On a PSP model with wireless LAN, open Settings > Network Settings > Infrastructure Mode > New Connection, scan for your access point, choose the matching security option, enter the exact network key, select Easy, save the profile, and run Test Connection. If the PSP cannot see the network or rejects it, the usual causes are a disabled WLAN function, an incorrect SSID or key, a security mode the PSP does not list, or address settings that were entered manually without the required values.

What you need before starting

The PSP connects through a wireless LAN access point or wireless broadband router; it does not create an Internet connection by itself. Sony’s PSP-3004 quick reference identifies these prerequisites:

  • An Internet service from an ISP.
  • A modem or other network device, as required by that service.
  • A WLAN access point or wireless broadband router.
  • The access point’s SSID (network name).
  • The access point’s encryption key or network password.

The router’s own documentation is authoritative for enabling its wireless network, finding the SSID, and checking its security configuration. Have those details available before you begin; a password that works on another device is not useful if it belongs to a different SSID or uses different capitalization.

You do not need to buy a new router just to follow this procedure. First check the PSP, the existing access point, and the saved profile. Additional hardware is only worth considering if its specifications clearly provide the security and isolation controls your PSP requires.

Confirm the PSP model

Check the model number printed on the system or its documentation. Sony publishes separate manuals, including one for PSP-E1002/E1003, so menu labels and capabilities should not be assumed to be identical across every PSP variant. The procedure below is for a PSP model with wireless LAN and should be checked against the manual for your exact model.

This model check matters before troubleshooting. If a system lacks the relevant wireless hardware, no password change or router purchase can create that capability. If the menus differ, use the matching Sony manual rather than treating a missing menu as a fault.

Connect a PSP to Wi‑Fi in Infrastructure Mode

Sony describes Infrastructure Mode as the mode for connecting a PSP to the Internet through a wireless LAN access point. Sony’s wording is: “This mode is used for connecting the PSP™ system to the Internet using a wireless LAN access point.” You must create and save a connection profile before the PSP can use that network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the network settings. From the PSP Home Menu, select Settings > Network Settings.
  2. Start a new Infrastructure profile. Choose Infrastructure Mode, then select New Connection.
  3. Search for the access point. Choose Scan. The PSP displays nearby access points and their SSIDs and security information. Select the network you intend to use, not merely the strongest-looking name.
  4. Enter a hidden SSID manually when necessary. If the network is intentionally hidden, use the setting to enter the SSID manually. Type the network name exactly; entering an SSID by hand does not establish that the radio, security mode, or access point is otherwise compatible.
  5. Choose the security type. Select the option that matches the access point’s configuration. Do not choose a similar-looking option simply because it is available.
  6. Enter the encryption key. Type the router’s key exactly, including uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and punctuation. The PSP may mask the characters as you type, so compare them carefully with the router label or administrator-provided details.
  7. Use automatic address settings in a normal home network. Select Easy. Sony says this automatically sets the basic network settings and is the usual choice.
  8. Save and test. Review the profile, save it, and run Test Connection. Read the result and follow its on-screen instructions if the test fails.

What the scan result means

A scan confirms only that the PSP detected nearby wireless advertisements and displayed their SSID and security information. It does not confirm that you know the correct key, that the selected security mode is usable, or that the access point will provide Internet access. A missing SSID can mean the access point is off, the PSP is out of range, broadcasting is disabled, or the equipment is otherwise incompatible.

If you see several similar names, use the router’s documented SSID instead of guessing. Selecting a neighbor’s network can produce a perfectly plausible password error while you are entering the credentials for your own router.

Choose the correct security setting

The PSP’s documented advanced settings list the following wireless security choices:

Security option shown in PSP documentation What to do
WEP Select it only when the access point is configured for WEP and enter the corresponding key.
WPA-PSK (TKIP) Select it when the router uses WPA-PSK with TKIP.
WPA-PSK (AES) Select it when the router uses WPA-PSK with AES.

WPA2 and WPA3 are not listed on the cited PSP advanced-settings page. That makes security compatibility a plausible explanation when a router is configured only for a mode the PSP does not expose, but it is not proof about every router, firmware revision, or configuration. If the router offers a mixed or separate network profile, check its documentation or ask the network administrator whether a profile using one of the PSP’s documented choices can be provided safely.

Do not assume that a router’s label, such as “WPA/WPA2 mixed,” tells you exactly which mode the PSP will negotiate. Open the router’s detailed wireless settings and compare its authentication and encryption choices with the PSP menu. If the router can expose a separate legacy-compatible profile, use a distinct SSID so you know which settings the PSP is using.

Older security modes can reduce protection for other devices. If a separate profile is created solely for the PSP, keep it isolated as far as the router permits, avoid sharing sensitive computers or storage on that network, and use it only when you understand the security trade-off. Do not change a production network’s security policy blindly.

