Connect a Windows laptop to a monitor with a matching video connection—usually HDMI or DisplayPort—or use a compatible adapter or dock. Then press Windows + P and choose Extend for a separate workspace or Duplicate to mirror your laptop screen. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee video output: the laptop port, cable, and dock or adapter must support compatible display features.
1. Check the laptop and monitor connections
Look at the ports on both devices before choosing a cable or dock. If the laptop and monitor have matching HDMI or DisplayPort ports, a direct connection is usually the simplest setup. VGA and DVI are also video connections found on some computers and monitors.
If you plan to use USB-C, check the laptop manufacturer’s specifications for video output, such as DisplayPort Alternate Mode. USB-C describes the connector shape, not a guarantee that the port carries a display signal. The USB-C cable and the monitor or adapter must support a compatible video mode as well; some laptops require a particular port or cable.
2. Connect the monitor directly or through a dock
Direct cable connection
- Connect a cable that matches the laptop’s video output and the monitor’s input. If the connectors differ, use an adapter that supports the laptop’s video output and the monitor’s input.
- Turn on the monitor and select the input connected to the laptop if it does not switch automatically.
Connection through a dock
- Connect the dock to the laptop using the dock’s host or upstream connection.
- Connect the monitor to a video output on the dock, such as HDMI or DisplayPort, and select that input on the monitor if needed.
- Check the documentation for the exact laptop and dock. Verify that the laptop connection supports the dock’s required video and data features, and that the dock output supports the monitor configuration you intend to use.
Do not assume every port on a dock has the same capabilities. Microsoft notes, for example, that one USB-C port on its Audio Dock supports display output while another USB-C port does not. Check the labels and documentation for your specific dock.

3. Choose how Windows uses the screen
- Press Windows + P to open Windows’ projection choices.
- Select Extend to use the monitor as additional desktop space, or Duplicate to show the same image on both screens.
- To arrange the screens or adjust available display options, open Settings > System > Display. Arrange the display diagrams to match how the screens sit on your desk.
If the monitor stays blank, check that it is using the correct input before changing display settings.
4. Set up two monitors and understand the limits
Whether a laptop can drive one or more external monitors—and at what resolution and refresh rate—depends on the laptop’s graphics hardware and ports, the dock, and the complete connection path. Check the specifications for the exact laptop and dock for the number of supported displays and the supported resolution and refresh rate at that display count. Do not infer those limits from the connector type or from another laptop model.

A basic HDMI splitter duplicates one video signal; it does not create separate extended desktops. For independent displays, use a laptop and dock combination documented to support multiple monitors.

5. Choose an adapter or dock that fits the setup
For one monitor, a direct HDMI or DisplayPort cable is the simplest option when both devices have matching ports. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter may work when the laptop’s USB-C port supports video output and the adapter supports the matching mode. A dock can add monitor outputs and connect peripherals, but its display capabilities depend on the exact laptop, dock, and connection.

Before choosing a dock, compare these specifications for your intended setup:
- Laptop compatibility: Does the laptop support the dock’s required USB-C DisplayPort Alternate Mode, USB4, or Thunderbolt connection?
- Display outputs: Does the dock have the output type your monitor accepts, and does it support the number of monitors you plan to connect?
- Display performance: Does the dock support the needed resolution and refresh rate for that number of screens?
- Power delivery: Does the dock provide laptop charging, and is that supported for your laptop?
- Other connections: Does it have the peripheral or network ports you need?
Confirm the details in the documentation for the exact laptop and dock models. A port that looks like USB-C, or a dock advertised with multiple video outputs, is not by itself proof of a particular display configuration or charging support.

6. Troubleshoot a monitor that is blank or not detected
Windows does not show the monitor
- Press Windows + P and choose Extend.
- Check that the monitor is on and set to the input connected to the laptop or dock.
- Unplug and reconnect both ends of the video cable.
- Try a known-good cable or another available laptop video output, if possible.
- Test the monitor with another system, or test the laptop with another monitor, to help isolate which part of the setup is causing the problem.
USB-C shows a limited-functionality warning or no picture
Check the laptop specifications to confirm that the USB-C port supports video output and identify any required mode. Confirm that the cable and the connected monitor or adapter support the same video features. If you are using a video adapter, it must be connected to a video-capable USB-C port.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDock peripherals work, but the monitor does not
Check which dock port supports video; two ports with the same USB-C connector may have different capabilities. Also verify that the laptop’s connection to the dock supports the video protocol the dock requires. To isolate the cause, try connecting the monitor directly to the laptop if the laptop has a suitable output.

A second monitor mirrors instead of extending
Press Windows + P and choose Extend. If the screens still do not operate independently, check the laptop’s supported display count and the dock’s supported configuration. A splitter that duplicates a signal cannot provide a second independent desktop.
The picture works, but resolution or refresh rate is lower than expected
Check the specifications for every part of the connection path: laptop, dock or adapter, cable, and monitor. A limit in any one of them can constrain the available display settings. Manufacturer figures for a particular dock apply to the stated model and connection configuration; they should not be generalized to other docks or laptops.
