To connect a smart kettle, first identify its exact model, install the manufacturer’s app, and put the kettle into its model-specific pairing mode. The setup is not universal: the Morphy Richards Halo 1.5L Alexa Kettle is added through the Alexa app, while a Swan Alexa Kettle is connected in the Swan app before its Alexa skill is enabled. Both cited examples require 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi. Some app-connected kettles, including Xiaomi’s Mi Smart Kettle, use Bluetooth instead and cannot be operated remotely over the internet.

Why the exact kettle model matters

“Smart kettle” can describe several different connection methods. A kettle may use Wi‑Fi for remote access, Bluetooth for short-range phone communication, or a manufacturer app that later connects to a voice assistant. The button sequence, network band, account setup and supported controls all depend on the model.

Start by reading the name printed on the kettle, base or packaging. Use that full model name when finding the manual or setup page. Do not substitute instructions for a similar-looking kettle: the SET button, indicator lights and app flow described for one model may not exist on another.

Swan Alexa Kettle Wi‑Fi Swan app, then Alexa skill 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi Flashing Wi‑Fi light while in pairing mode
Xiaomi Mi Smart Kettle Bluetooth Mi app Bluetooth rather than Wi‑Fi Pairing details are model-specific

The Xiaomi UK Mi Smart Kettle FAQ specifically says that its phone connection is Bluetooth, not Wi‑Fi, and that remote operation like a Wi‑Fi kettle is unavailable. Its app can display the current temperature and customize keep-warm settings, but those functions do not turn the kettle into an internet-controlled appliance.

Prepare the kettle, phone and network

Complete these checks before opening the pairing screen. They prevent most setup failures without changing router settings unnecessarily.

  • Identify the model: write down the complete model name and capacity, then use the maker’s manual or support instructions for that model.
  • Install the named app: use the manufacturer’s app when the instructions call for one. Have the required account credentials ready.
  • Prepare Wi‑Fi details: know the exact network name and password. For the Morphy Richards Halo and Swan examples, the phone must use a compatible 2.4 GHz network.
  • Power the kettle: plug the base into mains power and switch the kettle on as the model’s instructions direct.
  • Keep the phone nearby: pairing requires the app to communicate with the kettle while it is powered and displaying its pairing indicator.
  • Stay near the router during setup: Morphy Richards identifies weak signal as a possible cause of setup failure and advises keeping the Halo reasonably close to the router while pairing.

For the Halo 1.5L model, Morphy Richards lists a smartphone or tablet with the Alexa app, an Amazon account, compatible 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi, the network password and mains power as requirements. Those requirements describe that model; they are not a universal specification for every smart kettle.

Connect a Morphy Richards Halo Alexa Kettle

Morphy Richards provides two Alexa setup routes: QR-code setup and manual setup. Use whichever option appears in your Alexa app.

Use QR-code setup when it is available

  1. Plug in and power on the Halo kettle.
  2. Open the Alexa app on the prepared smartphone or tablet and start adding a device.
  3. Choose the QR setup option and scan the code supplied with the kettle or its setup material.
  4. When Alexa asks for network details, select the compatible 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi network and enter its password exactly.
  5. Leave the kettle powered while Alexa searches. Finish only after the kettle appears in the Alexa app’s device list.

The QR route is simply an alternate entry point; it does not remove the need for the kettle to be powered, within signal range and ready to pair.

Use Alexa’s manual device path

If scanning is unavailable, Morphy Richards’ manual guide uses this exact sequence:

  1. Open Alexa and select Devices.
  2. Tap the + button.
  3. Select Add Device.
  4. Choose Kettle.
  5. Select Morphy Richards.
  6. When Alexa asks for a code, choose Don’t have a code? and continue with the manual setup guide.
  7. Put the kettle into pairing mode when prompted.
  8. Select the correct 2.4 GHz network and enter its password.
  9. Wait for discovery to finish, then confirm that the kettle is listed under Devices.

