The correct connection depends on one question: does the turntable output PHONO-level or LINE-level audio? Connect a PHONO output to a receiver’s PHONO input. Connect a LINE output from a turntable with a built-in phono preamp to AUX, LINE, or a compatible powered-speaker input. If the turntable only outputs PHONO and the receiver has no PHONO input, place an external phono preamp between them.

Use the turntable and receiving device manuals for the exact switch names and terminals. The labels and controls vary by model.

Choose the signal path before plugging in cables

A vinyl cartridge produces a very small signal that also needs phono equalization. A phono preamp performs both jobs: it raises the signal to ordinary line level and applies the required equalization. Some turntables include that circuit; others do not.

Turntable output Receiving equipment Correct connection What to select
PHONO only Receiver with PHONO input Turntable RCA L/R to receiver PHONO L/R; connect ground leads when provided Receiver PHONO
LINE (built-in preamp enabled) Receiver without PHONO Turntable RCA L/R to AUX, LINE, CD, or another line-level input Receiver input used for the cable
PHONO only Receiver without PHONO Turntable PHONO to external phono preamp input; preamp line output to receiver AUX/LINE Receiver AUX/LINE
LINE (built-in preamp enabled) Powered speakers with a compatible analog input Turntable RCA L/R directly to the speakers, or through the specified conversion cable Speaker analog input; use its volume control
Any turntable output Passive speakers Turntable to a receiver or amplifier, then amplifier speaker outputs to the passive speakers Receiver input used for the turntable

AUX does not substitute for a phono preamp. It is a line-level input, so a standard PHONO output connected directly to AUX will usually be extremely quiet.

Identify your turntable’s output

Look for a PHONO/LINE switch

Many turntables with a built-in preamp have a rear-panel switch marked PHONO and LINE, or a setting in their controls. Set it to PHONO when using a receiver’s dedicated PHONO input. Set it to LINE when using AUX, another line input, or powered speakers. Do not assume the switch is in the right position because the turntable is new; check it before troubleshooting.

Check the labels and manual

A turntable described as having a built-in phono equalizer or preamp can normally supply LINE output when that function is enabled. A PHONO-only model needs a phono input or an external phono preamp. The Audio-Technica AT-LP3XBT manual, for example, states that its built-in phono equalizer allows connection to active speakers without a separate phono amplifier; that statement applies to that model, not automatically to every turntable. See the AT-LP3XBT User Manual.

Do not infer the output from the RCA plugs

Red and white RCA plugs only identify the right and left channels. They do not tell you whether the signal is PHONO or LINE. The output type comes from the turntable’s electronics and its selector setting.

Prepare the equipment safely

  1. Turn the receiver, amplifier, powered speakers, and turntable off, or reduce the receiving device’s volume fully.
  2. Place the turntable on a stable, level surface and keep its stylus guard in place while you handle cables.
  3. Find the left and right analog outputs on the turntable and the corresponding inputs on the receiving device.
  4. Check whether each device has a ground terminal. A ground wire is separate from the red and white audio plugs.
  5. Confirm that the supplied cable reaches without being pulled tight and that any adapter matches the actual speaker or amplifier input.

Connecting with the power off prevents a loud transient from reaching the speakers and makes it easier to verify each connection.

Connect a turntable to a receiver with a PHONO input

This is the simplest path for a turntable that outputs PHONO. The receiver supplies the phono gain and equalization.

  1. Set the turntable’s preamp selector to PHONO if it has a selector. A PHONO-only turntable has no selector to change.
  2. Insert the turntable’s white RCA plug into the receiver’s PHONO L input and the red RCA plug into PHONO R. Match the labels rather than relying only on plug color.
  3. If both units have ground terminals, attach the turntable’s ground lead to the receiver’s ground terminal and tighten it so the spade or ring cannot slip off.
  4. Connect the receiver to the speakers as specified by its manual, power on the turntable and receiver, and select PHONO.
  5. Start playback and raise the volume gradually.

Audio-Technica’s connection instructions use this PHONO-to-PHONO arrangement and recommend checking the ground connection when hum occurs. See the model-specific guidance in the AT-LP3XBT User Manual.

