The reliable way to connect a wireless controller is to identify the exact controller and target device, put both into the correct pairing mode, select the controller in the device’s Bluetooth or accessory settings, and then test it in the game you intend to play. The button sequence is model-specific: an Xbox controller’s Pair button procedure does not apply to a DualSense, DualShock 4, Nintendo Switch controller, or another brand.

Bluetooth is the usual cable-free route, but some controllers also use a proprietary wireless system or require an adapter. A USB cable that carries data—not merely power—is the practical fallback when both the controller and device support wired play.

Before you start: identify the controller and the device

Look at the label, packaging, or the controller maker’s support page and write down the exact model. Similar-looking controllers can have different wireless radios, connector types, supported operating systems, and feature support. Also identify the target precisely: a Windows 11 PC, a Mac, an iPhone, an Android phone, an Apple TV, a Nintendo Switch, or another console may require different steps.

Check these items before opening settings:

  • Wireless method: Bluetooth, a proprietary wireless protocol, or both.
  • Power: charge the controller or install charged batteries.
  • Pairing control: find the model’s Pair, Sync, or wireless button. A controller that is switched on is not necessarily in pairing mode.
  • Wired option: confirm the connector on the controller and obtain a USB cable that supports data and charging.
  • Game support: verify that the game or app accepts that controller and operating system. A successful connection does not guarantee that every game, button, rumble effect, light, or headset feature will work.

Keep the controller close to the device during the first pairing attempt and temporarily disconnect it from any other device that may reconnect automatically.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Choose the connection method

Use this comparison to decide where to start. The best method depends on the controller, the target device, and the game—not on the word “wireless” on the box.

Method What you need Typical use Important limitation
Bluetooth A controller and target device that both support Bluetooth Phones, tablets, Macs, Apple TV, many Windows PCs and consoles Pairing and supported features vary by model, operating system, and app
Xbox Wireless A compatible Xbox controller and a PC or console that supports Xbox Wireless; a PC may need a compatible adapter Xbox consoles and supported Windows PCs It is separate from ordinary Bluetooth; a PC without the required hardware cannot use this method
USB data cable A cable with the correct connector that carries data and power Initial setup, computers without Bluetooth, charging, or troubleshooting A charge-only cable will not create a data connection, and not every controller supports wired play on every device
Console-specific wireless pairing The controller and the console’s supported pairing process Nintendo Switch and other consoles with their own menus or sync procedures Console pairing instructions do not prove that the same controller works identically on a PC or phone

For a Windows PC with Bluetooth, try Bluetooth first. If the computer lacks Bluetooth, a compatible Bluetooth adapter may be necessary, but verify compatibility for the particular controller and adapter combination before buying one. For a controller that supports USB, a matching data cable is a useful fallback regardless of whether Bluetooth is available.

Connect a wireless controller to a Windows PC

Pair an Xbox Wireless Controller over Bluetooth

Microsoft documents Bluetooth, Xbox Wireless, and USB connections for Xbox Wireless Controllers on Windows. For Bluetooth pairing:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn on the controller.
  2. Press and hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox logo begins flashing. Flashing indicates pairing mode; simply seeing the logo lit does not.
  3. On the PC, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices in Windows 11. Turn Bluetooth on, choose Add device, select Bluetooth, and select the controller when it appears.
  4. Wait for Windows to report that the controller is connected. If Windows asks for a code, use the prompt’s instructions rather than guessing.
  5. Open the game’s controller settings or a controller test screen and check the sticks, triggers, buttons, and any feature you need.

The Xbox button sequence is not universal. Do not use it for another controller unless that controller’s maker explicitly specifies the same procedure.

Use Xbox Wireless instead of Bluetooth

Some Windows PCs and Xbox controllers support Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless protocol. It is not the same as Bluetooth. If the PC has compatible Xbox Wireless hardware, follow the controller and PC instructions to pair through that system. If it does not, use Bluetooth or a USB data cable instead. A generic Bluetooth setting cannot substitute for Xbox Wireless hardware.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Connect by USB

  1. Choose a cable that matches the controller’s port and carries data as well as power.
  2. Connect the cable directly to a USB port on the PC, avoiding an unpowered hub while troubleshooting.
  3. Turn on the controller if Windows does not detect it automatically.
  4. Wait for Windows to install or recognize the device, then test it in the game.

If the controller only charges and never appears in Windows, the cable may be power-only, the port may be damaged, or the controller may not support wired data on that platform.

DualShock 4 on Windows

PlayStation lists a compatible Micro-USB cable or the DualShock 4 USB wireless adaptor for Windows PC. Use the controller’s documented pairing sequence for Bluetooth or the listed wired or adaptor method. Even when Windows sees the controller, an individual game may require its own controller support or configuration.

DualSense on Windows

DualSense can connect to supported Windows PCs by USB-C cable or Bluetooth. Follow the DualSense-specific pairing instructions, then verify the game’s support. PlayStation cautions that controller support varies by PC game, so a connected DualSense may not expose every control or feature in every title.

Connect a controller to an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, or Apple Vision Pro

Apple supports compatible Xbox, PlayStation, and other Bluetooth controllers on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro. The menu names are generally consistent, but the exact controller support depends on the model and operating-system version.

  1. Put the controller into its model-specific pairing mode. Do not stop at turning it on.
  2. Open the Apple device’s Settings > Bluetooth screen (on a Mac, open Bluetooth settings from System Settings).
  3. Turn Bluetooth on and select the controller when it appears under available devices.
  4. Accept any pairing prompt and wait for the controller to show as connected.
  5. Launch the game or app and check its controller settings. Some apps expose a button-mapping screen; others use their own defaults.

