There is no separate “Windows 11 phone.” Windows 11 runs on the PC. You have two different ways to use a phone with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse: connect the phone to a Windows 11 PC with Microsoft Phone Link, or connect a compatible phone directly to an external monitor and run its own desktop interface.
Choose Phone Link when you want phone apps or a phone-screen view inside Windows. Choose a direct monitor connection when the phone itself supports wired video output and a desktop experience such as Samsung DeX, Motorola Mobile Desktop, or supported Android desktop windowing. A USB-C socket alone does not prove that a phone can drive a monitor.
First, decide which setup you actually need
The phrase “connect a Windows 11 phone” usually describes one of two goals, but they use different hardware and software.
| Goal | Where the phone experience runs | Main requirements | What appears on the display |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use phone apps from a Windows 11 computer | Inside Windows through Phone Link | Windows 10 or 11 PC, supported Android or iPhone features, and the devices connected as required by Microsoft | Phone apps or a phone-screen view in a Windows window |
| Use the phone as a desktop computer | On the phone, with video sent to the monitor | A phone model with wired external-video support, a compatible cable or adapter, a suitable monitor input, and a supported desktop interface | A phone-powered desktop such as DeX, Mobile Desktop, or supported Android desktop windowing |
Phone Link is not a cable that turns a phone into a Windows desktop. Microsoft describes it as a way to access supported phone features from a Windows PC. The phone’s apps remain on the phone while their content or controls are presented on the PC.

Option 1: use phone apps on a Windows 11 PC with Phone Link
Check the requirements
Microsoft’s Phone Link requirements and setup page lists a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC. For the Android connection, Microsoft requires Android 10 or later, and the phone and PC must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Available features vary by phone model and market.
- Use a supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC.
- For Android, use Android 10 or later.
- Connect the PC and phone to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Install or open Phone Link on the PC and Link to Windows on the phone when prompted.
- Keep the phone nearby while pairing and approve the permissions requested during setup.
iPhone support exists in Phone Link, but the Android-specific app and phone-screen functions described below require a compatible Android device. Do not assume that every Phone Link feature is available on every phone.
Pair the phone and PC
- Open Phone Link on the Windows 11 PC. If Windows asks which type of phone you use, choose Android or iPhone as appropriate.
- On the phone, install or open Link to Windows. Microsoft commonly presents a QR-code pairing flow; scan the code shown by Phone Link when prompted.
- Sign in or confirm the account requested by the setup screens, then approve the phone permissions. These permissions allow the PC to display the supported phone functions you select.
- Leave both devices on the same Wi-Fi network until pairing completes. If the QR code expires, generate a new one in Phone Link and scan it again.
- When Phone Link reports that the devices are connected, open the feature you need, such as Apps or Phone screen, from the PC window.
The exact labels can change with Windows and Link to Windows updates. Follow the current prompts rather than looking for a setting copied from an older screenshot.
Use Android apps from Windows
Microsoft’s Use apps from your Android device on your PC documentation explains that supported Android phones can expose installed phone apps in Phone Link. Selecting an app opens it in a Windows window, but the app is still running on the phone. The PC is providing the viewing and interaction surface, not replacing the phone’s operating system.

This arrangement is useful when the monitor, keyboard, and mouse are already attached to the Windows 11 computer. You do not need to run a video cable from the phone to that monitor: the PC displays the Phone Link window. The phone must remain connected according to Microsoft’s requirements, including the Wi-Fi connection used for the Phone Link session.
Use the Phone screen view
Phone screen is a separate Phone Link feature. Microsoft’s setting-up and using phone screen guidance limits it to supported Android devices, including Android 10 or greater models with Link to Windows pre-installed, and to select markets.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Complete Phone Link pairing first.
- In Phone Link, open the Phone screen feature if it is offered for your device.
- Accept any additional permission or confirmation request on the phone.
- Use the phone display shown in the Windows window. Click or tap with the PC mouse and type with the PC keyboard where the phone app accepts those controls.
Microsoft cautions that some apps and games may not respond properly to keyboard and mouse input. Touch-oriented controls, protected content, or app-specific input handling can make a phone app behave differently from a normal Windows application.
What Phone Link can and cannot do
- It can: place supported Android apps or a phone-screen view in a Windows 11 window, letting you interact from the PC.
- It cannot: make the phone itself a Windows 11 device.
- It does not require: the phone to provide wired HDMI video to the monitor when the monitor is already connected to the Windows PC.
- It may not provide: every Android app, phone-screen feature, or keyboard and mouse interaction on every model or in every country.
Option 2: connect the phone directly to a monitor
Verify wired video support before buying anything
Start with the exact model number, not just the phone brand or the presence of USB-C. Google’s Android guidance for desktop windowing and connected displays explicitly limits the feature to supported devices. A USB-C connector can be used for charging or data without carrying a display signal.
Look in the phone manufacturer’s current specifications or support instructions for both of these capabilities:

