Connect the cable or satellite box’s HDMI output to the Xbox One port labeled HDMI IN. Connect the Xbox One port labeled HDMI OUT to an HDMI input on the TV. After switching on the equipment, select that TV input. The signal then travels through the Xbox to the television.

What the HDMI connections should look like

The basic arrangement has two HDMI links:

Device Port used Connects to
Cable or satellite box HDMI output Xbox One HDMI IN
Xbox One HDMI OUT TV HDMI input

In other words, the cable box does not connect to the Xbox One’s HDMI OUT port, and the TV does not connect to HDMI IN. HDMI IN receives the set-top box’s picture and sound; HDMI OUT sends the Xbox’s resulting video and audio onward to the TV.

You need one standard HDMI cable for each connection. The archived Xbox support instructions dated June 8, 2015 describe this direct set-top-box-to-Xbox-to-TV chain as the basic setup. They do not specify a special cable length or premium feature.

Before you move any cables

  • Turn off the cable box, Xbox One and TV.
  • Put the devices where their HDMI cables can reach without sharply bending the plugs.
  • Identify the labels printed beside the ports. Use the labels, not the position of a port, because the physical layout varies by device.
  • Have two HDMI cables available. If only one cable is connected, the chain is incomplete and the TV cannot receive the box through the Xbox.

Step-by-step setup

  1. Locate the cable box’s HDMI output. Look for a port labeled “HDMI OUT” or simply “HDMI.” Do not use a port labeled HDMI IN on the box, if it has one.
  2. Connect the first HDMI cable. Plug one end into the cable box’s HDMI output and the other end into the Xbox One port labeled HDMI IN. Push both connectors in firmly, but do not force them.
  3. Locate the Xbox One HDMI OUT port. This is the output that carries the console’s displayed video and audio to a television or receiver.
  4. Connect the second HDMI cable. Plug one end into Xbox One HDMI OUT and the other end into any open HDMI input on the TV.
  5. Switch on the equipment. Turn on the TV, Xbox One and cable box. Give the set-top box time to complete its normal startup.
  6. Select the matching TV input. Use the TV remote’s Input, Source or HDMI button and choose the HDMI socket used in step 4. For example, if the cable is in the TV’s HDMI 2 socket, select HDMI 2.
  7. Check the Xbox display. You should see the Xbox interface or the live-TV signal being passed through it. If the TV reports “No signal,” use the troubleshooting checks below before changing software settings.

Watching live TV through the Xbox

Xbox’s historical setup material describes using the console to watch live television from a cable or satellite box. The archived interface calls this feature OneGuide. Depending on the console’s software, account region and current app availability, the name, controls and setup prompts may differ or may not be present.

The HDMI path works independently of whether a live-TV guide is available: the box’s output still enters HDMI IN and leaves through HDMI OUT. If the picture appears but guide features do not, treat that as a software or service-availability issue rather than rewiring the cables.

Use the cable provider’s remote to change channels unless your current Xbox software explicitly offers a configured live-TV control. The archived instructions are historical and do not establish that identical OneGuide menus are available on every Xbox One console today.

  1. Connect the cable box’s HDMI output to Xbox One HDMI IN.
  2. Connect Xbox One HDMI OUT to an HDMI input on the A/V receiver.
  3. Connect the receiver’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV.
  4. Select the receiver input carrying the Xbox signal, then select the TV input connected to the receiver.

Xbox’s archived receiver guidance says that every device in this HDMI path must support audio over HDMI. If video works but sound does not, check the receiver’s input assignment, HDMI-audio setting and compatibility before assuming the Xbox port is defective. A receiver is unnecessary for the simple two-cable arrangement, so start with the direct TV connection unless your equipment requires the receiver.

What to check when there is no picture

1. Verify the port order

The most common wiring error is reversing the two Xbox ports. The cable box must feed HDMI IN; the TV must be connected to HDMI OUT. Move the cables if either connection is reversed.

2. Verify the TV source

Cycle through the TV’s HDMI inputs and select the one physically connected to Xbox One HDMI OUT. A correctly wired system still appears blank when the TV is on a different source.