Use Easy or Custom network settings?

The address-setting choice is independent of the Wi‑Fi password. In an ordinary home setup, Easy is the correct starting point. Sony says it automatically supplies the basic settings. Custom exposes manual choices for IP address, DNS, proxy, and browser settings.

Setting When to choose it Information required
Easy Typical home or small-office network where the router assigns addresses automatically. No manually supplied IP, DNS, proxy, or browser values.
Custom A network administrator or ISP specifically requires manual network parameters. The exact IP, DNS, proxy, and browser settings supplied by that administrator or ISP.

Do not switch to Custom as a guess. An incorrect static address or DNS value can make a saved profile fail even when the SSID, key, and wireless security are correct. If you previously experimented with Custom, edit the profile and recreate it with Easy before investigating more complicated causes.

Proxy and browser entries are not substitutes for a working wireless link. They matter only when the network specifically uses those settings. Ask the administrator or ISP for the complete set of values rather than copying an address from another device.

Diagnose the failure by symptom

The PSP cannot see your Wi‑Fi network

  • Confirm that the PSP’s wireless LAN function is enabled.
  • Make sure the intended access point is powered on and operating.
  • Move the PSP close to the access point and run Scan again.
  • Check the router’s SSID. If broadcasting is intentionally disabled, use Enter Manually and type the exact SSID.
  • Verify the model documentation. A procedure for one PSP variant should not be treated as proof that every variant has the same wireless capability.

If manual SSID entry still fails, the SSID itself is not the only question. The radio, access-point configuration, and security mode must also be compatible. The cited Sony material does not establish a universal modern-router band rule, so do not assume a particular 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz explanation without confirming the exact equipment documentation.

Try one controlled change at a time: first confirm WLAN is enabled, then confirm the access point is operating, then rescan nearby. Changing the router’s security, SSID, and address settings all at once makes it impossible to tell which change mattered.

Rank #3

The PSP sees the network but rejects the connection

  1. Reopen the saved profile and verify that the SSID is the intended one, especially if nearby networks have similar names.
  2. Compare the selected security type with the access point’s actual setting.
  3. Re-enter the key character by character. Check capitalization, zero versus the letter O, and any punctuation.
  4. Compare the router’s mode with the PSP’s documented choices: WEP, WPA-PSK (TKIP), or WPA-PSK (AES).
  5. If the router is configured only for a mode absent from that list, stop repeatedly entering the same password and investigate compatibility with the router administrator.

A password error and a security-mode mismatch can look similar on the PSP. Checking both prevents you from changing a correct key when the real issue is the router’s authentication mode. If the router recently changed security settings, create a fresh PSP profile after confirming the new SSID and mode rather than relying on an old saved profile.

The connection test fails after the profile is saved

A saved profile only proves that the information was stored; it does not prove that the PSP completed wireless association, received an address, or reached the Internet. Reopen the profile and compare these items with the router configuration:

  • SSID.
  • Security selection.
  • Encryption key.
  • Address-setting choice.

Return address settings to Easy unless the network administrator or ISP supplied exact manual values. Run Test Connection again and follow the on-screen guidance. Sony also directs users to the access-point or router documentation and, when appropriate, their ISP.

Interpret the test in stages. If association fails, focus on SSID, signal, security, and key. If association succeeds but address setup fails, review Easy versus Custom and any required manual values. If the PSP receives network settings but cannot reach the Internet, inspect the router and ISP connection rather than repeatedly changing the PSP password.

The PSP connects, but the browser or an online feature does not work

Treat these as separate layers:

  1. Wireless association: the PSP communicates with the access point.
  2. Internet access: the router and ISP provide a route beyond the local network.
  3. Service availability: the particular website, game server, store, or other PSP feature still operates.

A successful local Wi‑Fi connection cannot restore a discontinued service. Sony’s guide is based on system software 6.60, warns that services and features may change or be discontinued, and specifically notes that PlayStation Store no longer sells PSP products. Do not interpret a working connection test as a guarantee that a particular game server, store function, or web page remains available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Service failure can therefore be normal even when the network profile is correct. Check the current status of the specific service or game publisher where possible, and avoid changing a working router configuration solely because an obsolete feature no longer responds.

How to compare two networks or access points for PSP use

When you have more than one network or equipment option, evaluate them in this order:

  • Amazon Renewed is your trusted destination for pre-owned and refurbished products
  1. Model capability: confirm that the exact PSP variant has wireless LAN.
  2. Discoverability: determine whether the SSID appears in a scan or can be entered manually.
  3. Security: verify that the access point can use a security mode the PSP documents.
  4. Configuration control: check whether the router can provide a separate profile with the required settings instead of weakening the main network.
  5. Isolation and protection: ensure that any legacy-compatible profile can be kept appropriately separated and secured.
  6. Service requirement: establish whether the online feature you actually want still operates.

