Use an HDMI cable from the TV’s port labeled ARC or eARC to the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar’s HDMI (eARC) port. That is Bose’s documented method for sending television audio to this model. Turn the TV off before connecting, power the soundbar, then finish adding it in the Bose app and confirm that the app reports an eARC connection.
Optical is not a documented TV input for the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar, so an optical-only television has no verified connection path for this model. Bluetooth is intended for a wireless source such as a phone or computer, not as Bose’s replacement for the TV’s ARC/eARC connection.
Which connection should you use?
The three connection types in the title are not interchangeable choices for this soundbar. They serve different purposes and have different compatibility requirements.
| Connection | What it does | What you need | Model-specific result |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC/eARC | Returns audio from the television to the soundbar | A TV HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC and an HDMI cable | Documented TV connection for the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar |
| Optical | Would send TV audio over a digital optical cable on products that provide an optical input | A TV optical output and a matching optical input on the soundbar | The Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar instructions do not provide an optical input or optical TV setup |
| Bluetooth | Pairs a wireless source device for playback | A Bluetooth-enabled phone, tablet or computer | Useful for a wireless source; not documented as the TV audio route |
If your television has an ARC or eARC socket, use HDMI. If it has only optical output, do not assume that an adapter or an optical cable will work: Bose has not documented that arrangement for this model.

Before you start
- Locate the HDMI port on the back or side of the TV marked ARC or eARC. A regular HDMI input without that label does not provide the documented Audio Return Channel.
- Locate the soundbar socket marked HDMI (eARC).
- Have an HDMI cable available. Bose’s troubleshooting guidance specifically refers to a High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet when a cable replacement is needed.
- Keep the TV, soundbar and any other HDMI devices accessible while you test the connection.
- Install the Bose app on your phone or tablet if you have not already done so; Bose uses it to add the soundbar and verify the eARC connection during setup.
- Write down which HDMI sockets your console, streamer or disc player currently uses. This makes it easier to restore the original wiring after testing.
You do not need to buy an optical cable for this soundbar’s documented setup. A replacement HDMI cable is only a troubleshooting option if the first cable does not establish the connection; it is not an automatic requirement for every installation.
Connect the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar with HDMI eARC
1. Turn the television off
Switch off the TV before inserting the cable. This gives the TV and soundbar a clean start while they establish the HDMI control and audio-return connection.
2. Connect the soundbar end
Insert one end of the HDMI cable into the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar’s port labeled HDMI (eARC). Do not use a USB socket, a service socket or an unrelated HDMI connector.

3. Connect the ARC/eARC end on the TV
Insert the other end into the television’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC. The label matters: Bose identifies this port as necessary because it carries the Audio Return Channel that sends the TV’s sound back to the soundbar.
4. Connect power
Plug the soundbar into power and turn on the TV. Bose’s setup instructions say the soundbar turns on automatically when connected to power. If it does not, wait briefly for startup before changing settings.
5. Complete setup in the Bose app
Open the Bose app, choose the option to add a product, and follow the on-screen setup. During Wi-Fi setup, Bose directs you to confirm that the soundbar is connected to eARC. Complete that confirmation before testing a television channel or streaming app.
App setup is useful even when the HDMI cable is already connected. It gives you a clear confirmation that the soundbar has been recognized on the eARC path instead of leaving you to guess from a silent speaker. If setup pauses, leave the physical connection in place and repeat the app’s add-product process after checking the TV’s audio-output menu.
6. Test several TV sources
Play audio from a built-in TV app, a broadcast channel or another source connected to the TV. Test more than one source because a single app can have its own mute or volume setting. Adjust volume with the TV remote or the soundbar controls and check that the soundbar responds.
Once the basic test works, switch between a built-in app and an HDMI-connected device. The TV should remain the switching hub: selecting a different TV input changes the program you watch, while the TV continues returning its audio over ARC/eARC.
How to connect other video devices
Connect a streaming box, game console, disc player or other wired audio/video source to the television, not to the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar. Bose’s model-specific connection information says the soundbar has no other connections for additional devices. The TV then sends the selected source’s audio back through its ARC/eARC port to the soundbar.

For example, connect a console to a normal HDMI input on the TV, select that input on the TV, and leave the soundbar connected to the TV’s dedicated ARC/eARC port. Do not move the soundbar cable to the console’s HDMI socket and do not expect the soundbar to act as an HDMI switch for those devices.

