To connect a conventional soundbar to a Roku TV, run an HDMI cable from the soundbar’s HDMI ARC/eARC port to the TV port marked ARC or eARC, then select the matching input and complete the TV’s setup. If you use a separate Roku streaming player, connect it to the TV as usual; the TV can send its audio to the soundbar over ARC/eARC. The right wiring depends on whether Roku is built into your TV, comes from a separate player, or is a Roku audio product.

First identify your Roku setup

“Roku” may mean a TV with Roku built in, a separate Roku streaming player plugged into a TV, or a Roku-branded soundbar. These are not interchangeable connection paths. The steps below cover conventional HDMI/optical soundbars as well as Roku’s TV-only wireless soundbar.

Connect a soundbar to a Roku TV with HDMI ARC or eARC

  1. Check the ports and manuals for both devices. Find the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC and the soundbar’s HDMI port for ARC/eARC or TV audio. Port names and locations vary by model.
  2. Connect the soundbar’s ARC/eARC port to the TV’s ARC/eARC port with an HDMI cable. Roku recommends a High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable to use eARC features; confirm the cable requirements in both devices’ manuals.
  3. Power on the TV and soundbar, then follow the TV’s on-screen audio or soundbar setup. If the soundbar has several inputs, choose its HDMI/ARC input rather than Bluetooth or auxiliary.
  4. If needed, enable HDMI-CEC and ARC in the TV settings. Some TVs may have these features disabled by default; exact menu labels vary.

ARC sends sound from the TV to the soundbar, including audio from built-in streaming channels, the tuner, and devices plugged into the TV. eARC performs the same return-audio role and can support higher-quality advanced formats and built-in lip-sync features, but both the TV and soundbar must support eARC to use those benefits. An eARC soundbar can connect to an ARC TV in standard ARC mode, and an ARC soundbar can connect to an eARC TV in standard ARC mode.

Roku TV Ready is a compatibility and integration feature, not a requirement for every soundbar connection. Roku advises looking for the certification mark on packaging or checking the product manual or manufacturer’s listing. See Roku’s Roku TV Ready setup guidance.

Use optical audio when HDMI ARC is unavailable

If both the TV and soundbar have compatible optical ports, connect them with an optical cable, also called TOSLINK. Roku may label the TV port “Digital audio out” or “Digital output.” Remove any protective caps from the cable ends before inserting them; Roku warns that leaving caps on can lead to a faulty connection or port damage.

Optical and HDMI ARC/eARC do not necessarily support the same audio formats. Check the manuals for the TV and soundbar to confirm which formats pass through your optical connection. Roku’s guidance on TV audio connections and audio formats is available in its digital audio connection instructions and audio-format guidance.

Connect a separate Roku streaming player and soundbar

In the usual arrangement, the Roku player connects to an HDMI input on the TV, and the TV returns audio to the soundbar through ARC/eARC. This lets the soundbar play audio from the Roku player as well as other devices connected to the TV.

Another possible arrangement is Roku player → soundbar or receiver HDMI input → TV from the soundbar’s HDMI output. Use this only if the soundbar or receiver has the required inputs and output and supports the video and audio formats you need. Check the manuals before choosing this wiring path; not every soundbar can pass video from a Roku player to the TV. Roku describes connection options in its surround-sound setup instructions.

Bluetooth pairing is not a universal substitute for an ARC connection between a TV and a generic soundbar. Roku’s Bluetooth guidance concerns supported Roku devices and Roku audio products; it does not establish that any Bluetooth soundbar can serve as the TV’s audio-return connection. See Roku’s Bluetooth audio information.

Know the Roku TV Wireless Soundbar limitation

The Roku TV Wireless Soundbar is not a conventional HDMI or optical soundbar. Roku says it pairs with a TV powered by Roku OS and does not work with other TV platforms or a standalone Roku streaming player. If your TV is not a Roku OS TV, choose a soundbar with a connection method supported by both your TV and the soundbar. Roku’s audio connection guidance covers supported setup paths.

Fix a Roku soundbar with no sound

  1. Check the basics. Make sure the soundbar is powered on, not muted, and set to a useful volume. Confirm it is on the input used for the TV connection.
  2. Check the ARC connection and setup. Confirm the HDMI cable is plugged into the TV’s ARC/eARC port, not just any HDMI input. For a Roku TV Ready soundbar, finish the TV’s soundbar setup. If using HDMI, select the soundbar’s HDMI input instead of Bluetooth or auxiliary.
  3. Reseat the cable and restart both devices. Unplug and reconnect both ends of the HDMI cable, then power-cycle the TV and soundbar.
  4. Check ARC/CEC and the audio format. Enable ARC and CEC if the TV requires them. On Roku TV Ready models, Roku gives this path: Settings > System > Audio > S/PDIF and ARC. Choose a format the soundbar supports; Roku identifies PCM stereo as a basic format all soundbars can play.
  5. For a separate Roku player, check the source and format. Verify the player’s cables and TV input, and select an available surround format supported by the sound system. If surround sound is the issue, check whether the app’s audio track actually offers 5.1. Roku’s cited player troubleshooting guidance is from its UK support site, so menus can differ elsewhere.

If PCM stereo still produces no sound after checking the connection, Roku advises contacting the soundbar manufacturer. Menu names can vary by Roku TV model and software. For Roku’s TV Ready troubleshooting steps, see Roku’s no-sound troubleshooting page; for player connections, see Roku’s streaming-player audio instructions.

Choose the connection that fits your equipment

Connection Use it when What to check
HDMI ARC/eARC The TV and conventional soundbar both have compatible ARC/eARC ports. Usually the simplest route for TV audio. Use the labeled ports, enable ARC/CEC if required, and verify eARC support and cable needs if you want eARC features.
Optical/TOSLINK Both devices have optical ports and ARC is unavailable or not the chosen route. Remove cable caps and confirm the TV and soundbar support the audio formats you plan to use.
Roku TV Wireless Soundbar You have a TV powered by Roku OS and want Roku’s wireless soundbar setup. It does not pair with another TV platform or a standalone Roku streaming player.

Before buying a cable or soundbar, check the exact port labels and supported formats in the manuals for your TV and soundbar. Roku’s port names and menu paths vary across models and software versions, and a product’s compatibility should be verified against the specific TV.