- Wired external video: the phone can send a display signal through its USB-C port.
- Desktop or external-display software: the phone can provide a usable interface on the monitor instead of merely charging or showing an unsupported image.
Samsung documents DeX for compatible Galaxy phones. Motorola documents Mobile Desktop through Smart Connect on supported phones. Other Android devices may expose desktop windowing only when the model and software version support it. If the official documentation does not list wired display output for your exact model, treat the connection as unverified rather than assuming an adapter will solve it.

The cable must support video, and the monitor must have an input that matches the connection. Samsung lists a DeX cable, a USB-C-to-HDMI cable, or a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter for compatible Galaxy phones in its DeX support instructions. Motorola’s Smart Connect instructions describe a video-capable USB 3.1 USB-C cable or a USB-C-to-HDMI cable for supported phones.
A plain charging cable is not an equivalent substitute. If the monitor accepts HDMI, use a phone-compatible USB-C-to-HDMI path. If you use a USB-C hub, confirm that its USB-C input and HDMI output are designed for video, not only charging and USB data.
Connect the keyboard and mouse
The simplest wired arrangement is a compatible multiport adapter connected to the phone. Plug the monitor cable into the adapter’s video output, then connect the keyboard and mouse to the adapter’s USB ports. The phone may need enough power for the adapter and peripherals; follow the phone and adapter instructions if external power is available.
Bluetooth is another possibility when the phone and its desktop interface support Bluetooth input. Samsung documents pairing a keyboard and mouse with DeX. Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings, put each peripheral into pairing mode, select it, and complete pairing before or after starting the desktop session, depending on the manufacturer’s instructions.

Motorola describes using supported phones with an external display and peripheral input through Smart Connect. Because ports, power behavior, and supported peripherals differ by model, use the current instructions for that phone rather than assuming that every USB hub or Bluetooth accessory will work.
Start a direct desktop session
- Confirm the exact phone model’s wired-video and desktop-mode support.
- Connect the monitor’s HDMI, USB-C, or other supported input to the phone using the manufacturer-approved cable or adapter type.
- Connect a wired keyboard and mouse through a compatible multiport adapter, or pair supported Bluetooth peripherals.
- Turn on the monitor and select the input used by the phone. A monitor set to the wrong input can look like a failed phone connection.
- Unlock the phone. If a desktop-mode prompt appears, select or allow the external-display experience.
- Use the phone’s current manufacturer instructions to choose between desktop mode, screen mirroring, or another offered display option.
- Test the mouse pointer, keyboard typing, and any required permissions. If the phone shows only charging or no signal, stop and recheck model support, cable capability, hub compatibility, and monitor input.
Samsung’s DeX menus and Motorola’s Mobile Desktop menus are not identical. Android’s desktop windowing behavior also depends on the device. The wording of the prompt and the available options therefore cannot be standardized across phones.
Desktop mode versus simple mirroring
A direct external-display connection does not always produce the same experience. The phone may offer a desktop layout with resizable windows, or it may mirror the phone’s screen. The manufacturer’s supported mode determines how practical a keyboard and mouse will be.
| Experience | Best for | Keyboard and mouse behavior | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop interface | Working with several phone apps on a monitor | Designed for pointer and keyboard input when the phone and peripherals are supported | Requires a compatible phone and the manufacturer’s desktop software |
| Phone-screen mirroring | Showing the phone screen on a larger display | Input may remain touch-oriented and can vary by app | Does not automatically provide a Windows-style desktop |
| Phone Link window on a Windows PC | Using supported phone apps while staying at the PC | PC keyboard and mouse can interact, but Microsoft warns that some apps and games may not respond | The apps remain on the phone and Phone Link availability varies by device and market |
Which route should you choose?
Choose Phone Link when the PC is your main workstation
Use Phone Link if your monitor, keyboard, and mouse are already connected to a Windows 11 computer and you want notifications, supported apps, or a phone-screen view without moving the peripherals. This avoids the phone’s need for wired video output, but it depends on Phone Link compatibility, Wi-Fi, and the app controls supported by your device.
Choose a direct connection when the phone must run independently
Use DeX, Mobile Desktop, or supported Android desktop windowing when the monitor should be driven by the phone itself. This is the appropriate route for a phone-powered desktop session, but it requires model-specific wired video support and the correct cable or adapter.

