To play phone games on a larger screen, first verify that your exact phone model can output video over USB-C. Then connect it to the display with a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter and HDMI cable, or with a video-capable USB-C cable to a compatible USB-C monitor. Select the correct display input, pair a controller supported by your phone, and confirm that the game accepts gamepad input. A USB-C socket alone does not prove that a phone supports video output.
What you need before connecting anything
This setup has four independent compatibility checks. The phone must be able to send a video signal; the cable or adapter must carry that signal; the TV or monitor must accept it; and the game must recognize controller input. A failure at any one layer can make a working-looking setup unusable.
- Phone: Identify the exact model and check its manufacturer’s documentation for wired external-display output. Do not infer video support from the shape of a USB-C connector.
- Display: Check whether the TV or monitor has an available HDMI input or a USB-C input that accepts video, not merely USB data or charging.
- Video accessory: Choose an adapter or cable specified for the required signal. A generic charging cable is not enough.
- Controller: Use a gamepad supported by the phone’s operating system and connection method, then verify support inside the individual game.
- Power: Decide whether the phone must charge while connected or whether you need wired USB peripherals. A powered hub may help, but compatibility with the phone and adapter must be confirmed.
A simple compatibility decision
Start with the phone, not the accessory. If the manufacturer’s specifications do not mention external-display, DisplayPort, HDMI, desktop-mode or an equivalent feature, stop before buying a cable. Next, match the output to the display: HDMI output needs an HDMI input, while a direct USB-C connection needs a monitor whose USB-C port accepts video. Finally, check the game. A phone can mirror perfectly and still provide no usable gamepad controls if the app has no controller support.

There is usually no universal adapter that works with every USB-C phone. The same connector can carry charging and data on one model but video on another. Search and shop using the complete model name, and read the phone, adapter and display specifications together.

Choose the right display connection
| Connection | What it requires | Advantages | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB-C to HDMI | Phone with wired video output, compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable, HDMI input on the TV or monitor | Works with the HDMI inputs found on most televisions and many monitors | The adapter must support the phone’s video mode; USB-C on the phone does not guarantee compatibility |
| Direct USB-C display | Phone that supports video over USB-C, monitor with a video-capable USB-C input, cable that carries video | One cable can provide the display connection, and some monitors can provide power | Both the phone and monitor must support compatible display protocols and power behavior |
| Wireless display | Phone and television or receiver with compatible wireless-display features | No cable between the phone and display | Support varies by device; the available documentation does not establish that every combination is suitable for responsive gaming |
When an HDMI adapter is the practical choice
Use HDMI when the television or monitor has an HDMI input and your phone’s support page specifies wired video output. Samsung’s adapter guidance describes USB-C-to-HDMI connections for compatible Galaxy devices, while Apple’s display instructions describe USB-C-to-HDMI adapters or cables for supported USB-C iPhone models. In either case, compatibility is model-dependent.
An adapter is useful when the display is across the room or has no USB-C video input. Some products combine the USB-C plug and HDMI connector in one cable; others require a separate HDMI cable. Either arrangement can work only if the product’s specifications match the phone’s output and the display’s input. Do not confuse an HDMI-to-USB-C cable intended to connect a source in the opposite direction with a USB-C phone output accessory.
When a direct USB-C monitor connection makes sense
A direct connection is possible only when the phone can output video through USB-C and the monitor accepts that signal. Google Pixel Help describes wired projection with DisplayPort support or an HDMI-to-USB-C arrangement, depending on the display and cable. A USB-C monitor port used only for charging or USB data will not display the phone’s screen.
Direct USB-C can reduce the number of separate pieces, but it creates a stricter matching requirement. The cable must be video-capable, the monitor must accept the phone’s display protocol, and any power delivered by the monitor must be supported by the phone. If documentation is unclear, an HDMI path with a clearly specified adapter may be easier to test.
Wireless display is a separate option
Some phones and televisions have wireless-display functions, but the names and requirements vary by platform. You need compatible features on both ends, and the receiver may be built into the TV or supplied by another device. Because the documented wired methods identify the physical signal path, they are easier to verify. Wireless setup also adds receiver, pairing and network variables. Use it only when your specific devices support it and the controls feel acceptable in the game; no universal wireless gaming result is established here.
Step-by-step: connect the phone to a TV or monitor
- Record the exact phone model. Open the phone’s About screen or retail documentation and note the complete model name, not just the product family.
- Verify wired display support. Read the manufacturer’s current support page for that exact model. Look specifically for external-display, DisplayPort, HDMI, desktop-mode or Smart Connect support. If the documentation does not state video output, do not assume it exists.
- Inspect the display inputs. Locate an unused HDMI input, or confirm that the monitor’s USB-C input accepts video. Note the input number if the display has several.
- Select an appropriate cable or adapter. For HDMI, use a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable and an HDMI cable if the adapter does not include one. For a USB-C monitor, use a cable explicitly rated for video. If charging passthrough is important, choose a hub or adapter that documents that function and verify it works with the phone.
- Connect the hardware. Attach the USB-C end to the phone, connect HDMI to the adapter and display, or connect the video-capable USB-C cable directly to the monitor. Keep the phone unlocked during initial detection if the manufacturer requests it.
- Choose the display input. Use the TV or monitor’s Input/Source control to select the HDMI port or USB-C input you used. A correct cable on the wrong input produces a blank screen.
- Accept the phone’s display prompt. Depending on the platform, choose mirroring or a supported desktop-style display mode. Some phones begin mirroring automatically; others require a notification or settings action.
- Set a comfortable phone position. Place the phone where its connector is not under strain. If the game uses touch controls for menus, keep the phone accessible even after the picture appears on the larger screen.
- Test before arranging the whole setup. Display the home screen first, then open the game. This separates a video-connection problem from a game-specific problem and avoids troubleshooting several new variables at once.
Platform-specific behavior and requirements
Samsung Galaxy phones
Samsung documents two relevant paths for compatible Galaxy devices. Its gaming guidance says an Xbox controller or another compatible Bluetooth controller can be used with a Galaxy phone. Its DeX instructions describe connecting a supported Galaxy to an HDMI monitor or TV with a DeX cable, while separate adapter guidance covers USB-C-to-HDMI connections. These instructions do not mean every Galaxy model supports DeX or wired video output; check the exact model’s documentation.
On a supported DeX phone, the external display may show Samsung’s desktop-style interface rather than a simple duplicate of the handset. That can change how you launch a game and where controls appear. If the phone offers both mirroring and DeX, select the mode that matches how you want to use the screen, then verify the game window and controller input separately.