Put the Halo into pairing mode

The manual pairing procedure is model-specific. Hold the SET control until all LEDs flash three times and the kettle beeps three times. That combination is the Halo’s indication that it is ready to pair. If you do not see and hear that sequence, do not continue entering network details; return to the kettle controls and repeat the model’s pairing instruction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Morphy Richards also advises entering the Wi‑Fi password accurately, including its capitalization. Its Halo guidance warns that unusual characters or symbols in the network name or password may cause problems for this model. Treat that as a Halo-specific troubleshooting note, not a rule that applies to every router or kettle.

Connect a Swan Alexa Kettle

Swan’s process is maker-app-first. Alexa is linked after the kettle has joined Wi‑Fi in the Swan app.

  1. Plug in the kettle and power it on.
  2. Open the Swan app and begin adding the kettle.
  3. Connect the kettle to the home’s 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi network, entering the network password when requested.
  4. Wait for the Swan app to show that the kettle is online or successfully added.
  5. Open Alexa and enable the Swan Kettle skill.
  6. Sign in with the Swan account associated with the kettle.
  7. Run Alexa’s device discovery so the kettle is added to the Alexa device list.

During Swan setup, a flashing Wi‑Fi light indicates pairing mode. If Alexa cannot find the kettle, Swan’s support instructions say to check that indicator first, then verify the 2.4 GHz network, the enabled Swan Kettle skill, the account used to sign in and the discovery step.

Control the kettle from your phone

The manufacturer’s app is the first place to test control. Open the app, select the kettle and check whether it reports an online or connected state. The available controls depend on the model; an app may expose temperature information or keep-warm settings without supporting internet-based operation.

Alexa and the maker app are related but separate layers. Amazon’s smart-home guidance says that non-Matter Wi‑Fi devices should normally be set up in the manufacturer’s app before they are connected to Alexa. For the Swan example, that means Swan app setup, account sign-in, skill enablement and discovery. For the Halo example, the Alexa app is the documented setup route.

When the maker app controls the kettle but Alexa does not, the network connection is probably working and the remaining issue is the assistant integration. Amazon recommends checking the relevant third-party skill and reactivating it when necessary, then running discovery again. Do not reset a correctly working kettle before checking that account-and-skill link.

When neither app can control the kettle, return to pairing mode, network band, password and signal checks before troubleshooting Alexa. Voice control cannot repair a kettle that never completed its underlying app connection.

Troubleshoot in the right order

Change one thing at a time and retry pairing after each check. This sequence follows the failure points identified in the Morphy Richards, Swan and Amazon support instructions.

1. Confirm power and pairing mode

  • Make sure the base is plugged into mains power and the kettle is switched on.
  • Look for the model’s pairing indicator before starting discovery.
  • For the Halo manual procedure, hold SET until you get three flashes of all LEDs and three beeps.
  • For the Swan kettle, look for the flashing Wi‑Fi light.

If the indicator never appears, the app cannot discover the kettle reliably. Exit the setup screen, put the kettle back into its documented pairing mode and try again.

2. Verify the required Wi‑Fi band

The cited Halo and Swan Alexa instructions specify 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi. A router that combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one network name can make setup confusing. Check the model’s own guidance for the correct way to select or expose the required band rather than assuming that a particular router change will work for every kettle.

A Bluetooth model such as the Mi Smart Kettle is a different case: changing Wi‑Fi settings will not give it Wi‑Fi remote control because its phone link is Bluetooth.

3. Re-enter the network credentials

Type the network name and password again, paying attention to upper- and lower-case characters. Morphy Richards specifically calls for accurate password entry and notes that unusual symbols in the Halo network name or password may interfere with setup. Confirm that you selected the intended household network, not a guest network or a neighboring signal with a similar name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Improve signal during the initial connection

Move the kettle closer to the router while pairing. Morphy Richards lists weak signal as a possible reason the Halo setup fails. Once the kettle has joined the network, return it to its normal position and test the app there. If it only works near the router, the placement or local network coverage remains the issue.

