Connect the Steam Machine’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on your television, select that input, and complete the on-screen SteamOS setup. For a Steam Controller, pair directly with the Steam Machine’s built-in 2.4 GHz adapter; the controller’s puck is not required. Other controllers can use Bluetooth or USB, but compatibility must be checked for the specific controller and game.
Valve lists HDMI 2.0 output with up to 4K at 120 Hz, HDR, FreeSync and CEC support. Those modes depend on the television, its selected HDMI input and the rest of the setup, and Valve cautions that specifications may change before availability.
What you need before connecting
The basic setup has three parts: the Steam Machine, a television with an available HDMI input, and an HDMI cable long enough to reach between them. The cited Valve pages do not establish that an HDMI cable is included, so check the hardware package rather than assuming one is supplied.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Steam Machine: Use its HDMI output for the television connection.
- Television: Have an open HDMI input and its remote available so you can select that input.
- HDMI cable: Choose a length that reaches without putting strain on either connector. To use a particular resolution or refresh rate, the TV input and cable arrangement must support that mode.
- Input device: A Steam Controller can use the integrated wireless adapter. A compatible controller, keyboard or mouse can instead be connected through Bluetooth or USB.
Valve describes SteamOS as the operating system on Steam Machine and positions Steam Big Picture as the TV-oriented interface. The exact first-boot screens and software version were not specified in the cited material, so follow the prompts shown by the unit you have.

Steam Machine display connections and limits
Valve’s Steam Machine product page lists the following display capabilities:
| Item | Valve-listed capability | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Video output | HDMI 2.0 | Connect the machine’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV. |
| Maximum listed mode | Up to 4K at 120 Hz | This is a listed capability, not a guarantee that every TV input, cable or game will run at that mode. |
| HDR | Supported | The TV and the selected input must also support and be configured for HDR. |
| FreeSync | Supported | Variable-refresh operation depends on the display and setup. |
| CEC | Supported | CEC behavior depends on the television’s implementation and settings. |
These are Valve’s published specifications, not independent measurements. The same page says some specifications are subject to change ahead of availability. Check the final documentation for the exact Steam Machine hardware being sold.
Connect the Steam Machine to the TV
1. Make the physical HDMI connection
- Locate the HDMI output on the Steam Machine.
- Insert one end of the HDMI cable fully into that output.
- Insert the other end into an available HDMI input on the television.
- Note the input label or number, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2. You will need to select the same input on the TV.
Valve’s Big Picture TV setup guide describes HDMI as carrying both picture and sound. A separate audio cable is therefore not part of the normal TV connection described there.
2. Select the correct TV input
- Turn on the television.
- Use the TV remote’s input, source or equivalent control.
- Select the HDMI input into which you plugged the Steam Machine.
- Turn on the Steam Machine and wait for its output to appear.
If there is no picture or sound, do not begin by changing advanced display settings. First confirm that the cable is seated at both ends and that the TV is on the exact HDMI input you used. Those two checks resolve the most basic connection errors without changing other settings.
3. Complete the on-screen SteamOS setup
When the Steam Machine displays its initial setup, follow each prompt and sign in as requested. The available material confirms that SteamOS is the machine’s operating system, but it does not document a fixed sequence of screens or a final retail software version. Menu wording can therefore differ from the instructions shown on another unit.