Google Pixel phones
Google Pixel Help describes using a cable to mirror a Pixel screen to an external monitor or TV. The documented arrangement requires DisplayPort support or an HDMI-to-USB-C cable, depending on the equipment. Confirm that the instructions apply to your Pixel model and installed software before purchasing an adapter.
Do not treat a Pixel USB-C port as proof that every cable will work. Check whether the display path is DisplayPort-based or HDMI-based and buy the corresponding video-capable cable or adapter. If the phone’s support page limits the feature to particular models or software versions, those limits apply even when the monitor accepts USB-C input.
USB-C iPhone models
Apple’s external-display documentation lists iPhone 17 models except iPhone 17e, iPhone 16 models except iPhone 16e, and iPhone 15 models as supporting external displays through USB-C. It states that USB-C-to-HDMI adapters or cables supporting HDMI 2.0 can output up to 4K at 60 Hz, subject to the phone, adapter and display. USB-C displays use DisplayPort with the supported cable requirements. Model lists and specifications can change, so check Apple’s current page before buying hardware.
On supported iPhones, the external screen normally mirrors the phone. Apple also notes that some applications provide a second-screen experience instead of simple mirroring. That behavior is controlled by the application, not by the HDMI cable. An app’s second-screen design can therefore look different from the phone display even though the connection is working correctly.

Motorola’s Smart Connect documentation applies only to supported phones. It describes using a video-capable USB 3.1 USB-C cable or a USB-C-to-HDMI cable. Do not generalize Smart Connect or its cable requirements to every Motorola phone; verify support for the exact device.
Smart Connect is Motorola’s documented feature for the supported-device group, not a guarantee attached to every USB-C Motorola handset. Confirm the phone’s Smart Connect eligibility and the required cable standard before selecting an adapter.
Pair and test a controller
Bluetooth pairing
- Charge the controller and put it into Bluetooth-pairing mode according to its instructions.
- On the phone, open Bluetooth settings and select the controller when it appears.
- Approve the pairing request and wait until the phone shows a connected status.
- Launch the game and open its controller, gamepad or input settings. Move a stick or press a button to verify that the game receives input.
A controller can pair successfully with the operating system while a particular game ignores it. Check the game’s own support information and settings rather than treating a successful Bluetooth connection as proof of compatibility. Some games support only selected controller types or expose controls after a setting is enabled.

