You can connect a USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse to a PlayStation 5, then use them in an FPS only when that game’s developer has enabled keyboard-and-mouse controls. Pairing a device in PS5 settings proves that the console recognizes it; it does not guarantee that a particular game will accept the input.
This guide covers the official PS5 connection process, console settings, game-support checks, troubleshooting, and a practical setup routine for shooters. Sony’s published instructions are specifically for PS5, so do not assume the same menus or compatibility on another PlayStation generation.
What you need before connecting
Prepare the console, the two input devices, and the game you intend to play. A wired setup needs an available USB port on the PS5 and the keyboard and mouse cables. A wireless setup needs Bluetooth-capable devices with enough battery charge and their pairing instructions. Some wireless models use a USB receiver rather than Bluetooth; connect those receivers as USB devices unless the manual says otherwise.

- Device documentation: Keep the manual available for pairing mode, receiver use, and compatibility information.
- Game support information: Check the FPS’s controls, accessibility, or support page before spending time changing settings.
Sony cautions that not every keyboard or mouse is compatible with PS5. A device can still appear in the Bluetooth search results even when it is not compatible, so an entry in the list is not a compatibility certificate.

Can I connect a keyboard and mouse with PS5?
Yes. PS5 supports USB and Bluetooth keyboards and mice at the system level. Whether they work during a match is a separate decision made by the game’s developer. Sony made that distinction in its “PS5: The Ultimate FAQ,” published November 9, 2020: “Yes, USB and Bluetooth keyboards and mice are supported at a system level, though game developers will decide whether to support at a game level.”
Use two checks:
- Confirm that the peripheral itself works with the PS5.
- Confirm that the specific FPS supports keyboard and mouse input in gameplay.
If either check fails, changing sensitivity, key bindings, or pairing settings will not make the game accept the controls.
Option 1: Connect USB devices
Step 1: Connect the keyboard
Plug the keyboard’s USB cable into an available USB port on the PS5. If the keyboard has a detachable cable, connect the cable firmly at both ends. Avoid adding an unpowered hub while diagnosing a connection; connect directly to the console first so there is one fewer possible failure point.
Step 2: Connect the mouse
Plug the mouse into another USB port. If the mouse uses a USB receiver, insert that receiver and switch the mouse on according to its manual. A wired keyboard and wired mouse should normally be ready for console-level text entry and pointer use as soon as the PS5 recognizes them.
Step 3: Confirm basic recognition
Use a PS5 text-entry field, search box, or settings screen to test typing and pointer movement. This test only confirms system recognition. Before launching a match, consult the FPS’s own control or support information for its gameplay policy.

When USB connection is the better choice
- Choose USB while troubleshooting because it avoids Bluetooth pairing, battery, and radio-interference variables.
- Use the direct connection to determine whether a problem belongs to the device, the console, or the game’s input policy.
- If a wired device works in PS5 menus but not in a match, the next check is the game’s support status rather than the cable.
Option 2: Pair Bluetooth devices
Step 1: Put the device into pairing mode
Turn on the keyboard or mouse and activate Bluetooth pairing mode. The button combination differs by model, so follow the device manual. Keep the device close to the PS5 during the first pairing attempt and make sure it is not already connected to a computer, tablet, or phone.
Step 2: Open the PS5 Bluetooth menu
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Accessories.
- Choose General.
- Open Bluetooth Accessories.
The console searches for nearby Bluetooth devices. Select the keyboard or mouse when its name appears.
Step 3: Interpret the search results correctly
Sony notes that devices incompatible with PS5 may still appear in the search list. If selection fails, pairing never completes, or the device connects but does not respond, treat that as a compatibility or device-state problem rather than proof that the PS5 supports the model.
Step 4: Reconnect from Registered Accessories
After successful pairing, the device is listed under Registered Accessories. Sony says it should reconnect automatically when both the PS5 and the device are switched on. If it does not, open the registered-device list, select the keyboard or mouse, and choose Connect.
Pair one device at a time when troubleshooting
If you are pairing both peripherals for the first time, complete the keyboard first and then the mouse. This makes it clear which device produced an error and avoids confusing two similarly named entries. Once each device is registered, test them separately in a PS5 text field or menu.

Adjust keyboard and mouse settings on PS5
Keyboard language and repeat behavior
Open Settings > Accessories > Other Accessories. Select the keyboard to choose its language and adjust key-repeat delay and key-repeat rate. The language setting affects how the PS5 interprets typed characters; repeat controls affect how quickly a held key generates repeated input in supported system fields.

