, and File Transfer is selected on the phone
Google Quick Share No No Wireless transfers in either direction between nearby devices Supported Windows edition, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, a shared network, visibility enabled, and devices within 5 metres (16 feet)
Windows 11 File Explorer phone access Yes—Link to Windows No Browsing and managing phone storage from File Explorer Windows 11, Android 11 or later, and Link to Windows version 1.24072.258.0 or later

Official guidance does not establish a universal speed winner. Actual transfer time depends on the file size, cable, storage, wireless conditions, and the devices involved. A wired connection is often the simplest choice when reliability matters, while Quick Share avoids plugging in and supports convenient two-way sending.

Method 1: Transfer files with a USB cable

USB is the simplest option and does not install or pair a phone-management app. It also works when wireless discovery is blocked or the PC has no internet connection. The phone appears as storage only after Android is unlocked and switched from charging mode to file-transfer mode.

What you need

  • An Android phone with its screen unlocked.
  • A USB cable that carries data, not only electrical power.
  • A Windows PC with an available USB port.

Android may charge from a cable that cannot carry files. Google’s Android Help instructions state: “Not all USB cables can transfer files.” If the phone never appears in Windows, the cable is one of the first things to check. A cable that came with a charger can still be power-only, so test it rather than judging by its appearance.

Connect the phone and select File Transfer

  1. Unlock the Android phone and leave it awake.
  2. Connect the phone to the Windows PC with the USB cable.
  3. On the phone, open the notification that says the device is charging over USB.
  4. Under Use USB for, select File Transfer. The wording can vary slightly by Android manufacturer, but the setting is the USB-use choice rather than the ordinary charging option.
  5. Windows should open a file-transfer window or make the phone available in File Explorer. Open the phone’s storage and browse to the folder containing the files.
  6. Drag files between the phone and the Windows folder, or use copy and paste. Keep the phone unlocked if Windows stops displaying its storage.
  7. When finished, use Windows’ eject or safely-remove control before unplugging the cable.

You can copy in either direction. To put a document, photo, or video on the phone, copy it into an appropriate phone folder; to retrieve an item, copy it from the phone into a normal Windows folder. For a large batch, copy a small sample first and open it on the destination before moving the rest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where common files are located

Camera images and videos are commonly under the phone’s DCIM folder. Downloads from browsers and apps are often under Download. Android applications may use their own folders, and some app data is not exposed as ordinary files. If a folder is missing, that can be an Android app-permission or storage-design limitation rather than a failed USB connection.

Photos may also be organized in manufacturer-specific camera folders, and screenshots are commonly stored separately from camera images. Use the phone’s file manager when you cannot identify an item by folder name. Moving or deleting app-managed data can affect the app, so copy personal files rather than altering unfamiliar directories.

Fix a phone that only charges

  1. Reconnect the cable, unlock the phone, and look again for the charging-over-USB notification. Selecting File Transfer is required; charging mode will not expose storage.
  2. Try another USB cable. A cable can provide power while lacking data conductors.
  3. Try a different USB port on the PC. If you are using a hub or dock, connect directly to the computer for this test.
  4. Check whether Windows detects new hardware at all. If nothing changes, test the same phone and cable on another computer, or test another known data-capable cable on this PC.
  5. Restart the phone and the PC, then repeat the connection steps.
  6. Install available phone updates and Windows updates if the connection remains unreliable.

Do not assume that buying a faster-rated cable will solve the problem: the documented issue is whether the cable supports data, and the official instructions do not establish a particular cable speed as necessary. If another cable works immediately, keep the original for charging and label the working one for transfers.

Method 2: Send files wirelessly with Google Quick Share

Quick Share is Google’s nearby-transfer system. It can send files from Android to Windows and from Windows back to Android without Phone Link. It is useful when the devices are in the same room and you want to avoid repeatedly plugging in a cable.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check compatibility first

  • Quick Share is built into Android 6 and later, according to Google’s current product guidance.
  • The Google Quick Share Windows app requires a 64-bit version of Windows 10 or later. ARM-based Windows devices require Windows 11 or later.
  • Google’s Windows app is intended for non-Samsung PCs. Samsung PCs should use Samsung’s Quick Share app from the Microsoft Store instead.
  • Google Quick Share for Windows is unavailable in Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and Syria.
  • Both devices need Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or Ethernet, must be on a shared network, and should be within 5 metres (16 feet).