- ONE-WAY VIDEO & AUDIO OUTPUT: This adapter sends video and audio from your USB-C device to an HDMI display. It does not support charging, and it is not designed for HDMI-to-USB-C direction.
- 4K@60Hz USB-C TO HDMI ADAPTER CABLE: Get clear 4K picture at 60Hz from a compatible USB-C laptop or tablet. It also works with older HDMI 1.4, 1.3 and 1.2 screens.

- EXTEND YOUR REACH: Going from USB-C male to HDMI female lets you keep using the HDMI cable you already have, and place your laptop or phone where you want it.
Wired controller connections
Some controllers can connect by USB-C. The phone must support the controller’s USB connection, and the cable must carry data rather than power only. A wired connection may also compete with the phone’s single USB-C port, making charging or video passthrough dependent on a compatible hub.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a first test, pair the controller before adding a hub or other USB devices. Once the game responds, add charging or peripherals one at a time. This makes it clear whether a later failure comes from the controller, the hub, or the display connection.
Examples documented by manufacturers
Samsung names Xbox and other compatible Bluetooth controllers for Galaxy phones. PlayStation states that the DualSense Edge can connect to Android and iOS devices by USB-C or Bluetooth, while warning that feature availability depends on device and software support. This example demonstrates connection methods; it does not establish that every mobile game recognizes that controller or exposes all of its features.
A controller’s advanced functions can be less portable than basic buttons and sticks. Treat the documented Android or iOS connection as evidence that pairing is possible, not as a promise that every game supports extra features.
Mirroring versus a desktop-style interface
Most wired setups show the phone’s screen on the television or monitor. A few supported platforms offer a separate interface. Samsung DeX can present its own desktop-style environment on a connected display for compatible devices, while the phone remains available as a separate control surface. On iPhone, an app may use the external display as a second screen instead of duplicating the phone display. Before troubleshooting a game, determine whether you are seeing a mirror or an application-specific external-display mode.
Mode differences affect where you open the game and what remains visible on the handset. In a mirror, actions on the phone generally appear on the large display. In a desktop or second-screen mode, the display may have its own window or interface. Neither mode changes the requirement that the game itself accept controller input.
What to do if the display is blank
There is no universal fix for every phone, adapter and display combination, but the following order isolates the usual compatibility points without assuming a particular brand or model.

