The simplest setup is a direct HDMI connection: plug an HDMI cable into the mini PC’s HDMI output and the TV’s HDMI input, select that input on the TV, then press Windows+P and choose Second screen only. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display to select a resolution and refresh rate that the mini PC, cable path and TV all support.

That connection lets a TV act as the mini PC’s display, but gaming performance is not determined by the words “mini PC.” Graphics hardware, memory, cooling, the game and the TV’s supported display modes determine what you can actually run. The steps below show how to connect the hardware, configure Windows, route audio, add controls, enable HDR when supported and diagnose common failures.

What you need before connecting

Gather the following items and verify the specifications before buying an adapter or cable:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A mini PC with an HDMI output, or a different video output that is confirmed to support display output.
  • A television with an available HDMI input.
  • An HDMI cable that is suitable for the display mode you intend to use. The connector alone does not guarantee every resolution or refresh-rate combination.
  • Power for both the mini PC and the TV, plus a Windows installation with current graphics and chipset drivers where available.
  • An optional PC-compatible game controller. Compatibility must be checked for the controller, Windows and each game; no controller model is universally guaranteed.

Microsoft notes that external-display capability depends on the exact device model and the cables or video adapters being used. Its guidance is written for Surface hardware, so treat it as a compatibility principle rather than evidence that every mini PC has the same outputs. See Microsoft’s external-display guidance.

Connect the mini PC to the TV with HDMI

HDMI is normally the shortest and least complicated path because it can carry both video and audio. Use these steps in order.

  1. Identify the ports. Find the mini PC’s HDMI output and an HDMI input on the television. Do not plug into a port that is labeled only as an output. If the mini PC has several video ports, check its manual or specification sheet to determine which ones actually support display output.
  2. Connect the cable. With the devices powered off or in standby, connect one end of the HDMI cable to the mini PC and the other to the selected TV input. Push each connector in firmly without forcing it.
  3. Turn on the TV and choose the input. Use the TV remote’s Input, Source or similarly named control and select the HDMI port you used. Labels vary by manufacturer, so use the television manual if the port name is unclear.
  4. Start or wake the mini PC. Give Windows time to detect the display. If the TV remains blank, leave the cable connected and continue with the input and troubleshooting checks below.
  5. Choose how Windows uses the screens. Press Windows+P and select a display mode. For a TV-only gaming setup, choose Second screen only. If the mini PC’s original monitor should remain active, choose Duplicate or Extend.
  6. Set a supported mode. Open Settings > System > Display, select the TV if more than one display appears, then open Advanced display. Review the available resolution and refresh-rate choices and select a combination supported by the mini PC, HDMI path and TV.

Microsoft’s multiple-monitor instructions document the Windows+P choices and the Display settings path; see How to use multiple monitors in Windows.

Choose the right Windows display mode

Windows+P option What appears on the TV Useful situation
Second screen only The TV is the active display and the other screen is turned off by Windows. A living-room setup in which the TV is the only screen you use.
Duplicate The same desktop appears on the TV and another connected display. Showing the same image on both screens; the usable mode may be limited by the display combination.
Extend Windows treats the TV and the other display as separate desktop areas. Keeping a monitor for the desktop while using the TV for a game or another window.

If Windows chooses the wrong screen, open Settings > System > Display, select Identify to see the display numbers, then select the TV and use the display controls available for that screen. A game may open on the primary display even when the TV is connected, so make the TV the main display in the same area or select the game’s display setting if the game provides one.

Set resolution and refresh rate without guessing

Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and inspect the modes Windows reports for the TV. The list is the result of the entire connection chain: the mini PC’s graphics output, the cable, any adapter or receiver, and the television input. Select only a mode that all of those components support.

If a desired resolution or refresh rate is absent, do not assume that buying a more expensive-looking cable will solve it. Check the mini PC’s port specification, the TV manual and the adapter’s specifications. A different HDMI input on the same television may support a different set of modes, and an adapter can impose its own limit. The available choices in Windows are the practical confirmation of what the current connection advertises.

When a mode causes a blank screen, wait for Windows to revert if it offers a confirmation prompt. If it does not, reconnect the original monitor or use Windows display recovery options, then return to Advanced display and choose a safer mode. Change one setting at a time so you know which choice caused the failure.

