The safest design starts by matching access to the work. Use Windows OpenSSH for shell commands, automation, and file transfer; use Remote Desktop (RDP) for a full graphical session; and use Remote Desktop Services (RDS) or virtual desktops when several developers, contractors, or partners need controlled, concurrent access. None of these protocols is secure by itself. You must also control network exposure, identities, device health, permissions, privileged actions, and monitoring.

This guide lays out a practical architecture for a Windows workstation that may hold source code, model files, datasets, credentials, or links to deployment systems. Confirm which of those assets actually exist in your environment before choosing controls.

Choose the access pattern before opening a port

Start with the minimum capability a developer needs. Giving a graphical desktop to someone who only needs a build shell increases the reachable attack surface; forcing an interactive AI application through a shell creates an unusable workflow.

Need Best-fit pattern What it provides Important limits
Shell commands, scripts, automation, or secure file transfer Windows OpenSSH Encrypted SSH sessions between a client and the Windows host; command-line and SFTP-style workflows Requires careful account and key management; does not provide a Windows graphical desktop
One developer needs Windows applications, GPU tools, or a complete desktop RDP to an approved host Interactive access to applications, files, and network resources Incoming RDP opens a listening port; Windows Home cannot host incoming RDP
Several developers, partners, or application-only users RDS, published RemoteApps, or virtual desktops behind a managed gateway Centralized brokering, session controls, auditing, and the option to publish a full desktop or individual applications More infrastructure: gateways, certificates, capacity planning, profile storage, and monitoring

Compare candidates on shell versus GUI requirements, concurrent-user count, required network reach, account and identity system, where code and data must remain, MFA and device-policy support, audit requirements, GPU and latency needs, and the team’s ability to maintain gateways and endpoints. Microsoft describes session-based RDS, pooled virtual desktop infrastructure, personal virtual desktops, and hybrid models; the right choice depends on density, isolation, persistence, and administrative capacity.

Design the trust boundary

Think of a remote session as a path through several trust decisions: who the user is, whether the device is acceptable, which network route is allowed, what the account may do, and which resources the session can reach. Encryption protects traffic in transit, but it does not answer those authorization questions.

Keep the workstation off the public internet

Microsoft notes that enabling Remote Desktop opens a port and recommends enabling it only on trusted networks. Do not expose a workstation’s RDP or SSH listener to every internet address. Put external users on an organization-approved path such as a VPN, a hardened jump host, or an RDS deployment with an RD Gateway. Your security team should decide the perimeter design, source restrictions, and logging requirements.

For OpenSSH, Windows creates or verifies the OpenSSH-Server-In-TCP inbound firewall rule for TCP port 22. That rule is a local prerequisite, not a justification for global exposure. Restrict the rule to approved network profiles, source ranges, or an intermediary, and limit which users or groups may authenticate.

Treat intermediaries as production security components

A VPN concentrator, jump server, RD Gateway, or virtual-desktop broker becomes part of the trusted computing boundary. Microsoft warns that such intermediaries are high-value targets because they provide connectivity or process sensitive credentials. Patch them quickly, harden their configurations, require strong user and device checks, restrict administrator roles, protect certificates and secrets, and send authentication and connection events to your monitoring system.

Prepare Windows OpenSSH for shell access

Windows OpenSSH is supported on Windows 10 build 1809 and later and on the Windows Server versions listed in Microsoft’s documentation. Microsoft describes OpenSSH as encrypting traffic between client and server to prevent eavesdropping and connection hijacking. That encryption is only one layer of the design.

Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
  1. Confirm the host edition and ownership. Verify that the workstation is an organization-managed Windows installation, is patched, and is not simultaneously being used as an unrestricted personal computer.
  2. Install the OpenSSH Server capability. In Settings, open Apps → Optional features → View features, select OpenSSH Server, and install it. On managed systems, the equivalent PowerShell operation is Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name OpenSSH.Server~~~~0.0.1.0; validate the capability name on your Windows build before deploying at scale.
  3. Start and configure the service. Run Start-Service sshd and Set-Service -Name sshd -StartupType Automatic only after your change process approves the listener. Check status with Get-Service sshd.
  4. Inspect the firewall rule. Confirm that OpenSSH-Server-In-TCP exists and is enabled only on the intended profile and source range. If the service is disabled, disable or remove the corresponding inbound rule as well.
  5. Limit accounts. Permit named developer accounts or a dedicated security group. Do not grant shell access to all local users, and do not use a workstation-wide administrator account for ordinary development.
  6. Test from an approved network. Connect with an account that has the least privilege needed, verify the host key, run a harmless command, and confirm that unauthorized source networks and accounts are rejected. Record the result in your change or access ticket.

