To connect a Solana wallet to a decentralized exchange (DEX), open the DEX’s verified official website, select Connect Wallet, choose your installed wallet, inspect the wallet prompt, and approve the connection. The DEX can then see your public address, but connecting does not automatically approve a swap or every future transaction. Each signature, token permission, and transaction requires its own review and approval.

What you need before connecting

A DEX connection uses a self-custody Solana wallet. The wallet extension or mobile app holds your keys, while the DEX supplies the trading interface and sends transaction requests to the wallet for signing. You do not need to transfer custody of your assets to the DEX merely to connect an address.

  • A supported Solana wallet: Examples include Phantom and Solflare. The wallet must be installed and unlocked on the device you are using.
  • The correct DEX address: Start from the project’s official materials or a trusted directory. Sponsored search results, copied domains, pop-up links, and unsolicited messages can lead to a counterfeit site.
  • A compatible device path: Desktop users commonly connect through a browser-wallet extension. Phantom’s documented mobile method requires Phantom’s in-app browser rather than Safari, Chrome, or another mobile browser.
  • SOL for later transactions: Connecting itself is not a network transaction and does not require a fee. When you eventually sign a swap or another on-chain action, you need enough SOL for network fees. Solflare gives 0.01 SOL as an example amount, not as a universal requirement or current fee quote.

Do not type a recovery phrase into the DEX, a wallet-connection window, an airdrop page, or a support chat. A legitimate connection request is approved inside your wallet; it does not ask the website to receive your secret recovery words.

How to connect a Solana wallet on a desktop browser

The labels and location of controls differ between DEXs, but the following sequence is the common extension-based flow. Solflare’s guide uses a DEX such as Raydium as an example; it does not establish that every exchange supports every wallet.

  1. Verify the domain before opening it. Compare the address with the DEX project’s official documentation or verified social profile. Check the spelling, top-level domain, and HTTPS connection. Bookmark the page only after you have verified it, and avoid relying on a paid search result or an unsolicited link.
  2. Unlock your wallet extension. Open the wallet you intend to use and make sure the desired Solana account is selected. Keep the wallet window available so you can inspect any request that appears.
  3. Open the DEX and find its connection control. Select Connect Wallet, Connect, or a similarly named button. It may be in the upper-right corner, near a swap form, or inside a menu on a smaller screen.
  4. Choose the wallet you installed. Select Phantom, Solflare, or another option that actually appears in the DEX’s own wallet list. Do not install a wallet solely because a random pop-up tells you to do so.
  5. Inspect the wallet approval window. Confirm the requesting site, the account or address involved, and the type of access requested. A normal connection exposes the public address to the app. If the prompt asks for a recovery phrase, private key, unexpected token spending approval, or an unrelated signature, cancel it.
  6. Approve the connection inside the wallet. Select the wallet’s connect or approve control only after confirming that you intentionally opened the verified DEX. The wallet should return you to the DEX when the connection succeeds.
  7. Check the connected address. Open the DEX’s account indicator and compare the displayed address with the account you meant to use. A shortened address is usually shown, so compare its beginning and ending characters or copy the full address from the wallet for a precise check.

At this point, the DEX can generally read public information associated with the address, such as balances needed to display a trading screen. It has not automatically received permission to move your tokens. A later swap, liquidity action, message signature, or delegation will generate a separate wallet prompt.

How to connect Phantom on a mobile phone

Phantom’s official mobile instructions specify a different path from desktop extensions: app connections work inside Phantom’s in-app browser. Opening the same DEX in Safari, Chrome, or another mobile browser is not the supported connection method described by Phantom.

  1. Open the Phantom mobile app and unlock it.
  2. Open Phantom’s search bar or in-app browser. Enter the DEX’s name or its verified URL. Check the spelling before loading the page.
  3. Open the DEX inside Phantom. Do not switch to an external browser when the page asks to connect.
  4. Tap the DEX’s connection control. It may say Connect Wallet or simply Connect.
  5. Select Phantom from the wallet choices presented by the DEX.
  6. Review the connection details in Phantom, including the site and account. Tap Connect only if the request matches the DEX you deliberately opened.
  7. Handle a message-signing prompt if it appears. Phantom notes that a sign-message request may be needed to finish the connection. Read the message and cancel if it is confusing or asks for an unexpected permission.

If you change accounts in Phantom after connecting, Phantom says the app is disconnected and must be connected again with the newly selected account. This prevents you from assuming that a DEX is using the account you just switched to when it is still associated with a prior session.

What “connect wallet” actually permits

Phantom describes the result this way: “When you connect Phantom to an app (dApp) or site, the app or site can see your public address and ask you to approve actions like signing messages or submitting transactions.” The important distinction is between being connected and approving an action.

