A PS3 can connect to a phone hotspot only if the hotspot’s wireless mode and security settings are compatible with the console, and the hotspot has working mobile data. Start by checking whether the hotspot appears in the PS3’s wireless scan, then use the console’s Internet connection test to pinpoint the failure. Sony says the wireless network equipment should support 802.11b or 802.11g; hotspot options vary by phone, so check the phone maker’s instructions rather than assuming a particular setting is available.
Connect the PS3 to your phone hotspot
You need the hotspot’s network name (SSID), its security key, and a phone hotspot that is turned on and has Internet access. Sony’s PS3 setup flow is:
- On the PS3, open Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Settings.
- Select Wireless, then choose Scan.
- Select your hotspot’s SSID from the list.
- Enter the hotspot’s security key carefully and save the settings.
- Run the PS3’s Internet connection test and note which part fails.
The PS3 manual explains that wireless setup depends on the access point and network environment. It identifies the SSID and WEP/WPA key as access-point information and describes WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK choices in the cited later-model manual. Use a security mode supported by both the console and hotspot; do not weaken hotspot security or make it an open network just to test. Sony’s instructions are in the PS3-01-1.6 User Manual and CECH-2501A User Manual, software version 3.30.

If the PS3 cannot find the hotspot
- Confirm the phone’s hotspot is on and set to broadcast its network name. Keep the phone near the console and scan again.
- If the hotspot remains missing, check the phone maker’s documentation for wireless band and mode options. Sony says relevant wireless equipment should support 802.11b or 802.11g. Not every current phone exposes those legacy modes, and available controls differ by phone.
- If the PS3 offers manual network setup, enter the hotspot’s SSID as shown on the phone. The PS3 manual describes both scanning for an access point and entering network information manually.

If the hotspot appears but the PS3 will not connect
Check the security key and wireless compatibility
Select the correct SSID and re-enter the hotspot password, paying attention to capitalization and similar-looking characters. If the key is correct but setup still fails, check that the hotspot’s security mode and wireless protocol are supported by the PS3. The cited Sony material mentions WEP and WPA/WPA2-PSK; it does not establish PS3 support for WPA3 or every phone’s hotspot implementation.
Find out whether the fault is specific to the PS3
Connect another wireless device to the same hotspot. If that device also lacks Internet access, check the phone’s mobile-data connection and contact the carrier if service still fails. If another device works, focus on the PS3’s password, wireless compatibility, and network settings. Sony’s error guidance recommends this other-device test and checking that network equipment firmware or drivers are functioning and current.

Temporarily disable Media Server and proxy settings
For PS3 error 80710016, Sony lists disabling the Media Server connection and turning off a configured proxy as troubleshooting steps. On the console, use Settings > Network Settings > Media Server Connection > Disable. If you configured a proxy in the PS3’s network setup, turn it off for the test. Restore settings you need after troubleshooting.

A successful Internet connection test confirms basic connectivity; it does not guarantee that every game’s online features or voice/video chat will work through a mobile network. The PS3 manual says UPnP can usually be enabled and warns that disabling it may restrict online communication features in games and voice/video chat. That is a general manual note, not a guarantee that enabling UPnP will overcome restrictions on a phone hotspot or mobile carrier. Check the game’s own connection guidance and the phone or carrier’s hotspot terms if basic access works but a particular online feature does not. If the wireless connection is slow or unstable
Move the phone closer to the PS3 and reduce nearby sources of wireless interference. Sony notes that interference can affect wireless performance and recommends Ethernet if data transfer speed decreases or the wireless controller does not work properly. An Ethernet cable is an option only if you can connect the PS3 to a compatible router or wired network; it does not connect the console directly to a phone hotspot. See the PS3-01-1.6 User Manual.