5. Test the manufacturer’s app before Alexa

Open the maker app and check its device status. If it can operate the kettle but Alexa cannot, inspect the account used for the skill, reactivate the skill if needed and run device discovery again. If the maker app also fails, continue with pairing, band, password and signal checks instead of repeatedly searching in Alexa.

6. Use Swan’s additional recovery steps

For a Swan kettle, check the app’s online status, the Swan Kettle skill and the Swan account link. Swan’s support also recommends restarting the kettle and router as further troubleshooting. If those steps do not restore the connection, reset the kettle and reconnect it through the Swan app, following the model’s reset instructions.

Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth and “app control” are not the same

An app icon on a product page does not prove that a kettle can be started or monitored remotely over the internet. The connection type determines what the phone can do and how far away it can be.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Wi‑Fi kettle: the kettle joins the home network. A compatible app may be able to reach it through that network, and a voice assistant can be added when the maker supports the required account and skill flow.
  • Bluetooth kettle: the phone pairs directly over Bluetooth. Control is local and model-dependent; it is not equivalent to internet-based remote access.
  • App with limited functions: an app may show temperature or configure keep-warm behavior without offering remote boiling or operation outside Bluetooth range.

Xiaomi’s Mi Smart Kettle FAQ is explicit about this distinction: the model pairs with the phone over Bluetooth, supports real-time temperature display and customizable keep-warm settings, and cannot be operated remotely in the manner of a Wi‑Fi kettle. Apply those statements to that Mi model only; verify the connection method for any other kettle by its own manual.

What to compare before buying a connected kettle

If remote phone control is the reason for buying, compare the connection and recovery details—not just whether a product is described as “smart.” These are the practical differences documented by the three examples:

Question Why it matters What the examples show
Is the connection Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth? Determines whether the phone can reach the kettle beyond local Bluetooth range. Halo and Swan examples use Wi‑Fi; the Mi Smart Kettle uses Bluetooth.
Which app starts setup? Installing the wrong app can prevent discovery. Halo setup is documented in Alexa; Swan starts in the Swan app; the Mi model uses its Mi app.
Which Wi‑Fi band is required? A phone on an incompatible band may not complete pairing. The Halo and Swan instructions specify 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi.
How is pairing confirmed? You need a visible or audible sign that discovery can begin. Halo: three LED flashes and three beeps after SET; Swan: flashing Wi‑Fi light.
Is voice-assistant linking separate? App control can work even when voice control is not linked. Swan requires the Swan Kettle skill, Swan account sign-in and Alexa discovery after app setup.
What happens if the connection fails? Clear recovery steps reduce unnecessary resets. Check power and pairing, band, credentials and signal; then check app status and skill/account linking.

A quick decision path

  1. You know the model and it specifies Wi‑Fi: install the maker-named app, select the required band, put the kettle into pairing mode and follow the model’s exact discovery steps.
  2. The model specifies Alexa setup: use the Alexa device path and confirm the kettle appears in Devices before trying voice commands.
  3. The model specifies a maker app before Alexa: finish the maker-app connection first, then enable the skill, sign in and discover the device.
  4. The model specifies Bluetooth: pair in the manufacturer’s app and expect local phone control rather than Wi‑Fi remote operation.
  5. Pairing fails: check power and the indicator, verify the 2.4 GHz requirement where documented, re-enter credentials, improve signal, then test the maker app before repairing the Alexa link.

Key limits to keep in mind

There is no single setup sequence that applies to every smart kettle. The three documented examples differ in connection technology, first app, network requirement and assistant integration. Use the exact model instructions for controls such as SET, reset combinations and indicator meanings.

Likewise, successful app pairing and successful Alexa discovery are separate outcomes. A kettle can be online in its maker app while the voice-assistant skill or account link still needs attention. Conversely, repeatedly searching Alexa will not fix a kettle that has not joined Wi‑Fi or is actually a Bluetooth-only model.
