The safest design keeps the model and orchestration on a computer you control, uses Google OAuth with only the Gmail and Calendar permissions each task needs, and gives Home Assistant a deliberately small tool surface. A model running locally keeps inference on that machine; it does not make Gmail or Calendar local, and it does not guarantee that credentials, API clients, or remote Home Assistant connections stay inside your home network.
Build the connection as separate trust boundaries: Google APIs remain Google-hosted services, Home Assistant remains an automation system with its own bearer tokens, and the local model receives only the data and tools you explicitly pass to it.
Start with the trust boundaries
Draw the data path before installing anything. A typical arrangement has four parts:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Local model and orchestrator: Ollama and the application that decides when to call Gmail, Calendar, or Home Assistant run on a machine you administer.
- Google APIs: Gmail and Calendar data is retrieved from Google through OAuth access tokens. A local model does not change where that data is stored or processed by Google.
- Home Assistant: the home-automation server receives commands through its supported integration, REST API, or an MCP endpoint.
- Credential store: OAuth access and refresh tokens, plus Home Assistant bearer tokens, are authority-bearing secrets. They must be kept outside prompts, tool results, logs, source control, and untrusted extensions.
Home Assistant’s official Ollama integration is a direct starting point for a local conversation agent: it connects to an external Ollama server and uses local polling. That is a different network path from a cloud-hosted MCP client, which may need your Home Assistant instance reachable from the public internet.

Define the smallest useful job
Write down exactly what the assistant should do before requesting permissions. “Help with email” could mean searching messages, drafting replies, sending mail, deleting messages, or merely reporting unread counts. Each action has a different risk and should be enabled independently.
- Gmail summarizer: begin with read-only access and return summaries without sending or modifying mail.
- Calendar briefing: use event read-only or free/busy access when the assistant only prepares a schedule.
- Calendar editor: add an event read/write scope only when event creation or changes are a confirmed requirement.
- Home status assistant: expose a small set of sensors and switches and keep control disabled until read-only conversations are reliable.
Keep a separate configuration for each job when possible. A daily briefing should not inherit the ability to send mail or unlock a door simply because another workflow needs that capability.
Choose a host without making unsupported hardware promises
A dedicated mini PC is optional. An existing computer can host the model and orchestrator if it is trusted, available when needed, and able to run the particular model, context window, and workload you select. There is no universal CPU, RAM, or GPU requirement established for Ollama: practical needs vary with the model and context size. Check the current requirements for your chosen model rather than assuming that a particular computer will run it smoothly.
Whichever host you choose, apply operating-system updates, encrypt its storage where practical, restrict local accounts, and avoid exposing Ollama or your orchestration service directly to the internet. Remote administration should use an authenticated, encrypted channel, not an unauthenticated port forward.
Connect Gmail with least-privilege OAuth
Google recommends the narrowest Gmail scope that supports the concrete operation. The Gmail scope guide classifies the commonly used mailbox scopes below as restricted; applications using restricted data can face OAuth verification requirements, and Google says that storing or transmitting restricted-scope data on servers requires a security assessment when the relevant rules apply. Applicability depends on the application architecture and any available exception, so do not assume every personal script follows the same review path.
| Scope | What it enables | Security implication |
|---|---|---|
gmail.readonly |
Read Gmail data | Suitable for search, classification, and summaries when no change is required. |
gmail.metadata |
Access Gmail metadata | Use when headers or message metadata are sufficient and message bodies are unnecessary. |
gmail.send |
Send mail | Allows an external action; require an explicit confirmation step before sending. |
gmail.modify |
Read, compose, and send, plus mailbox modifications; it does not allow immediate permanent deletion | Broader than read-only. Grant only to a workflow that genuinely changes mail. |
mail.google.com |
Full mail access, including permanent deletion | The broadest option listed here; avoid it unless permanent deletion is an intentional requirement. |
Google documents the scope classifications and capabilities in Choose Gmail API scopes. Some add-on-specific scopes are non-sensitive or sensitive, but that does not make a broad mailbox scope appropriate for a local assistant.

Authorize a server-side Gmail client
- Register the application and declare only the scopes for the first feature. A read-only digest should not request write access because a future feature might need it.
- Send the user through Google consent. The client requests an authorization code for the selected scopes. Explain in the UI whether the assistant will only read messages or may send and modify them.
- Exchange the one-time code for tokens. Google’s server-side flow returns an access token and, when offline access is requested, a refresh token. The access token is used for API calls; the refresh token allows the application to obtain new access tokens after the current one expires.
- Store tokens in a protected secret store. Do not place them in the system prompt, tool output, chat history, source repository, crash reports, or ordinary application logs. Restrict file permissions and back up encrypted secrets rather than plaintext token files.
- Keep the model away from the token exchange. The orchestrator should perform OAuth and API calls, then pass the model only the minimum message fields needed for the task. A model should never be asked to construct or relay an OAuth token.
- Re-authorize incrementally. If a later feature needs sending or modification, request the additional scope at that point and explain the new capability instead of asking for every permission on day one.
The authorization-code, access-token, and refresh-token behavior is described in Using OAuth 2.0 to Access Google APIs and the Gmail server-side guide at Implement server-side authorization.