A shared network does not necessarily mean internet access. The devices need a local path that permits them to discover one another. Some managed office networks deliberately block device-to-device traffic. A Windows PC connected by Ethernet can still meet the network requirement when the phone uses Wi-Fi on the same local network.

Install and configure Quick Share on Windows

  1. Install the Google Quick Share app for Windows from Google’s official distribution.
  2. Open the app normally under your Windows account. Google’s Help Center advises using a standard account rather than launching the app as administrator.
  3. Choose a name for the PC. This is the name shown to nearby senders.
  4. Set the receiving visibility. The available choices include Everyone, Contacts, Your devices, and No one.
  5. Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the PC. If the PC uses Ethernet, leave Wi-Fi available if the app requests it; Quick Share’s requirements include Bluetooth plus Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

For routine personal transfers, signing in and selecting Contacts or Your devices limits who can discover the PC. Use Everyone only when you need a less restricted receiving window, and return to a narrower setting afterward. No one prevents ordinary incoming discovery, so it is unsuitable while you are waiting for a transfer.

Send from Android to Windows

  1. On the Android phone, select one or more files in Files, Photos, or the app that contains them.
  2. Tap Share, then choose Quick Share. On some phones the command is in the share sheet’s additional options.
  3. Wait for the Windows PC’s chosen Quick Share name to appear. Keep the devices nearby with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
  4. Tap the PC name. If Windows asks for approval, accept the incoming transfer.
  5. After completion, look in the Windows Downloads/Quick Share folder.

Incoming transfers require receiver approval. If you do not want a transfer, decline it rather than accepting and deleting the files later. If several nearby devices appear, compare the PC name you configured before selecting one.

Send from Windows to Android

  1. Open the Quick Share Windows app.
  2. Choose files in the app, or drag files into its window.
  3. Select the Android phone from the list of available devices.
  4. Watch the phone for the incoming-transfer prompt and have the recipient approve it.
  5. Wait for the completion message before closing the app or disabling connectivity.

The destination folder on Android depends on the phone’s software and the receiving app’s handling. Use the phone’s file manager or notification after acceptance to locate the transferred item. For a mixed batch, send a single test file first so you can confirm where that phone stores received items.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy and encryption

Quick Share combines visibility controls with an approval prompt. Google says in its Quick Share for Windows FAQ: “All Quick Share transfers are protected by E2E encryption.” Encryption does not make an accidentally accepted transfer safe, so keep the visibility mode and approval decision deliberate. Before using Everyone in a public place, check the device name and switch back to Contacts, Your devices, or No one when finished.

Fix Quick Share discovery and transfer failures

  1. Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on both devices.
  2. Confirm Wi-Fi is enabled on both devices, or that the Windows PC is using Ethernet as supported by the app.
  3. Check that both devices are on the same local network and are within 5 metres (16 feet).
  4. Check receiving visibility on the phone and in the Windows app. A device set to No one will not appear to ordinary senders.
  5. Move away from crowded wireless areas or physical obstructions and retry.
  6. If this is an office, school, hotel, or guest network, assume device-to-device traffic may be blocked. Google’s documented workaround is to turn off Wi-Fi on the phone, enable the phone’s hotspot, and connect the Windows PC to that hotspot; then retry Quick Share.
  7. If a transfer arrives but no Windows prompt appears, inspect Windows notification settings and turn off Focus Assist or Do not disturb temporarily.
  8. Close and reopen the Quick Share app, then toggle Bluetooth and Wi-Fi off and on before trying again.

Do not substitute Microsoft’s Windows Nearby sharing feature for Quick Share. Microsoft’s Nearby sharing documentation describes sharing between Windows PCs; it does not establish Android-to-Windows transfer support.

