The correct connection depends on the CRT television’s input panel. If the console, computer, or streamer has a matching analog output, connect it directly with the appropriate cable. HDMI-only devices require an active HDMI-to-composite converter before they can feed the yellow, red, and white RCA sockets on most CRTs. A television with only an antenna/RF input needs an additional composite-to-RF modulator after that conversion.

Connector shape alone does not prove compatibility. Check the converter’s signal direction, NTSC or PAL support, accepted input timing, output mode, audio handling, power requirement, latency, and the television’s manual before you buy.

Start by identifying every input on the CRT

Turn the television around and read the labels beside its sockets. The available input, not the age of the screen by itself, determines the equipment you need. Keep the television manual nearby because labels and supported modes vary by model and region.

CRT input What it looks like Typical connection use
Composite video and stereo audio Yellow RCA for video, red and white RCA for right and left audio Direct connection from a source with matching analog outputs, or the output of an HDMI-to-composite converter
S-Video Round multi-pin S-Video socket, usually alongside separate audio inputs Source or converter with S-Video output; do not substitute a composite plug unless the equipment explicitly supports it
Component/YPbPr Usually green, blue, and red RCA video sockets, with separate red/white audio Sources that provide component video and the television’s documented component modes
SCART Wide 21-pin connector used on some regional models Compatible SCART equipment or an appropriate active adapter for the signal type
Antenna or RF Threaded or push-in coaxial socket marked Antenna, RF, or VHF/UHF Requires an RF modulator when the source ultimately produces composite video

Philips documentation distinguishes HDMI, component/YPbPr, S-Video, and CVBS/composite inputs and instructs users to select the connected device with the television’s Source control. The exact labels and supported formats on your set take priority over any general diagram.

Choose the shortest compatible signal path

Use the simplest route that matches both ends. Every active conversion stage can add setup requirements, possible latency, and another point of failure.

Source output CRT input Required path
Composite analog Composite RCA Direct yellow video and red/white audio cable
S-Video S-Video Direct S-Video plus the television’s audio inputs
Component/YPbPr Component/YPbPr Direct component video plus red/white audio
HDMI Composite RCA HDMI source to an active HDMI-to-composite converter, then converter RCA outputs to the CRT
HDMI RF only HDMI source to active HDMI-to-composite conversion, then composite-to-RF modulation, then coaxial cable to the CRT

A passive cable that merely changes an HDMI plug to RCA plugs cannot perform this conversion. HDMI carries a digital signal; composite television input expects an analog standard-definition signal. The converter must contain electronics and normally needs its own power.

Directly connect a source with analog output

Some older consoles and other source devices provide composite, S-Video, or component outputs. When the source connector and the CRT input are the same signal type, direct connection avoids an HDMI conversion stage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Switch off the television and source while making the connections.
  2. For composite, plug the yellow connector into the CRT’s video input. Plug red into right audio and white into left audio. Sony’s composite instructions use this yellow/red/white arrangement.
  3. Connect the other end to the source’s matching output. Console cable layouts differ by model, so use that console’s manual rather than assuming a familiar connector has the same pinout.
  4. Power on the source and television.
  5. Press the CRT remote’s Source, Input, AV, or TV/Video control and choose the socket you used. If the set has several AV inputs, cycle through them until the connected input appears.

Do not plug a composite yellow lead into the green socket of a component input unless the television manual explicitly says that socket accepts composite. Component and composite are different signal types even though both may use RCA connectors.

Connect an HDMI-only console to a composite CRT

Most current consoles output through HDMI. For a CRT with yellow, red, and white RCA inputs, use this order: source HDMI output, active HDMI-to-composite converter, then the television’s composite inputs.

  1. Connect an HDMI cable from the console’s HDMI output to the converter’s HDMI input. Verify the labels; an HDMI output socket on the converter is the wrong direction for this job.
  2. Connect the converter’s yellow composite video output to the CRT’s yellow video input.
  3. Connect the converter’s red and white audio outputs to the CRT’s corresponding right and left audio inputs.
  4. Attach the converter’s USB or wall power supply if it requires one. A converter that is not powered may pass no picture or sound.
  5. Turn on the CRT and select the AV input used for the RCA cables.
  6. Set the console to a video mode supported by the converter and television. If the console offers automatic detection, it may still need a compatible standard-definition mode for this chain.

