Connect a PS4-compatible wired USB headset to a console USB port, or plug in the headset’s own wireless USB adapter and follow its pairing instructions. Then open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones and choose All Audio for game audio and chat, or Chat Audio for chat only. Not every USB headset works with PS4, so check compatibility for the exact model.
Choose the right connection method
PS4 can use supported USB headsets, but a USB plug alone does not guarantee compatibility. Sony’s FAQ, published in 2013, said most USB headsets would be supported after system software update 1.50; that historical statement is not a current compatibility list for every headset. Check the headset maker’s PS4 compatibility information and setup instructions for your exact model. Sony’s PlayStation support is also a place to check official guidance.

Sony’s historical compatibility statement and Gold headset manual are available in its PlayStation support materials. A manual for a particular Sony headset does not establish compatibility for other models.

Set where PS4 audio goes
- Connect the headset using its supported method and turn it on if it is wireless.
- On the PS4, go to Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones.
- Choose All Audio to hear game and other console audio as well as chat through the headset. Choose Chat Audio if you want chat through the headset only. PlayStation support says Chat Audio is the default setting.
PS4 does not output voice chat and game audio to both the headset and TV at once under the console’s specifications. If you expect to hear the same audio on both, this is a console limitation rather than necessarily a headset fault. Some headsets have game/chat balance controls, but their availability and operation depend on the model; follow its manual.

Check that the microphone works
- Open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Adjust Microphone Level.
- Speak into the headset microphone and watch the Input Volume bar. Sony says the bar responds when the microphone is working.
- If the bar does not move, check that the correct input device is selected and the headset’s mute control is off. Consult the headset manual for where that control is and any model-specific reset procedure.
If you still cannot isolate the problem, try another headset or controller as a basic check. This can help identify whether the issue follows the headset or the console setup.
Troubleshoot a headset that is not detected or has missing audio
- No headset detected: Confirm the exact model supports PS4 and that you have connected it by the method its manufacturer specifies—direct USB or its own wireless USB adapter. Try another console USB port to isolate a possible port issue.
- Chat works, but game sound does not: Check Output to Headphones and select All Audio if you want game sound as well as chat. If the headset has game/chat balance controls, check the manual for the applicable mode and adjustment.
- Game sound works, but the microphone does not: Check the selected input device, the hardware mute switch, and the Input Volume bar in Adjust Microphone Level.
- Wireless audio drops or skips: Sony recommends removing USB 3.0 devices or using a USB extension cable to increase distance between the wireless adapter and USB devices.
- Still unsure whether the port or headset is at fault: Try a different USB port or a different headset as a basic isolation step. Do not assume an unverified USB hub or unrelated adapter is supported; compatibility depends on the headset and connection setup.
For headset-specific reset steps or controls, use the instructions for the exact model rather than applying another model’s procedure. Sony’s wireless headset support guidance includes product-specific troubleshooting.