Choose the right SSH identity method

SSH private keys are equivalent to passwords for access decisions. Store them in a protected credential store, use a strong passphrase, prevent other users from reading the key file, and replace the key after loss or suspected exposure. Maintain an inventory so a departing developer’s key can be revoked promptly.

Microsoft documents public-key authentication for local Windows accounts and Active Directory accounts. Microsoft also states that Microsoft Entra ID accounts do not support that OpenSSH key-authentication method. If your organization uses Entra ID identities, validate the supported sign-in architecture before making SSH keys the sole authentication mechanism; a key-only design that your identity provider cannot use will lock out legitimate users or encourage unsafe workarounds.

Configure RDP for a graphical session

RDP is appropriate when a developer must interact with Windows applications, GPU tooling, model dashboards, or a desktop-based IDE. Incoming RDP hosting is supported on Windows Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions and on Windows Server. Windows Home can act as an RDP client but cannot host incoming RDP sessions.

  1. Verify the edition and licensing. Open Settings → System → About to confirm the edition. If the workstation is Windows Home, choose OpenSSH, upgrade through your organization’s approved process, or use a managed remote-desktop host instead of attempting to enable an unsupported host role.
  2. Enable Remote Desktop only through policy. Open Settings → System → Remote Desktop, turn on Remote Desktop, and document the approved users. Apply the organization’s firewall and network restrictions at the same time.
  3. Keep Network Level Authentication enabled. Microsoft says NLA adds an extra layer of security to RDP connections. Leave it enabled wherever the client and host support it; do not disable it merely to bypass a poorly configured client.
  4. Authorize specific users. Members of the local Administrators group and users explicitly allowed for remote access can connect. Use a dedicated group, remove stale memberships, and avoid granting administrator rights just to make an application run.
  5. Require strong credentials and MFA at the perimeter. Use unique, strong passwords for any account that can use RDP. For external access, place MFA and device checks at the VPN, gateway, or identity layer rather than relying on an exposed RDP listener.
  6. Test the complete path. From an approved client, verify that NLA prompts before a desktop is created, that the user can reach only intended resources, and that a disabled or unauthorized account is rejected and logged.

Microsoft’s PC guidance discusses VPN and port forwarding for external connections, but an organization should not treat either as an automatic approval. Port forwarding that sends internet traffic directly to a workstation leaves the host exposed to continual scanning and credential attacks. Prefer a controlled gateway or an organization-managed network path with source restrictions and centralized logging.

Use RDS or virtual desktops for multiple developers

A single workstation RDP session is a poor sharing model when several people need access. RDS can publish complete desktops or individual RemoteApps, while pooled or personal virtual desktops can separate users and standardize images. A hybrid design can keep sensitive data in a controlled environment while presenting only the applications a developer needs.

Yubico - YubiKey 5 NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-A or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts

RD Gateway and identity controls

Microsoft describes RD Gateway as carrying RDP over HTTPS and supporting MFA and conditional-policy controls. A common MFA arrangement uses the gateway, Network Policy Server, Microsoft Entra ID, and the NPS extension. Plan enrollment, backup authentication, conditional-access rules, and the required network flows before onboarding users. Never assume that placing RDP inside HTTPS removes the need for authorization or endpoint checks.

Capacity and user experience

Plan session capacity, profile storage, gateway placement, certificate lifecycle, and network latency. Interactive AI development may require GPU acceleration and sustained bandwidth; an architecture that is adequate for a command shell may feel unusable for a graphical model-training tool. Decide whether users need persistent personal desktops, pooled sessions, or only a published application, and test the workload under the expected number of concurrent users.

Enforce identity, device, and privilege controls

Use named identities and least privilege

Permit only named developer accounts or approved groups. Remove access when a task, contract, or engagement ends. Separate ordinary development accounts from administrative identities, and require a documented reason for every elevated permission. Restrict access to source repositories, build pipelines, secrets, databases, deployment systems, and production resources independently; access to the workstation should not imply access to all of those systems.

Add MFA and device trust

Require phishing-resistant or otherwise strong MFA where the identity platform supports it, and evaluate device compliance before allowing a session. Device checks can include enrollment, encryption, patch level, endpoint protection, and screen-lock policy. A stolen password should not be sufficient to reach the workstation from an unmanaged device.

Make privileged access temporary

For high-impact operations, use role-based permissions and just-in-time elevation where available. Microsoft’s privileged-interface guidance treats each inbound session as needing a known user, a trusted device, security-health validation, least privilege, and access at the right time, with approval when required. Log who elevated, why, for how long, and which commands or administrative changes were performed.

