To connect a Roku TV to Wi‑Fi, choose your wireless network during Guided Setup, enter its case-sensitive password, let Roku finish its update, and link the TV to a Roku account. If the TV is already set up, use Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless to select a network again.

The labels can differ slightly by Roku TV model, Roku OS version, and region. Follow the wording shown on your screen. The steps below cover first-time setup, changing routers, missing networks, rejected passwords, hotel and dorm networks, Ethernet, mobile hotspots, and what still works without internet.

What you need before connecting

Have the Wi‑Fi network name (also called the SSID) and its password ready. The network list on the TV shows nearby wireless networks, so you must identify the one provided by your home router, apartment network, or other access point. If another phone or computer is already connected, its Wi‑Fi settings can help you confirm the exact network name. A router’s default network name may also be printed on its label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Roku passwords are case-sensitive. Uppercase and lowercase letters, spaces, numbers, and symbols must match the password stored by the router. Keep the TV remote available because the on-screen keyboard is used during setup.

Internet access is required to complete Roku activation and begin streaming. Roku says activation is free and that it does not charge a fee to create an account; see the official activation guidance if you need to link the TV.

Do not assume that every Roku TV has a wired-network socket. Ethernet and some public-network features depend on the exact hardware and product. Check the TV model and its available ports before buying a cable or relying on a particular connection method.

If you are replacing a router, write down the new SSID and password before disconnecting the old equipment. A network can have a familiar name while its password has changed, and the TV will need the new credential even if the network name looks identical. If the router uses separate wireless names, select the specific one you intend to use rather than assuming the first entry is correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the TV close enough to the router for the initial connection when possible. The setup list reflects networks the TV can detect at that moment; a weak or intermittent signal can make an expected network harder to find. Menu wording and the location of options can vary, so use the labels displayed by your TV instead of trying to force a different model’s sequence.

Connect a Roku TV during first-time setup

Use this sequence when the TV is new, has been reset, or has not yet completed Guided Setup.

  1. Start the TV and Guided Setup. Turn on the Roku TV and follow the opening prompts until the network-selection screen appears.
  2. Choose the wireless network. Select your home or other intended Wi‑Fi network from the list. The list contains nearby networks detected by the TV.
  3. Rescan if necessary. If the expected network is absent, choose Scan again. Wait for the refreshed list and select the network when it appears.
  4. Enter the password exactly. Type the Wi‑Fi password with the on-screen keyboard. If Show password appears, use it to inspect the entry before submitting it. Correct any capitalization or symbol errors.
  5. Allow the connection and update to finish. After the TV connects, Roku says it downloads the latest Roku OS updates and restarts. Do not treat the restart as a failed connection; it is part of the setup process.
  6. Complete the remaining prompts. Guided Setup continues through preferences and account linking. Follow the labels displayed on your TV rather than relying on a different model’s menu wording.
  7. Link a Roku account. Roku requires internet access and account linking before streaming starts. Activation itself is free, and Roku states that it will never charge you to create an account.

Roku’s step-by-step setup reference is the Roku TV setup guide. If the TV reaches the home screen after the update and account step, the wireless connection is established.

Give the update and restart time to complete. Interrupting power or repeatedly backing out while Roku is downloading software can leave setup unfinished. When the TV returns to its normal interface, confirm that the selected network is shown in its network information before moving on to app setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account linking is separate from choosing an SSID. A TV can be associated with a wireless signal and still need the remaining Guided Setup prompts before streaming services are available. If an activation page or account prompt appears, follow that prompt; do not pay a third party claiming that Roku activation requires a fee.

Reconnect after changing a router or Wi‑Fi network

If you replaced your router, changed the Wi‑Fi name or password, moved the TV, or want to use a different network, you can select a new connection from the Roku home screen.

