The quickest way to connect a Samsung Galaxy tablet to a TV is to choose between three methods: Smart View for wireless screen mirroring, wireless Samsung DeX for a desktop-style interface, or a USB-C-to-HDMI connection for a direct wired link. Smart View and wireless DeX need a compatible TV or display; HDMI also requires a Galaxy tablet whose USB-C port supports video output. The connector shape alone does not prove HDMI compatibility.

Use the instructions below to select the right method, connect it, and fix the most common failures without buying an adapter your tablet cannot use.

Choose the connection that matches what you want to do

Method Best for What you need Important limits
Smart View Showing the tablet’s screen wirelessly Smart View on the tablet, a compatible TV or display, and both devices on the same Wi-Fi network Miracast support is required; DRM-protected video may not mirror
Wireless DeX Using a desktop-style Samsung DeX workspace on a TV or monitor A DeX-compatible Galaxy tablet and a TV, smart monitor or other Miracast display that supports wireless DeX Not every Galaxy tablet or TV supports DeX; menus vary by model and software version
Wired HDMI/DeX A direct connection when you want to avoid wireless discovery An HDMI-output-capable tablet, a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or DeX cable, and an open HDMI input on the TV Several Tab FE and Lite models listed by Samsung do not support HDMI output

Samsung’s instructions and compatibility details are collected in its screen-mirroring guide, Smart View troubleshooting guide, and DeX support guide. Samsung does not publish a quantified comparison of latency, picture quality or reliability for these methods, so the practical differences are about interface, compatibility and convenience rather than a guaranteed speed ranking.

Check compatibility before you start

Confirm the tablet feature you intend to use

  • For Smart View, look for Smart View in Quick Settings. Samsung states that “Smart View is not available on every device.” Its troubleshooting guidance describes Galaxy phones and tablets running Android 4.3 or later with displays supporting Miracast, but the exact feature and settings depend on the device.
  • For wireless DeX, the tablet must support DeX and the receiving TV or monitor must support wireless display technology. Samsung describes wireless DeX with 2018-and-later Samsung TVs, Samsung Smart Monitors and other Miracast-capable devices for compatible Galaxy products.
  • For HDMI, check the exact model number in Samsung’s current specifications or DeX FAQ before purchasing an adapter. USB-C is the physical connector; it does not automatically mean the port can send video.

Prepare the television

  • Turn on the TV and switch to the input you intend to use. For wireless methods, open the TV’s screen-mirroring or device-connection feature if its menus require that step.
  • For Smart View or wireless DeX, connect the tablet and TV to the same Wi-Fi network. A guest network or a router that isolates wireless clients can prevent discovery even when both devices appear to have internet access.
  • For HDMI, identify the numbered HDMI socket you will use; selecting that same number with the TV remote is essential after plugging in the cable.

Method 1: Mirror the tablet with Smart View

Smart View reproduces the tablet’s display on the TV. It is the right choice for showing photos, a presentation, compatible video, or the entire tablet interface without a cable.

  • Compatibility: Supports USB-C DP Alt mode, USB4, and Thunderbolt connections.

Connect with Quick Settings

  1. On the Galaxy tablet, swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings. Swipe again if necessary to expand all tiles.
  2. Tap Smart View. This is a built-in Quick Settings control, not an app you need to download.
  3. Wait for compatible televisions and displays to appear, then tap the TV you want to use.
  4. Approve the request on the TV. If the TV presents a PIN, enter that PIN on the tablet.
  5. If the TV asks you to enable screen mirroring or select an input, follow that on-screen instruction. The tablet should then appear on the television.

Samsung’s step-by-step instructions are in its screen-mirroring support article. Keep the Quick Settings panel available: opening Smart View again lets you disconnect, change the connected display, or return to normal tablet use.

Understand what Smart View can and cannot show

Smart View mirrors the tablet’s screen rather than creating a separate desktop. Anything rendered by the tablet may be visible, but a service can block protected playback. Samsung specifically says DRM-protected content cannot be mirrored. If the connection works but a film or show displays a black screen, use the service’s native TV app or another playback route that the service supports; do not treat that symptom as proof that the TV connection failed.