Before purchasing, confirm that the converter accepts the source’s HDMI signal and produces the analog standard your television uses. A listing that says “RCA” may describe an HDMI output, a component output, or an audio-only adapter rather than HDMI-to-composite conversion.

Console output settings can blank the screen

Output mode matters as much as the cable. The PlayStation 3 manual, for example, lists NTSC 480p and 480i options and PAL 576p and 576i options for standard-definition connections. It notes that available modes depend on the console region and tells users to select resolutions supported by the connected television. Those figures are a PS3 example, not a universal list for every console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you selected a mode the CRT chain cannot display, the screen may go black even though the console is running. Use the console’s documented video-reset procedure, reconnect temporarily to a display that can show its current mode if necessary, and choose a supported standard-definition output before trying the CRT again.

Connect an HDMI-only PC

A laptop or desktop with only HDMI follows the same conversion path as an HDMI console: HDMI output from the computer into an active HDMI-to-composite converter, then yellow video and red/white audio to the CRT. The computer may treat the converter as a new display, so allow the operating system to detect it and choose a mode the converter and television document as supported.

  1. Connect the computer’s HDMI output to the converter’s HDMI input.
  2. Connect the converter’s composite and audio outputs to the CRT.
  3. Power the converter and select the CRT’s AV input.
  4. Open the computer’s display settings and select the converter as an external display if it is not selected automatically.
  5. Choose only a timing and refresh mode listed by the converter and television documentation. If the picture disappears after changing settings, revert using the computer’s display controls or reconnect to a modern monitor.

Many computers can send audio separately, but a converter may already extract HDMI audio to its red/white outputs. Check whether your particular converter carries HDMI audio; if it does not, connect the computer’s analog audio output to the CRT or an appropriate audio device separately.

Connect a streaming device

Streaming sticks and boxes generally provide HDMI only, so use the active HDMI-to-composite path. The streamer must also be able to complete its setup on the available display mode. Some devices present menus or protected video that a particular converter may not pass; the converter’s documentation should state what HDMI input formats it accepts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the streamer to the converter’s HDMI input and power both devices.
  2. Connect converter RCA outputs to the CRT and select the correct AV input.
  3. Complete the streamer’s on-screen setup. If the image is unstable or absent, test the converter with another HDMI source and check its supported input mode.
  4. Keep the streamer’s remote pointed at the streamer, not the CRT; the CRT only displays the converted signal and does not change the streamer’s resolution.

The CRT remains a standard-definition display. Converting HDMI does not make it show high-resolution detail; it only changes the signal format so the television can display a compatible standard-definition picture.

If the CRT has only an antenna/RF socket

An RF-only set cannot accept yellow composite video directly. The conditional route is HDMI source → active HDMI-to-composite converter → composite-to-RF modulator → coaxial cable → CRT antenna input.

  1. Convert HDMI to composite with an active converter.
  2. Feed the converter’s yellow video and red/white audio into the RF modulator’s corresponding inputs.
  3. Connect the modulator’s coaxial output to the CRT’s antenna/RF socket.
  4. Select the channel or tuning position specified by the modulator and tune the CRT as its manual describes.

This is a more involved installation than an RCA-equipped CRT. Exact channel behavior, tuning steps, and regional RF standards depend on the modulator and television, so follow those two manuals. Do not buy an RF modulator when the CRT already has composite inputs; it adds unnecessary conversion and tuning.

Understand the picture you will get

A CRT television is a standard-definition display. Sony documentation for one supported model lists RF and composite as 480i and lists additional modes for S-Video. The PlayStation 3 documentation gives regional examples of 480i/480p for NTSC and 576i/576p for PAL. Your set may support fewer modes, so treat these as documented examples rather than a guarantee.

  • NTSC regions: 480i is a common standard-definition interlaced mode; some equipment also documents 480p.
  • PAL regions: 576i is a common standard-definition interlaced mode; some equipment also documents 576p.
  • Interlaced output: A 480i or 576i picture may look softer or flicker differently from a modern progressive display.
  • High-resolution sources: A converter cannot make the CRT reproduce 720p, 1080p, or 4K detail. It must down-convert to a supported standard-definition signal.