  1. Press the Home button on the Roku remote.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Network.
  4. Choose Set up connection.
  5. Select Wireless.
  6. Pick the desired network from the list. Choose Scan again if it is not shown.
  7. Enter the network password, observing capitalization and punctuation.
  8. Wait for the connection confirmation, then open the TV’s network information to verify which network is active.

This path is documented in Roku’s internet connection guidance. A password change on the router means the TV must be given the new password; selecting the old saved network alone will not update the credential.

Use this menu path whenever you intentionally move between networks, not just after a router replacement. For example, it can switch from a home network to a temporary apartment network or a supported travel network. The network information screen is useful confirmation because the name displayed there tells you which connection the TV actually selected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the desired network is not listed, return to the wireless list and use Scan again rather than repeatedly entering a password for a different SSID. The password only has meaning for the network you selected.

Fix the most common connection problems

The network name is missing

First select Scan again from the network-selection screen or from Settings > Network > Set up connection. The list is limited to nearby networks that the TV can detect at that moment.

If you still cannot identify the intended entry, check a phone or computer that is already connected to the same router. Its Wi‑Fi details can reveal the exact SSID. For a router using its factory settings, inspect the router label for the default network name. If the SSID remains unknown or the network does not appear after rescanning, Roku directs you to the internet-service provider or router manufacturer for help with the network’s configuration and credentials. The official credential instructions are at Roku’s network-name and password article.

Remember that the network list is not a directory of every network in the area; it reflects networks detected by this TV. A hidden or unavailable wireless network may therefore require help from whoever manages the router. Roku’s documented next step is to confirm the name and credentials with the ISP or router manufacturer, rather than guessing at an SSID.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The password is rejected

Confirm that you selected the correct network before entering anything. Then enter the same password used by another device on that network. Wi‑Fi passwords are case-sensitive, so a single uppercase letter, number, or symbol can cause rejection.

If your model displays Show password, enable it and check the complete entry before continuing. Do not substitute the router’s administrator password for the Wi‑Fi password unless the router uses the same value. If you cannot recover the correct wireless password, Roku recommends contacting your ISP or the router manufacturer rather than guessing repeatedly.

When another device connects successfully, compare the password character by character, including spaces and punctuation. Also verify that the other device is using the same SSID you selected on the TV; many homes have more than one wireless network name. A successful connection on a different network does not confirm that the TV’s selected network has the same password.

The Roku mobile app cannot find the TV

The mobile app is a convenience for controlling a Roku device; it does not replace the TV’s initial network setup when the TV is offline. Roku says the phone and TV must be connected to the same network for discovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When both devices should be on the same network but discovery fails, check the factors identified in Roku’s mobile-app connection guidance:

  • On iOS, allow the app to access the local network when prompted in the phone’s permissions.
  • Temporarily review VPN routing, which can place the phone on a different logical network from the TV.
  • Check whether the router has device isolation or a similar guest-network setting that prevents devices from seeing one another.
  • Review the TV’s mobile-app control setting if the model exposes one.
  • Verify that the phone is not using cellular data while the TV is on home Wi‑Fi, or vice versa.

These checks address discovery after network access exists. For a brand-new TV, complete the on-screen Wi‑Fi setup first.

A guest network can provide internet while intentionally blocking communication between clients. In that situation, the TV may stream normally but remain invisible to the phone. Use the physical Roku remote for setup and control, and ask the network administrator whether device isolation can be changed only if you manage that network.

The TV connects but streaming does not start

Streaming and Roku OS updates need internet access, not merely a connection to a local wireless signal. Confirm that the selected network is the one with internet service and inspect the TV’s network information after reconnecting. If the network itself has lost internet access, the ISP or router manufacturer is the appropriate escalation point; Roku’s published setup steps do not establish one universal cause for every internet failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This distinction explains why a TV can show a connected Wi‑Fi name while apps still fail to load. The wireless link reaches the router, but the router or service may not be reaching the internet. Verify the active network first, then contact the provider or router maker if that network has no internet service.