Compatibility with non-Samsung televisions varies. A TV may support a different wireless-display implementation, may require a setting to be turned on, or may not advertise itself to the tablet at all. Miracast support is the relevant requirement in Samsung’s troubleshooting documentation.

Method 2: Use wireless Samsung DeX

Wireless DeX is for a desktop-like workspace: windows, a taskbar and apps arranged for a larger display. It is different from Smart View because the TV shows the DeX interface instead of simply duplicating the tablet’s normal screen.

Start wireless DeX from a Galaxy tablet

  1. Open Settings on the tablet.
  2. Tap Connected devices.
  3. Tap Samsung DeX.
  4. Choose Connect wirelessly.
  5. Select the TV or smart monitor from the list.
  6. Tap Start now, then approve the request on the TV if prompted.

These labels come from Samsung’s tablet-specific DeX instructions; One UI versions and tablet models can place the controls slightly differently.

Control the DeX workspace

The tablet can act as a touchpad. A Bluetooth or USB keyboard and mouse can make text entry and window management more comfortable, and an S Pen can be used where the app supports it. Wireless DeX still depends on a compatible receiving device: Samsung cites 2018-and-later Samsung TVs, Samsung Smart Monitors and other displays that support Miracast for eligible Galaxy devices. A TV that appears for Smart View is not automatically guaranteed to support DeX.

Method 3: Connect with a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable

A wired connection avoids wireless discovery and puts the tablet’s output on a specific HDMI input. Samsung documents a DeX cable, HDMI cable or standard USB-C-to-HDMI adapter for compatible tablets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect the hardware

  1. Verify that the exact tablet model supports HDMI output. Samsung’s DeX FAQ lists Galaxy Tab S9 FE, Tab S9 FE+, Tab S10 FE, Tab S10 FE+ and Tab S10 Lite as not compatible with HDMI output.
  2. Plug the USB-C end of a compatible adapter or cable into the tablet’s USB-C port.
  3. Connect an HDMI cable from the adapter or DeX cable to an available HDMI socket on the TV. If your adapter has a built-in HDMI plug, connect it directly.
  4. Use the TV remote to select the matching HDMI input.
  5. Unlock the tablet if it asks for permission, then tap Start to allow DeX.

Samsung’s wired directions appear in its DeX guide and Galaxy tablet DeX instructions. An adapter is not a universal solution for Galaxy Tabs: the model check must happen before the purchase.

If the cable opens mirroring instead of DeX

Some setups initially show the tablet’s ordinary screen. Open the DeX notification or the DeX control in Quick Settings and switch to DeX mode. On devices using newer One UI software, Samsung’s external-display troubleshooting guidance describes choosing Extend where that option is offered. The exact control is version-sensitive; consult Samsung’s external-display troubleshooting page if the mode selector is not visible.

Disconnecting HDMI can restart DeX. Save documents and other work before unplugging the cable.

  • 5 in 1 Connectivity: The USB C Multiport Adapter is equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 100W USB C PD port, a 5 Gbps USB A data port, and two 480 Mbps USB A ports

Which method should you use?

Choose Smart View when you need a simple mirror

Select Smart View for a quick presentation, photo slideshow, compatible app or tablet demonstration when both devices can join the same Wi-Fi network. It requires no adapter, but the TV must support the relevant wireless-display feature and protected video may be blocked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose wireless DeX when you need a larger workspace

Choose wireless DeX for multitasking, document work and a desktop-style layout. It is useful when the TV or monitor supports Miracast and you want to keep the tablet’s interface separate from the large-screen workspace. A keyboard, mouse or the tablet’s touchpad can improve control.

Choose HDMI when the tablet and adapter are confirmed compatible

Choose wired HDMI when you already have a compatible adapter, the TV is nearby, or wireless discovery is not practical. The direct cable supplies a clearly selected input, but it adds hardware and remains dependent on the tablet’s video-output support.