Use the TV for audio and add couch controls

Route sound over HDMI

HDMI carries audio as well as video. In Windows, open the sound output selector and choose the TV or the HDMI audio device associated with it. If the TV is visible as a display but silent, check that the television is not muted, that its volume is raised and that Windows has not selected speakers or a headset connected to the mini PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When several HDMI or wireless audio entries appear, select the one corresponding to the active TV connection. Start a video or system sound after changing the output to confirm that audio is actually reaching the television.

Use a game controller

A controller can be more comfortable than a keyboard and mouse from a sofa, but compatibility is a three-way question: Windows must recognize the controller, the game must support its input method, and any wireless receiver or Bluetooth connection must work with the mini PC. The available documentation does not establish a universal pairing procedure or certify a particular controller. Check the controller maker’s Windows instructions and the game’s input settings before purchase.

Keep a keyboard and mouse nearby for Windows sign-in, driver updates, launchers and games that do not support controllers. If the game detects the controller but buttons are wrong, inspect the game’s controller layout rather than changing the TV connection.

Other ways to connect the mini PC

Connection method What must be true Important limitation
HDMI The mini PC has a compatible HDMI output, the TV has an HDMI input, and the cable path supports the intended mode. There is no single cable specification that is guaranteed for every mini PC, TV and resolution/refresh combination; verify the actual mode.
USB-C to HDMI The specific USB-C port on the mini PC supports video output through the relevant display alternate mode, and the cable or adapter supports it. USB-C describes the connector shape, not guaranteed video capability. A USB-C port used only for data or charging will not produce a picture through a passive display adapter.
Wireless display adapter A compatible wireless display adapter is connected to the TV’s HDMI input and powered as its instructions require; Windows supports the connection. Wireless latency and reliability for games are not established by the cited guidance, so it is an alternative display path rather than a proven choice for latency-sensitive gaming.

When USB-C can replace HDMI

Before buying a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, read the mini PC’s exact port description. Look for explicit support for video output or a display alternate mode. Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance explains why a USB-C connector by itself does not prove display capability; see Fix USB-C problems in Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the port supports video, connect the adapter to that port, connect an HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV and select the corresponding HDMI input. If Windows detects nothing, test the mini PC’s native HDMI output first. That separates a USB-C capability or adapter problem from a general Windows display problem.

How wireless display works

For a wireless route, plug a compatible wireless display adapter into an HDMI input on the television and connect its USB power lead as the adapter instructions specify. In Windows, press Windows+K and select the adapter from the available displays. Microsoft’s instructions are at Use the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter.

Wireless mirroring can be useful when running a cable is impractical, but the available documentation does not measure gaming latency, frame pacing or image quality. For games where input timing matters, use a direct wired connection unless testing your own setup shows that wireless is acceptable.

Enable HDR only when every part supports it

HDR is not enabled merely because a TV advertises HDR. Windows requires compatible hardware on both the PC and the display, and the game must also provide HDR support for an HDR image in that game. Microsoft describes the requirements in What is HDR in Windows? and the settings procedure in HDR settings in Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the TV and select it as the active display in Settings > System > Display.
  2. Open the HDR section for that display. If Windows does not show HDR controls, the current hardware and connection have not exposed HDR support.
  3. Turn on the HDR option only if the PC, connection path and TV meet the required hardware conditions.
  4. Launch an HDR-capable game and enable its HDR option separately if the game provides one.

If the desktop looks washed out, too dark or otherwise incorrect after enabling HDR, turn it off temporarily and verify the TV input, Windows display mode, graphics-driver support and the game’s own HDR setting. Do not treat the presence of an HDR switch as certification that a particular mini PC or television combination will produce a good gaming image.

Can a mini PC connected to a TV run games?

Yes, a mini PC can be used as a TV gaming computer, but the phrase “mini PC” does not identify a performance level. Before installing a game, check the exact model’s graphics hardware, installed memory, cooling design and storage, then compare those specifications with the game’s requirements. Also confirm that the TV supports at least one display mode the mini PC can deliver through the chosen connection.

No authoritative benchmark in the available material establishes a frame rate, resolution, input latency or “console-like” result for an unspecified mini PC. Promising a number without the exact computer, game, settings and TV would be misleading. Use the game’s own graphics menu to tune quality after the connection is stable.