Connect on hotel or college-dorm Wi‑Fi

Many hotels and dormitories use a captive portal: the device joins a public network, then a browser page asks you to accept terms, enter a room number, or sign in. A normal home-network password flow may not complete this process.

  1. From the Roku home screen, open Settings > Network > Set up new wireless connection.
  2. Select the hotel or dormitory’s public wireless network.
  3. When prompted, choose I am at a hotel or college dorm.
  4. Use the phone or computer instructions shown by Roku to finish the network’s authentication page.
  5. Return to the TV and wait for the connection to complete before streaming.

Roku calls this feature Hotel & Dorm Connect. The authentication session has a time limit, so restart the flow if the sign-in expires before completion. Availability can vary by Roku product, so do not assume every Roku TV supports the feature. Roku’s current instructions are at the Hotel & Dorm Connect support page.

Public networks can also restrict device-to-device communication, which may affect mobile-app discovery even after the TV has internet access. Use the remote for setup and control if the public network prevents the phone from seeing the TV.

Have the venue’s sign-in details available before starting. The phone or computer is used to complete the authentication page, while the TV follows the dedicated Hotel & Dorm Connect flow. If the portal’s time limit expires, start the process again rather than treating the expired session as a bad Wi‑Fi password.

Use Ethernet instead of Wi‑Fi when the TV supports it

A wired connection can avoid wireless signal and credential issues, but only supported Roku TVs or Roku devices have an Ethernet port. Inspect the exact model and ports before purchasing a cable; the presence of Roku software does not guarantee a wired socket.

  1. Connect an Ethernet cable between the supported TV or Roku device and an available port on the router or modem.
  2. During initial setup, choose Wired when the connection-type option appears.
  3. On an already configured device, open the network-connection settings and select the wired option if it is offered.
  4. Wait for the TV to confirm the wired connection, then check its network information.

Roku’s Canada connection instructions cover wired setup alongside wireless and hotspot methods: connect to the internet. A wired option is useful only when the cable can reach the router and the hardware exposes the required port; it is not a universal replacement for Wi‑Fi.

Ethernet changes the connection medium, not the need for internet service. The cable must reach a router or modem with active service, and the TV or Roku device must actually offer the wired option in its menus. Check both the model specifications and the physical ports before planning the installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a phone’s mobile hotspot temporarily

A mobile hotspot can provide internet when home service is unavailable or when you need to complete setup away from home. It appears to the TV as another wireless network.

  1. Turn on the hotspot feature on the phone and note its network name and password.
  2. On the Roku TV, open the wireless network list during setup or through Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless.
  3. Select the phone’s hotspot name.
  4. Enter the hotspot password exactly and complete the on-screen setup.

Roku warns that streaming and software updates can use significant mobile data. Check the carrier plan’s allowance, throttling rules, and hotspot limits before leaving the TV connected for long periods. A hotspot is therefore best treated as a temporary connection or emergency setup path, not automatically as a replacement for a home broadband plan. Roku documents this option in its internet connection guidance.

Because Roku may download operating-system updates during setup, even an initial connection can consume more data than a brief test. Monitor the phone’s hotspot usage and disconnect it when the TV no longer needs internet access. The carrier, not Roku, controls any data allowance, speed reduction, or tethering restriction on the plan.

What works without an internet connection?

After setup, Roku’s connection instructions say the TV can still be used offline for devices connected through HDMI, cable television, or over-the-air broadcasts. Streaming services, account-dependent features, and Roku OS updates need internet access.

This distinction matters if your router is down: switching to an HDMI source or antenna can restore local viewing, but it will not make streaming apps work. Once internet service returns, reconnect through Settings > Network > Set up connection if the TV does not automatically rejoin the saved network.

Offline viewing does not remove the original setup requirement. The TV must already have completed its setup and account steps before you can rely on local HDMI, cable, or antenna sources as an alternative to streaming.