Fix Smart View when the TV does not appear

  1. Check the network: Confirm that the tablet and TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, not merely that both have internet access.
  2. Check the TV feature: Enable screen mirroring or the TV’s wireless-display mode if required, and make sure the TV is on the expected source or device-connection screen.
  3. Check compatibility: Verify that the TV supports Miracast or the wireless-display method expected by Smart View. Smart View is not present on every Galaxy device.
  4. Restart both devices: Power-cycle the tablet and TV, then try Smart View again. Samsung lists restarting as a common remedy for Smart View discovery problems.
  5. Test the content separately: If the TV connects but one video remains blank, check for DRM protection. Try an unprotected photo or the tablet home screen to distinguish a playback restriction from a connection failure.

Samsung’s complete diagnostic sequence is in the Smart View and Screen Mirror issues guide.

Fix wireless or wired DeX problems

Wireless DeX does not find the TV

  • Confirm that the tablet is a DeX-capable model and that the TV or monitor supports wireless display or Miracast.
  • Use the Settings path Connected devices > Samsung DeX > Connect wirelessly rather than Smart View if you specifically want the DeX desktop.
  • Approve the connection request on the TV. If the display is already busy with another wireless session, end that session and search again.
  • Restart the tablet and display, then repeat discovery. Feature names and eligibility can differ by One UI version and model.

HDMI shows no picture

  1. Recheck the tablet’s exact model against Samsung’s HDMI-output information. A USB-C port without video output cannot be made HDMI-capable by changing adapters.
  2. Reseat the USB-C and HDMI plugs, then select the HDMI input that matches the socket in use.
  3. Try another compatible USB-C-to-HDMI cable or adapter and, if possible, another TV input or display. Samsung recommends checking the compatible connection and trying a different display when troubleshooting wired DeX.
  4. Unlock the tablet and accept the Start prompt. Without that approval, the display may remain inactive.

The TV mirrors the tablet but DeX will not launch

Open the DeX notification or Quick Settings control and select DeX mode. On supported newer software, use the external-display mode controls and choose Extend when available. Because this behavior depends on One UI and Android versions, the controls described by Samsung may not match every tablet’s wording.

  • ONE-WAY VIDEO & AUDIO OUTPUT: This adapter sends video and audio from your USB-C device to an HDMI display. It does not support charging, and it is not designed for HDMI-to-USB-C direction.
  • 4K@60Hz USB-C TO HDMI ADAPTER CABLE: Get clear 4K picture at 60Hz from a compatible USB-C laptop or tablet. It also works with older HDMI 1.4, 1.3 and 1.2 screens.
  • PLUG AND PLAY, NO SETUP: Turn your USB-C port into an HDMI port with no drivers and no installation. What you see depends on your device and your screen.
  • EXTEND YOUR REACH: Going from USB-C male to HDMI female lets you keep using the HDMI cable you already have, and place your laptop or phone where you want it.

Accessory and setup decisions

Buying a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter

Search for a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter only after confirming HDMI output for the exact Galaxy Tab model. Samsung documents standard adapters for DeX, but the accessory cannot add video output to models that lack it. A compatible multiport adapter may be useful if you also need additional connections, although compatibility still depends on the tablet and the adapter’s specifications.

Planning for sound and controls

For wireless methods, the TV or display handles the large-screen presentation while the tablet remains the source and controller. For DeX, pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse when you need sustained typing, or use the tablet as a touchpad for occasional navigation. For HDMI, keep the tablet accessible: changing modes, approving prompts and disconnecting safely all happen from the tablet.