Put a human gate in front of outbound mail
Reading and drafting are reversible; sending is an external side effect. Have the orchestrator show the recipient, subject, body, and attachments for approval before it calls a send-capable operation. Reject instructions that arrive inside an email asking the model to reveal credentials or bypass the approval step. Treat message content as untrusted input, even though it came from the user’s mailbox.
Connect Google Calendar with a task-specific scope
Calendar permissions are also distinct. Google provides full calendar access, calendar read-only, free/busy, event read-only, and event read/write choices, among others. Pick the narrowest choice that matches the job.
| Calendar permission choice | Good fit |
|---|---|
| Full calendar access | Only a workflow that must manage all calendar data and settings. |
| Calendar read-only | Reporting across calendars without changing them. |
| Free/busy | Finding available time without exposing event details. |
| Event read-only | Briefings, agenda summaries, and event lookup. |
| Event read/write | Creating or changing events after the user approves those actions. |
Google explains these choices in Choose Google Calendar API scopes. Access tokens are limited to the operations and resources covered by the granted scope, so a free/busy token should not be treated as if it can read event descriptions.
Build a safe calendar workflow
- Start with a read-only briefing. Ask for event read-only or free/busy access according to whether titles and details are needed.
- Normalize data before it reaches the model. Pass only the date range, time zone, attendees, and fields required for the answer. Avoid sending unrelated historical events into the context window.
- Request write access later if needed. Use incremental authorization when a scheduling feature is introduced, rather than bundling event creation into the initial consent screen.
- Confirm every mutation. Before creating, moving, or cancelling an event, display the calendar, title, time zone, attendees, and recurrence details and require an explicit confirmation.
- Handle conflicts deterministically. If the requested time overlaps an existing event or the API returns an authorization error, stop and present the conflict; do not silently move another appointment.
Use Home Assistant’s Ollama integration as the first local path
Home Assistant’s official Ollama integration adds a conversation agent backed by an external Ollama server. It is the most straightforward supported route when the model and Home Assistant are under your control.
- Run Ollama on the controlled host. Keep the Ollama service on a private network or loopback interface where possible, and allow only the Home Assistant host or orchestrator to reach it.
- Add the Ollama integration in Home Assistant. Configure the integration to use the external Ollama server and select a model that supports the tools required for any control operation.
- Begin with conversation only. Create a configuration that can answer questions without changing entities. This gives you a baseline for prompt injection, hallucinated states, and incomplete answers.
- Expose an allowlist of entities. Home Assistant recommends exposing fewer than 25 entities while experimenting with local LLMs. This is a product recommendation, not a performance benchmark.
- Enable control only for a tool-capable model. The integration’s control feature is experimental. Smaller models may make more mistakes, so test each exposed entity and action before trusting it.
- Keep control and conversation configurations separate. Home Assistant’s documentation describes using a conversation-only agent alongside a control-enabled configuration. Use the former for general questions and reserve the latter for narrowly defined automation tasks.

Do not expose an entity merely because it is available. A temperature sensor, a lamp, and a garage-door opener have very different consequences. Start with read-only sensors and low-impact switches; add security-sensitive controls only after you have a separate confirmation mechanism.
Use the Home Assistant REST API only with a deliberate reason
The Home Assistant REST API accepts JSON and authenticates requests with an HTTP bearer token:
Authorization: Bearer TOKEN
The API documentation, including calendar entity and event routes, is at Home Assistant REST API. A long-lived token is a powerful credential. Keep it in the orchestrator’s secret store and inject it into the HTTP client at runtime; never put it in a prompt, model-visible tool description, public log, or source-control file.
The REST documentation does not establish a fine-grained per-entity permission mechanism for bearer tokens. If the intended job is limited to a small entity set, entity exposure through the Ollama integration is usually a clearer boundary than handing a general-purpose agent a broad REST token. If REST is necessary, create a dedicated Home Assistant user, restrict where the token is stored and used, and design the orchestrator so the model can call only fixed, reviewed operations.
Understand the two Home Assistant MCP directions
Home Assistant supports both an MCP client integration, which adds MCP tools to Home Assistant conversation agents, and an MCP Server integration, which exposes Home Assistant APIs to compatible external clients.
Home Assistant as an MCP client
Use this when Home Assistant’s own conversation agent needs tools supplied by another MCP server. Review every tool the remote server advertises and keep credentials for that server outside the conversation context.