Performance checks before you buy or install a game

  • Graphics processor: Identify the mini PC’s integrated or discrete GPU and compare it with the game’s minimum and recommended requirements.
  • Memory: Check installed RAM and the game’s requirement. Integrated graphics may also share system memory, so capacity and configuration can matter.
  • Cooling and power: Confirm that the mini PC can sustain load without severe thermal throttling. A compact enclosure does not guarantee a particular cooling capacity.
  • Storage: Leave enough free space for the game and updates; storage capacity is separate from graphics performance.
  • Display mode: In Windows Advanced display, verify that the TV exposes the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use.
  • Game settings: Start with the game’s recommended or low preset, then raise individual settings while watching for stutter or overheating.

What to adjust when a game runs poorly

First confirm that the TV is using the intended Windows mode and that no duplicate-display arrangement is forcing an unexpected limitation. Then reduce demanding in-game effects, resolution or rendering scale one change at a time. If performance still falls short, compare the game’s requirements with the mini PC’s actual GPU and memory rather than assuming the HDMI connection is the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the mini PC’s ventilation openings clear and place it where it can dissipate heat. If performance degrades after several minutes, temperature or power management may be involved; check the manufacturer’s thermal guidance and Windows power settings instead of repeatedly changing the TV refresh rate.

Troubleshoot a blank screen or “No signal” message

The TV is on the wrong input

Use the TV remote’s Input or Source control and select the exact HDMI port used. If the television has several ports, test each labeled input only after moving the cable to that port. A correct Windows configuration cannot display through a TV input that is not selected.

The cable or port is not making a usable connection

Power down if necessary, reseat both HDMI connectors and inspect the cable for visible damage. Test the mini PC with another known-good display or test the TV input with another HDMI source if available. These tests isolate whether the fault follows the mini PC, cable or TV port.

Windows is sending the image to another display

Press Windows+P and choose Duplicate first so you can confirm that Windows recognizes the TV, then switch to Second screen only for the living-room setup. In Settings > System > Display, select Identify and verify that the TV appears as a detected display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The selected mode is unsupported

If the screen went blank immediately after changing resolution or refresh rate, return to the previous mode or reconnect the original monitor and choose a mode listed under Advanced display. The connection must support the selected mode end to end; an adapter, cable or TV input can narrow the choices.

Troubleshoot picture, sound and HDR separately

Picture works but audio comes from the mini PC

Open Windows’ sound output selector and choose the HDMI device associated with the TV. Confirm the TV is not muted and that its volume is audible. If multiple HDMI devices are listed, select the one tied to the active display connection.

HDR is missing

Check that the TV is selected in Settings > System > Display, that the current input and cable path expose HDR, and that the mini PC’s graphics hardware supports it. Windows will not provide HDR controls for a display path that does not meet its hardware requirements. The game may also need its own HDR option enabled.

The TV image is duplicated when you wanted only the TV

Press Windows+P and choose Second screen only. If Windows repeatedly returns to another mode, disconnect the extra monitor, restart the mini PC with the TV connected and set the TV as the main display in Display settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying a cable or adapter for this setup

For the usual arrangement, search for an HDMI cable intended for connecting a mini PC to a TV, but compare the actual ports and the display mode you want before ordering. The useful question is not whether a listing uses a particular marketing label; it is whether the complete cable path supports the resolution, refresh rate and HDR features your hardware exposes.

Choose a USB-C-to-HDMI display adapter only after verifying that the mini PC’s specific USB-C port supports video output. If the specification does not state display support, assume the port may be data-only until the manufacturer confirms otherwise. For wireless use, buy only an adapter compatible with the TV’s HDMI input and follow its power requirements; suitability for gaming latency is not established by the connection instructions.

A controller is an optional peripheral rather than a requirement for connecting the mini PC. Check Windows and game compatibility for the exact model, and keep a keyboard and mouse available for setup and titles that do not accept controller input.

A reliable living-room setup checklist

  • Confirm the mini PC’s actual video-output ports and the TV’s available HDMI inputs.
  • Connect HDMI first unless the mini PC lacks a compatible HDMI output.
  • Select the matching TV input with the remote.
  • Use Windows+P and choose Second screen only, Duplicate or Extend according to your setup.
  • Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and select a mode supported by the complete connection.
  • Select the TV’s HDMI audio device in Windows if sound does not come from the television.
  • Verify the mini PC’s GPU, memory, cooling and the game’s requirements before expecting a particular level of performance.
  • Enable HDR only when Windows, the mini PC, the connection and the TV all support it, and configure HDR in the game when available.
  • Use a controller only after checking its Windows and game compatibility.
  • If something fails, test the input, cable, port and display mode separately instead of changing several variables at once.
