Connect the source’s analog preamp or line output to a matching input on the power amplifier, then connect the amplifier’s speaker terminals to passive speakers. Use RCA or compatible balanced XLR interconnects, turn every component off before wiring, and confirm how a streamer controls volume before using it without a separate preamp.

Understand the signal path before you plug anything in

A separate power-amplifier system has three distinct stages:

  1. Source and control: a preamp, streamer with a suitable analog output, or a streamer feeding a DAC/preamp.
  2. Power: the power amplifier, which drives the speakers.
  3. Speakers: passive speakers connected to the amplifier’s speaker terminals.

The normal route is:

Source analog PRE OUT or LINE OUT → power-amplifier line input → power-amplifier speaker terminals → passive speakers

The cable between the source and amplifier carries a line-level audio signal. The cable between the amplifier and passive speakers carries the amplifier’s output. They are different connections and must not be interchanged.

Find an analog output on the source

Look for labels such as PRE OUT, LINE OUT, or an equivalent analog output. A digital-only output—such as an optical, coaxial digital, USB, or network connection—is not the analog connection described here. If the streamer has no suitable analog output, it needs an intervening DAC, preamp, or another component that converts and provides an analog line output.

Read the source manual to determine whether its analog output is variable, fixed, or configurable. A variable output can normally be used as the level-control point; a fixed output requires volume control elsewhere. Streamer behavior differs by model, so do not assume that an app volume slider, remote control, or front-panel control works in every output mode.

Find a matching input on the power amplifier

Power amplifiers commonly provide line inputs using RCA, XLR, or both. The input may be labelled LINE IN, INPUT, or a channel-specific equivalent. Select the input type that physically and electrically matches the source output. Do not connect a source output to the amplifier’s speaker terminals or to another high-power connector.

Confirm the speakers are passive

Passive speakers have speaker terminals and require an external amplifier. Powered or active speakers contain their own amplifier and normally accept a line or preamp signal. A power amplifier’s speaker output is not a line output. Edifier’s support guidance warns: “If you are using a set of powered speakers you cannot connect them to a powered amplifier as this will cause damage to the speaker’s internal amplifier.”

RCA or XLR: choose the connector that matches

RCA and balanced XLR are alternative interconnect types for the source-to-power-amplifier link. Neither the reviewed manufacturer documentation nor the connection requirements establishes that one connector always sounds better in every system. Compatibility, correct wiring, and the equipment manuals are the deciding factors.

Interconnect Use it when What to verify
Stereo RCA audio cable The source provides left and right RCA analog outputs and the amplifier provides matching RCA inputs. Connect left to left and right to right; make sure both plugs are fully seated.
Balanced XLR audio cable The source and amplifier both provide compatible XLR outputs and inputs. Check the manuals for connector pin arrangement and polarity before connecting.

Buy a stereo RCA audio cable when both devices use RCA. Choose a balanced XLR audio cable only when both devices have compatible XLR connections. Do not buy adapters on the assumption that any XLR and RCA sockets can be converted without checking the equipment documentation.

Step-by-step: connect a preamp to a power amplifier

  1. Power down the system. Turn off the power amplifier and the preamp. Yamaha’s connection instructions also call for disconnecting the source product’s AC cord from the outlet before making the connection. Follow the stricter shutdown procedure in your own manuals.
  2. Identify the preamp output. Locate the left and right analog PRE OUT or LINE OUT sockets. Do not use a tape-monitor input, phono input, digital socket, or speaker output as a substitute.
  3. Identify the amplifier input. Locate the matching left and right line inputs. If the amplifier has separate input groups, use the pair specified by its manual.
  4. Choose one cable type. Use a stereo RCA cable for matching RCA sockets, or compatible XLR cables for matching balanced sockets. If using XLR, verify the pin arrangement and polarity specified for both components.
  5. Connect the left channel. Run the source’s left output to the amplifier’s left input. Keep the channel labels consistent.
  6. Connect the right channel. Run the source’s right output to the amplifier’s right input. Push each connector fully home without forcing it.
  7. Connect passive speakers to the amplifier. Attach the left speaker to the amplifier’s left speaker terminals and the right speaker to the right terminals, following the amplifier manual for terminal polarity and any impedance requirements it specifies.
  8. Check every connection. Confirm that the source-to-amplifier cable is in a line input, that speaker wires are in speaker terminals, and that no bare conductor can touch an adjacent terminal.
  9. Set a safe starting level. Turn the preamp volume down before restoring power. If the preamp has a mute control, engage it while powering up.
  10. Power up and test quietly. Switch on the source and preamp according to their manuals, then switch on the power amplifier if that is the manufacturer’s recommended sequence. Start playback at low volume and raise it gradually.

Connecting a streamer directly to a power amplifier

A streamer can replace a separate preamp only when it provides a suitable analog output and a dependable way to control level. Some streamers have a built-in DAC and variable analog output; others provide a fixed line output or only digital outputs. The model’s manual is the authority for what its output does.