Some controllers can pair automatically when plugged directly into an Apple device with a USB cable that supports both data and charging. This is different from connecting the cable to a wall charger. If the controller only charges, try another known data cable and confirm that the controller model supports wired connection to that Apple device.

Apple notes that support for specific buttons and features—such as a controller’s audio jack or lights—varies by controller and app. A Bluetooth connection therefore proves only that the basic link was established; it does not promise headset audio, lighting, rumble, motion controls, or every button in every app.

Connect a controller to an Android phone or tablet

Android support is controller- and device-dependent. DualSense, for example, can connect to supported Android devices by USB-C cable or Bluetooth, while DualShock 4 support depends on the operating system and the model’s documented compatibility.

  1. Charge the controller and disconnect it from a previously paired device.
  2. Use the controller maker’s exact button combination to enter pairing mode.
  3. Open the Android device’s Bluetooth settings, enable Bluetooth, and select the controller from the available-device list.
  4. Complete pairing, then open the game’s control settings and test every control you need.

For a wired connection, use a USB cable and, where necessary, a phone adapter that supports data rather than charging only. Android versions, phone hardware, game engines, and controller firmware can change which buttons or features are recognized. If the phone pairs but a game ignores input, check the game’s supported-controller list before assuming the pairing failed.

Pair a controller with a Nintendo Switch

Nintendo’s pairing guidance covers wireless pairing and a physical-connection route for first-time pairing. Use the instructions for the exact Switch model and controller; the console menu and controller procedure are not interchangeable with PC or phone instructions.

  1. Open the Switch controller-management area identified in Nintendo’s pairing instructions.
  2. Put the controller into its documented sync or pairing mode.
  3. Select the controller on the console when it appears, then wait for the player indicator to confirm registration.
  4. If wireless pairing does not complete, use the supported physical-connection route for the first pairing, then try wireless again.
  5. Start a game and check that the console assigns the controller to the intended player.

A controller that pairs with a Switch is not automatically guaranteed to work the same way on Windows, Android, or another console. Verify the controller maker’s platform list separately.

How to verify that pairing actually works

Bluetooth settings showing “Connected” are only the first checkpoint. Use a short, repeatable test:

  1. Press every face button and directional input once.
  2. Move both sticks through their full range and squeeze each trigger gradually.
  3. Check whether the game identifies the correct button prompts or lets you select a controller layout.
  4. Test vibration, motion controls, headset audio, or lighting only if those features matter to you.
  5. Confirm that another nearby controller has not taken player one or been assigned to the game instead.

If the operating system responds but the game does not, the connection is probably working and the remaining issue is game support, a disabled input setting, or a feature limitation.

Troubleshoot a controller that will not pair

1. Recheck the exact model

Read the model number and compare it with the target device’s supported-controller list. Two controllers with nearly identical names may use different wireless standards or connectors. This check also reveals whether a requested feature—such as a headset jack or rumble—is supported on that operating system.

2. Enter pairing mode again

Turn the controller off, turn it back on, and hold the correct Pair, Sync, or wireless button until the model’s indicator shows pairing mode. A steady light usually means the controller is on or already connected, not discoverable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Remove stale pairings

In the target device’s Bluetooth settings, remove an old entry for the controller, then repeat pairing. Also turn off Bluetooth on a nearby phone, tablet, or console that may be reclaiming the controller immediately.

Apply even pressure for a few seconds to allow the suction cup to adhere properly. To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

4. Improve power and distance

Charge the controller, keep it close to the target device, and temporarily move away from other wireless accessories. A low battery can interrupt discovery or cause a connection that drops under load.

5. Switch to a data-capable USB connection

Use the correct connector and a cable known to carry data. Try a different USB port and connect directly to the computer or console. If the device still sees only charging, the cable, port, or controller may not support data on that platform.

6. Separate connection problems from game problems

Test the controller in the operating system’s input screen or another known-compatible game. If it works there but not in one title, read that game’s controller requirements and settings. DualSense support, in particular, varies by PC game, and Apple says button and accessory support varies by app and controller.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Use the manufacturer’s platform instructions

When Bluetooth and USB both fail, consult the controller maker’s support page for firmware, reset, and platform-specific steps. Do not apply a reset or firmware procedure from a different model simply because the controllers look similar.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every wireless controller uses Bluetooth: Xbox Wireless and other proprietary systems may need different hardware.
  • Using a charge-only cable: power does not prove that data can travel between the controller and device.
  • Pairing without checking the game: operating-system recognition and in-game support are separate questions.
  • Choosing a cable before identifying the port: connector types differ across controllers, including within the same product family.
  • Expecting all features everywhere: audio, lights, rumble, motion input, and button mappings can vary by operating system and app.
  • Following the wrong model’s button sequence: pairing instructions are not universal, even among controllers made for the same console family.

What to keep as a dependable fallback

A compatible USB data cable is the most broadly useful physical accessory in this setup: it can provide a wired route, help with first-time pairing where supported, and distinguish a wireless problem from a controller or game problem. Buy or reuse one only after checking the controller’s connector and confirming that the cable carries data.

For a desktop PC without Bluetooth, a Bluetooth adapter can add a wireless option, but compatibility must be checked for the specific controller, adapter, Windows version, and desired features. There is no universal adapter that guarantees every controller and game will behave identically.

Final checklist

  • Exact controller model identified
  • Target platform and operating-system version identified
  • Controller charged and disconnected from unwanted devices
  • Correct model-specific pairing mode activated
  • Controller selected in the target device’s Bluetooth or accessory settings
  • Data-capable USB cable available if wireless pairing fails
  • Game or app support confirmed
  • Buttons, sticks, triggers, and required extras tested in the intended game