Use the compatibility checklist before purchasing accessories
- Write down the exact phone model and software version.
- Find official documentation that explicitly mentions wired external display or the relevant desktop mode.
- Check whether the phone uses USB-C-to-HDMI, a specific DeX cable, a video-capable USB 3.1 USB-C cable, or another supported path.
- Check the monitor’s available inputs and select the matching cable or adapter.
- Decide whether you need a multiport adapter for wired USB peripherals or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse support.
- Confirm whether the desired experience is a desktop interface, mirroring, or Phone Link on a Windows PC.
Troubleshooting a phone-to-monitor, keyboard, and mouse setup
The phone charges but the monitor says “No signal”
- Recheck that the exact phone model supports wired video. Charging over USB-C does not establish video support.
- Confirm that the cable or hub is rated for video. Replace a charge-only cable with the cable type listed by the phone manufacturer.
- Select the monitor input physically connected to the phone or adapter.
- Disconnect extra adapters and test the simplest supported phone-to-monitor path.
- Unlock the phone and look for the desktop-mode or external-display prompt.
The monitor shows the phone, but there is no desktop interface
The phone may support display output without offering a full desktop environment, or it may default to mirroring. Check whether the manufacturer documents DeX, Mobile Desktop, or another desktop-windowing feature for the exact model. Android desktop windowing is restricted to supported devices, so an adapter cannot add the feature to an unsupported phone.
The keyboard or mouse does not work
- For wired peripherals, verify that the multiport adapter supports USB input as well as video output.
- For Bluetooth peripherals, confirm pairing in the phone’s Bluetooth settings and check that each device has power.
- Test one peripheral at a time to identify whether the problem is the keyboard, mouse, hub, or phone.
- In Phone Link, remember that Microsoft warns some apps and games may not accept PC keyboard and mouse controls even when the Phone Link connection itself works.
Phone Link will not pair
- Confirm that the PC runs Windows 10 or Windows 11 and that the Android phone runs Android 10 or later.
- Put both devices on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open Phone Link on the PC and Link to Windows on the phone, then generate and scan a fresh QR code if the previous one expired.
- Approve the permissions requested during setup.
- Check whether the desired Apps or Phone screen feature is supported for that phone and market.
Phone Link connects, but the Apps or Phone screen option is missing
Those features are not universal. Microsoft limits Phone screen to supported Android devices and select markets, and Android app access also depends on supported devices. A successful basic pairing therefore does not guarantee that every advanced feature will appear.
Safety and reliability checks
Keep the phone unlocked only as long as needed while pairing or selecting an external-display mode, and review every permission request before approving it. Use the manufacturer’s current support page for the exact model because cable requirements, menu names, supported markets, and desktop features can change with phone software.
For a stable direct setup, connect the monitor first, select its input, then attach the keyboard and mouse and start the desktop mode. For Phone Link, keep the phone and PC on the same Wi-Fi network and leave Link to Windows enabled as required by Microsoft. If you need a dependable Windows workspace rather than a phone workspace, use the Windows PC directly and treat Phone Link as an integration feature, not as a replacement operating system.
