Connect the agent to a narrowly scoped tool service, not directly to your observability account. Keep the provider API credential in a trusted proxy or secrets manager outside the agent’s runtime, enforce identity and read-only permissions at that service, filter the telemetry before it is returned, and audit every request. This lets an agent investigate logs and traces without giving its generated code a production secret to copy, print, or exfiltrate.

The safe architecture: agent, broker, policy, then telemetry

A coding agent can only use data through the tools and network available to its execution environment. The practical pattern is therefore a four-layer boundary:

  1. Coding-agent runtime: the model can request an operation such as searching error logs, but it does not receive a long-lived observability credential.
  2. MCP server or application-side tool broker: a controlled service validates the request, authenticates to the observability platform, and exposes only approved operations.
  3. Identity and data-access policy: the broker applies a user or service identity, resource permissions, read/write separation, query restrictions, redaction, and approval rules.
  4. Observability platform: logs, traces, metrics, and events remain behind the platform’s normal authorization controls.

The broker returns a filtered result or summary to the agent. It should never put the provider secret in the agent’s files, prompt, environment variables, generated code, or ordinary tool output. This is a reference architecture rather than a requirement of every product, but it follows the security behavior documented by OpenAI and the permission model documented for Datadog’s MCP Server.

Why a credential in the agent environment is unsafe

OpenAI’s sandbox security documentation states: “Agent-generated code can access the files, credentials, and network available to its environment.” That means a secret is not protected merely because the model was told not to reveal it. Code written during an investigation can read environment variables, configuration files, mounted volumes, process arguments, or network responses, then include the value in a file, log line, prompt-visible error, or outbound request.

A secrets manager helps only when the secret remains outside the runtime that executes agent-generated code. If your launcher retrieves a production key and injects it into that runtime, the agent’s effective access still includes the key. OpenAI recommends keeping third-party credentials outside the environment and using a proxy or server to supply secrets outside the agent process. Function tools follow the same principle: the application handling the function call holds the credential and returns only the result.

Choose where the MCP connection runs

Decide the network location before writing firewall rules or choosing an authentication flow. OpenAI distinguishes executor MCPs, which connect from the customer’s environment, from remote MCPs, which connect from the service’s infrastructure. The OpenAI Agents SDK documentation makes this distinction explicit; an individual coding-agent client may support only some connection modes.

Local or private executor connection

A local or private MCP server is usually the safer starting point when your application must own egress, filtering, approvals, or access to an internal observability endpoint. The agent reaches a tool endpoint in a controlled network, while that endpoint reaches the provider. You can apply private DNS, firewall rules, workload identity, and internal logging without exposing the telemetry service to a public callback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hosted or remote MCP connection

A hosted MCP can be appropriate for a public service when its trust model, data residency, client support, and enterprise controls meet your requirements. Verify which party makes the outbound connection, where returned log content is processed, and which organization owns the audit record. Do not assume that a remote connection can reach private production endpoints or that it uses the same IP range as a local executor.

Create a separate identity with the minimum telemetry access

Use a dedicated service identity for the broker or MCP server instead of a personal administrator account. Give it only the resources and actions required for diagnosis. If the agent needs to inspect one service’s error logs, it should not automatically gain access to every team’s audit stream, customer export, or configuration API.

User identity versus service identity

A user-based design can preserve the investigator’s existing permissions and make each request attributable to that person. A service-account design is easier to run unattended but requires careful ownership, rotation, and mapping from an approved human or workflow to the service call. Record both identities when the platform supports it.

Datadog permission layers

Datadog’s MCP documentation says its server forwards the authenticated user’s credentials and cannot grant access beyond that user’s existing Datadog permissions. Its setup guidance calls for an API key and application key scoped to a service account with only the required permissions. MCP calls also require MCP-level permissions and the underlying product or resource permissions. Treat those as separate checks: granting a tool name does not replace authorization to the logs, traces, monitors, or other resource it accesses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with read-only diagnosis

Expose search and retrieval before mutation. Incident diagnosis normally needs log queries, trace lookup, monitor state, deployment metadata, and perhaps a bounded time-series query. It rarely needs changing monitors, deleting data, editing dashboards, or triggering a deployment.