- Recheck the phone model. Confirm that the exact model, not merely its product line, supports wired video output.
- Check the cable specification. Replace a charging-only USB-C cable with one that explicitly supports video. For HDMI, verify that the adapter is intended for the phone’s output standard.
- Verify the display input. Select the precise HDMI port or USB-C input in use. Test another input only after confirming the first selection.
- Remove extra equipment. Temporarily disconnect hubs, extension cables and capture devices. Establish a direct phone-to-adapter-to-display path first.
- Confirm power needs. Some adapters or hubs require external power for charging passthrough or stable operation. Use the power arrangement specified by the phone and adapter documentation.
- Reconnect in a clean sequence. Disconnect the cable, unlock the phone, attach the adapter, connect the display, select its input, and respond to any phone prompt.
- Check software and mode support. Install the phone’s available system updates and verify that the manufacturer’s display mode applies to your software version.
- Test a known-simple screen. Check whether the home screen appears before opening a game. If the home screen works but the game does not, investigate the game’s display or controller behavior rather than replacing the cable immediately.
If these checks do not produce an image, the phone may not support wired output, or the adapter and display may use incompatible protocols. The official device pages do not provide a single compatibility matrix covering every third-party accessory.
Using a hub for charging and peripherals
A hub is optional, not a baseline requirement. It is useful when the phone must charge during a long session or when you want to attach a wired controller, keyboard or other USB device while video is connected. Before buying one, verify all of the following:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- The phone supports video while using the hub.
- The hub passes the required HDMI or USB-C display signal.
- Power passthrough is supported at the phone’s required level.
- The controller or other peripheral is recognized through the hub.
- The display resolution and refresh requirements are supported by the complete chain.
If any item is undocumented, treat the hub as experimental rather than guaranteed. A direct adapter is the simpler diagnostic path. A hub can also add another connection and power dependency, so it should solve a specific need rather than be assumed necessary for every setup.
Wireless casting: when to consider it
Some phones and televisions support wireless display features, but availability depends on both devices and their software. The documented wired methods are easier to verify because the signal path and input are explicit. Wireless casting can introduce additional variables such as receiver support, pairing and network conditions. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal wireless setup or guarantee the responsiveness required for every game, so use it only when your specific phone and TV documentation supports it and the resulting controls feel acceptable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Buying checklist
- Search for an accessory using the complete model name, such as
USB-C to HDMI adapter for [exact phone model], rather than assuming one adapter works with every USB-C phone. - Confirm that the listing states video output, not only charging or data transfer.
- Check whether HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort or another required standard is specified by the phone’s documentation.
- Decide whether you need charging passthrough or additional USB ports before choosing a hub.
- Pair the controller with the phone’s operating system and confirm game-level support before relying on it.
- Keep receipts or a return option when compatibility is not explicitly documented; no third-party adapter is established as universal by the manufacturer pages cited above.
The least expensive-looking accessory is not necessarily the right one if it omits video support or passthrough details. A direct cable may be all you need, while a hub is an additional purchase justified only by charging or peripheral requirements. Compatibility is the deciding specification, not the connector name alone.
Limits you should expect
Official compatibility instructions establish how particular devices are intended to connect, but they do not test every phone-adapter-display-controller chain. They also do not provide a universal list of games with gamepad support, latency measurements, frame-rate comparisons or image-quality tests for every accessory. Treat resolution figures, model lists and feature availability as conditional on the stated phone, cable, adapter, display and software combination.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect my phone to a TV with USB-C?
Only if the exact phone supports wired video output and the TV connection is compatible. Use a video-capable USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable for an HDMI input, or a video-capable USB-C cable for a monitor that accepts USB-C video. A USB-C charging port by itself does not prove that video will work.

Do I need a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter?
You need one when the phone outputs video over USB-C and the TV or monitor accepts HDMI, unless a compatible combined cable performs the same conversion. Check the phone model, adapter specification and display input together; a generic charging cable is insufficient.
Why is my phone not showing on my monitor?
Check, in order, the exact phone model’s wired-video support, the cable’s video capability, the adapter’s compatibility, the monitor input selection and any required power. Remove hubs and extensions for the first test. If the phone’s documentation does not confirm video output, the port may support charging and data only.
Will a Bluetooth controller work with phone games?
It may pair with the phone but still fail in a particular game. Use a controller supported by the phone’s operating system, then open the game’s controller settings and test buttons and sticks. Samsung documents compatible Bluetooth controllers, including Xbox controllers, for supported Galaxy phones; PlayStation documents DualSense Edge connections to Android and iOS, with feature support dependent on the device and software.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does the phone always mirror its screen?
Usually a wired connection mirrors the phone, but behavior depends on the platform and app. Samsung DeX can provide a desktop-style interface on supported Galaxy devices, and Apple notes that some apps use a second-screen experience. Determine the active mode before diagnosing a display problem.
Can I charge the phone and use a controller while it is connected to HDMI?
Sometimes, but it requires a compatible hub or adapter with power passthrough and support for the phone’s video signal and USB peripherals. Verify those functions for the exact phone and accessory. A direct adapter is the simplest setup when charging or extra peripherals are not required.
Is wireless casting suitable for gaming?
Some phone and TV combinations support it, but device support and network conditions vary. The documented wired paths are easier to verify, and the available manufacturer instructions do not guarantee a wireless setup will feel responsive in every game.
The Bottom Line
The reliable route is model-first: verify wired video output, use a video-rated USB-C adapter or cable matched to the display, select the correct input, then pair a supported controller and test it inside the game. If any link in that chain is unsupported, changing the controller or HDMI input alone will not solve the problem.
