To connect a custom domain to a Minecraft Bedrock server, create a subdomain such as play.example.com, point an A record to the server’s public IPv4 address, and have players enter that hostname with UDP port 19132. Add an AAAA record only if the server has working public IPv6. The domain name does not open ports or bypass a firewall: a self-hosted server still needs Bedrock running, the host firewall allowing the port, and a router forwarding UDP 19132 to the server’s private address.
What a custom domain changes—and what it does not
A custom domain gives players a readable address instead of a changing or difficult-to-remember IP address. For example, players can use play.example.com rather than 198.51.100.25. DNS translates the name into an IP address; Minecraft then connects to that address and the port you enter.

If the server is behind a router, the public address must reach that router and the router must send the Bedrock traffic to the correct machine. If the public IP changes, the A or AAAA record must also be updated, or the hostname will continue pointing at the old endpoint.
The procedure below applies to the official Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS) and to Bedrock services that provide a normal public endpoint. The exact labels in a registrar, DNS dashboard, router, or managed-hosting panel vary, but the record types and network requirements remain the same.

Values and prerequisites to confirm first
- Bedrock software: BDS must be installed, extracted, and running on Windows or Ubuntu, or a managed host must already have a running Bedrock instance.
- IPv4 endpoint: You need the server’s public IPv4 address. For home hosting, this is normally the address assigned to the internet connection, not the server’s private LAN address.
- Stable private address: A self-hosted machine should keep the same LAN address. Reserve a DHCP lease or configure an appropriate static address so a reboot does not invalidate the router rule.
- UDP access: The selected Bedrock UDP port must be allowed by the server’s operating-system firewall and any upstream firewall.
- Router control: Home hosting requires permission to create a port-forwarding rule. A carrier-grade NAT or a provider that blocks inbound traffic can prevent this even when your local configuration is correct.
- DNS control: You must be able to edit authoritative DNS records for the domain.
- Client and server compatibility: Players need a Bedrock client version compatible with the server. A protocol mismatch can produce “Outdated Client” or “Outdated Server.”
Understand the Bedrock ports
The default IPv4 port in Bedrock Dedicated Server is UDP 19132. The official setup also identifies 19133 as the default IPv6 port through the server-portv6 setting. The port in your configuration is authoritative: if you deliberately change server-port, clients, firewall rules, router forwarding, and any hosting panel must use the replacement value.

Do not assume that publishing a DNS record for IPv6 makes IPv6 usable. An AAAA record should point only to an address that is routed to the server and permitted by the IPv6 firewall. An incorrect AAAA record can make some players try an unreachable IPv6 path before falling back to IPv4.

Use a dedicated subdomain
Create a label such as play, mc, or bedrock under your domain. The resulting full hostname is, for example, play.example.com. A dedicated subdomain keeps the game endpoint separate from a website or mail records at the root domain and makes it easy to move the server later.
Point at the public address, not the LAN address
An A record must contain the public IPv4 address visible on the internet. Addresses such as 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, and 172.16.x.x through 172.31.x.x are private-network addresses and cannot serve as a public Bedrock endpoint. In a home setup, the DNS record points to the router’s public address; the router then forwards the UDP packet to the server’s private address.
Add IPv6 only when it is operational
If the server has a stable, publicly routed IPv6 address and the host firewall allows the configured IPv6 port, add an AAAA record for the same hostname. Otherwise publish only the A record. A DNS dashboard may let you add both records, but that does not test whether both network paths work.

Configure Bedrock Dedicated Server
- Download and extract the official Bedrock Dedicated Server package for the operating system you use.
- Start the Windows or Ubuntu server executable and confirm that the world loads without a startup error.
- Open the server’s
server.propertiesfile and checkserver-port=19132unless you intentionally selected another port. - Check
server-portv6=19133if you plan to offer IPv6. Keep the IPv6 setting aligned with the firewall and the address you will publish. - Restart BDS after changing the properties file, then verify that the process is listening on the selected UDP port.
Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server guidance says to leave the port at 19132, the default for Dedicated Server, unless you have a reason to change it. The same guidance requires the configured server-port and server-portv6 ports to be allowed through the firewall.
Give a self-hosted server a stable LAN address
Port forwarding targets a private address. If the router gives the server a different address after a reboot, the forwarding rule can silently point to another device or to nothing.
- Identify the server’s current private IPv4 address on the LAN.
- In the router’s DHCP settings, reserve that address for the server’s network adapter, or configure a static address using values appropriate for your network.
- Reconnect or reboot the server and verify that it still has the reserved address.
The exact menu names differ by router. The important result is that the Bedrock host retains the same private address used by the forwarding rule.
Allow the port through the host firewall
Create an inbound firewall rule for UDP 19132 on the server machine. If you changed server-port, use that selected port instead. If you offer IPv6, allow UDP 19133 (or your chosen server-portv6) on the IPv6 firewall profile as well.
A firewall exception must apply to the network interface and profile that actually receive the traffic. Opening a TCP rule while Bedrock is using UDP will not solve the problem. After saving the rule, keep BDS running while you test from outside the local network.

Forward UDP traffic on a home router
- Sign in to the router that owns the public internet connection.
- Open the section commonly labelled Port Forwarding, NAT, or Virtual Server.
- Create an inbound rule for UDP 19132 on the public side and send it to the Bedrock host’s stable private IPv4 address on UDP 19132.
- If the public and internal ports are different by design, record both values and use the public port when instructing players. Keeping them the same is simpler.
- Save the rule and confirm that it remains after a router restart.
Do not forward to a temporary DHCP address. Also check whether another router, mesh gateway, or modem is performing NAT. With multiple NAT layers, the forwarding rule may be required on each device, or the upstream device may need to be placed in a mode that passes the public connection to your router.
Test from a genuinely external network, such as a phone using cellular data. A device on the same LAN can appear to work or fail because of router hairpin (NAT loopback) behavior, which is not a reliable test of internet reachability.
Create the DNS records
At the registrar or authoritative DNS provider, add a host record for the chosen subdomain. The record name is usually entered as play rather than the full play.example.com, because the dashboard automatically appends the domain.

