There is no universal Android-to-robot pairing sequence. The correct process depends on the robot model, its manufacturer’s app, the discovery method it uses, and the Wi-Fi networks it supports. Identify the exact model first, install its official Android app, put the robot into the pairing mode described in its manual, grant the requested Android permissions, and follow the app’s prompts. If pairing fails, check power, pairing mode, permissions, phone distance, Wi-Fi band, and any temporary robot network before resetting anything.
Why robot pairing differs from one model to another
“Connect the robot to an Android phone” can describe several different operations. Some robots are discovered directly by an app over Bluetooth, some create a temporary Wi-Fi network that your phone must join, and others use Bluetooth only to begin sending your home-network credentials. The app may also require an account, a selected country or region, or a particular Wi-Fi band.
For that reason, a button combination that works on one vacuum, pool robot, or floor-cleaning robot may do nothing on another. Use the exact app and instructions for your model. The examples in this guide show how different the procedures can be; they are not interchangeable recipes.
Prepare before you open the pairing screen
1. Identify the exact model and its official app
Read the label on the robot, dock, or packaging and confirm the full model designation. Then open the manufacturer’s support page or manual and verify:

- the Android app name and the current app listing;
- whether the model is sold or supported in your country or region;
- whether an account or region selection is required;
- the supported Wi-Fi bands, encryption, and network types;
- the button sequence, light pattern, or voice prompt that starts setup.
For example, Roborock’s Android procedure begins by installing its app from Google Play, selecting a region, and registering before adding the cleaner. Its instructions are model- and app-specific: Roborock’s Android setup guide.
2. Power and position the robot
Connect the robot to power or place it on its charged dock as the manual requires. A robot that is switched off, critically low on charge, or not fully booted may not advertise itself for setup. Keep the phone close to the robot during discovery. For initial Wi-Fi configuration, move the robot near the router if the manufacturer recommends it; this removes weak-signal problems while credentials are being transferred.
3. Prepare the Android phone
Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth if the app requests them. Keep mobile data available only when the manufacturer’s instructions allow it; some setup flows work more reliably with mobile data temporarily disabled. If a VPN or security application creates a VPN connection, temporarily disable it only when the manufacturer’s troubleshooting page specifically recommends that check, as Tapo does for its setup flow.

Use the exact Wi-Fi name and password accepted by the robot. Do not assume that every robot supports 5 GHz, WPA modes, hidden networks, mesh steering, or enterprise authentication. Network restrictions are model-specific.

Android permissions that affect pairing
Android’s permission names changed as the operating system and app target versions evolved. A permission request is usually about allowing the app to discover or configure nearby devices, not proof that the robot is tracking your location.
Bluetooth permissions on Android 12 and later
For apps targeting Android 12 (API level 31) or later, scanning, advertising, and connecting use runtime Nearby devices permissions. Android Developers states: “The BLUETOOTH_ADVERTISE, BLUETOOTH_CONNECT, and BLUETOOTH_SCAN permissions are runtime permissions.” See the Bluetooth permissions documentation.
Older app targets can behave differently. Bluetooth scanning by apps targeting Android 11 or earlier may require location permission, which is why one manufacturer’s setup can show a location prompt while another requests Nearby devices.
Nearby Wi-Fi permission on Android 13 and later
Android 13 (API level 33) introduced NEARBY_WIFI_DEVICES for apps that manage nearby Wi-Fi connections. Android Developers says: “Apps that target Android 13 (API level 33) or higher and manage Wi-Fi connections should request the NEARBY_WIFI_DEVICES runtime permission.” API-specific exceptions and older Android behavior still apply; details are in the nearby Wi-Fi permissions documentation.

Location Services and companion-device discovery
Some apps request location access because of Android’s historical Bluetooth and Wi-Fi scanning rules. Android’s Companion Device Manager can scan on an app’s behalf without location permission on Android 8.0 and later, but Location Services must be enabled and the manager does not establish the connection by itself. The limitations are documented in Android’s companion-device pairing guide.
The main robot pairing methods
Look for the method used by your model rather than trying every method in the table.