Event What the DEX may learn or request What you still control
Wallet connection Your selected public address and public blockchain data needed to populate the interface Whether to approve the connection and whether to keep the session connected
Message signature A cryptographic signature proving that the wallet approved a particular message Whether to sign; a message should be understandable before approval
Swap or other transaction A serialized Solana transaction describing instructions, accounts, fees, and asset movements Whether to sign and submit that specific transaction
Token delegation or spending approval Permission that may allow a program or account to spend specified tokens later without asking for a new approval each time Whether to grant the delegation and whether to revoke it later when supported

In Solana’s signing model, the wallet remains with the end user and a transaction executes only when valid signatures from all required signers are supplied. That does not make every request harmless: a user can still authorize a malicious signature, a dangerous delegation, or an irreversible transfer. Solflare warns that Solana transactions cannot be reversed, so the decisive safety step is refusing an unwanted or unclear signature.

How to approve a swap safely

After the connection, choose the token pair and amount in the DEX as usual, then treat the wallet prompt as a security review rather than a routine confirmation.

  1. Check the asset direction. Confirm which token you are sending and which token you expect to receive. Be suspicious if the wallet preview shows an asset or account you did not select.
  2. Review the fee information. Check the network fee and any DEX or routing fee shown by the interface or wallet. The amount can change when the transaction is rebuilt, so inspect the final prompt rather than relying on an earlier quote.
  3. Inspect the called programs and accounts. Solflare says its transaction prompt can show called contracts, moved assets, fees, and potentially risky permissions, and may simulate the transaction. Read those details where available.
  4. Look for a delegation or approval instruction. A request that grants future spending authority is different from a one-time swap. Decline it or investigate its scope if you do not understand which token, amount, spender, or duration it covers.
  5. Approve only the intended transaction. Sign inside the wallet after the asset movement and permissions make sense. If the request changes unexpectedly, cancel and rebuild the trade from the verified DEX page.
  6. Wait for confirmation and verify the result. Check the wallet balance and the DEX’s transaction status. If the interface reports a failure, do not repeatedly approve prompts without determining whether the prior transaction actually landed.

Wallet simulations and warning systems are useful but not exhaustive. Solflare explicitly cautions that automated checks cannot detect every malicious transaction. Your own review of the destination, assets, and permissions remains necessary.

Connection safety checklist

  • Verify the DEX domain through official project materials before entering any wallet session.
  • Use the official wallet download or app-store listing, and keep the wallet software updated through its normal channel.
  • Never disclose a recovery phrase or private key to a DEX, wallet-support agent, giveaway page, or airdrop form.
  • Stop when a prompt requests an unfamiliar message, a broad token delegation, an unexpected account, or an asset you do not recognize.
  • For an unfamiliar dApp, consider a separate burner wallet with its own recovery phrase and only a small amount of funds. Do not reuse the recovery phrase from your main wallet.
  • Do not assume that a connection badge proves a site is genuine. Confirm the domain every time you return through a link.
  • Remember that disconnecting a site and revoking token spending approvals are different actions. Disconnecting ends the wallet session; it may not remove a previously granted token allowance.

How to disconnect a DEX and review spending approvals

When you are finished, use the wallet or DEX control labeled Disconnect or Disconnect all. The exact location varies by wallet and version. Disconnecting prevents the site from continuing to use the current connection session, but review any permissions you granted during trading.

Solflare documents spending-approval controls under Settings → Security and Privacy → Spending Approvals. Menu names can change, so use the current security or approvals section in your wallet. Review the spender, token, and allowance, and revoke an approval that is no longer needed. If your wallet does not offer an equivalent control, consult its current official documentation rather than entering a recovery phrase into a third-party “revoke” page.

Choosing a Solana wallet for DEX access

No single wallet is established as universally safest, cheapest, or best by the available documentation. Choose based on the connection method you need, how you want to approve signatures, and whether you need hardware-key support.

Decision factor Browser-extension use Mobile use Hardware-backed use
Connection method Connect from the DEX in the same desktop browser where the wallet extension is installed. For Phantom, open the DEX in Phantom’s in-app browser; external mobile browsers are not the documented path. Use the compatible wallet application and confirm that the selected DEX and hardware integration support the required signing flow.
Custody and signing The user keeps custody and approves prompts in the extension. The user keeps custody and approves prompts in the mobile wallet. Private-key operations are performed through the hardware device, while the companion wallet still displays transactions and requests.
Best fit Frequent desktop trading and easier side-by-side review of wallet prompts. Occasional mobile access when the wallet’s in-app browser supports the DEX. Users who want an additional offline key-storage layer and accept extra setup and compatibility checks.
Important limitation The extension can still be tricked if you approve a malicious transaction. Changing accounts can disconnect the DEX and require a new connection. Hardware protection does not make a malicious transaction safe to sign, and compatibility can vary by wallet, device, and DEX.