Keep the TV on the selected HDMI input while completing setup. If the screen disappears during setup, return to the cable and input checks before attempting any advanced display change.
Choose a controller connection
There are two practical controller paths: use a Steam Controller with the Steam Machine’s integrated wireless adapter, or connect another controller through Bluetooth or USB. The choice depends on the controller you own, how many devices you need to connect, and whether the game supports that input.
| Controller or device | Connection method | Documented points | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Controller | Direct wireless pairing through the Steam Machine’s built-in 2.4 GHz adapter | Valve says it pairs without its puck; one adapter supports up to four Steam Controllers. | Confirm that the controller is available and follow the pairing prompts shown by SteamOS. |
| Steam Controller | Bluetooth | Valve lists Bluetooth support for the controller. | Use the controller and SteamOS Bluetooth pairing controls; exact screens can depend on the software version. |
| Steam Controller | USB | Valve lists USB support. | Use a suitable USB connection and confirm the game recognizes the controller. |
| Other controller | Bluetooth or USB | Steam Machine provides Bluetooth and USB connectivity for peripherals. | Verify the exact controller model and the game’s input support. The cited Valve pages do not certify every third-party model. |
| Keyboard and mouse | Compatible wired or wireless connection | Valve identifies keyboard and mouse as an option alongside controller use. | Use them when text entry, troubleshooting or a particular game benefits from those inputs. |
Pair a Steam Controller directly with Steam Machine
Why the direct path does not need the puck
Valve’s Steam Controller page states: “Steam Controller pairs easily to Steam Machine without its puck.” In this setup, the Steam Machine’s built-in wireless adapter handles the direct pairing path. The separate puck is therefore not required for that connection.
Pairing procedure
- Turn on the Steam Machine and leave it at the SteamOS interface or the pairing prompt shown during setup.
- Turn on the Steam Controller and put it into its pairing mode using the controller’s documented controls.
- Choose the Steam Controller when SteamOS presents the available device or pairing option.
- Wait for the connection confirmation, then test navigation in the Steam interface.
- Repeat the process for additional Steam Controllers, staying within Valve’s stated limit of up to four controllers on one built-in adapter.
The supplied Valve material does not specify one universal button sequence or a fixed pairing-screen label for every SteamOS build. Use the instructions displayed by your hardware rather than relying on a sequence from a different software version.
If you have several Steam Controllers
Valve lists support for “Up to four with a single adapter!” That figure applies to Steam Controllers using the integrated adapter. It does not establish a four-device limit for every Bluetooth or USB peripheral combination, nor does it guarantee that every game will expose four-player input. Check the game’s own controller support before planning a multiplayer session.

Connect a controller over Bluetooth
Bluetooth is the alternative when you are not using the Steam Controller’s integrated-adapter path. Valve lists Bluetooth support for the Steam Controller, and Steam Machine provides Bluetooth connectivity for peripherals.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open the SteamOS Bluetooth or device-pairing controls shown on your machine.
- Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode according to that controller’s instructions.
- Select the controller when it appears in the available-device list.
- Wait for SteamOS to report a completed connection.
- Open the Steam interface and test the directional controls, buttons and triggers before launching a game.
Do not treat Bluetooth availability as a universal compatibility guarantee. The cited sources do not provide a model-by-model list of third-party controllers, nor do they establish that every game accepts every Bluetooth input layout. If a controller pairs but does not work in a particular game, check that game’s input support and its controller settings.
Connect a controller by USB
A wired USB connection avoids wireless pairing. Valve lists USB support for the Steam Controller and USB connectivity for Steam Machine peripherals.
- Insert the controller’s USB cable into the controller and a compatible USB port on the Steam Machine.
- Wait for SteamOS to recognize the device.
- Navigate through Steam Big Picture or the SteamOS interface and test the controller.
- Launch the intended game only after the basic buttons respond.
A USB connection can be useful during initial setup or troubleshooting because it removes wireless pairing from the equation. The sources do not establish a particular cable type, cable length or controller model, so use the connection specified by the controller manufacturer and confirm recognition in your SteamOS build.
Open Steam Big Picture for TV navigation
Steam Big Picture reformats Steam for television viewing and game-controller use. Valve’s Big Picture overview also identifies keyboard and mouse as an option. Open Big Picture from the Steam interface after the display and controller are working.

