To connect a Cisco router to a computer console, use the cable that matches the router’s port labeled Console, then open a terminal emulator using the correct serial port and start with 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control. The connector varies by router model, so check its hardware guide before choosing a cable.
Identify the router’s console port first
A console connection provides local command-line access for configuring or troubleshooting the router. It is separate from the router’s Ethernet network ports: find the port labeled Console and confirm its connector type in the hardware guide for your exact model.
Cisco routers use different console arrangements. Examples in Cisco documentation include RJ-45 serial, mini-USB, and micro-USB connections; these are model-specific examples, not a universal cable standard. See Cisco’s 800 Series console connection guide, 1900 Series hardware guide, and 8500 Series hardware guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose the cable for your router and computer
| Router console port | Connection path | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| RJ-45 serial | Router’s RJ-45 console port to the computer’s DB-9 serial port using an RJ-45-to-DB-9 serial console cable. | If the computer lacks DB-9, use a USB-to-serial adapter and select the COM port assigned to it. Cisco’s 800 Series guide documents this connection approach. |
| USB console | Connect the router directly to the computer using a USB cable with the connector specified for that model. | Connector types differ: Cisco’s 1900 Series guide describes USB Type-A to 5-pin mini Type-B, while its 8500 Series guide describes USB Type-A to 5-pin micro-USB Type-B. A model and operating system may require a driver; follow that model’s guide. |
Do not buy a cable based only on the word “Cisco” or on a router’s Ethernet-port shape. Match both ends to the documented console interface and your computer’s available ports.

Connect and open a terminal session
- Confirm the port and cable. Locate the router port labeled Console and check the exact model’s hardware guide for its connector type.
- Connect the cable. For RJ-45 serial, connect the console cable’s RJ-45 end to the router and its DB-9 end to the computer, directly or through a USB-to-serial adapter. For USB console, connect the model-specified cable directly to the computer.
- Find the serial interface. In the terminal emulator, choose the router’s serial interface. If using a USB-to-serial adapter, identify the COM port assigned to it by the computer.
- Set the terminal parameters. Use 9600 bits per second, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control as the initial profile.
- Start or refresh the session. Look for boot output or a command prompt. If the router is already running, pressing Enter may bring up the prompt.
Cisco’s terminal emulator troubleshooting guidance, updated August 4, 2023, gives 9600 8N1 with no flow control as the common starting profile. The router’s own documentation takes precedence if it specifies different settings.
Troubleshoot a blank, garbled, or unresponsive console
No output appears
- Check that the terminal emulator is using the correct serial or COM port.
- Confirm that the cable is connected to the port labeled Console, not an Ethernet port, and that the cable matches the console connector.
- Start or refresh the terminal session and press Enter. If using an adapter, verify that the computer recognizes it and assigned the port you selected.
Characters are garbled
A mismatched baud rate is a common cause. Begin with 9600, then check the router’s model-specific documentation or configuration if the output remains unintelligible. Cisco notes that some routers may have a changed console speed; its troubleshooting guidance lists 1200, 2400, and 4800 as other possible speeds. It also notes that some platforms—notably 3600 Series routers—support 19200, 38400, 57600, and 115200. These are not universal defaults.

Output appears, but keystrokes do not work
Check the selected port and baud rate, inspect the console cable, and make sure Scroll Lock is off. Cisco identifies these as possible causes of a session that displays output but does not accept keystrokes. Also verify that the terminal profile uses the documented data bits, parity, stop bits, and flow-control setting.

The terminal window should display router boot messages or a command prompt, and the router should respond to keyboard input. Console access is a local management connection; it does not depend on configuring an IP address or connecting through the router’s network interface.
