To connect a smart-home device to Alexa, first confirm that the exact model supports Alexa, then check the Alexa app’s Devices page in case it was connected automatically. If it is not listed, use Devices > + > Add Device, choose the device type and brand, and complete the instructions for its connection method. Matter, Zigbee, Bluetooth and third-party Wi-Fi products do not all use the same process.

Once the device appears in Alexa, create an automation from More > Routines. Choose an event that starts the routine, add one or more actions, and save it. The exact triggers and actions available depend on the device and the selections you make.

Before you begin

A successful Alexa setup depends on the exact device model, its wireless protocol and the Alexa hardware in your home. A product marked Works with Alexa has been certified to work with Alexa, but certification does not mean every Alexa device supports every function or connection method.

Confirm Alexa compatibility

  • Read the device box, product page or manual for an Alexa-compatible or Works with Alexa statement.
  • Check which capabilities the model exposes, such as power control, brightness, temperature, locking or occupancy. A supported category does not guarantee that every function is available in Alexa.
  • Identify whether the device uses Wi-Fi, Matter over Wi-Fi, Matter over Thread, Zigbee or Bluetooth.
  • Check whether an Echo with a built-in smart-home hub, a separate hub or a Thread-enabled Alexa device is required.

Prepare the account, app and network

  • Install the current Alexa app, sign in to the Amazon account used by your Alexa devices and make sure the Echo or other Alexa controller is online.
  • Power the smart-home device and keep its setup instructions nearby. Manufacturer-specific pairing steps determine how a product enters pairing mode.
  • Most smart-home Wi-Fi devices work only on 2.4 GHz bands. A Matter Wi-Fi device and its compatible Matter controller must use the same 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
  • For short-range setup methods, place the product close to the Alexa hub or Echo. Amazon gives a proximity guideline of within 30 ft (9 m) for several Matter, Zigbee and Bluetooth setup paths.

Check whether Alexa already connected it

Open the Alexa app and select Devices before starting a manual pairing process. Amazon’s Frustration-Free Setup can connect some compatible products automatically when they are powered on near an eligible Alexa device and the required account or network information is available.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Charcoal

If the device appears in the device list, open it and test the controls or a voice command. You do not need to add it again. If setup later reports No new devices found but the product is visible in Devices, it may already have connected through Frustration-Free Setup.

Use the standard Alexa app setup

This is the normal route for a compatible device that is not already listed.

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Select Devices.
  3. Tap the + icon.
  4. Choose Add Device.
  5. Select the device type, then select the brand.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions. The app may ask you to install or open a manufacturer app, enter a pairing code, scan a QR code or put the device into pairing mode.
  7. When setup finishes, return to Devices and verify that the device is listed and responds to its available controls.

Do not choose a generic device type just because it looks similar. The brand-specific flow supplies the instructions and account linking that Alexa needs for that product.

Choose the right connection path

The protocol determines whether you need a manufacturer app, a skill, a hub, a code or a particular Alexa device. Use this comparison before troubleshooting a failed setup.

Connection method What setup normally needs Network or hub requirement Important qualification
Standard Wi-Fi Alexa app’s Add Device flow; some products also use a manufacturer app and Alexa skill Most smart-home Wi-Fi products use 2.4 GHz Non-Matter products commonly depend on account linking through a skill
Matter over Wi-Fi Matter pairing QR code or numeric code in the Alexa app Compatible Matter controller and the same 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network The Echo or Alexa device must support the needed Matter function
Matter over Thread Matter QR code or pairing code in the Alexa app Thread-enabled Alexa device online; keep the product within 30 ft (9 m) during setup Matter certification alone does not provide a Thread radio in every Echo
Zigbee Put the product in pairing mode, then ask Alexa to discover devices Echo model with a built-in Zigbee smart-home hub, or a separate Zigbee hub Amazon gives a 30 ft (9 m) placement guideline for pairing with the hub
Bluetooth Power the product, put it in pairing mode and ask Alexa to discover devices Compatible Alexa device and Bluetooth product in close range Amazon’s guidance is within 30 ft (9 m); firmware and software versions can affect discovery

Connect a third-party Wi-Fi device with its manufacturer app and skill

Some Wi-Fi devices that are not Matter certified cannot be configured entirely inside Alexa. Set them up in the manufacturer’s app first, then connect the manufacturer’s Alexa skill.

Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Glacier White
  • Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
  • Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
  • Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

Initial setup in the manufacturer app

  1. Install the app named in the product instructions.
  2. Create or sign in to the manufacturer account.
  3. Add the device in that app, connect it to the required Wi-Fi band and complete any firmware update or pairing prompts.
  4. Operate the device from the manufacturer app. This confirms that the hardware, account and network are working before Alexa is involved.

