To get a monitor’s advertised 144 Hz, 165 Hz, 240 Hz or higher mode, every part of the signal chain must support the same resolution and refresh rate: the monitor input, cable, PC or console output, and software settings. Connect the source directly to the documented input, select that input, then choose the mode in Windows or the console’s video settings. A number printed on the monitor box is a capability, not a guarantee that every port, resolution, game or console can use it.
What the refresh-rate number actually means
Microsoft defines refresh rate as “the number of times per second the image refreshes on the screen.” A 144 Hz display can refresh up to 144 times per second, but that does not mean every game renders 144 frames per second. Refresh rate is the display’s output mode; frame rate is how quickly the PC or console produces new frames. A game running at 90 frames per second on a monitor set to 144 Hz is still limited to 90 new frames per second, although the display remains capable of refreshing at its selected rate.
The headline figure can apply only to a particular input and resolution. For example, a monitor may reach its maximum over DisplayPort but offer a lower limit over one HDMI input, or support 240 Hz at 1080p but not at 1440p. Firmware, an input-version toggle, an adapter, a dock or a splitter can also change which timings are available. Read the exact model’s manual and timing table rather than assuming that all sockets share the largest number.
Variable refresh rate (VRR) is separate again. VRR lets the display adjust its refresh timing within a documented range to follow changing frame rates. It can reduce tearing when a game’s output fluctuates, but it does not increase the game’s maximum frame rate or override the limits of the console, graphics card or selected resolution.

Check compatibility before you plug anything in
Write down the monitor’s exact model number, the source device, the target resolution and the target refresh rate. Then confirm the combination in the monitor’s manual, specification page or timing table.
| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Monitor input | Which HDMI or DisplayPort socket supports the desired resolution-and-Hz combination | Inputs on the same monitor can have different bandwidth or feature limits. |
| Source output | The graphics-card port on a PC, or the HDMI output on a console | The source must be able to generate the selected mode. |
| Resolution | The exact resolution at which the advertised rate is specified | A higher resolution may reduce the maximum available rate. |
| Cable and path | A direct cable and a specification supported by both endpoints | An adapter, dock, splitter or unsuitable cable can remove modes. |
| Monitor settings | Input/version, overclock or bandwidth options documented for the model | Some displays require a menu setting before a high-rate mode appears. |
| Software | Current graphics drivers, console software and monitor firmware where applicable | Updates can add or correct mode detection, but they cannot exceed hardware limits. |
For a desktop PC with a discrete graphics card, plan to connect the monitor to the card’s output, not an unused motherboard video socket. The motherboard connector may be wired to integrated graphics and can bypass the card that actually renders the game.
Connect a gaming monitor to a Windows PC
- Locate the model documentation. Find the monitor’s model number on its rear label or on-screen information page. Identify the input listed for your intended resolution and refresh rate. Note any requirement to enable a DisplayPort or HDMI version in the monitor menu.
- Power the display. Connect the monitor’s power supply, switch it on and leave it on while making the video connection.
- Use the correct source port. Connect the cable from the graphics card’s output to the monitor input identified in the manual. Make the connection directly for the initial test; bypass a dock, KVM, splitter, receiver and adapter.
- Select the input. Open the monitor’s on-screen menu and choose the HDMI or DisplayPort input you used. Automatic input detection is not identical across brands, so confirm the selected source rather than assuming it changed.
- Open Windows’ refresh controls. Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Microsoft’s instructions are documented at Change the refresh rate on your monitor in Windows.
- Choose the gaming monitor. If more than one display is attached, select the monitor by model name in the display selector before changing anything. Changing the rate for another screen will not affect the gaming monitor.
- Set the intended mode. Review the current resolution and refresh rate, then choose the highest rate offered for that resolution. Windows only lists combinations it believes the connected display and hardware support. A star beside an entry can indicate that the rate does not support the current resolution; choosing it may change the resolution, so recheck both values after applying it.
- Confirm the signal. Open the monitor’s information or signal-status page, if the model provides one, and compare the received resolution and rate with Windows’ Advanced display page. The wording and location of this status page differ by manufacturer.
Windows does not necessarily select the monitor’s maximum rate automatically. After a driver update, cable change or display reconnection, revisit Advanced display and verify the value instead of relying on the monitor’s label.
When the desired rate is not listed in Windows
- Confirm that the intended monitor is selected and that the resolution is the one used in the monitor’s timing table.
- Check the exact input rather than another socket that looks identical.
- Inspect the monitor menu for a documented input-version or bandwidth setting.
- Install the current graphics driver supplied for your GPU and restart Windows.
- Temporarily disconnect other monitors and remove docks, adapters, splitters and receivers to isolate the direct path.
- Try the cable type and specification documented for that mode. A cable label alone does not prove that the graphics card, monitor input and resolution support the combination.
Only apply a model-specific workaround when the monitor maker documents it. A custom resolution created in a graphics utility cannot make an input or cable carry more bandwidth than it physically supports.