Additional setup pitfalls to avoid

  • Do not confuse internet access with device discovery. Two devices can browse the web successfully while a guest network, access-point isolation or separate Wi-Fi bands prevents them from seeing each other.
  • Do not buy by connector shape alone. USB-C describes the plug, not the video capabilities behind it. Confirm the complete model designation, including FE, FE+ or Lite suffixes.
  • Do not assume Smart View and DeX are interchangeable. Smart View is a mirror; DeX is a separate desktop workspace. Select the feature that matches the result you want before troubleshooting.
  • Do not repeatedly replace hardware for a protected-video failure. If photos and the home screen display correctly but a particular movie is black, DRM is a more likely explanation than a bad HDMI cable.
  • Do not unplug during unsaved work. Samsung notes that removing HDMI can restart DeX, so save documents before changing the physical connection.

What to check after connecting

Test the tablet home screen first, then an ordinary photo or other non-protected item. This confirms that the display path is working before you troubleshoot an individual app. For DeX, open a window, move it, and verify that the tablet touchpad or paired mouse responds. If the picture is on the wrong TV source, use the remote to cycle through the numbered HDMI inputs rather than reconnecting the tablet repeatedly.

When you finish, disconnect from Smart View through its Quick Settings tile or close the DeX session from the tablet’s DeX controls. With HDMI, save your work, close sensitive content if appropriate, and then unplug the cable. If another person uses the TV, return it to the normal TV input so the next viewer is not left on an empty HDMI source.

A quick connection checklist

  • Decide whether you need a mirrored tablet screen or the DeX desktop.
  • Check the exact tablet model before relying on HDMI output.
  • For Smart View or wireless DeX, put the tablet and TV on the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Enable the TV’s required screen-mirroring or wireless-display setting.
  • For HDMI, connect the adapter first, connect HDMI, and select the matching TV input.
  • Approve the TV request or the tablet’s Start prompt.
  • If video alone fails, consider DRM restrictions before replacing working hardware.
  • Save work before unplugging an HDMI connection, because disconnecting can restart DeX.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can every Samsung Galaxy tablet connect to a TV?

No. Smart View is not available on every Galaxy device, wireless DeX requires a compatible tablet and receiving display, and HDMI requires video output through USB-C. Samsung lists Galaxy Tab S9 FE, Tab S9 FE+, Tab S10 FE, Tab S10 FE+ and Tab S10 Lite as HDMI-output-incompatible models.

Do the tablet and TV have to be on the same Wi-Fi network?

Yes for Smart View and wireless DeX in the usual setup. Put both devices on the same network, not a guest network that isolates connected clients. A wired HDMI connection does not require Wi-Fi.

Why does my TV not appear in Smart View?

Check that the TV’s screen-mirroring feature is enabled, both devices use the same Wi-Fi network, and the TV supports Miracast or a compatible wireless-display mode. Restarting the tablet and TV can also restore discovery.

Why is a streaming movie black while the tablet screen mirrors normally?

Samsung says DRM-protected content cannot be mirrored. Test the home screen or an ordinary photo; if those appear, use the streaming service’s native TV app or another playback method it supports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter work with my Galaxy Tab?

Only if the exact tablet model supports HDMI video output. USB-C alone is not proof of that capability. Confirm the model in Samsung’s specifications or DeX support information before buying an adapter.

What is the difference between Smart View and DeX?

Smart View duplicates the tablet’s normal screen. DeX presents a desktop-style workspace with windows and a taskbar on the TV or monitor. Use Smart View for simple demonstrations and DeX for multitasking or document work.

Can I use a keyboard and mouse with wireless DeX?

Yes. Samsung supports Bluetooth or USB keyboard and mouse control, and the tablet can also function as a touchpad. An S Pen may work in apps that support it.

How do I switch from mirroring to DeX over HDMI?

Open the DeX notification or Quick Settings control on the tablet and choose DeX mode. On some newer One UI versions, the external-display controls offer an Extend option. The wording varies by model and software version.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

The Bottom Line

Start by deciding whether you want a mirror or a desktop. Use Smart View for a wireless copy of the tablet screen, wireless DeX for a compatible TV-based workspace, and USB-C-to-HDMI only after confirming that your exact Galaxy Tab outputs video. Same-network setup, Miracast support, DRM limits and model-specific HDMI exclusions explain most connection failures.