For the opposite direction—an old console into a modern digital display—a device such as the legacy RetroTINK 2X Pro accepts component, S-Video, and composite and outputs digital video. Its documentation lists 240p, 288p, 480i, and 576i inputs, says 480p and higher inputs will not work, and warns that 480i handling may flicker. That is a retro-console-to-modern-display product, not a solution for sending HDMI into a CRT.

How to evaluate an HDMI-to-composite converter

No single current converter was verified here as a tested winner. Compare the specifications that determine whether your exact chain will work.

Check Why it matters What to confirm
Signal direction Conversion is directional HDMI input and composite video/audio outputs, not HDMI output from an analog source
Regional standard NTSC and PAL timings are not interchangeable in every setup Support for the CRT’s documented standard
Accepted HDMI mode The source may output a mode the converter cannot process Supported resolutions and refresh rates, including the standard-definition mode you plan to use
Composite output mode The CRT may accept only particular interlaced modes 480i or 576i support as appropriate for the television
Audio handling Some converters carry HDMI audio; others require a separate path Red/white analog audio outputs and any format limitations
Power An unpowered converter produces no usable conversion USB or wall-adapter requirement and included power supply
Latency and image processing Extra processing can affect interactive gaming Published latency information; otherwise treat latency and image quality as unverified

Do not infer quality or lag from the converter’s plastic housing, cable length, or an “upscaler” label. The available documentation establishes the connection and format requirements but does not provide a head-to-head test of current HDMI-to-composite models.

Troubleshoot by symptom

No picture, but the CRT turns on

  • Press the CRT’s Source or Input button and select the exact AV socket used.
  • Check that HDMI enters the converter’s HDMI input and RCA cables leave its outputs.
  • Confirm the converter has power and that its status light, if any, is on.
  • Check yellow video separately from red/white audio. A misplaced red or white plug cannot create a video signal.
  • Test the source and converter with another display or source if available to isolate the failed stage.

Sound but no video, or video but no sound

  • For composite, yellow must go to video; red and white go to right and left audio.
  • Make sure the CRT input selected matches the physical RCA bank.
  • Verify that the converter extracts audio from HDMI. If it does not, route the computer or console’s audio output separately.
  • Do not confuse component’s green/blue/red video sockets with composite’s yellow socket.

Rolling, monochrome, or unstable picture

  • Check NTSC versus PAL compatibility between source settings, converter, and CRT.
  • Use a documented 480i or 576i mode rather than an unsupported progressive or high-resolution mode.
  • Confirm that the source is not producing a non-standard signal. Some retro systems use timings that particular equipment cannot display.
  • Try a different converter only after checking the manuals; changing cables alone will not fix an incompatible signal standard.

The picture disappeared after changing console settings

The console is likely outputting a mode the CRT chain cannot display. Restore its video configuration with the manufacturer’s reset instructions, or connect it temporarily to a display that can show the current mode. Then select a mode accepted by both converter and television.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The RF-only setup cannot be tuned

Check the RF modulator’s specified channel, the CRT’s tuning method, and whether the modulator and television use compatible regional RF standards. Verify the composite picture at the modulator’s input before troubleshooting coaxial tuning.

Practical setup checklist

  • Photograph or write down every CRT input label before ordering equipment.
  • Identify whether the source has composite, S-Video, component, or HDMI output.
  • Prefer a direct analog connection when the source and CRT share the same signal type.
  • For HDMI sources, purchase an active HDMI-to-composite converter with the correct direction and regional standard.
  • Confirm 480i or 576i support where the television requires it.
  • Check whether audio is carried through the converter or needs a separate connection.
  • Provide power to every active converter and select the CRT’s correct AV input.
  • If the CRT has only RF, add a compatible composite-to-RF modulator and follow its tuning instructions.
  • Expect standard-definition output, not modern high-resolution detail.
  • For gaming, verify latency information where available; otherwise regard latency and image quality as unknown until tested in your own setup.

The Bottom Line

Identify the CRT input first. Use a matching analog cable when possible; otherwise use an active HDMI-to-composite converter, and add composite-to-RF modulation only for an RF-only television. Match NTSC/PAL and supported 480i/576i modes, connect video and audio to the correct sockets, power every converter, and select the CRT’s corresponding input.