Connect a turntable with a built-in preamp to a receiver without PHONO

Use this path when the turntable can provide LINE output and the receiver offers AUX, LINE, CD, or another ordinary stereo input but no PHONO input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Set the turntable’s preamp selector to LINE, or enable its phono-equalizer/preamp function according to the model manual.
  2. Connect the white RCA plug to the receiver’s left input and the red plug to the right input on AUX, LINE, CD, or another input explicitly intended for line-level audio.
  3. Leave the receiver’s PHONO input unused. If it has one, a LINE signal should not be routed through it.
  4. Power on the equipment, select the input used for the cable, start the record, and increase volume slowly.

The selector matters because the same physical RCA cable can carry two different signal levels. A LINE setting into AUX is the intended combination; a PHONO setting into AUX lacks the necessary gain.

Connect a PHONO-only turntable to a receiver without PHONO

Insert an external phono preamp between the turntable and the receiver. Sony’s support guidance describes a built-in amplifier or an in-line amplifier as necessary when a receiver has no PHONO input; its general connection explanation is available at Sony: How to connect a turntable to a stereo system.

  1. Turn all equipment off or set the receiver volume to minimum.
  2. Connect the turntable’s white and red RCA outputs to the external preamp’s PHONO IN L/R inputs.
  3. Connect the turntable ground lead to the preamp’s ground terminal if both provide one.
  4. Connect the preamp’s LINE OUT L/R to the receiver’s AUX, LINE, CD, or other line-level input. Do not connect the preamp output to PHONO.
  5. Power on the preamp, receiver, and turntable. Select the receiver input used for the preamp and raise volume gradually.

The complete signal chain is cartridge → turntable PHONO output → phono preamp → line-level receiver input → amplifier → speakers. A receiver’s AUX input does not perform the first two preamp functions.

When an external preamp is unnecessary

If the turntable has a working LINE setting, use that setting directly into AUX or another line input. Adding a second phono stage in that path would process the signal twice and can produce loud, distorted audio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect a turntable directly to powered speakers

Powered (active) speakers contain their own amplifier, so a turntable can feed them directly only when the output and input are compatible. The turntable must provide LINE-level audio for this arrangement; a PHONO output is not ready to drive the speakers.

  1. Confirm that the turntable has a built-in phono preamp or another documented LINE output.
  2. Set the turntable to LINE or enable its built-in phono equalizer.
  3. Check the powered speakers for an analog input. Depending on the model, it may be RCA, 3.5 mm stereo, or another connector.
  4. Connect left to left and right to right. Use the supplied RCA-to-conversion cable only when the speaker’s documented input requires it; do not buy an adapter based on appearance alone.
  5. Verify that the speakers have a volume knob, remote, or another level control. Set it low before playback, then increase it slowly.

The AT-LP3XBT manual specifically documents direct connection to active speakers using its built-in phono equalizer. That is evidence for that turntable model, not a universal guarantee for every product; check your own manual at AT-LP3XBT User Manual.

What if the speakers have no suitable analog input?

Do not force an RCA plug into an incompatible socket. Use a receiver or amplifier with the correct input, or a properly specified conversion device that accepts the turntable’s analog output. Confirm the cable type, channel wiring, and signal level before purchasing an adapter.

Why passive speakers need a receiver or amplifier

Passive speakers have no built-in power amplifier. A turntable cannot power them directly, even if the turntable has a LINE output. Route the turntable through a receiver or integrated amplifier that both accepts the correct PHONO or LINE signal and provides speaker outputs.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

For a PHONO-only turntable, that means either a receiver with a PHONO input or an external phono preamp followed by a line input on the receiver/amplifier. For a turntable with LINE output, connect to a line-level input and let the receiver or amplifier drive the passive speakers.

Grounding, hum, and channel wiring

Ground lead and low hum

If the turntable and receiver or external preamp both have ground terminals, connect the turntable ground lead to the receiving device’s terminal. This can reduce hum. Keep the ground wire away from unnecessary cable loops and make sure the terminal is tight.

Ground behavior is model-specific. In the AT-LP3XBT instructions, Audio-Technica notes that if hum continues, removing the ground line may reduce it. Treat that as a troubleshooting instruction for that documented model, not as a universal rule. Do not remove a ground connection as your first step on every system.

Left and right channels

White normally carries left and red normally carries right. A reversed pair affects stereo placement; a loose or incompletely inserted plug can eliminate one channel. Push each plug fully into its socket and inspect both ends of the cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep signal levels consistent

Use PHONO output only with a phono input or an external phono preamp. Use LINE output with AUX, LINE, CD, or powered speakers that accept line-level analog audio. The receiving input must match the output mode selected on the turntable.