Home Assistant as an MCP server
Use this when an external local or cloud client needs to call Home Assistant. The Model Context Protocol Server documentation describes OAuth 2.0 with PKCE. Developer documentation says API-specific MCP endpoints generally require an administrator token, except for the built-in Assist API. Review the exact API ID and the client’s behavior before granting access; an administrator token is much broader than a narrowly scoped tool.

Local client versus cloud client: state the network path
| Architecture choice | What stays local | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Local Ollama client with Home Assistant integration | Model inference and the Ollama polling connection can remain on your private network. | Gmail and Calendar still use Google-hosted APIs when those tools are enabled. |
| Local orchestrator calling Home Assistant REST | Inference and orchestration can run on your host. | The bearer token authorizes whatever REST operations the client can make. |
| Local or remote client calling Home Assistant MCP Server | Depends on where that client and its tools execute. | A cloud-hosted client needs Home Assistant reachable from the internet, creating a different trust model. |
If remote access is required, configure it intentionally with encrypted transport, strong authentication, narrow tool exposure, monitoring, and a revocation plan. Do not label the complete workflow “local” merely because the model weights run on a home computer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep credentials and model context separate
OAuth tokens and Home Assistant bearer tokens are credentials, not ordinary data. Use a secret manager or a protected environment provided by the host process. The orchestrator should resolve a tool call, attach the secret internally, make the API request, and return a sanitized result.
- Redact authorization headers, refresh tokens, client secrets, and full token responses from logs.
- Do not let the model choose arbitrary URLs, headers, or HTTP methods.
- Validate recipients, calendar IDs, entity IDs, and action parameters against an allowlist before making a call.
- Limit tool output to the fields needed for the answer; remove message bodies, event notes, or entity attributes that the task does not require.
- Rotate and revoke tokens when a host, account, integration, or client is retired.
Local inference reduces the number of parties receiving the prompt, but it does not make a compromised host safe. Anyone who can read the orchestrator’s token store or invoke its tools may be able to access the connected services.

- Connectivity: verify that the orchestrator can reach Ollama and that Home Assistant can reach the configured Ollama server without exposing either service publicly.
- Read-only Google access: authorize Gmail read-only and Calendar event read-only or free/busy. Test a fixed date range and a small mailbox query.
- Sanitization: inspect logs and model context to confirm that tokens, authorization headers, and unrelated private fields never appear.
- Read-only Home Assistant: expose a handful of sensors and ask factual questions. Compare answers with the Home Assistant UI.
- Low-impact control: if needed, expose a benign switch and use a tool-capable model. Check that an unknown entity or ambiguous command is rejected.
- Approval-gated writes: add Gmail sending, Calendar event write, or higher-impact Home Assistant actions one at a time, each behind a human confirmation.
- Recovery: rehearse revoking Google grants, deleting the Home Assistant token, disabling the integration, and restoring the conversation-only configuration.
Troubleshoot by boundary, not by guessing
The model answers but cannot call a tool
Check that the selected model supports tools and that the integration’s control option is enabled. A conversation-only configuration intentionally will not perform Home Assistant actions. Smaller models can also fail to format tool calls reliably; test with a supported model before changing permissions.

Google asks for a new consent screen
A new feature may require an additional scope. Compare the requested scope with the action you are adding and authorize incrementally. Do not accept a broader scope simply to eliminate the prompt.
A Gmail action is denied
Inspect the granted scope and the token used by the orchestrator. A read-only token cannot send or modify messages. If the application uses restricted Gmail data on a server, check whether Google’s verification or security-assessment requirements apply to its architecture.
Calendar details are missing
The token may have free/busy or another limited scope rather than event read-only access. Request only the additional permission needed for the missing fields, and keep the briefing’s date range narrow.
Recommended Free Tools
Home Assistant is unreachable from an MCP client
Determine where the client runs. Home Assistant documents that a cloud-hosted client needs internet reachability to the Home Assistant instance. A local Ollama connection does not imply that a remote MCP client can reach the same server. Check the intentional remote-access path, authentication, and firewall rules rather than exposing an arbitrary port.
An action affects more devices than intended
Disable control, reduce the exposed-entity allowlist, and restore the conversation-only agent. Re-enable one entity at a time and verify the model’s tool calls against the entity ID and requested service before allowing higher-impact devices.
A practical decision rule
Prefer the built-in Ollama integration for a straightforward local Home Assistant conversation agent. Choose REST when you need a narrowly coded HTTP workflow and can protect a dedicated bearer token. Choose MCP when a compatible client genuinely needs a defined set of Home Assistant tools, and review whether the endpoint requires an administrator token or can use the built-in Assist path instead.
For Gmail and Calendar, select permissions from the desired action backward: read-only for summaries, free/busy for availability, event read/write for approved scheduling, and send or modify scopes only for workflows that actually perform those changes. Keep every token outside model-visible text, expose fewer than 25 Home Assistant entities while experimenting, and document the network location of every client. That combination preserves the benefit of local inference without pretending that Google services, remote tools, or credentials have become local.
