To connect a phone to a Yamaha keyboard, first check the keyboard’s exact model and ports, your phone’s connector, and what you want to do. For compatible instruments, the usual options are a USB data connection, Bluetooth MIDI, or Wi-Fi. The right cable or adapter—and whether a feature such as Smart Pianist will work—depends on that specific combination.
Choose the connection that fits your keyboard and goal
Connecting a phone for instrument control or a compatible music app is different from recording the keyboard’s audio into the phone. Yamaha’s Smart Pianist app offers control and music-related features for listed compatible instruments, but supported features and connection methods vary by model. Check Yamaha’s Smart Pianist compatibility specifications and the keyboard’s manual before choosing a setup.

Yamaha’s Smart Pianist connection setup documentation says, “To use Smart Pianist, you will need to connect it to a compatible instrument.” Use its setup selector to confirm your keyboard and device before buying a cable or adapter.
Connect by USB
Identify the keyboard port and phone connector
Look for a USB TO HOST port on the keyboard and confirm its connector type in the instrument manual. Yamaha documents a USB Type-A-to-Type-B cable for instruments with a USB TO HOST Type B port. The phone end depends on the phone: Yamaha’s setup documentation lists an Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter for documented Lightning setups and matching USB-C cable configurations for newer USB-C devices and instruments. These are not interchangeable assumptions; confirm the exact combination with Yamaha’s setup selector and your keyboard’s manual.

Make the wired connection
- Turn the keyboard off before connecting, as directed in Yamaha’s Android connection manual.
- Connect the data-capable USB cable to the keyboard’s USB TO HOST port and attach the correct phone-side connector or adapter.
- Turn the keyboard on, then open the compatible app and follow its connection prompts.
For the USB setup described in Yamaha’s Smart Device Connection Manual for Android, the cable must support communication and be shorter than 3 meters. That guidance describes Yamaha’s documented setup; follow your instrument’s manual if it specifies otherwise.
Connect with Bluetooth MIDI
Bluetooth MIDI is available only on supported instruments, either through built-in functionality or, for compatible keyboards, Yamaha’s UD-BT01 wireless MIDI adapter. Check the model manual for availability and pairing instructions. In Smart Pianist, Bluetooth provides a MIDI/control connection, not the audio-recording route: Yamaha states that audio recording is unavailable when the app is connected by Bluetooth. If recording through Smart Pianist is your goal, choose a different supported connection method.

Connect over Wi-Fi
Yamaha documents wireless LAN connections, including use of its UD-WL01 adapter with supported instruments. The Smart Pianist Wi-Fi route may require a router or access point; without one, certain internet-dependent functions will not be available. Yamaha also notes that some connection options are unavailable in certain countries or regions. Confirm the keyboard’s support and local availability before purchasing an adapter.

Set up Smart Pianist
Compatibility depends on both the instrument and the phone or tablet. Yamaha’s USA specifications list supported families including CSP, CLP, CVP, YDP, P-series, and NP-series, with model exclusions and differences in functions and connection methods. Do not treat those families as blanket support for every model. Check the instrument list and the current App Store or Google Play listing for supported devices and operating systems.

- Confirm that your exact Yamaha instrument and phone or tablet are supported.
- Choose a connection method and prepare the required cable or supported wireless feature.
- Install and open Smart Pianist.
- In the app, go to Menu > Instrument > Start Connection Wizard and follow the prompts. Yamaha’s Smart Pianist User Guide describes this sequence.
While Smart Pianist is connected, the app’s settings replace the instrument’s settings, and some keyboard controls may be limited. Disconnect the app if you need to restore normal operation of the instrument’s controls.

- Check the model and port: Verify the exact keyboard model and its terminals against the instrument manual; Yamaha’s connection procedures vary by instrument.
- Check the cable: A charging-only cable will not provide the communication needed for a USB connection.
- Check app compatibility: Confirm that both the instrument and phone are supported. Compatibility differs across apps and models.
- Reduce possible wireless interference: Yamaha’s Android manual recommends enabling Airplane Mode if communication noise occurs. If the connection uses Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, turn that radio back on afterward.
- Recheck adapters and regional support: An adapter listed for one phone connector or keyboard port may not fit another, and some wireless options may not be available in your region.
Yamaha provides separate Smart Pianist setup guidance, Android connection instructions, and a iPhone/iPad connection manual. Use the instructions for your device and follow the keyboard’s own manual where steps differ.
