You can connect a PlayStation 5 DualSense controller to a Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11 PC with a USB-C cable or Bluetooth. USB is the better choice when you want the complete feature set: Sony says PC haptic feedback requires a wired USB connection, and adaptive triggers may also require USB in some games. Bluetooth is convenient for ordinary controller input, but every advanced feature still depends on support from the individual game.
After Windows detects the controller, check the game’s own controller notes. On Steam, the store page’s Full Controller Support or Partial Controller Support label indicates how extensively a title is designed to work with a controller. A connection by itself does not guarantee adaptive triggers, haptics, the built-in microphone, speaker, or headset jack will function.
What you need before connecting a DualSense
- A DualSense wireless controller with enough charge to complete pairing or a USB-C cable for a wired connection.
- A PC running Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11. Sony lists both operating systems as supporting DualSense USB and Bluetooth connections.
- For Bluetooth, a working Bluetooth adapter in the PC. Laptops commonly include one; a desktop may need a compatible adapter.
- For wired play, a USB-C cable that supports data as well as charging. Connect it directly to the PC rather than through an unpowered hub if Windows does not detect the controller.
- The game’s controller-support information. PlayStation PC releases do not all implement the same DualSense features.
Keep the controller close to the PC during initial Bluetooth pairing. If its player indicator is lit, hold the PS button until the controller turns off before starting the pairing sequence.

USB versus Bluetooth: which connection should you use?
| Connection | Setup | Advantages | Important limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB-C | Plug the controller into the PC with a USB-C cable. | Simple, stable, no wireless pairing, and the connection Sony requires for PC haptic feedback. | A cable runs from the controller to the PC. Adaptive triggers may still depend on game support and can require USB in selected titles. |
| Bluetooth | Put the controller in pairing mode, then select it in Windows Bluetooth settings. | No cable while playing and quick reconnection after the first pairing. | Advanced features are not guaranteed. Sony specifies USB for PC haptic feedback, and a DualSense can be paired with only one device at a time. |
Use USB for a PlayStation game in which you specifically want haptic effects, adaptive-trigger resistance, or the most predictable troubleshooting path. Choose Bluetooth when you mainly need standard buttons and sticks and prefer to play without a cable.
#1 Best Overall
- Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions through haptic feedback
- Experience varying levels of force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone and connect a headset directly through the 3.5mm jack
- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
- Play on more devices using the USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth to connect easily to Windows PC and Mac computers, Android and iOS mobile phones as well as your PlayStation 5
Connect the DualSense with USB
- Make sure the game is closed if you want to avoid it selecting another input device during setup.
- Connect the USB-C end of the cable to the controller and the other end to the PC.
- Wait for Windows to recognize the controller. The player indicator should light when the controller is active.
- Open the game or Steam after Windows has detected it. If the game still does not respond, use the verification and troubleshooting sections below rather than repeatedly reconnecting the cable.
A wired connection is also the required starting point for PC haptic feedback according to Sony’s DualSense support guidance. It does not override a game’s own feature limitations: a title must implement haptics or adaptive triggers before those effects can operate.
Pair the DualSense over Bluetooth
- Turn the controller off. If the player indicator is on, hold the PS button until it goes dark.
- Disconnect the USB cable. Pairing mode will not begin correctly if the controller remains connected by USB.
- Press and hold the Create button and the PS button together until the light bar begins blinking.
- On Windows, open Settings, choose Bluetooth & devices, turn Bluetooth on, and select the DualSense controller from the list of available devices.
- Wait for the light bar to stop its pairing pattern. The player indicator lights when the connection is complete.
If Windows displays more than one similarly named device, select the controller entry that appears while the DualSense light bar is blinking. A DualSense can be paired with only one device at a time. Moving it from a PC to a console, phone, or another computer therefore requires pairing it with the new device again.
Confirm that Windows and the game can use it
Check the Windows connection
After USB connection or Bluetooth pairing, return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices and confirm that the controller appears as connected when using Bluetooth. For a wired connection, unplugging and reconnecting the cable should make Windows rediscover it. If the controller is present in Windows but absent inside a game, the remaining issue is usually the game’s support or its input configuration, not the initial pairing.

- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Check Steam’s support label
Open the game’s Steam store page and look for Full Controller Support or Partial Controller Support. These labels describe the expected level of controller integration; they do not promise that every DualSense-specific effect is present. A title can accept ordinary button and stick input while omitting haptics, trigger effects, or the controller’s audio hardware.
Check the game’s own options
Launch the game with the controller already connected, then inspect its controller, input, audio, and accessibility menus. Some games expose separate switches for adaptive triggers, vibration, or controller speakers. If a game offers a choice between keyboard prompts and controller prompts, select its controller layout. Exact labels differ by title, so the game’s support notes are the authority for that release.