Step-by-step: connect most robots from an Android phone
- Install the manufacturer’s official app. Use the app named in the robot’s manual, not a similarly named third-party utility. Sign in or create the required account, and select the correct country or region when prompted.
- Put the robot on power. Wait for startup to finish. If the manual requires a dock, leave the robot on the dock during setup.
- Enter configuration mode. Perform only the button sequence published for your exact model. For example, Xiaomi’s cited Mi Robot Vacuum uses Power plus Recharge until the blue indicator flashes, while Tapo’s cited procedure uses its own Dock plus Spot Cleaning combination. Treat these as examples, not universal controls.
- Accept the app’s permission requests. Allow Nearby devices, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, location, or other permissions when the app explains that they are needed for discovery or setup. If you previously denied a request, open Android Settings, find the app, and enable the relevant permission before retrying.
- Start Add device in the app. Keep the phone within a short distance of the robot and wait for discovery. Do not switch repeatedly between apps while the robot is advertising itself.
- Complete any Bluetooth step. Some models use Bluetooth only to identify the robot and begin Wi-Fi configuration. Others use it for the entire local connection. Follow the app’s exact prompts rather than pairing from Android’s general Bluetooth menu unless the manufacturer tells you to.
- Join a temporary robot network if instructed. If the app asks you to leave the app and open Wi-Fi settings, select the temporary network named by the manufacturer. For the cited ECOVACS Android flow, this can be a network beginning “ECOVACS.” Return to the manufacturer’s app immediately after joining it.
- Select the home Wi-Fi. Choose the network and enter its password exactly. Confirm the band and network type are supported by the model. The ECOVACS device described in its initial-connection instructions accepts 2.4 GHz but not 5 GHz or enterprise networks; that restriction must not be generalized to every robot.
- Wait for completion. Keep the phone and robot near the router until the app reports that setup or initialization is complete. Check the robot’s documented light, WLAN symbol, voice prompt, or connectivity LED. Some Roborock setup instructions specifically tell you to open the device and wait for initialization to reach 100%.
- Test the connection. From the app, refresh the device status and issue a harmless command such as locating the robot or starting a brief status update. If the app still shows setup, do not repeatedly reset the robot; troubleshoot the displayed stage first.
Wi-Fi compatibility: what to verify instead of guessing
A robot can be discoverable over Bluetooth yet fail when it joins the home network. Check these items in the model’s manual:

- Network type: enterprise authentication, captive-portal networks, and some guest networks may be unsupported.
- Security mode: use the security modes explicitly listed for the model.
- SSID visibility: confirm whether hidden network names are supported.
- Signal strength: configure the robot near the router when the manufacturer recommends strong coverage.
- Password characters: re-enter the password carefully; a successful phone connection does not prove that the robot received the same password.
The only specific band limitation established in the cited examples is the ECOVACS device described as supporting 2.4 GHz and excluding 5 GHz and enterprise networks. Other brands and models may differ, so do not buy a new router or extender solely because one robot failed to pair.

Troubleshoot by the symptom you see
The app cannot find the robot
- Confirm that the robot is switched on, sufficiently charged, and in the exact pairing or configuration mode required by its manual.
- Move the phone close to the robot. Turn on Bluetooth or Wi-Fi according to the app’s instructions.
- Review the app’s permissions in Android Settings. A denied Nearby devices, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or location permission can stop discovery.
- Close and reopen the manufacturer’s app, then retry the Add device flow.
- If the app uses a temporary robot network, open Android Wi-Fi settings and join the named network manually when instructed. ECOVACS’s cited Android procedure uses a network beginning “ECOVACS,” after which you return to the app.
- For the Tapo flow, temporarily turn off mobile data and any VPN or security software that uses a VPN, then restart the app or phone. Tapo also lists trying another phone or tablet as a targeted diagnostic.
The phone finds the robot, but home Wi-Fi setup fails
- Verify the Wi-Fi password character by character.
- Check the robot’s supported band and network type. Do not force a 5 GHz-only network on a model documented as 2.4 GHz-only.
- Move the robot near the router during setup, as recommended in the Tapo and ECOVACS instructions.
- Confirm that the robot remains powered and that its setup light or voice prompt still indicates configuration mode.
- If the app handed the phone to a temporary robot network, return to the manufacturer’s app after joining that network manually.
- Retry only after the app returns to the appropriate stage; switching to a different brand’s reset sequence can leave the robot in an unknown state.
The app connects, but initialization never finishes
First follow the app’s current progress screen and wait for its completion state. Roborock’s cited Android instructions tell users to open the device and wait for initialization to reach 100%. For Maytronics, the cited troubleshooting flow says to go back, select the robot again, and continue when the app is stuck on a loading screen: Maytronics connection troubleshooting.
If the screen remains stalled, close and reopen the app, restart the phone, and repeat the model’s documented setup flow. Check the robot’s indicator at the same time; a steady or blinking WLAN light can distinguish “still configuring” from “disconnected.” Use a factory reset only when the manufacturer’s instructions for that exact model call for it.
The robot disconnects after initially pairing
- Check whether the phone is still connected to the same home network used during setup.
- Look for a weak signal where the robot normally operates; initial setup near the router does not guarantee coverage in another room.
- Confirm that the router has not changed its network name or password.
- Open the app and check whether it reports the robot as offline, updating, or requiring reconfiguration.
- Repeat the manufacturer’s reconnect procedure rather than deleting the device immediately; deletion can require the full pairing sequence again.
Model-specific details worth checking
ECOVACS: temporary network handoff and QR setup
ECOVACS documents two relevant patterns. Its initial-connection page describes a device that supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi but not 5 GHz or enterprise networks. During Android setup, automatic handoff to the robot’s temporary network may fail; the documented workaround is to open Wi-Fi settings, select the network beginning “ECOVACS,” return to the app, and wait for configuration.

Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum: a defined button combination
The cited Xiaomi procedure uses the Power and Recharge buttons together until the blue indicator flashes, then continues in Xiaomi Home. That flashing light is meaningful for the named procedure only. Do not apply it to another Xiaomi model or another manufacturer’s robot without confirmation from its manual.
Roborock: account, region, and initialization
Roborock’s Android instructions begin with the app installation, region selection, and registration. After adding the cleaner and entering the home Wi-Fi credentials, the app may show an initialization phase. Open the device and wait for the progress to reach 100% before treating the setup as complete.
Vorwerk Kobold VR7: Bluetooth and location prompts
The VR7 setup guidance lists Bluetooth and location access among the requirements for app pairing and describes blinking or steady WLAN indications. If Android shows a location request during this flow, it reflects the app and Android discovery requirements; it does not by itself indicate that the robot is collecting a phone location history.

Tapo: targeted network-interference checks
Tapo’s troubleshooting page is unusually specific about setup interference: turn off mobile data, temporarily disable VPN or security software that uses a VPN, close and reopen the app, restart the phone, or try another phone or tablet. These are checks for that flow, not permanent Android requirements and not proof that every robot needs mobile data disabled.
When a reset is appropriate—and when it is not
Resetting a robot can erase its saved Wi-Fi credentials, schedules, maps, or account association. Before resetting:
- record the exact model and current indicator pattern;
- capture any error message shown in the app;
- confirm that power, permissions, distance, and network compatibility have been checked;
- read the reset section for the exact model.
Use only the published button sequence for that robot. The Xiaomi Power-plus-Recharge sequence, the Tapo Dock-plus-Spot Cleaning sequence, and other combinations in manufacturer documentation are examples of model-specific controls, not a universal reset method. After a reset, repeat the full account, permission, pairing, and Wi-Fi process from the beginning.
A concise diagnostic checklist
- Exact robot model and official Android app confirmed.
- Correct country or region selected and account created if required.
- Robot powered, sufficiently charged, and in its documented setup mode.
- Phone close to the robot and required radios enabled.
- Android permissions granted for the app’s actual discovery method.
- Home Wi-Fi band, security, password, and network type verified against the manual.
- Temporary robot network joined manually when the app instructs you to do so.
- VPN, mobile-data, or security-software checks performed only where the manufacturer recommends them.
- Robot and router moved closer for setup when signal is questionable.
- Completion indicator, voice prompt, or app initialization status confirmed.
Do you need extra hardware?
Not by default. The documented setup procedures do not establish a universal need for a new router, Wi-Fi extender, Bluetooth adapter, replacement battery, or other accessory. Buy or borrow hardware only after the exact model’s requirements and the actual fault point show that it is necessary. Most first-time failures are resolved by using the correct app, entering the correct configuration mode, granting permissions, selecting a supported network, or improving signal during setup.