If adding a device causes the soundbar to change source or stop responding, test with that device temporarily disconnected. If TV sound returns, investigate HDMI-CEC settings on the added device rather than rewiring the soundbar through it.
What ARC and eARC mean in this setup
ARC stands for Audio Return Channel. It is a feature of a specially labeled HDMI port that lets the TV send audio in the reverse direction through the HDMI cable. eARC is the enhanced version. The Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar labels its own port HDMI (eARC), while Bose’s instructions require the TV port to be labeled ARC or eARC.
The important practical test is the port label, not whether another HDMI socket on the television looks identical. A cable connected to an ordinary HDMI input can carry video into the TV but will not provide the documented return path for TV sound.
ARC and eARC are also different from simply choosing “HDMI” as a picture input. The soundbar is waiting for the return channel from the television, so the TV socket and its audio-routing setting must both support that function.
Can you use optical instead of HDMI eARC?
Not through a documented connection for the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar. The model-specific Bose instructions do not list an optical input and state that the described TV audio route requires a TV with HDMI ARC/eARC. An optical-only television therefore does not have the supported connection described by Bose for this soundbar.
Do not copy optical instructions written for a different Bose soundbar, including an older model with a different port layout. Product families can look similar while providing different inputs. Also avoid treating an optical-to-HDMI converter as a verified solution: Bose does not document that workaround for the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar, so its compatibility, control behavior and audio support are unestablished.
If optical is the only output on your TV, the practical next step is to check whether the television has another HDMI port specifically labeled ARC or eARC, often on the side or rear panel. If no such port exists, the TV does not meet the documented requirement for this model. Do not force an optical plug into an HDMI socket or buy an optical lead simply because another Bose setup article mentions one.
Can you connect the soundbar to the TV with Bluetooth?
Bose documents Bluetooth as a way to pair a wireless source device, such as a phone or computer. It does not describe Bluetooth pairing as a substitute TV audio path. Use HDMI ARC/eARC for normal television listening and reserve Bluetooth for direct playback from a compatible source.
Pair a phone, tablet or computer
- Tap the Bluetooth button on top of the soundbar. Wait for the status light to pulse blue.
- On the phone, tablet or computer, open Bluetooth settings and turn Bluetooth on.
- Select Bose LS Ultra Soundbar, or select the custom name assigned during product setup.
- When the device reports that it is connected, start playback in the desired app or program.
If the status light is steady blue, another device is already connected. Hold the soundbar’s Bluetooth button for five seconds until the light pulses blue, then repeat the pairing steps. Bluetooth playback from a phone does not change the HDMI connection used for TV audio; switch the source back to the TV when you want to watch television.

Bluetooth pairing is therefore a source-selection task, not a cable substitute. A phone can play music while paired, but that pairing does not make an optical-only TV compatible and does not create an ARC/eARC return channel.
Why is there no sound from the TV?
Work through the checks in this order. The first steps address the most common physical and routing errors; later steps address control conflicts and cable faults.
1. Verify both port labels
At the soundbar, the cable must be in HDMI (eARC). At the TV, it must be in the socket labeled ARC or eARC. A cable in a standard HDMI input can leave the picture working while the soundbar receives no TV audio.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →2. Check the TV’s audio-routing setting
Open the TV’s sound, audio-output or setup menu and select HDMI ARC/eARC, external speakers or the equivalent option supplied by that manufacturer. Menu names and locations differ between television brands, so use the TV maker’s instructions for the exact label. Also make sure the TV is not forced to its internal speakers, Bluetooth headphones or another output.
After changing the setting, test a built-in TV app first. That removes the console or streaming box from the diagnosis and confirms whether the TV itself is returning sound.
3. Select the TV source on the soundbar
If the soundbar is still listening to Bluetooth or another source, hold Play/Pause on the soundbar for two seconds to change the source, as described in Bose’s model-specific troubleshooting guide. Then start TV playback again.
4. Power-cycle the television
Disconnect the TV from power for 30 seconds, reconnect it, and turn it on. This resets the HDMI handshake without changing the soundbar’s physical wiring. After the TV restarts, recheck its ARC/eARC audio setting.

HDMI-CEC allows devices to send control commands through HDMI. A streaming box, console or disc player can sometimes send conflicting commands that change the active source or speaker output. Bose suggests disabling CEC on other HDMI-connected devices as a troubleshooting step. Disable it temporarily on those devices, test TV audio, and then decide whether you need to restore it for remote-control features.
6. Replace the cable for testing
Try a different High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet. Bose recommends this as a troubleshooting measure when the connection still fails. Make sure both plugs are fully seated and test the replacement with the same ARC/eARC ports before changing several variables at once.
A cable swap is a diagnostic step, not proof that the soundbar needs a special branded lead. Use the same labeled ARC/eARC sockets while testing so the cable is the only changed variable.

7. Recheck app setup
Return to the Bose app, add the product if necessary, and confirm that setup identifies the soundbar as connected to eARC. If the app cannot complete that confirmation, repeat the port, TV-setting and power-cycle checks before attempting another cable.