Leave unrelated records at the domain unchanged. Do not put a protocol prefix such as https:// in an A or AAAA value. If your provider asks for a TTL, its cache duration controls how long recursive DNS resolvers may retain the answer; it does not change the Bedrock port or improve packet routing.

When your internet provider changes the public IPv4 address, update the A record promptly. If the address changes frequently, a dynamic-DNS solution may be appropriate, but it still must produce a hostname that resolves to the current public address and does not remove the UDP forwarding requirement.

Wait for DNS and verify the result
- Save the A and, if applicable, AAAA record.
- Allow existing DNS caches to expire. Different resolvers and networks can observe the new value at different times.
- Use a DNS lookup utility from more than one network to confirm that
play.example.comreturns the current public address. - Compare the returned IPv4 address with the router’s current public address. If an AAAA record exists, verify that it returns the intended IPv6 address.
- Only after the name resolves correctly, test the Bedrock port from an external network.
A correct DNS answer proves only that name resolution works. It does not prove that BDS is running, that the firewall permits UDP, or that the router forwards to the right machine.
Add the custom domain in Minecraft Bedrock
- Open Minecraft Bedrock and select Play.
- Open the Servers tab and choose Add Server.
- Enter the full hostname, such as
play.example.com, in Server Address. - Enter 19132 in Server Port, unless you configured a different public port.
- Save the entry and connect while the server is running.
The hostname belongs in Server Address; do not append a URL scheme. For a non-default port, enter the port explicitly in Server Port. A DNS name does not tell an ordinary Bedrock client which arbitrary UDP port to use.
Diagnose connection failures in the right order

Use a layer-by-layer test
Start at the server and work outward: confirm the BDS process, then the host firewall, then the router’s forwarding target, then public DNS, and finally the external client. Changing several layers at once makes it difficult to identify the failing component. Keep the configured port visible while testing; a DNS lookup cannot reveal a wrong UDP port.

Why an SRV record usually cannot hide the Bedrock port
DNS SRV records contain a service, protocol, priority, weight, port, and target. Microsoft documents how to create them, but documentation for creating an SRV record is not a promise that every Minecraft client will query it for Bedrock connections.
The default Bedrock port is 19132, and a Minecraft Feedback request for Bedrock SRV support describes that port in the context of a feature request. A feature request is not a compatibility guarantee. Current Bedrock hosting guidance commonly treats SRV-based hiding of a non-default port as unsupported for ordinary Bedrock clients.

For a hostname intended to work across regular Bedrock clients, publish an A (and, when valid, AAAA) record and tell players to enter the port explicitly. If a particular managed service advertises SRV support, follow that service’s exact client instructions and test with the client editions your players use. Do not remove the port from your instructions merely because an SRV record exists.
Self-hosting versus managed Bedrock hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct control over BDS files, the world, the firewall, and the UDP forwarding rule. It also makes you responsible for a reachable public endpoint, router configuration, operating-system maintenance, backups, and recovery when the public address changes.
A managed host can be useful when your internet connection is behind carrier-grade NAT, inbound forwarding is blocked, or you do not want to administer a server machine. Before choosing one, verify all of the following with the provider:
- Custom-domain support and the exact DNS record it expects.
- A reachable Bedrock UDP endpoint, including whether the public port is 19132 or another value.
- Whether you can use IPv4, IPv6, or both.
- How backups, restores, uptime, and world-file access work.
- The player capacity included in the selected plan and how additional capacity is handled.
- Whether the service supplies a dedicated endpoint or shares an address and port.
Regardless of who operates the machine, the player-facing requirement is the same: the hostname must resolve to the service’s public endpoint, and the Bedrock client must know the reachable UDP port.
Operational and security checklist
- Keep the BDS software and Bedrock clients on compatible versions.
- Restrict the firewall rule to UDP and the selected Bedrock port; do not open unrelated services just to make the connection work.
- Use a stable private address and document the router’s forwarding destination.
- Record the current public IPv4 and IPv6 values so an unexpected DNS change is easy to spot.
- Back up the world separately from the machine. A DNS record cannot recover a deleted or corrupted world.
- Re-test from an external network after changing the router, firewall, BDS properties, or DNS records.
- Remove stale A or AAAA records when moving the server. Leaving an old address published can send players to an unintended host.
- Tell players the complete hostname and port, especially when the port is not 19132.
Changing the port or moving the server
If you change server-port, update every dependent layer: BDS configuration, host firewall, router forwarding, the managed-host panel if applicable, and the Server Port value saved by each player. The DNS A or AAAA record does not encode that port, so changing DNS alone will not move traffic to a different Bedrock port.
When moving to a new machine with the same public IP, keep the hostname unchanged and update the private forwarding target. When moving to a different public IP, update the A record and, if applicable, the AAAA record. Players can keep the same saved hostname, but cached DNS answers may continue directing some of them to the previous address until those caches expire.
Bottom line
Use a subdomain A record for the server’s public IPv4 address, add AAAA only for a genuinely working IPv6 path, keep BDS on UDP 19132 unless you have a reason to change it, and make the firewall and router deliver that port to the server. In Bedrock, have players enter the hostname and port explicitly. Treat SRV-based port hiding as provider- and client-specific rather than a dependable general solution.