Link the Alexa skill

  1. Open the Alexa app and use the device’s Add Device flow, or open the skills area and search for the manufacturer’s skill.
  2. Enable the skill and sign in with the same manufacturer account used during device setup.
  3. Approve account linking if prompted. Some setup flows enable the skill automatically.
  4. Allow Alexa to discover devices, then check Devices for the imported product.

If the device works in its manufacturer app but not in Alexa, remove or disable the skill, add or enable it again and repeat account linking. If it fails in both apps, troubleshoot power, pairing mode, firmware and Wi-Fi before changing the Alexa skill.

Set up a Matter device

Matter devices use a standard pairing process, but the transport still matters. Matter can run over Wi-Fi or Thread, and the Alexa controller must support the transport used by the device.

Matter setup in the Alexa app

  1. Open Devices in the Alexa app.
  2. Tap +, choose Add Device, then select Matter.
  3. Confirm the device type when prompted.
  4. Scan the Matter QR code on the product or its packaging, or enter the numeric pairing code.
  5. Keep the device within 30 ft (9 m) of the compatible Alexa hub or device during pairing.
  6. Wait for Alexa to complete commissioning, then verify the device in Devices.

Matter over Wi-Fi requirements

The device and the compatible Matter controller must be on the same 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. If your router combines 2.4 GHz and other bands under one network name, follow the device maker’s instructions for selecting the correct band or temporarily connecting through 2.4 GHz.

Matter over Thread requirements

A Thread-based Matter product needs a Thread-enabled Alexa device online. An Echo that supports Alexa is not automatically a Thread border router, so check the specific model’s capabilities. If no compatible Thread-enabled Alexa device is available, Amazon suggests setting up the product through another Thread-enabled voice assistant first and then connecting it to Alexa.

What Matter categories Alexa can support

Amazon’s developer documentation lists Matter support for categories including lights and plugs, sensors, locks and window coverings, thermostats, fans, air purifiers, some appliances and robotic vacuums. Category support is not a promise that every model exposes every feature. Check the device’s advertised Matter capabilities and the Alexa hub requirements before buying or pairing it.

Connect a Zigbee device

Zigbee pairing is different from Wi-Fi and Matter because the Echo itself may provide the smart-home hub.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Look for the Zigbee logo in the product documentation and confirm that your Echo model has a built-in smart-home hub.
  2. Use the manufacturer’s instructions to put the device into pairing mode.
  3. Place it within 30 ft (9 m) of the Echo hub or another connected Zigbee device while pairing.
  4. Say, Alexa, discover my devices, or start discovery from the Alexa app.
  5. Wait for discovery to finish, then assign or control the device from Devices.

If your Echo has no Zigbee hub, use a separate Zigbee hub supported by the product. The hub then provides the bridge that the Echo cannot provide on its own.

Connect a Bluetooth device

  1. Turn on the Bluetooth product and charge it if it uses a battery.
  2. Confirm that the product supports both Bluetooth connections and Alexa control.
  3. Put the product into pairing mode according to its instructions.
  4. Keep it within 30 ft (9 m) of the Echo or other Alexa device while Alexa searches.
  5. Ask Alexa to discover devices, or use the Bluetooth discovery option in the Alexa app.
  6. If it does not appear, update the product firmware and Echo software, then repeat pairing mode and discovery.

The Add Device screen can provide device-specific instructions when the product is listed by type and brand. Bluetooth discovery is sensitive to distance and pairing state, so a product that is already connected to another controller may need to be disconnected before Alexa can find it.

Verify the connection before building automation

Open the device tile in Devices and use every control that Alexa exposes. For a smart plug, for example, turn it on and off from the app, then test the corresponding voice command. For a sensor, trigger the condition safely and confirm that Alexa receives the event. If a function is missing, the issue may be a capability limitation of that model rather than a failed pairing.

Use clear, unique names for devices so voice commands are unambiguous. If the product is imported through a skill, make sure the account linked to that skill is the account that owns the device.

Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Deep Sea Blue

Create an Alexa routine

A routine combines a starting event with one or more actions. The available events and actions depend on the devices and services connected to your Alexa account.

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Select More.
  3. Select Routines.
  4. Tap the + icon to create a routine.
  5. Select Add an event and choose what starts the routine.
  6. Configure the event’s settings, such as the selected device or any conditions offered.
  7. Select Add an action and choose one or more actions. Actions can include controls exposed by your connected smart-home devices.
  8. Configure each action, arrange them as needed and save the routine.

After saving, open the routine to check its trigger and action list. If an expected device or command is absent, that capability is not currently exposed to routines for the selected device, account or connection.