Common setup mistakes to avoid
- Using the wrong TV HDMI socket: Only the port marked ARC or eARC provides the documented return channel.
- Expecting an optical cable to fit the model’s instructions: The Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar documentation does not provide an optical TV input.
- Using Bluetooth for TV sound: Bose’s Bluetooth procedure is for pairing a wireless source device, not for replacing ARC/eARC.
- Connecting external devices to the soundbar: Wired sources belong on the TV; their sound returns through the TV’s ARC/eARC port.
- Changing several settings at once: Test one change at a time so you can identify whether the port, TV routing, CEC, power state or cable caused the failure.
- Following instructions for another Bose model: Optical availability and port layouts are model-specific. The Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar is not the same as the older Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar.
- Assuming a picture proves the audio path works: Video can work through a regular HDMI input even when that socket cannot return TV audio.
- Leaving a paired phone active: A steady blue Bluetooth light indicates another device is connected; clear that connection before testing TV source selection.
Connection choices by situation
| Your equipment or goal | Recommended action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| TV has HDMI ARC or eARC | Connect TV ARC/eARC to soundbar HDMI (eARC) | This is the documented TV audio route and supports audio return from the television. |
| TV has several HDMI inputs and a console or streamer | Connect the console or streamer to the TV; keep the soundbar on the TV’s ARC/eARC port | The soundbar has no other documented connections for additional wired devices. |
| TV has optical output but no ARC/eARC port | Do not treat optical or an optical-to-HDMI adapter as a verified solution for this model | Bose’s Lifestyle Ultra instructions do not document an optical input or that adapter path. |
| Phone or computer needs wireless playback | Pair it with Bluetooth using the soundbar’s Bluetooth button | Bluetooth is documented for a wireless source device. |
| TV audio stopped after adding another HDMI device | Check source selection and temporarily disable CEC on the other device | CEC commands can conflict with source and speaker control. |
Model and documentation scope
These instructions apply specifically to the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar. Bose’s product support page labels this model “Sold from 2026” and lists its Owner’s Guide. The connection guidance described here is therefore not a universal instruction for every Bose soundbar. In particular, optical steps published for other models should not be transferred to the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar.
The decisive compatibility check is simple: find the TV’s ARC/eARC label and connect it to the soundbar’s HDMI (eARC) port. If that port is absent, Bose’s current model-specific material does not establish a supported optical or Bluetooth replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I connect my Bose Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar to my TV?
With both devices off, connect the soundbar’s HDMI (eARC) port to the TV’s HDMI socket labeled ARC or eARC. Power the soundbar, add it in the Bose app, and confirm the app reports an eARC connection. Then select HDMI ARC/eARC or external speakers in the TV’s audio settings.
Can I use optical instead of HDMI eARC?
Not through a connection Bose documents for the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar. Its model-specific instructions do not list an optical input. If the TV has no ARC/eARC port, an optical cable or optical-to-HDMI adapter is not a verified solution for this model.
Can I connect it to my TV with Bluetooth?
Bose documents Bluetooth for a wireless source such as a phone, tablet or computer. It is not documented as the replacement TV-audio path. Use HDMI ARC/eARC for television sound.
Why is there no sound from my TV?
Confirm both port labels, select HDMI ARC/eARC or external speakers in the TV menu, and hold Play/Pause on the soundbar for two seconds to select the TV source. Then power-cycle the TV for 30 seconds, temporarily disable CEC on other HDMI devices, and try another High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet.
What does the blue Bluetooth light mean?
A pulsing blue light means the soundbar is ready to pair. A steady blue light means another device is connected; hold the Bluetooth button for five seconds until the light pulses, then choose Bose LS Ultra Soundbar in the source device’s Bluetooth settings.
Where should I connect a game console or streaming box?
Connect each wired device to a normal HDMI input on the TV. Keep the soundbar connected to the TV’s dedicated ARC/eARC port; the TV returns the selected device’s audio to the soundbar.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do I need a special Bose HDMI cable?
Bose’s troubleshooting guidance recommends trying another High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet if the connection fails. It does not say every owner must purchase a particular branded cable.
Why does the TV picture work but the soundbar stay silent?
The cable may be in a regular HDMI socket rather than the TV’s ARC/eARC socket. Picture input and audio return are separate functions, so move the cable to the labeled ARC/eARC port and check the TV’s audio-output setting.
The Bottom Line
For the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar, connect HDMI (eARC) on the soundbar to the TV’s ARC or eARC port, then complete setup in the Bose app. Optical is not a documented input for this model, and Bluetooth is for pairing a phone or computer rather than replacing the TV’s ARC/eARC route. If sound is missing, verify the port labels and TV audio setting first, then power-cycle, check CEC, and test another High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet.
