You can use an Android phone with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, but only if the specific phone supports external video output. A USB-C connector alone is not enough. First verify the exact model’s display-output and desktop-mode support; then choose either a USB-C-to-HDMI cable or adapter, an HDMI-capable hub or dock, and Bluetooth or USB input devices.
The monitor may simply mirror the phone screen, or the phone may start a separate desktop session such as Samsung DeX. Menus, supported accessories, and results vary by manufacturer, Android version, monitor, and cable.
What you need to check before buying anything
Android’s connected-display features are not universal. Google Android Help states, “This feature isn’t available on all devices and the experience may vary.” A phone can have USB-C charging and data but lack the hardware or software required to send video to a monitor.
Confirm the exact phone model
Look up the complete model name in the manufacturer’s current specifications or support documentation. Do not rely on a family name alone: two phones in the same series can have different USB capabilities. Confirm all of the following:

- External display or wired video output is supported.
- The supported connection method, such as USB-C DisplayPort output or a manufacturer-approved HDMI adapter.
- Whether the phone offers a desktop interface or only screen mirroring.
- The Android and manufacturer software version required for the feature.
- Any restrictions on resolution, refresh rate, wireless display, charging, or supported displays.
If the documentation does not say that the phone supports external video, assume an adapter will not create that capability. An HDMI adapter changes the connector; it does not add a missing video-output function.
Check the monitor or television
For a wired setup, identify an available HDMI input and the monitor’s input-selection control. For wireless display features, check the exact compatibility requirement. Samsung’s wireless DeX documentation, for example, calls for a supported Samsung TV or a Miracast-capable display; that is not a general requirement or feature for every Android phone.
Decide whether you need a desktop session
A monitor connection can have two very different outcomes:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Mirrored mode: the monitor copies the phone display. Apps remain in their normal phone layout, and the phone screen usually shows the same activity.
- Desktop mode: the monitor receives a separate session with resizable windows, a taskbar or launcher, and pointer-oriented controls. The phone can remain available for other actions, depending on the implementation.
Android Help documents both possibilities for supported devices. The phone maker determines which mode is available and how it is selected.
Choose the connection that fits your setup
| Option | What connects to what | Best when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB-C-to-HDMI cable or adapter | Phone USB-C port directly to the monitor’s HDMI input | You want the fewest parts and only need display output | Requires a phone with supported video output; usually provides no USB ports for wired peripherals |
| USB-C HDMI hub or dock | Phone to the hub; hub HDMI to the monitor; keyboard and mouse to the hub’s USB ports | You want one connection point for display and wired accessories | The phone must support video output, and the hub must support the required display connection and power arrangement |
| Bluetooth keyboard and mouse | Each peripheral pairs directly with the phone | You want to avoid cables and preserve the hub’s USB ports | Each device needs pairing and its own battery or charging |
| Wired USB keyboard and mouse | Peripherals connect to a compatible hub, dock, or OTG adapter | You prefer a direct connection or already have USB accessories | Port type, OTG support, power draw, and available USB ports must all match |
| Wireless desktop display | Phone sends the display to a compatible TV or monitor over wireless networking | You want no HDMI cable | Availability is device-specific and wireless links can add delay or stutter |
A direct adapter is simplest for a phone, monitor, and Bluetooth peripherals. A hub or dock is more practical when you want a wired keyboard and mouse, charging, storage, or other USB devices at the same time. These are connection categories, not guarantees that every product combination will work.
How to make a wired monitor connection
1. Prepare the phone and display
- Install any manufacturer-recommended Android or system-interface update, then restart the phone if the documentation requires it.
- Turn on the monitor and identify the HDMI input you will use.
- Unlock the phone. Some devices require the first connection or a permission prompt to be completed while the phone is unlocked.
- Place the phone near the monitor so you can read notifications and change the display mode.
2. Connect with a direct USB-C-to-HDMI cable or adapter
- Plug the USB-C end into the phone’s USB-C port.
- Connect the HDMI end to the monitor.
- Use the monitor’s Input, Source, or similar control to select that HDMI port.
- Wait for the phone to detect the display. If a notification or Quick Settings control appears, choose the available display mode.
Samsung documents this arrangement for supported DeX devices with a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable. On other Android phones, use the manufacturer’s documented method rather than assuming Samsung’s menus or behavior apply.