Use Big Picture to verify the setup
- Move through the main navigation with the connected controller.
- Open a library item and confirm that the controller responds before starting the game.
- Use a keyboard and mouse if text entry or a menu is difficult with the controller.
- If the controller works in Steam but not in one game, treat that as a game-specific support issue rather than immediately repeating the TV connection.
Big Picture changes the presentation for a TV; it does not remove the need for a game to support the controller layout you selected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set realistic 4K, 120 Hz and HDR expectations
Steam Machine’s HDMI 2.0 output is listed as supporting up to 4K at 120 Hz, HDR, FreeSync and CEC. “Up to” describes the output capability listed by Valve, not the mode every television will accept.
Check the TV input, not only the TV panel
A television can have a high-resolution panel while a particular HDMI input supports a different bandwidth or feature set. Compare the input used for Steam Machine with the TV’s documentation and settings. If a mode is unavailable, try the TV input identified as supporting the desired resolution or refresh rate before changing other settings.
HDR, FreeSync and CEC are conditional
- HDR: Requires compatible support and configuration on the TV and the connected path.
- FreeSync: Requires a display and setup that support variable refresh.
- CEC: Depends on the TV’s CEC implementation and whether its related setting is enabled.
These features are listed by Valve; the cited material does not contain independent tests or a guarantee for a particular television model.
If 4K at 120 Hz does not appear
- Confirm that the HDMI cable is fully inserted and connected to the intended TV input.
- Check the TV’s documentation for that input’s supported resolution and refresh rate.
- Confirm that the Steam Machine is connected directly to the TV input you are checking.
- Only then review display options presented by your SteamOS version.
Do not infer a hardware fault solely because a TV falls back to a lower mode. Valve’s listed maximum depends on the connected display and complete setup.

Troubleshoot the most common setup failures
No picture
- Verify the TV is powered on and set to the HDMI input used by Steam Machine.
- Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable.
- Check that the cable is connected to the Steam Machine’s HDMI output, not another port.
- If the TV has several HDMI inputs, try the one documented for the mode you want.
These checks follow the basic connection path described by Valve. The supplied material does not establish a universal recovery sequence beyond checking the cable and selected input, so avoid assuming a specific TV menu or SteamOS screen.
No sound
Because the Big Picture setup guide describes HDMI as carrying picture and sound, first check the same HDMI connection and TV input used for video. Confirm the TV’s audio output is not muted. If video works but sound does not, the issue is likely in the TV input or audio settings rather than a missing separate HDMI audio cable.
The Steam Controller will not pair directly
- Keep the controller near the Steam Machine during the first pairing attempt.
- Confirm that you are using the direct integrated-adapter path and are not waiting for a puck that this path does not require.
- Restart the pairing attempt from the SteamOS controls shown on screen.
- If direct wireless pairing remains unsuccessful, try the controller’s documented Bluetooth or USB connection, both of which Valve lists as supported.
A third-party controller pairs but does not work in a game
Pairing only proves that SteamOS can see the device. The cited sources do not certify every third-party controller or game combination. Test the controller in Steam Big Picture, then check the specific game’s input support and configuration.

Valve’s “up to four” statement applies to Steam Controllers using one integrated adapter. A game may support fewer players or require its own local-multiplayer configuration. Check the game’s documentation rather than assuming the adapter limit is also the game’s player limit.
Final connection checklist
- HDMI cable runs from Steam Machine’s HDMI output to the TV input you selected.
- The TV is on that exact input and displays SteamOS.
- Initial SteamOS prompts are complete and the requested sign-in is finished.
- The Steam Controller is paired through the built-in adapter, or the chosen controller is connected by Bluetooth or USB.
- Steam Big Picture navigation responds to the controller.
- The TV input supports the resolution, refresh rate and features you intend to use.
- Any third-party controller has been tested in the specific game you plan to play.
For the official connection descriptions and current hardware details, consult Valve’s Steam Machine page, Big Picture TV setup guide, Steam Controller page and Big Picture overview. Recheck the final hardware documentation because Valve notes that some Steam Machine specifications may change before availability.