Mouse handedness and pointer speed
In the same Other Accessories area, select the mouse to choose left- or right-handed use and adjust pointer speed. Handedness changes the primary-button arrangement for console use. Pointer speed changes cursor movement in PS5 interfaces; an FPS may expose its own look or aim controls separately.
Reach the settings from the control center
Sony also makes these accessory settings available through Accessories in the control center. The exact route is useful when you are already in a game and need to change a console-level option without navigating back through the full home screen.
Verify that the FPS supports keyboard and mouse controls
Do this check before interpreting a nonresponsive mouse or keyboard as a hardware failure. Look in the game’s control settings, accessibility menu, official support documentation, or patch notes for an explicit keyboard-and-mouse statement. A game may support the devices in menus but not during gameplay, or it may expose only selected functions.
What a successful check looks like
- The game lists keyboard keys or mouse actions in its control settings.
- The control menu allows you to select keyboard-and-mouse input or change bindings.
- The developer’s support information explicitly identifies the game version or platform as supporting these controls.
What a failed check looks like
- The devices work in PS5 menus but every in-game action remains assigned to a controller.
- The game offers no keyboard or mouse entries anywhere in its control settings.
- The developer states that keyboard and mouse are unavailable on the PlayStation version.
Do not infer support from another platform. A title can offer keyboard and mouse on a computer while omitting the feature from its console edition. The individual developer controls that decision.

Recommended setup sequence for an FPS
- Check the game’s policy first. Find the title’s current PlayStation control information and confirm game-level support.
- Start with USB if possible. Connect the keyboard and mouse directly to the PS5 and test them in a text field or menu.
- Switch to Bluetooth only after the basic test works. Pair each wireless device from Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories.
- Set console options. Choose keyboard language, repeat behavior, mouse handedness, and pointer speed in Settings > Accessories > Other Accessories.
- Open the FPS control menu. Confirm that the game detects keyboard-and-mouse input before entering a competitive match.
- Bind only after detection. Change keys or actions in the game’s own control screen once the input method is visible there.
- Test in a low-risk environment. Use a training area, tutorial, or private session if the game provides one, then verify movement, aiming, firing, and menu navigation.
This order isolates the three layers involved: physical connection, PS5 system recognition, and game-level support.

The device does not appear over Bluetooth
- Put the keyboard or mouse back into pairing mode using its manual; being switched on is not always the same as being discoverable.
- Disconnect it from other nearby devices that may have claimed the Bluetooth connection.
- Move it closer to the PS5 and retry the scan.
- Restart the device and repeat Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories.
- If it appears but cannot pair, remember that Sony says incompatible devices can still be listed.
The device paired but does not reconnect
Turn on both the PS5 and the peripheral, then open Registered Accessories and select the device. Choose Connect if automatic reconnection did not occur. If the problem repeats, remove competing connections on the peripheral and pair it again according to the manual.
The keyboard works but the mouse does not
Test the mouse by itself in PS5 menus. Check its power switch, battery, cable, or USB receiver, depending on the model. For Bluetooth, verify that you selected the mouse entry rather than a second keyboard profile. If the cursor works in system screens but not inside the FPS, perform the game’s support check rather than repeatedly pairing the mouse.
The mouse works but the keyboard does not
Confirm the selected keyboard language and test typing in a PS5 text field. For Bluetooth models, re-enter pairing mode and reconnect from the registered list. For USB models, reseat the cable and try another console port. A keyboard that types in menus but produces no movement or action in a game is usually facing the game’s input policy, not a PS5 language setting.

Neither device works in the FPS
Separate the diagnosis into layers. First, test each peripheral in PS5 menus. Second, confirm the game’s documentation explicitly supports keyboard and mouse on PlayStation. Third, inspect the game’s control settings for an input selector or bindings. If system recognition succeeds and the game offers no keyboard-and-mouse controls, there may be no console setting that can enable the feature.

A Bluetooth device appears but pairing fails
Do not keep selecting the same entry indefinitely. Cancel the attempt, power-cycle the peripheral, clear its active connection to another device, and retry pairing mode. If the PS5 continues to list it without completing registration, consult the peripheral manual and compatibility information; appearance in the scan is not a guarantee of support.
Compatibility and buying guidance
The relevant hardware categories are USB keyboards, USB mice, Bluetooth keyboards, and Bluetooth mice. Sony’s instructions do not provide a complete compatibility matrix or guarantee a particular model. Before buying, read the device manual for its connection method and confirm that the manufacturer identifies PS5 compatibility where applicable.

Console recognition should not be treated as a promise of competitive performance or game support. The safest purchase decision is one based on the peripheral’s documented PS5 compatibility and the chosen FPS’s documented input support.

The published setup page used for these steps is for PS5. It does not establish a complete procedure for PS4 or older PlayStation hardware, nor does it list every compatible peripheral or FPS. If you are using another generation, locate that console’s current support documentation instead of assuming the PS5 menu path will be present.
Likewise, there is no universal list in these instructions that can certify every FPS. Check the title you actually plan to play, because support is controlled at the game level and can differ between editions or platforms.