- Vivid Video: The HDMI adapter lets you connect to any TV or display with an HDMI port to stream video in up to 4K resolution.
- Plug and Play: Instantly turn your laptop’s USB-C port into an HDMI port, with no installation necessary. This product does not support charging or Power Delivery (PD).
- Premium Construction: A lightweight aluminum casing allows for greater heat dissipation, while the reinforced braided-nylon cable is designed to withstand the twists and tugs of daily use.
- Compatibility: Supports USB-C DP Alt mode, USB4, and Thunderbolt connections.
3. Connect through a hub or dock
- Attach an HDMI cable from the hub or dock’s HDMI output to the monitor.
- Connect the hub or dock to the phone’s USB-C port.
- If the hub has a power-input port and the phone’s documentation recommends external power, connect the appropriate charger before attaching high-power USB devices.
- Connect a wired keyboard and mouse to the hub’s USB ports.
- Select the monitor’s HDMI input and wait for the phone’s display notification or desktop-mode prompt.
A hub does not bypass the phone’s video-output requirement. If the phone cannot produce a display signal, an HDMI-equipped hub will still show no picture.
4. Select mirroring or desktop mode
Some phones begin by mirroring automatically. On supported Samsung DeX devices, Samsung says the user can select DeX from the notification shade or Quick Settings when the initial connection mirrors the phone. Your phone may use different labels, offer only one mode, or provide a display setting in its system menu. If no mode selector appears, consult the model-specific support page rather than following a generic Android path.
How to connect a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse
Bluetooth is usually the least complicated way to add input because it does not consume USB ports on the phone or hub.
- Charge the keyboard and mouse or install their batteries.
- Put each device into pairing mode. The required button or key combination is normally printed on the device or in its instructions.
- On the phone, open the Bluetooth settings and turn Bluetooth on.
- Select the keyboard from the list of available devices and confirm the pairing code if Android displays one.
- Repeat the process for the mouse.
- Open a text field to test typing, then move the pointer across the monitor or phone screen.
Samsung documents Bluetooth pairing for DeX. Android’s exact settings label and location can vary by manufacturer and software version. If a device was paired with another computer, disconnect it there or clear its old pairing before trying again.
What to expect from Bluetooth input
- A keyboard may work for typing even when the monitor is only mirroring the phone.
- Pointer behavior and gesture support depend on the phone’s display mode and Android software.
- Bluetooth devices can remain paired when the monitor is disconnected, so remove them from Bluetooth settings if you no longer want automatic reconnection.
- Wireless interference, low battery, or a device that is still connected to another host can look like an Android problem.
How to connect a wired keyboard and mouse
Use a hub or dock with USB ports when possible. If the peripheral has a USB-A plug and the phone or dock provides only USB-C, an OTG adapter may be required. Samsung specifically notes that USB-A devices may need an OTG adapter for a USB-C connection.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Connect the hub, dock, or OTG adapter to the phone.
- Plug the keyboard and mouse into available USB ports.
- Wait several seconds for Android to recognize them.
- Test the keyboard in a text field and move the pointer.
- If the devices do not respond, disconnect one at a time to identify a power or compatibility conflict.
Wired input can draw power from the phone. A keyboard with lighting, a mouse with extensive lighting, or several USB devices may exceed what the phone can supply. A powered dock or the hub’s documented power-input arrangement can help, but only when the phone and dock support that configuration.

Using the phone as a touchpad
If you have no mouse, supported Samsung DeX setups can use the phone screen as a touchpad. Android’s desktop-windowing guidance also describes keyboard-and-trackpad interaction for supported devices. The relevant touchpad control appears only on devices and modes that implement it, so its absence does not indicate a faulty cable.
Samsung DeX: a documented Android example
Samsung DeX is one manufacturer-specific desktop route. Samsung publishes a supported Galaxy model-family list and excludes the Z Flip series from external-display DeX. Check that current list for the exact model before purchasing a cable, because support can change with hardware and software updates.
Wired DeX
For a supported phone, Samsung documents a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable to an HDMI monitor or TV. A compatible hub can provide HDMI plus USB ports for a keyboard and mouse. When the phone initially mirrors, Samsung says DeX can be selected from the notification or Quick Settings panel.