Which DualSense features work on a PC?
| Feature | PC requirement or qualification |
|---|---|
| Standard buttons, sticks, D-pad and shoulder controls | Windows can receive ordinary controller input after USB or Bluetooth connection, but the game must support controller input. |
| Haptic feedback | Must be supported by the game and requires a USB connection on PC according to Sony’s support guide. |
| Adaptive triggers | Must be supported by the game. Sony notes that USB may be required in select games, so Bluetooth should not be assumed to provide the same behavior. |
| Built-in microphone and speaker | Available on a Windows PC when supported by the game. Their presence in Windows does not mean every title will use them. |
| 3.5 mm headset jack | Requires a wired PC connection. It is not a guaranteed audio path when the controller is connected over Bluetooth. |
The practical rule is to separate controller recognition from feature support. If a game accepts the DualSense but has no trigger resistance or haptic effects, that can be normal behavior rather than a faulty controller. Try USB, confirm the game’s support notes, and check its own effect settings before treating the result as a hardware problem.
Configure a DualSense in Steam
- Connect the controller by USB or pair it through Bluetooth before starting the game.
- Open Steam and check the game’s store page for its controller-support label.
- In your Steam Library, open the game’s controller or per-game properties area if you need to select how Steam handles the device. Use the game’s native DualSense support when the title documents it; avoid adding an extra translation layer unless the game requires one.
- Start the game and test movement, camera control, face buttons, triggers, vibration, and any audio feature the title claims to support.
- If button prompts or input behavior are wrong, close the game, change the game’s controller-handling option, and launch it again. Some titles detect the controller only at startup.
Steam’s support label is a useful first check, not a feature matrix. A game marked with full support can still limit advanced effects to USB or omit a particular DualSense function.

Update DualSense firmware on Windows
Sony provides the PlayStation Accessories Windows app for updating DualSense controller software on a PC. Install and open that app, connect the controller to the PC with USB, and follow the version-update prompt it presents. A wired connection avoids Bluetooth pairing interruptions during the update.
After an update, reconnect the controller and retest the game. Firmware updates do not add support to a game that never implemented a feature, but keeping the controller software current removes an avoidable compatibility variable.

Troubleshoot connection and feature problems
The controller does not appear in Bluetooth settings
- Turn the controller fully off, disconnect USB, and repeat the Create-plus-PS pairing sequence until the light bar blinks.
- Confirm that Bluetooth is enabled in Windows and that the PC’s adapter is functioning.
- Move the controller close to the PC during pairing and remove an old controller entry from Windows before trying again if a stale connection is shown.
- Remember that the controller can be paired with only one device. If it was recently used with another device, pair it again with this PC.
Windows connects, but the game receives no input
- Close and relaunch the game after connecting the controller; some games inspect input devices only at startup.
- Check the Steam store support label and the game’s own controller settings.
- Disconnect other gamepads, steering wheels, or virtual input devices temporarily so the game does not select a different controller as Player 1.
- Try USB if Bluetooth is connected but the game behaves inconsistently.
Haptics or adaptive triggers do not work
- Connect the controller by USB. Sony requires USB for PC haptic feedback, and select games may require it for adaptive triggers.
- Verify that the individual game supports the feature. Controller support alone is not evidence that haptics or trigger effects are implemented.
- Look for separate vibration, haptic, or adaptive-trigger settings in the game and make sure they are enabled.
- Test a game that Sony lists among its selected compatible Steam titles, while remembering that the list does not guarantee every effect in every edition or update.
The microphone, speaker, or headset does not work
- Check whether the game supports the DualSense microphone and speaker on Windows; Sony describes these as game-dependent features.
- For the controller’s headset jack, use USB. Sony specifies a wired PC connection for that jack.
- Confirm that the game is using the DualSense audio device rather than the PC’s built-in speakers or microphone.
The controller disconnects or behaves erratically
- Replace a suspect cable with a known data-capable USB-C cable and connect directly to the PC.
- For Bluetooth, remove the Windows device entry, restart Bluetooth, and pair again with the controller in blinking mode.
- Update the controller through the PlayStation Accessories app.
- If pairing and reset steps do not solve the problem, Sony directs users to reset the controller and, if trouble continues, to PlayStation Repairs.
Reset and move the controller to another device
When normal pairing steps fail, use the controller’s reset procedure recommended by Sony, then repeat the USB or Bluetooth setup from the beginning. A reset is different from simply turning the controller off: it clears a controller-side problem so that a fresh pairing can be attempted.
Because one DualSense can be paired with only one device at a time, moving between a PC and another device is not an automatic handoff. Turn the controller off, start pairing mode on the device you want to use, and select it in that device’s Bluetooth menu. A USB connection can be used instead whenever the target device supports it.
A reliable setup routine for PlayStation games
- Update the controller with the PlayStation Accessories app if its firmware is not current.
- Choose USB when you want haptics, the controller headset jack, or the most predictable feature behavior.
- Connect or pair the controller before launching the game.
- Read the game’s Steam support label and its own controller-feature notes.
- Enable any in-game vibration, adaptive-trigger, microphone, speaker, or audio options.
- Test ordinary controls first, then test each advanced feature separately. This identifies whether the problem is connection, game support, or a disabled setting.
The DualSense is ready for PC play once Windows recognizes it, but the game determines how much of the controller is actually used. USB provides the clearest path to Sony’s documented PC haptics support; Bluetooth is the cable-free option for games that need standard controller input and support that connection mode.