Build an occupancy routine

  1. In a new routine, choose When this happens.
  2. Select Smart Home.
  3. Choose the occupancy-capable device.
  4. Select whether detection of people or no detection of people starts the routine.
  5. Choose Add an action, configure the response and save.

Amazon states that an occupancy routine applies to one device. To use occupancy from several devices or in several rooms, create separate routines for each device or room rather than adding multiple occupancy sensors to one occupancy trigger.

Troubleshoot a device that will not connect

The device is not compatible

Recheck the exact model number, not just the product family. Confirm Alexa compatibility, the supported protocol and whether an Echo hub or manufacturer account is required. A Matter label does not by itself prove that your Echo supports the product’s Wi-Fi or Thread transport.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The device never enters pairing mode

Follow the manufacturer’s reset or pairing procedure exactly. Many products use a button hold, a power-cycle sequence or a flashing status light, but the timing is model-specific. Do not reset the hardware until you have recorded any settings you need; use the manufacturer’s reset instructions first.

  • KEEP YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE - Control compatible smart home devices. Just ask Alexa to turn on lights or touch the screen to dim. Create routines that use motion detection to turn down the thermostat as you head out or open the blinds when you walk into a room.

Alexa cannot find a Wi-Fi device

  • Verify that the device has power and that your home internet connection works.
  • Check whether the product requires 2.4 GHz. For Matter Wi-Fi, confirm that the device and Matter controller are on the same 2.4 GHz network.
  • Complete setup in the manufacturer app before enabling its Alexa skill when the product is not Matter certified.
  • Test the device in the manufacturer app. If it works there but not through Alexa, remove and add the skill again, then rediscover devices.

Matter pairing fails

  • Use the correct Matter QR code or numeric pairing code; do not substitute a Wi-Fi password or another product code.
  • Move the device within 30 ft (9 m) of the compatible Alexa hub during commissioning.
  • For Thread products, confirm that a Thread-enabled Alexa device is online. If none is available, use the alternative Thread-enabled setup path described by Amazon and the device maker.
  • Check that the Alexa app, Alexa device and smart-home product have current software.

Zigbee discovery fails

Confirm that the Echo has a built-in Zigbee hub, place the product within 30 ft (9 m), repeat the manufacturer’s pairing-mode sequence and say Alexa, discover my devices. Without a compatible Echo hub, pair through a separate Zigbee hub supported by the device.

Bluetooth discovery fails

Confirm Bluetooth and Alexa support, update firmware and Echo software, put the product back into pairing mode and move it within 30 ft (9 m). A device still connected to another controller may not be discoverable until that connection is released.

Alexa reports no new devices

Open Devices and search for the product before repeating setup. It may already be present because Frustration-Free Setup completed the connection. If it is not listed, disconnect and set up the product again according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nothing works after the basic checks

Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance includes disconnecting and setting up the device again, or resetting the Alexa and smart-home devices. Reset only after trying the less disruptive checks, and follow the product maker’s reset procedure so the hardware returns to a known pairing state.

What to check when choosing a new Alexa device

Connection convenience depends more on protocol and controller support than on the device category alone. Compare these points for the exact model:

Question Why it matters
Which protocol does it use? Wi-Fi, Matter, Zigbee and Bluetooth have different pairing flows and range considerations.
Does it need a hub? Zigbee may need an Echo with a built-in hub or a separate hub; Thread Matter needs a Thread-enabled Alexa device.
Is a manufacturer app required? Some non-Matter Wi-Fi devices must be configured in their own app before Alexa can use a skill.
Which Alexa functions are exposed? A supported category does not ensure that every sensor reading, setting or control is available in Alexa routines.
Which Wi-Fi band is required? Most smart-home Wi-Fi devices use 2.4 GHz; Matter Wi-Fi also requires the controller and device to share that 2.4 GHz network.
How close must it be during setup? Amazon’s guidance for several Matter, Zigbee and Bluetooth paths is within 30 ft (9 m) of the relevant hub or Alexa device.

Example: connect and automate a smart plug

  1. Check the plug’s model documentation for Works with Alexa support, protocol and Wi-Fi-band requirements.
  2. Plug it in and look under Devices for automatic Frustration-Free Setup.
  3. If it is absent, use Devices > + > Add Device, select the plug category and brand, and follow the pairing instructions.
  4. If the plug is a non-Matter Wi-Fi model, configure it in the manufacturer app first and then enable and link its Alexa skill.
  5. Verify that Alexa can switch the plug on and off.
  6. To automate it, use More > Routines > +, choose an event such as a schedule or another supported trigger, select Add an action, choose the plug’s power action and save.

The same decision process applies to lights, sensors, locks, thermostats and other supported categories: identify the protocol, meet the hub and network requirements, verify the exposed capabilities and only then add the routine.