Connect a gaming monitor to a PS5
- Use a supported HDMI input. PlayStation’s setup example connects the PS5 HDMI output to either of the monitor’s supported HDMI inputs. Follow the exact input and resolution limits in your monitor manual. The official connection guide is How to connect a gaming monitor to PS5 consoles.
- Start with the supplied cable. PlayStation tells owners to use the HDMI cable included with the PS5 in its monitor setup example. If you later substitute a cable, match the specification required by the monitor and the desired mode.
- Select the monitor input. Turn on the display, choose the HDMI socket used by the console and wait for the PS5 signal.
- Review PS5 video output. On the console, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Check the resolution, 120 Hz output and VRR-related options that the console reports for the connected display. PlayStation’s resolution guide is available at How to change PS5 console resolution.
- Use a compatible game mode. A PS5 and monitor can negotiate a high-refresh output, but a game must offer a mode that uses it. The monitor’s maximum number does not make every title render at that rate.
- Verify the received mode. Use the monitor’s signal-information page where available and compare it with the PS5 video-output information. Do not assume that an on-screen “120 Hz” option means every game is currently producing 120 frames per second.
When the display provides an HDMI 2.1 input, PlayStation recommends using that capable port for the relevant high-bandwidth configuration. HDMI 2.1 is not universally required: a lower-bandwidth resolution-and-refresh combination may work through another HDMI version if both devices document support for it.
Other consoles
Use the console maker’s current video or display settings and the monitor’s compatibility table. The available mode depends on the exact console generation, game output mode, resolution and monitor input. There is no single verified menu sequence that applies to every console model, so avoid treating a PC monitor’s 240 Hz rating as evidence that a console can use 240 Hz.
Choosing DisplayPort, HDMI and a cable
The connector shape is only part of the specification. The source port, monitor input, cable and selected resolution must all support the same signaling mode.

Sony’s Gaming Monitor FAQ recommends DisplayPort for a PC and an HDMI 2.1-compatible cable for an HDMI terminal in the situations covered by that guidance. For its INZONE M10S monitor, Sony names an HDMI 2.1- or DisplayPort 2.1-compatible cable for a computer and HDMI 2.1 for compatible consoles in Connecting multiple devices to the INZONE M10S gaming monitor. Those are manufacturer recommendations for the documented devices, not a universal rule that every high-refresh setup needs HDMI 2.1.

Before buying a replacement cable, test the cable already supplied with the monitor, GPU or console if its specification matches the manual. Replace it only after confirming that the current cable or an intermediate device is the limiting part of the chain. A new cable cannot unlock a mode that the monitor input or source does not support.
How to verify that the advertised rate is active
- Read the monitor’s on-screen signal or information page and record the received resolution and refresh rate.
- On Windows, check Settings > System > Display > Advanced display with the gaming monitor selected.
- On a PS5, review Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and the game’s own performance or high-frame-rate option.
- Run a title that explicitly offers a high-refresh or performance mode. The test confirms that the title can request such a mode; it does not prove that every title will render at the same frame rate.
Do not infer the active mode from the monitor’s product name alone. The received signal is the useful evidence because it reflects the currently selected input, resolution, source and cable path.

1. The wrong display or input is selected
On Windows, return to Advanced display and select the gaming monitor rather than another attached screen. On the monitor, select the HDMI or DisplayPort socket that the manual lists for the target mode. On a desktop PC, make sure the cable is in the discrete graphics card output when one is installed.

3. The resolution limits the rate
Return to the monitor’s timing table and test the advertised rate at the documented resolution. A display might support 165 Hz at one resolution but only 60 or 120 Hz at another. Do not force the headline rate while ignoring a resolution change that makes text or games unsuitable.
4. The cable or an intermediate device is limiting the path
Connect the source directly to the monitor with the cable type specified for the mode. Remove adapters, docks, splitters, receivers and KVMs temporarily. If the direct connection restores the rate, reintroduce each device only if its documentation lists the exact resolution, refresh rate and VRR combination. Sony’s guidance also stresses matching DisplayPort version settings to the PC and cable on the INZONE M10S.
5. A monitor input-version setting is off
Some displays expose separate bandwidth or version choices for HDMI or DisplayPort. Compare the current menu value with the model manual, change only the documented setting and reconnect the signal if requested. Firmware-dependent behavior varies by model.

7. Drivers or system software need attention
Install the current graphics driver for the PC’s GPU or the current console system update, restart, then repeat the direct-connection test. If a mode disappears after an update, return to the monitor’s documented settings and test another supported cable path before creating custom timings.
Compare two possible setups instead of comparing Hz numbers
When deciding between inputs or between a PC and console, compare the complete mode, not the largest number printed on the monitor.
| Decision factor | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Exact mode | What resolution and refresh rate does each input actually support? |
| Source capability | Can the GPU or console output that mode, and can the game select it? |
| Cable requirement | Which cable specification is required, and is a suitable cable already included? |
| Console timings | Does the monitor list the console’s expected resolution, 120 Hz and HDR or VRR timing? |
| VRR range | What refresh-rate range does the monitor document, and does the source support the same VRR standard? |
| Signal path | Can the setup remain direct, or does it depend on an adapter, dock or splitter with its own limits? |
A PC monitor may advertise rates above the output modes available from a console. That is normal: the monitor’s capability does not expand the console’s hardware or a game’s performance mode. Use the exact compatibility information for your console and monitor rather than converting a PC specification into a console promise.

When to change hardware
Change hardware only after the monitor manual, source settings and direct-connection test identify a limitation. A compatible DisplayPort cable is a sensible PC replacement when the existing cable is damaged, lacks the documented specification or fails during a direct test. A compatible HDMI cable may be appropriate for a console when the monitor’s required HDMI mode is higher than the supplied cable supports. Match both ends and the target resolution-and-refresh combination; no cable purchase can compensate for an unsupported monitor input, GPU output or console mode.
Bottom line
Getting 144 Hz, 165 Hz or 240 Hz is a verification process: use the documented monitor input, connect the correct source directly, select the mode in Windows or the console, and confirm the received signal on the monitor. If the display remains at 60 Hz, check the selected resolution and input first, then the cable path, monitor version settings, drivers and finally the game or console mode. The monitor’s maximum refresh-rate label describes what it can do under specified conditions—not what every source and game will automatically deliver.