Separate development from secure administration

An AI workstation may contain model assets, datasets, tokens, source code, and deployment credentials. Do not assume every workstation has all of these; inventory the actual assets and rank them by impact. Keep production credentials and signing keys out of ordinary developer sessions whenever possible.

For sensitive administration, Microsoft recommends dedicated hardened secure-administration workstations or isolated environments, controlled applications and network destinations, separate administrative and productivity contexts, and hardware-backed authentication such as security keys or certificates. This pattern adds cost and reduces convenience, so reserve it for high-impact paths rather than forcing every low-risk coding task through the most restrictive workflow.

Within the development environment, allow only trusted IDE extensions and command-line tools, control who can change or approve code, and federate SaaS identities so users do not accumulate unmanaged duplicate accounts. Review scripts and extensions that can read local credentials, alter firewall rules, or reach production endpoints.

Operate, audit, and revoke continuously

  • Patch every layer: the Windows workstation, OpenSSH or RDP components, VPN, jump host, RD Gateway, virtual-desktop hosts, identity services, and endpoint-security agents.
  • Monitor authentication: collect successful and failed sign-ins, MFA outcomes, source addresses, session starts and disconnects, privilege elevations, group changes, and service or firewall changes.
  • Forward events: RDS guidance identifies Windows event logs and auditing as inputs to monitoring and SIEM workflows. Define alert thresholds for repeated failures, unusual countries or networks, impossible travel, and access outside approved hours.
  • Review access: recertify group membership, device compliance, SSH keys, certificates, gateway policies, and repository permissions on a scheduled basis and after personnel changes.
  • Test recovery: maintain a break-glass procedure that is separately protected and monitored. Verify that lost keys, revoked accounts, failed MFA devices, and unavailable gateways can be handled without leaving a permanent bypass.
  • Document data paths: know whether clipboard, drive mapping, printer redirection, USB devices, or file-transfer channels can move sensitive data out of the environment. Disable redirection features that the workflow does not require.

Troubleshoot by failure layer

The client cannot reach the host

Check the approved network route first, then DNS, the host’s listening service, and the Windows firewall rule. For SSH, confirm that the sshd service is running and that TCP port 22 is reachable only from the intended source. For RDP, verify that the host edition supports incoming sessions and that Remote Desktop is enabled. Do not solve a blocked route by opening the listener to the entire internet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Authentication fails

Confirm that the account is a member of the permitted group, is not disabled or expired, and is using the identity method supported by the host. For SSH keys, check the correct private key, its passphrase, file protection, and the matching public key. If the account is Microsoft Entra ID based, remember that Microsoft documents no support for that account type with Windows OpenSSH public-key authentication.

RDP connects but the session is unsafe or unusable

Confirm that NLA remains enabled, MFA and device policy ran at the gateway, and the user received only the required rights. For performance problems, measure latency, bandwidth, GPU availability, profile storage, and concurrent-session load rather than weakening authentication or authorization. Disable unnecessary clipboard, drive, printer, and device redirection.

A gateway or jump host becomes unavailable

Use the documented recovery path, not an emergency permanent bypass. Check gateway certificates, policy-server reachability, MFA dependencies, and capacity. After service restoration, review logs for attempted access during the outage and rotate credentials if the intermediary may have been compromised.

A practical approval checklist

  • Administrative access is separate, least-privilege, time-limited, and auditable.
  • Repositories, pipelines, secrets, databases, and production systems have independent authorization.
  • Patch, logging, SIEM, alerting, access-review, and incident-recovery procedures are assigned to owners.
  • GPU, latency, profile, and concurrency requirements have been tested for the actual developer workload.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use SSH or Remote Desktop for remote developers?

Use OpenSSH when the work is command-line based, automated, or file-transfer oriented. Use RDP when a developer needs Windows applications or a full graphical session. For several users or partners, place access behind managed RDS or virtual desktops instead of sharing one workstation session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Windows Home host incoming Remote Desktop?

No. Windows Home can connect as an RDP client, but incoming RDP hosting requires Pro, Enterprise, Education, or Windows Server.

Does Microsoft Entra ID support Windows OpenSSH public-key login?

Microsoft documents OpenSSH key authentication for local Windows and Active Directory accounts, not Microsoft Entra ID accounts. Validate another supported identity path before making SSH keys the only sign-in method.

Is a VPN enough to secure remote access?

No. A VPN or jump server becomes part of the trusted boundary and needs patching, hardening, strong identity and device checks, restricted administration, and monitoring.