Troubleshoot the symptom you hear

Symptom Most likely cause Checks and correction
Very low volume or almost no sound PHONO output connected to AUX/LINE without a phono preamp, or a turntable with a built-in preamp left in PHONO mode For a PHONO-only turntable, add an external phono preamp. For a turntable with a built-in preamp feeding AUX, select LINE. Confirm that the receiver is on the input actually used.
Loud, harsh, or distorted sound LINE output connected to PHONO, causing phono amplification and equalization to be applied twice Move the cable to AUX/LINE or another line-level input, or change the turntable to the proper output mode. Do not use a LINE output into PHONO.
Steady hum Missing, loose, or unsuitable ground connection; occasionally a model-specific grounding interaction Turn the volume down, check the ground terminal on both devices, tighten the lead, and separate audio cables from power cables. Follow the turntable manual’s model-specific advice if hum remains.
Only the left or right channel works RCA plug not fully seated, damaged lead, or left/right connection mismatch Reconnect both ends, match white to L and red to R, and test with another known-good cable if available.
No sound from powered speakers Speakers are on the wrong input, have no volume set, or cannot accept the cable/output being used Select the speakers’ analog input, raise their volume from minimum, confirm the turntable is set to LINE, and check the speaker manual for the required connector or conversion cable.
Sound cuts out when the plug is touched Loose connector or damaged cable Power down, reseat the plug, inspect for bent or loose connectors, and replace the cable if movement still interrupts a channel.

A quick isolation test

  1. Set the receiving volume low and stop the record.
  2. Verify the selected receiver or speaker input.
  3. Confirm the turntable’s PHONO/LINE setting against the input type.
  4. Check both RCA channels and the ground lead.
  5. If an external preamp is present, verify that its input is PHONO and its output goes to a line-level receiver input.
  6. Test again at low volume. Change only one connection or setting at a time so the cause remains clear.

Use this setup checklist before buying anything

  • Output type: Is the turntable PHONO-only, or can it be switched to LINE?
  • Receiver input: Does the receiver have a dedicated PHONO input, or only AUX/LINE/CD inputs?
  • Speaker type: Are the speakers powered, or do they require an amplifier?
  • Analog compatibility: Do the powered speakers accept the turntable’s available connector directly?
  • Grounding: Do the turntable and receiving device provide ground terminals?
  • Cable: Is the supplied RCA lead long enough, intact, and compatible with the speaker input? A conversion cable is conditional, not automatically required.

These checks determine the wiring path. They do not establish that one setup will sound better than another; sound depends on the particular cartridge, phono stage, amplifier, speakers, room, and record.

Common connection mistakes to avoid

  • PHONO to AUX with no preamp: The receiver cannot provide the missing phono gain and equalization through AUX.
  • LINE to PHONO: The signal is processed twice, often creating excessive volume and distortion.
  • Direct connection to passive speakers: Passive speakers need an amplifier between them and the turntable.
  • Ignoring the turntable switch: A built-in preamp is useful only when its output mode is set correctly.
  • Buying an adapter before checking the inputs: Connector shape alone does not confirm signal-level or channel compatibility.
  • Turning the volume up to compensate for a wiring error: Correct the signal path first; excessive gain can mask the cause and may overload the next input.

Complete connection examples

Example 1: PHONO turntable and vintage receiver

Set the turntable to PHONO if a selector exists, connect white and red to the receiver’s PHONO L/R inputs, attach the ground lead, select PHONO, and raise the volume slowly. No external preamp is needed because the receiver supplies it.

Example 2: LINE-capable turntable and modern receiver with AUX

Set the turntable to LINE, connect the RCA plugs to AUX L/R, select AUX, and use the receiver’s volume control. Do not connect this LINE signal to PHONO.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example 3: PHONO-only turntable and receiver with no PHONO

Connect turntable PHONO L/R to an external preamp’s PHONO IN, connect the preamp’s LINE OUT to receiver AUX, attach the ground lead to the preamp when provided, select AUX, and adjust volume gradually.

Example 4: LINE-capable turntable and powered speakers

Set the turntable to LINE, connect its RCA outputs to the speakers’ compatible analog input, select that input, and control listening level from the speakers. If the speakers accept a different connector, use only the cable or conversion specified for that input.

Example 5: Turntable and passive speakers

Connect the turntable through the appropriate PHONO or LINE path to a receiver or amplifier, then connect the amplifier’s speaker outputs to the passive speakers. The turntable does not connect directly to the passive speaker terminals.