Choose the right connection method

Method Availability Setup effort Main constraint
Home Wi‑Fi Usual method on Roku TVs Select SSID and enter the case-sensitive password Requires the correct network credentials and usable internet service
Ethernet Only models or Roku devices with the required port Connect cable and choose Wired Router distance, cable routing, and hardware support
Phone hotspot Available when the phone and carrier allow tethering Enable hotspot, select it, and enter its password Streaming and updates consume mobile data and may hit plan limits
Hotel or dorm connection Supported Roku products on captive-portal networks Use Hotel & Dorm Connect and authenticate with a phone or computer Portal time limits and product or network compatibility
Offline inputs HDMI, cable, and over-the-air sources after setup Select the local input or broadcast source No streaming or internet-based updates

For a permanent home installation, start with Wi‑Fi unless a supported Ethernet port and convenient cable run make wired networking preferable. Use a hotspot for a short-term connection when its data cost is acceptable. On a public network, use the dedicated hotel or dorm flow rather than treating the captive portal like a normal private password.

Availability is the first decision point: Wi‑Fi is the normal path, Ethernet depends on hardware, hotspots depend on the phone and carrier, and Hotel & Dorm Connect depends on product support and the venue’s network. Setup effort comes next, followed by the ongoing data or network restrictions. This order prevents buying a cable for a TV without an Ethernet jack or using a hotspot without checking its data allowance.

A final connection checklist

  • Identify the exact Wi‑Fi network name and password.
  • Remember that the password is case-sensitive; use Show password when available.
  • Use Scan again when the network is missing.
  • For an existing installation, go to Settings > Network > Set up connection.
  • Let Roku finish its update and restart during first-time setup.
  • Complete free account linking before expecting streaming apps to work.
  • Use the same network on the phone and TV before troubleshooting mobile-app discovery.
  • Verify model support before choosing Ethernet or Hotel & Dorm Connect.
  • Check mobile-data limits before using a hotspot.
  • Use HDMI, cable, or over-the-air sources when internet service is unavailable.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I connect my Roku TV to Wi‑Fi for the first time?

Turn on the TV and follow Guided Setup. Select the intended wireless network, choose Scan again if it is missing, enter the case-sensitive password, and let Roku download updates and restart. Finish account linking and the remaining prompts before streaming.

What is my network name and password?

The network name is the SSID shown in the TV’s wireless list. A phone or computer already connected to the router can show the exact SSID, and a factory-default name may be printed on the router label. If you cannot recover the password or identify the network, contact the ISP or router manufacturer.

Why won’t my Roku TV connect to Wi‑Fi after I changed routers?

From the Home screen, open Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless, select the new network, and enter its current password. Use Scan again if needed. A changed router password must be entered again even when the network name is unchanged.

Can the Roku mobile app set up Wi‑Fi on a disconnected TV?

No. The app is a convenience after network access exists; Roku says the phone and TV must be on the same network for discovery. For first-time setup, use the TV’s on-screen Guided Setup. If discovery later fails, check iOS local-network permission, VPN routing, router device isolation, mobile-app control settings, and whether both devices are really on the same network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I connect a Roku TV to hotel or dorm Wi‑Fi?

Open Settings > Network > Set up new wireless connection, select the public network, and choose I am at a hotel or college dorm. Complete the authentication on a phone or computer. The session can expire, so restart the flow if its time limit runs out. Not every Roku product supports this feature.

Can I use Ethernet or a phone hotspot instead of home Wi‑Fi?

Ethernet is available only on supported TVs or Roku devices with the required port; choose Wired after connecting the cable. A phone hotspot appears as a wireless network, but Roku warns that streaming and updates can use significant mobile data. Check the carrier plan and hotspot limits first.

The Bottom Line

For most Roku TVs, the reliable path is Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless, followed by the correct case-sensitive password. Rescan missing networks, use Hotel & Dorm Connect for captive portals, and choose Ethernet or a hotspot only when your hardware and data plan support them.