Wireless DeX
Wireless DeX is separate from a wired HDMI connection. Samsung documents support for compatible Samsung TVs and Miracast-capable displays. Keep the phone and display close to reduce the possibility of stutter or lag. Wireless DeX is not a universal Android feature and should not be assumed to work on another manufacturer’s phone.
DeX for PC is not the same as monitor DeX
Samsung separately states that DeX for PC is unsupported on phones running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later. That restriction concerns using DeX inside a computer connection. It should not be read as a blanket statement that standalone monitor DeX is unavailable. Check the model’s current support documentation for the monitor scenario you intend to use.
Disconnecting DeX
Samsung says unplugging HDMI restarts DeX. Save documents and close important work before disconnecting the cable or hub so an abrupt session restart does not interrupt unsaved changes.

Screen mirroring versus a desktop workspace
| Characteristic | Mirrored phone screen | Desktop session |
|---|---|---|
| Display content | Copies the phone’s current screen | Uses a separate windowed interface when supported |
| Phone use while connected | Actions generally appear on both screens | The phone may remain available for other tasks, depending on implementation |
| Keyboard and mouse | Useful for text entry and pointer control where Android supports it | Designed for windows, menus, task switching, and desktop-style pointer use |
| Availability | Device- and software-dependent | More restricted; requires a phone and interface that explicitly support desktop mode |
Neither mode automatically turns every Android app into a desktop application. Some apps remain portrait-oriented, restrict resizing, or behave differently with a pointer. Your monitor’s resolution and the phone’s supported output also determine how much workspace is available.
Troubleshooting: fix problems in the right order
No picture or “No signal”
- Confirm that the exact phone model supports external video output.
- Check that the cable or hub is intended to carry video, not merely charge or transfer data.
- Verify that the HDMI cable is firmly seated at both ends.
- Select the correct HDMI input on the monitor.
- Unlock the phone and accept any connection prompt.
- Try the manufacturer’s documented adapter or connection method.
- Disconnect and reconnect only after saving work, particularly on DeX, where Samsung says unplugging HDMI restarts the session.
If the phone lacks supported video output, changing the monitor input or buying another passive adapter will not solve the problem.
The monitor mirrors, but no desktop mode appears
Mirroring may be the only supported behavior. Check whether the exact model supports a desktop interface and whether the feature requires a particular software version. On Samsung devices, look for the DeX option in the notification or Quick Settings area after the display is connected. Other manufacturers may use different controls.
The keyboard or mouse is not detected
- For Bluetooth, put the accessory back into pairing mode, remove an old pairing, and make sure it is not connected to another device.
- For USB, test one peripheral at a time and confirm that the hub, dock, or OTG adapter supports the connector type.
- Check the hub’s power arrangement if several devices are attached.
- Try a different USB port on the hub and restart the phone if Android does not enumerate the device.
- If the pointer works on the phone but not the monitor, verify that the phone is in the intended display mode.
Wireless display is delayed or stutters
Move the phone closer to the compatible display, reduce nearby wireless congestion, and check that both devices meet the manufacturer’s support requirements. Samsung specifically recommends keeping the phone and display close for wireless DeX. A wired HDMI connection is the more predictable choice when latency matters.
The phone gets hot, drains quickly, or disconnects
External display, desktop rendering, Bluetooth, and USB peripherals all add workload. Use a charger or powered hub only as recommended for the phone and accessory. Reduce the number of attached USB devices, remove unnecessary lighting from peripherals, and keep the phone’s vents unobstructed. If the connection drops when a peripheral is attached, test the display alone, then add devices one by one.
A practical connection plan
For the highest chance of success, follow this order:
- Identify the exact phone model and verify external video output.
- Confirm whether you need mirroring or a separate desktop session.
- Check the monitor’s input and the manufacturer’s supported cable or adapter.
- Choose a direct HDMI adapter for a simple display, or an HDMI hub when you need wired USB input.
- Pair Bluetooth devices first if you want to avoid USB power and cabling.
- Connect the monitor, select the correct input, and unlock the phone.
- Select the available display mode, then test the keyboard and mouse.
- Save work before disconnecting, and troubleshoot one variable at a time if anything fails.
This approach prevents the most common mistake: buying a USB-C accessory before confirming that the phone can output video.