Keep read and write capabilities in different toolsets and, ideally, different identities. Datadog distinguishes mcp_read from mcp_write and requires the relevant resource permission as well. Its documentation says a read-only user’s call to a write-enabled tool is rejected, and its code-execution toolset is described as permitting only read-only Datadog API calls. If a future workflow needs a change, require a separate approval and an explicit, human-visible write operation rather than silently expanding the diagnostic token.

Implement the broker step by step

  1. List the investigations you want to support. Write concrete operations such as “find HTTP 500 errors for service checkout in the last 15 minutes” or “retrieve the trace identified by this request ID.” Avoid a generic arbitrary-API tool.
  2. Define an input schema. Require service, environment, time window, query language, and maximum result size where applicable. Reject unbounded time ranges, unrestricted wildcard searches, and attempts to pass raw provider credentials as arguments.
  3. Register a dedicated identity. Store the API key, application key, or equivalent credential in a trusted secret store accessible only to the broker. Set an owner, rotation schedule, expiry policy, and emergency-revocation path.
  4. Authenticate the caller. Require the coding agent or its gateway to present an identity that the broker can map to a user, project, or approved automation. Do not treat a model-supplied username as authentication.
  5. Authorize each operation. Check the caller’s allowed tool, target service, environment, time range, and data classification. Apply the observability platform’s own RBAC and resource permissions as a second enforcement layer.
  6. Execute outside the agent process. The broker uses the provider credential in its own process, makes the API call, and discards the credential from memory and output paths as soon as practical.
  7. Filter the response. Return only fields needed for the investigation. Remove authorization headers, cookies, tokens, passwords, session identifiers, personal data, and high-volume payloads. Truncate or aggregate results when raw content is unnecessary.
  8. Return bounded results. Enforce a maximum number of records, byte size, and execution time. Include timestamps, source identifiers, and query metadata so the agent can reason about scope without receiving the entire event stream.
  9. Require approval for exceptional access. A request for production customer content, a wider time range, or a write-capable operation should pause for an explicit approval recorded with the request.
  10. Test the boundary. Attempt to read environment variables, local configuration, process arguments, and unrelated network destinations from generated code. Confirm that none contains the provider secret and that denied queries fail closed.

Limit what telemetry leaves the observability system

Credential protection and data protection are different controls. Even when the provider key never reaches the model, logs may contain customer names, email addresses, request bodies, access tokens, database statements, or proprietary source fragments. Decide which fields may be sent to the model and whether your model-processing arrangement permits that data.

Use narrow toolsets

Expose a small set of purpose-built tools, for example:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • search_error_events with a fixed service allowlist and a bounded time range.
  • get_trace_summary that returns spans, durations, and status codes but omits sensitive attributes by default.
  • get_deployment_events limited to approved environments and recent time windows.
  • read_monitor_state without any update or notification action.

A narrow interface is easier to review than a tool that forwards arbitrary observability API paths or query strings.

Apply filtering, redaction, and access-control queries

Datadog documents RBAC, Data Access Control, and log restriction queries as ways to scope what its MCP Server can return. Use equivalent controls in another platform when available. Redact at the broker or data source, not only in a prompt instruction. Review code-execution results when underlying logs can contain customer data; Datadog specifically calls out that risk in its documentation.

Restrict network paths and egress

Allow the broker to reach only the MCP and observability endpoints it requires. Deny arbitrary outbound connections from the agent runtime, including direct access to the provider API. If the runtime needs package downloads or source control, make those destinations explicit and separate from telemetry access.

Network policy depends on connection location. A local executor produces traffic from your controlled workload; a remote MCP produces traffic from the service provider’s infrastructure. Confirm that path before configuring IP rules. Datadog documents an IP allowlist for limiting which origins may reach its MCP Server. Use private connectivity or an outbound proxy where your platform supports it, and monitor denied egress attempts as security signals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make every request auditable

Retain enough context to reconstruct who requested what, under which approval, and what data was returned. A useful audit record includes:

  • human, service, and agent identities;
  • tool name and normalized arguments;
  • target resource, environment, and time window;
  • authorization and approval decisions;
  • result size, redaction status, and an integrity identifier;
  • network destination and outcome; and
  • errors, retries, and latency.

Never write the provider secret to these records. Datadog says MCP calls appear in Audit Trail with MCP metadata, including the tool, arguments, user identity, and client. OpenAI describes OpenTelemetry export for prompt, approval, tool, MCP, and proxy events. Export those events to a protected system and set retention according to the sensitivity of the telemetry.