3. Reseat both HDMI plugs

With the devices off, disconnect and reconnect each plug so it is fully seated. Inspect for a loose connection or visibly damaged cable, then power the devices on again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Test the cable box directly on the TV

Disconnect the cable box from Xbox HDMI IN and connect the box’s HDMI output directly to a TV HDMI input. Select that input on the TV. This is a diagnostic test: if the direct connection also fails, investigate the box, its output or the cable; if it works, reconnect the Xbox chain and focus on the Xbox ports, input selection or signal compatibility.

5. Isolate one change at a time

Do not replace both HDMI cables, change TV inputs and alter Xbox settings simultaneously. Restore the known wiring, then test a single cable or input so you can identify which part changes the result.

When the picture works but audio does not

  • Confirm that the TV is receiving the same HDMI input used for the video signal.
  • Check the TV volume, mute state and selected audio output.
  • If an A/V receiver is in the chain, verify that its input is assigned to the HDMI socket carrying the Xbox signal.
  • For receiver installations, remember the archived Xbox guidance’s requirement that all devices support audio over HDMI.
  • Test the direct cable-box-to-TV arrangement. This helps distinguish a box or TV audio issue from a receiver or Xbox pass-through issue.

The available historical guidance does not establish one universal audio-menu path for every Xbox One software version, TV or receiver, so menu names can differ.

Using the HDMI-In port for capture or recording

If your goal is to record cable television with a capture device connected after the Xbox, wiring alone may not solve the problem. Elgato explains that copy protection remains present through the Xbox and that cable or satellite HDMI video is usually protected by HDCP. A capture device may therefore show a black screen or refuse to record even when the TV displays the channel normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HDCP is a content-protection system, not a sign that the HDMI cables are in the wrong ports. Do not promise that changing Xbox video settings, swapping to a different TV input or adding a receiver will remove that restriction. Check the capture device manufacturer’s supported signal requirements and the permissions that apply to the content you intend to record.

Resolution and compatibility limits

Do not assume that every Xbox One model, firmware version, cable box, receiver and regional television service will pass the same resolution or refresh rate. The archived Xbox instructions establish the wiring pattern, not a universal 4K pass-through specification. If your setup has a particular resolution requirement, check the manuals for the exact Xbox model, set-top box, TV and receiver and test the complete chain.

Likewise, a successful HDMI connection does not guarantee that every cable-provider feature, interactive service or guide integration will appear through the Xbox. Those functions can depend on the provider, region and software version.

Quick diagnosis by symptom

Symptom First checks Likely area to investigate next
TV says “No signal” Box to Xbox HDMI IN; Xbox HDMI OUT to TV; correct TV input Loose cable, damaged cable, wrong source or device startup
Xbox interface appears, but box channels do not Box is powered on; box output is connected to HDMI IN Set-top-box output, input selection or signal compatibility
Picture but no sound TV volume/mute; receiver input and HDMI-audio settings Audio-over-HDMI compatibility or device-specific audio settings
Guide controls are missing Confirm whether the current console software offers live-TV/OneGuide features Software, region, account or provider availability
Capture device shows a black screen Confirm the TV itself displays the box signal HDCP copy protection and capture-device compatibility

When the direct connection is the better choice

Use the two-cable direct setup when the TV has an available HDMI input and you simply want the box’s signal to pass through the Xbox. It has fewer devices, fewer input assignments and fewer audio handoffs than a receiver-based arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the receiver path only when the receiver is part of your required audio/video system. Every added HDMI hop creates another input-selection point and another compatibility check, while the basic signal order remains unchanged: box output to Xbox HDMI IN, Xbox HDMI OUT onward to the display system.

Final installation checklist

  • Both the cable box and Xbox One are powered on.
  • The cable box’s HDMI output goes to Xbox One HDMI IN.
  • Xbox One HDMI OUT goes to the TV, or to the receiver input used for the TV system.
  • The TV is set to the matching HDMI input.
  • Any receiver is set to the input carrying the Xbox signal.
  • You have separated a wiring problem from an unavailable OneGuide feature or an HDCP capture restriction.

That sequence is the dependable starting point for this setup. The archived Xbox instructions are authoritative for the historical wiring arrangement, while current menu labels, OneGuide availability and device-specific compatibility require confirmation on the equipment and software you actually use.