This framework distinguishes a setup error from a capability mismatch. It also prevents buying or reconfiguring equipment before checking the existing PSP profile and router settings. A network that appears in the scan is not automatically the best choice; the relevant questions are its documented security mode, the control you have over its settings, and whether it offers the service you need.

When a separate access point may help

A configurable travel router or wireless access point can be relevant when its specifications confirm that it can expose the security and network settings the PSP needs. It is not a universal fix: hardware cannot correct a mistyped key, an unsupported PSP model, an incorrect manual IP configuration, or an online service that has shut down.

Check the existing router and PSP settings first. If you consider another device, verify its supported security modes, whether it can create an isolated network, and how its configuration is maintained. The device’s documentation—not a generic assumption about “old” or “new” routers—should establish compatibility.

No specific current model or price is required by the setup instructions. Treat any purchase as conditional task-enabling equipment, not as a guaranteed solution. Confirm the return policy and the exact wireless specifications before spending money, and do not imply that a new device will restore discontinued PSP services.

What Sony’s documentation does and does not establish

  • The official setup sequence is to create an Infrastructure Mode profile, scan or enter the SSID, choose matching security, enter the key, use Easy for ordinary automatic settings, save, and test.
  • The documented PSP security choices are WEP, WPA-PSK (TKIP), and WPA-PSK (AES).
  • The guide and menu labels are tied to particular models and software documentation, including system software 6.60; they may vary by model, version, or region.
  • Sony’s guide may not reflect every later service change.
  • No official failure rate or general PSP Wi‑Fi success statistic is established, so a percentage cannot be used to predict your result.

Those limits are useful when interpreting troubleshooting advice. A documented menu path is strong evidence for the listed models and software, but it is not a promise that every later router, firmware combination, website, or game server will behave identically.

Fast recovery checklist

  • Confirm the exact PSP model and wireless LAN capability.
  • Enable the PSP wireless LAN function.
  • Power and verify the access point.
  • Scan near the router, or enter a hidden SSID manually.
  • Select the security mode that exactly matches the router.
  • Enter the key with correct case and characters.
  • Choose Easy unless authoritative manual values are required.
  • Save the profile and run Test Connection.
  • If it fails, compare the saved SSID, security, key, and address settings with the router.
  • If Wi‑Fi works but an online feature fails, check whether that service still exists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can every PSP connect to Wi‑Fi?

No assumption is safe across the whole PSP family. Check the exact model and its Sony manual; Sony publishes separate documentation, including for PSP-E1002/E1003. The procedure applies to a model with wireless LAN.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the correct PSP menu path?

Select Settings > Network Settings > Infrastructure Mode > New Connection. Scan for the access point, choose matching security, enter the key, select Easy, save, and run Test Connection.

Can I connect if my SSID is hidden?

Yes, Sony’s advanced settings allow manual SSID entry. Type the network name exactly, but remember that manual entry does not prove the radio, security mode, or access point is compatible.

Can a PSP connect to WPA2 or WPA3 Wi‑Fi?

Sony’s cited PSP advanced-settings page lists WEP, WPA-PSK (TKIP), and WPA-PSK (AES), not WPA2 or WPA3. If a router offers only an unlisted mode, investigate whether it can provide a compatible separate profile; do not assume compatibility.

Should I choose Easy or Custom?

Choose Easy for a normal home network. Choose Custom only when an administrator or ISP gives you exact IP, DNS, proxy, or browser values. Guessing Custom settings can make an otherwise correct profile fail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the PSP see my network but reject the password?

Verify that you selected the intended SSID, matched the router’s exact security mode, and entered the key with correct capitalization, numbers, and punctuation. A security-mode mismatch can look like a password error.

What should I do when Test Connection fails?

Reopen the saved profile and compare the SSID, security choice, key, and address-setting choice with the router. Return to Easy unless authoritative manual values are required, then run Test Connection again and follow its on-screen guidance.

Why does Wi‑Fi connect but a game or browser still fail?

Wireless association, Internet access, and service availability are separate layers. Sony warns that services and features can change or be discontinued and notes that PlayStation Store no longer sells PSP products, so a successful connection test does not guarantee a particular service works.

Do I need to buy a travel router?

Usually check the existing PSP and router first. A separate access point is only a conditional option when its specifications confirm the needed security settings and isolation. It cannot fix a wrong key, unsupported model, bad manual values, or a discontinued service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use Infrastructure Mode, match the exact SSID and one of the PSP’s documented security choices, enter the key carefully, select Easy unless you have authoritative manual values, and run Test Connection. If that fails, compare the saved profile with the router one item at a time. A working Wi‑Fi link still does not guarantee that an old PSP website, store feature, or game service remains online.