Optional: browse Android storage in Windows 11 File Explorer

Windows 11 can expose an Android phone in File Explorer so you can browse folders and open, copy, move, rename, or delete files wirelessly. This is convenient for ongoing file management, but it is not independent of Microsoft’s phone-linking component.

Requirements

  • Windows 11.
  • Android 11 or later.
  • Link to Windows version 1.24072.258.0 or later.
  • A phone that supports the feature and can be paired through Windows’ mobile-device settings.

Set it up

  1. Open Windows Settings.
  2. Go to Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices > Manage Devices.
  3. Pair the Android phone when Windows presents the pairing flow.
  4. Enable Show mobile device in File Explorer.
  5. Open File Explorer and select the phone when it appears in the navigation pane.

Microsoft’s documented setup uses Link to Windows. If your requirement is strictly “no Phone Link or Link to Windows,” do not use this method; choose USB or Quick Share instead. If you only want to avoid installing the Phone Link PC app while accepting the linked-phone component, this feature may fit. It is most useful for repeated browsing and file housekeeping, rather than as a way to avoid every Microsoft phone integration.

Decide between USB and Quick Share

Choose USB when

  • You need a predictable local connection without Bluetooth or network discovery.
  • The PC is on a restricted network, offline, or managed by an organization.
  • You are moving a large folder and already have a known data-capable cable.
  • You want ordinary File Explorer drag-and-drop without installing software.
  • You do not want to change visibility settings or approve a wireless request.

Choose Quick Share when

  • You are transferring a few files and do not want to connect a cable.
  • You need transfers in either direction while the devices remain nearby.
  • The PC meets the 64-bit Windows requirement and both devices can use the same local network.
  • You want visibility controls and encrypted transfers with receiver approval.
  • The correct Quick Share app is available for your PC type and region.

Choose File Explorer phone access when

  • You use Windows 11 and want repeated wireless browsing, renaming, moving, or deleting of phone files.
  • You accept the requirement for Link to Windows and the stated Android and version prerequisites.

A practical troubleshooting order

When a connection fails, identify whether the problem is physical, visibility-related, or policy-related instead of changing several settings at once.

  1. For USB: unlock the phone, select File Transfer, then test another cable and USB port.
  2. For Quick Share: verify Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, shared-network access, visibility, and the 5-metre distance.
  3. Check the operating-system requirements: Quick Share needs 64-bit Windows 10 or later, with Windows 11 or later for ARM PCs; File Explorer phone access needs Windows 11 and Android 11 or later.
  4. Check network policy: a corporate or guest network may block local discovery. Use the phone-hotspot workaround documented for Quick Share, or switch to USB.
  5. Check notifications: approval prompts can be hidden by Windows notification settings or Focus Assist.
  6. Check the app type: Samsung PCs should use Samsung’s Quick Share app, while non-Samsung PCs use Google’s Windows app.
  7. Restart only after the basic checks: restarting both devices can clear a stuck USB enumeration or wireless-discovery session, but it cannot make an unsupported cable or operating-system combination compatible.

Why is my phone only charging when I plug it into my computer?

The phone may still be set to charging mode, or the cable may be power-only. Select File Transfer under Use USB for, then try another cable and USB port. Not all USB cables transfer files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I send files wirelessly from Android to Windows?

Install and open Google Quick Share for Windows, set the PC name and receiving visibility, then use Android’s Share menu and choose Quick Share. Select the PC and approve the request on Windows. Files received by Windows go to Downloads/Quick Share.

Does Quick Share need internet access?

The listed requirements are Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, a shared local network, and a distance of no more than 5 metres (16 feet). Internet access is not stated as a separate requirement, but a network that blocks device-to-device traffic can prevent discovery.

Why can’t Quick Share find my PC?

Check Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, local-network membership, the 5-metre distance, and receiving visibility. Make sure you installed the appropriate Google or Samsung app for the PC. On a managed network, connect the PC to the phone’s hotspot after turning off Wi-Fi on the phone, then retry.

Are Quick Share transfers private?

Google states that all Quick Share transfers are protected by end-to-end encryption. You must still choose visibility carefully and approve only requests you recognize. Contacts or Your devices are narrower choices than Everyone.