Solana’s wallet directory, updated September 2, 2026, lists wallet and hardware-wallet options for informational purposes. Directory inclusion is not an endorsement, and it does not prove that a particular wallet, hardware device, and DEX combination will support every feature. Confirm current compatibility before buying hardware or moving funds.

Optional security upgrade: a Solana-compatible hardware wallet

A hardware wallet is not required to connect to a DEX. It can be useful for a larger balance because signing keys are kept on a dedicated device instead of only in a browser or phone. The trade-off is a more involved approval process and the need to verify compatibility among the hardware device, wallet software, network, and DEX.

  • Confirm current Solana support in the wallet’s official documentation.
  • Confirm that the wallet software can connect to the specific DEX and transaction type you intend to use.
  • Buy only through a trustworthy channel and initialize the device yourself.
  • Write the recovery phrase down offline according to the manufacturer’s instructions; never photograph it or enter it on a website.
  • Read the transaction details on the wallet display when available, not only the browser preview.

Solana’s directory documents hardware-wallet integrations, including Solflare Shield, but the available information does not establish compatibility for a particular device model with every wallet and DEX. Check the current support matrix before making a model-specific purchase.

Troubleshooting common connection problems

The wallet does not appear in the DEX menu

Confirm that the wallet extension or app is installed, unlocked, and supports the Solana network. Refresh the verified DEX page after unlocking the wallet, and check whether the DEX has a separate “more wallets” menu. If the wallet still is not listed, do not install an unknown substitute offered by a pop-up; use a wallet that the DEX explicitly supports or consult the DEX’s official documentation.

The connect button does nothing

Check that the page is open in the correct browser context. A desktop extension normally requires the extension’s browser; Phantom mobile requires the DEX to be open inside Phantom’s in-app browser. Temporarily close duplicate wallet extensions that compete to handle the same request, reload the verified page, and try again. Never solve a connection error by entering your recovery phrase.

Phantom mobile keeps opening an external browser

Return to Phantom and use its own search bar or in-app browser to enter the DEX name or verified URL. Phantom states that Safari, Chrome, and other mobile browsers are unsupported for this mobile connection path. If you changed accounts, reconnect from the DEX page because the account switch disconnects the prior session.

The DEX shows the wrong address

Open the wallet, select the intended account, and reconnect. Compare the complete address rather than relying only on an account nickname. If the DEX continues to show the wrong account, disconnect the site, close stale tabs, and start a new session from the verified domain.

A transaction fails or remains pending

First check the wallet and a Solana block explorer using the transaction signature, if one was generated, before submitting another transaction. Confirm that the wallet has enough SOL for the network fee and that the token balance and account are correct. A failed transaction does not justify approving a new prompt whose contents you have not inspected. If the DEX asks for a new delegation or a different set of instructions, cancel and investigate.

The wallet displays a risky permission

Cancel unless you understand the spender, token, allowance, and purpose. A token delegation can permit later spending without a separate approval for each transfer. Use the wallet’s spending-approval controls to review and revoke an allowance when appropriate, then revisit the DEX only through its verified domain.

Frequently overlooked details

Connecting does not mean the DEX can spend everything

A connection exposes the public address and enables future prompts; it is not blanket authorization. Spending authority comes from a transaction or permission that you explicitly sign. That distinction is why every later wallet prompt deserves a fresh review.

A public address is safe to share, but it is not private

The DEX needs the public address to display balances and prepare transactions. Anyone who sees it can inspect its public blockchain history. Do not confuse the address with the recovery phrase or private key, which must remain secret.

A small SOL balance is for signing activity, not for the connection screen

You can usually connect before funding the wallet. You need SOL when the wallet must submit a transaction and pay the network fee. The 0.01 SOL example in Solflare’s guidance is a practical illustration, not a guaranteed amount for every trade, account, or network condition.

A repeatable routine for every DEX session

  1. Start from a verified DEX domain and check it again if you return through a search result or message.
  2. Open the wallet in the correct desktop extension or mobile in-app browser.
  3. Connect only the account you intend to use, then compare the displayed public address.
  4. Read every message, swap, approval, and delegation prompt separately.
  5. Cancel anything that is unclear, unexpectedly broad, or inconsistent with the trade you entered.
  6. After trading, disconnect the site and review lingering token approvals when your wallet provides that control.
