On a Playdate, open Settings > Wi‑Fi to reconnect to a wireless network or join a new one. The documented compatibility is standard 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n Wi‑Fi. Playdate uses the connection to receive games and system updates. Panic’s current help pages do not describe a list of saved networks or a control for deleting or editing one, so do not rely on undocumented “forget network” steps.
What you need before connecting
Playdate’s official Wi‑Fi guidance identifies one network requirement: the wireless network must provide standard 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n service. That is a compatibility specification, not a promise about speed or range. A router that broadcasts only a 5 GHz network is not documented as supported.
- Supported band: 2.4 GHz.
- Documented standards: 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11n.
- Connection uses: downloading games and installing system updates.
- Special hardware: the official instructions do not establish a need for a dedicated router, adapter, cable or other accessory.
If your router has both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radios, the documentation confirms only the 2.4 GHz side. It does not state whether a particular dual-band configuration, security mode or band-steering setting is required. Start with the network that visibly offers 2.4 GHz service rather than assuming that a 5 GHz-only name will work. See Playdate Help’s games and updates guidance for the documented requirement.

The official procedure is deliberately short. The Wi‑Fi screen is the starting point for both a first connection and a later reconnection.

- Turn on the Playdate and open Settings.
- Choose Wi‑Fi.
- Use the Wi‑Fi screen to reconnect to a network or connect to a new network.
Panic’s help page confirms that menu path and those two actions, but its accessible instructions do not spell out every screen that may appear afterward, such as the exact network-selection or password-entry sequence. The labels and prompts shown on your Playdate are therefore the authoritative next step; do not assume a particular button order from an unrelated guide.
Reconnecting to a network you have used before
Open Settings > Wi‑Fi and use that screen to reconnect. If the network is not available, first verify that the router is currently broadcasting a compatible 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n network. The official page does not provide a separate “reconnect” command outside the Wi‑Fi screen.
Joining a different network
Open Settings > Wi‑Fi and use the same screen to connect to a new network. Choose the network and follow the prompts presented by the Playdate. Because the official text does not expose a detailed selection or password workflow, the article cannot reliably name controls that may differ by system version.
Wi‑Fi during initial Playdate setup
Getting Started guidance places Wi‑Fi among the first setup tasks. The setup flow includes connecting the handheld to Wi‑Fi, linking it to its owner’s Playdate account by signing in at play.date, and setting the time. If you skipped Wi‑Fi during setup, you can return to Settings > Wi‑Fi later; the same documented menu is used to join a network.

Account linking and time-setting are separate setup steps. A successful wireless connection does not, by itself, complete account linking. Follow the on-screen setup prompts for those items, using Panic’s Getting Started instructions as the official overview.
Use Wi‑Fi to receive games and system updates
Playdate connects to the internet to automatically receive games and system updates. If your goal is an update rather than a new network, connect first and then use the dedicated update path:
- Open Settings.
- Choose System.
- Select System Update.
- Follow the prompt if an update is available.
This is the menu path specified in Playdate’s official updating instructions. The update page does not replace the Wi‑Fi requirement: the handheld must have an internet connection before it can check for or download an update.

That means a reliable, documented sequence such as Settings > Wi‑Fi > Saved Networks > Forget cannot be supplied. Do not treat menu paths from another device or operating system as Playdate instructions. If you need to remove a stored network, confirm the current behavior with Playdate support. The available official guidance confirms how to reconnect or join a new network, not how to inspect or delete stored credentials.
Choosing the right network when several are available
The documented decision is about compatibility, not router performance. Use these checks before attempting a connection:
- Look for 2.4 GHz service. The specification names 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n.
- Do not assume 5 GHz-only works. Support for a 5 GHz-only network is not established by the official page.
- Use the Wi‑Fi screen for both cases. Reconnection and joining a new network begin at Settings > Wi‑Fi.
- Keep the goal in mind. Wi‑Fi is needed for game delivery and system updates, and is part of initial setup.
The documentation does not say that a dual-band router must split its network names, disable band steering, or use a particular encryption setting. Those are router-specific assumptions, not Playdate requirements stated by Panic.

| What you observe | What the official material establishes | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| The network does not appear | Playdate is documented for standard 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n Wi‑Fi. | Check that the router is actually offering a compatible 2.4 GHz network, then return to Settings > Wi‑Fi. The help page does not specify additional scanning or hidden-network steps. |
| You want to switch networks | The same Wi‑Fi screen is used to connect to a new network. | Open Settings > Wi‑Fi and follow the prompts shown on the handheld. |
| A system update will not start | Updates are checked from Settings > System > System Update after connecting to Wi‑Fi. | Confirm the Playdate has an internet connection, then open the documented update path. The update page does not provide a more specific network-error remedy. |
| You need to delete a remembered network | No official saved-network deletion procedure is described. | Do not use an unverified menu sequence; ask Playdate support to confirm the current behavior for your software version. |
| Password, captive-portal or enterprise-authentication issue | The consulted help page does not document these cases. | Treat the issue as unresolved by the published instructions and seek Playdate support or advice from the network administrator rather than assuming a particular workaround. |
Incorrect password or authentication prompts
Panic’s accessible Wi‑Fi text does not describe password retry behavior, enterprise authentication, captive portals or router security modes. If a prompt appears and the connection fails, record the exact message and consult Playdate support. It is safer than claiming that a particular security mode, browser-based sign-in or credential reset is supported.
Hidden network names and weak signals
The official guidance does not explain how to join a hidden SSID, how signal strength is displayed, or how distance from a router affects setup. The only documented compatibility check is the 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n requirement. If the network is hidden or marginal, ask the network administrator for a compatible visible network or contact Playdate support for device-specific guidance.

What the official documentation does—and does not—promise
The pages support a narrow but useful conclusion: Playdate can use a standard 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n network, and Settings > Wi‑Fi is where you reconnect or join another network. Wi‑Fi supports automatic game delivery and system updates, while initial setup also includes account linking and time configuration.

They do not provide router-performance comparisons, a required dual-band configuration, a password-entry walkthrough, captive-portal support, enterprise-authentication instructions, hidden-network handling, or saved-network deletion steps. Keeping those limits visible prevents a generic router guide from being mistaken for an official Playdate procedure.
Quick Recap
Practical checklist
- Confirm that the available wireless service includes standard 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n.
- On the handheld, open Settings > Wi‑Fi.
- Use that screen to reconnect or join a new network.
- For an update, open Settings > System > System Update after connecting.
- During first-time setup, complete Wi‑Fi, Playdate account linking at play.date and time setting.
- If you need to inspect or forget a saved network, do not assume an undocumented control exists; confirm the procedure with Playdate support.
