On a compatible Samsung stove or range, “AP” is a SmartThings connection setup indicator. If it appears while you are pairing the appliance, it is an expected part of setup—not, on its own, evidence of a fault. The exact steps depend on the model, so check its manual if the controls differ.

What does AP mean on a Samsung stove?

Samsung’s range setup instructions use “AP” to indicate that a compatible range is ready to be added to SmartThings. To enter this state, the instructions say to press and hold the range’s Smart Control button until AP appears. Samsung’s range firmware instructions describe this as a connection-preparation step.

That context matters: AP appearing during pairing is not, by itself, a repair diagnosis. Samsung’s setup guidance identifies it with SmartThings setup, rather than treating it as an error code. Do not assume that the display needs a control-board replacement or service just because AP appears during this process.

How to connect a compatible range to SmartThings

  1. Check the model. Find the model number and consult its user manual to confirm that it supports Smart Control or SmartThings and to see the model-specific instructions. Not every Samsung range has a Smart Control button.
  2. Start in the app. Open SmartThings, choose to add a device, select a Samsung Range, and follow the on-screen prompts. Samsung’s range connection guide describes this flow.
  3. Put the range into setup mode when prompted. On models with the relevant control, touch and hold Smart Control until AP appears. Follow your manual if it specifies a different sequence; do not assume every model uses the same hold time.
  4. Complete registration in SmartThings. Keep the phone near the range and enter the home network credentials as prompted.

If AP disappears or pairing stalls

If AP mode turns off before registration finishes, Samsung’s appliance registration guidance recommends restarting the setup flow in SmartThings. Samsung Malaysia’s registration troubleshooting page covers this situation.

If the app still cannot connect, check the setup and network basics before treating the display as a hardware problem:

  • Confirm that the range model supports the feature and that you are following its manual.
  • Check that the SmartThings app is following the correct device-registration steps and that the network password is entered accurately.
  • Check Wi-Fi signal strength near the range and whether Wi-Fi is enabled for the appliance, if applicable.
  • Consult the manual for your model’s network requirements. Samsung says requirements vary by device; do not assume that every range requires a particular router band.

Samsung’s SmartThings connection troubleshooting guide lists credentials, network and device requirements, Wi-Fi signal, and appliance Wi-Fi settings among the checks to consider. If setup repeatedly fails, contact Samsung support with the model number and the step where registration stops.

Two meanings not to confuse

AP on the appliance display during SmartThings setup is different from “/AP” at the end of some regional model numbers. For example, Samsung’s NX60A6115SS/AP support page identifies a model and its market-specific support materials; that suffix is not the same thing as the AP setup indicator shown on a display. A manual for one model family or market should not be treated as instructions for every Samsung range.