Datadog MCP Server as a concrete example

For a team already using Datadog, its MCP Server demonstrates the permissioned-tool approach. Datadog announced general availability on March 9, 2026. The documentation describes agent access to observability tools while preserving the authenticated user’s existing permissions; setup guidance covers MCP permissions, product permissions, toolsets, and network allowlisting.

Use it as an implementation example, not as proof that one service fits every stack. Confirm current client support, regional availability, data-handling terms, and the exact permissions required for the tools you enable. Compare connection options with these criteria

Criterion Questions to answer
Identity Is access tied to the human investigator, a service account, or both? Can the audit trail link them?
Permission granularity Can you scope by service, environment, resource, query, and time range?
Read/write separation Are diagnostic tools read-only, with writes disabled or separately approved?
Data filtering Can you redact fields, restrict log queries, cap result size, and remove sensitive attributes?
Connection location Does traffic originate in your network or from a remote service?
Credential storage Does the provider secret remain in a broker or vault outside the agent runtime?
Network controls Can you restrict egress, use private routes, or apply an IP allowlist?
Audit detail Are tool, arguments, identities, approvals, results, and failures recorded without secrets?
Model data handling What sensitive log content can reach the model, and where is it processed or retained?

Official documentation supports these comparison axes, but it does not provide a neutral multi-vendor scorecard. Evaluate each candidate against your own threat model and regulatory requirements.

Common failure modes and fixes

“The key is in an environment variable, but the prompt says not to use it”

Why it fails: generated code can read the variable. Fix: remove the key from the agent environment and move the API call into the broker.

“We gave the agent an admin account so every query works”

Why it fails: one prompt injection or mistaken tool call can expose unrelated data or perform a destructive action. Fix: create a dedicated identity with read-only, resource-level permissions and a small toolset.

“The broker filters prompts but returns raw log lines”

Why it fails: sensitive values are in the data, not the instruction. Fix: redact at the source or broker, cap output, and review representative responses for secrets and personal data.

“The firewall allows the provider, but calls still fail”

Why it fails: the connection may originate from a remote MCP service rather than your executor. Fix: identify the actual network origin, then update allowlists and egress rules accordingly.

“A read-only user can still invoke a write tool”

Why it fails: tool exposure and underlying resource authorization are separate controls, or the client is using a broader identity than expected. Fix: disable write tools, verify both MCP-level and resource-level permissions, and test a denied write call before production use.

Pre-production checklist

  • The agent runtime contains no long-lived observability credential.
  • The broker or MCP server owns authentication to the telemetry platform.
  • A separate identity has only the required resources and read permissions.
  • Tool inputs enforce service, environment, time, size, and query limits.
  • Logs and traces are filtered or redacted before model access.
  • Agent egress cannot bypass the broker to reach the provider directly.
  • Local and remote connection paths are documented and allowlisted.
  • Write operations are disabled or protected by a separate approval workflow.
  • Audit records capture identities, tools, arguments, approvals, outcomes, and redaction without storing secrets.
  • Security tests confirm that generated code cannot discover credentials or exfiltrate returned data through an unapproved destination.

When this pattern is the right fit

Use a permissioned MCP server or application-side broker when an agent needs live production context for diagnosis but must not become a production operator. Keep the boundary narrow, keep credentials outside the runtime, and treat returned telemetry as sensitive data. The result is useful observability access with a clearly defined identity, network path, data scope, and audit trail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI coding agent connect directly to a production observability API?

It can technically do so, but direct access places the provider credential and unrestricted API responses in the agent’s execution boundary. A broker or MCP server that holds the credential and exposes narrow, read-only tools is safer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does putting the API key in a secrets manager make direct agent access safe?

Only if the key remains outside the agent runtime. Injecting the retrieved secret into an environment variable, file, or process argument makes it accessible to agent-generated code.

Should I use a user token or a service account?

Use a user identity when investigator attribution and existing permissions are important; use a service account for controlled automation. In either case, apply least privilege and record the relationship between the human request and the service call.

How can I prevent sensitive customer data in logs from reaching the model?

Apply data-access restrictions and redaction before the result is returned, expose summary-oriented tools, cap result size, and review representative responses for tokens, personal data, request bodies, and other secrets.

What should be tested before enabling production access?

Test credential discovery, direct-provider egress, unbounded queries, denied write calls, oversized results, redaction failures, and audit completeness using the same runtime and identities that will operate in production.