Direct connection is appropriate when

  • The streamer has left and right analog PRE OUT or LINE OUT sockets that match an amplifier input.
  • The streamer’s output mode and volume behavior are documented.
  • You can set a low starting level and control volume safely from the streamer, its remote, or its app.
  • The speakers are passive and will be connected to the power amplifier, not to the streamer.

Use a DAC or preamp in the middle when

  • The streamer offers only digital outputs.
  • Its analog output is fixed and there is no other level control.
  • You need source selection, muting, multiple analog inputs, or a physical volume control that the streamer does not provide.
  • The streamer’s documentation does not clearly explain whether volume commands affect the selected analog output.

Direct-streamer wiring procedure

  1. Turn off and unplug the streamer and power amplifier before wiring.
  2. Connect the streamer’s analog left and right outputs to the amplifier’s matching RCA or XLR inputs.
  3. Connect passive speakers to the amplifier’s speaker terminals.
  4. Set the streamer to its lowest safe output level, if it has a variable output. If it has a fixed output, verify that a separate preamp or level control is present before playing.
  5. Restore power, start playback, and increase the level slowly while confirming that the streamer’s control actually changes the listening volume.

Do not infer safe behavior from the presence of a volume icon alone. A control may affect only headphones, a particular zone, or a digital stream rather than the analog output feeding the amplifier.

How to wire powered speakers instead

Powered speakers require the opposite arrangement. Feed their line or preamp input from a source or preamp output and leave the power amplifier out of that path. The correct powered-speaker route is:

Source analog PRE OUT or LINE OUT → powered-speaker line input

Never run a power amplifier’s speaker terminals into a powered speaker’s line input. The amplified signal can damage the powered speaker’s internal amplifier. If a receiver or integrated amplifier has several output types, verify that the selected socket is explicitly a preamp or line output before connecting powered speakers.

Connection examples

Preamp with RCA output and amplifier with RCA input

Use a stereo RCA audio cable. Connect the preamp’s left PRE OUT to the amplifier’s left input and the right PRE OUT to the right input. Connect the passive speakers to the amplifier’s speaker terminals. This is the simplest arrangement when both rear panels use RCA.

Preamp with XLR output and amplifier with XLR input

Use a pair of compatible balanced XLR cables. Confirm the pin arrangement and polarity in both manuals, then connect left output to left input and right output to right input. Speaker wiring remains separate: passive speakers still connect to the amplifier’s speaker terminals.

Streamer with analog RCA output and amplifier with XLR input

Do not assume that an adapter is suitable merely because the plug shapes can be changed. Check both manuals for an approved connection method, output level, grounding arrangement, and pin compatibility. If the documentation does not establish a safe direct interface, insert a DAC or preamp with the required output and input types.

Power-up, volume, and shutdown practices

  • Make or change connections with the equipment switched off, and disconnect AC power when the manufacturer instructs you to do so.
  • Start with the source or preamp volume low. A fixed-output source needs a separate level-control point.
  • Test one channel at a time at low level if you are troubleshooting.
  • Stop playback and turn the system down before changing interconnects or speaker wiring.
  • Use the amplifier manual for its speaker-terminal procedure; do not guess which terminals are active in bridged, bi-wired, or multi-zone configurations.

Troubleshooting by symptom

No sound from either speaker

  1. Confirm that the source is playing an audible signal and that its analog output is enabled.
  2. Check that the interconnect is connected to the source’s PRE OUT or LINE OUT, not an input or digital-only socket.
  3. Verify that the amplifier is set to the input receiving the cable and that its power indicator shows normal operation.
  4. Confirm that passive speakers are connected to the amplifier’s speaker terminals.
  5. Check the streamer or preamp volume, mute state, and output mode.

Only one channel plays

  1. Inspect the left and right labels at both ends of the interconnect.
  2. Reseat the connector on the silent channel.
  3. At low volume, swap the left and right source connections to determine whether the silence follows the source output or the amplifier input. Restore the correct orientation after testing.
  4. Check the silent speaker’s wire and terminal connection.

The sound is unexpectedly loud

Stop playback and reduce the source or preamp level immediately. Recheck whether the source output is fixed, whether the streamer’s volume control affects the selected analog output, and whether the amplifier was connected to the intended line input. Do not continue testing at high level while the control behavior is uncertain.

There is hum or intermittent sound

  1. Power down and reseat every RCA or XLR connector.
  2. Check that left and right connectors are not partially inserted.
  3. Inspect the cable route for accidental strain at the plugs.
  4. Reconnect using the connector type supported by both manuals, and verify XLR pin compatibility if applicable.
  5. Test with the source, amplifier, and speakers connected exactly as shown in their manuals before adding other equipment.

The speakers appear damaged after a wiring change

Disconnect the power amplifier immediately. If powered speakers were connected to its speaker outputs, do not reconnect them for further testing; that connection can damage their internal amplifier. Rebuild the system with a line or preamp output feeding the powered speakers, or use passive speakers on the power amplifier.
