Put the controller into pairing mode, then on your Android device open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device and select the controller. The pairing-mode button combination depends on the controller, so use its manual for that step.
Pair a Bluetooth controller with Android
Keep the controller near your phone or tablet while pairing. The steps below follow Google Android Help’s controller setup instructions. Android menu names can differ by device maker and version, so look for the equivalent Bluetooth or connected-device controls if your Settings app uses different labels.
- Put the controller into pairing mode. Follow the controller’s manual for the correct button combination or procedure. There is no single pairing-mode command that applies to every controller.
- Open Settings on Android.
- Tap Connected devices, then Pair new device. If the labels differ, use your device’s Bluetooth settings to begin adding a device.
- Choose the controller from the available-device list. If Android shows a confirmation prompt, follow the prompt to complete pairing.
Once paired, the controller should be available as a Bluetooth accessory. Pairing establishes the connection between Android and the controller; whether a particular game accepts controller input is a separate compatibility question.

If Android does not find the controller
- Check pairing mode first. A controller that is powered on is not necessarily discoverable. Recheck its manual and start pairing mode as instructed for that model.
- Start device discovery from Android Settings. Use the device’s Bluetooth or connected-device controls and choose the option to pair a new device. Google’s general Bluetooth instructions describe the standard process in Find & set up Bluetooth devices near your Android device.
- Check the displayed device name. Select the controller entry shown in Android’s list. If you cannot identify it confidently, consult the controller documentation rather than guessing between nearby devices.
- Account for menu differences. Android’s Bluetooth guide notes that some instructions apply only to Android 15 and later or require compatible hardware. A missing label or feature may reflect the Android version or device, not a problem with the controller.
Reconnect a controller you paired before
If the controller is already saved on the Android device, you generally do not need to pair it as a new device again. Turn on Bluetooth, open the saved Bluetooth-device controls, and select the controller if it appears as disconnected. The exact labels and screen layout depend on the Android device; Google’s Bluetooth device guide covers selecting saved accessories and managing them.

If you no longer want Android to retain that pairing, use the device-management controls for the saved accessory and choose the option to forget or remove it. You can then start a fresh pairing using the controller’s manual and Android’s new-device flow.
Use Android’s controller settings
After connecting, Android provides settings for supported controller adjustments. Google says users can swap button assignments or swap the left and right joysticks. For a wireless controller, look under Connected devices; for a wired controller, the documented route is System > Game controllers. These options are for changing input assignments; they do not establish that every game supports every controller or customization. If the controller connects but a game does not respond as expected, check that game’s own controller-support information.

Fast Pair is an optional shortcut, not a requirement for connecting a controller. It can display a connection prompt when the particular accessory supports Fast Pair. Do not assume that a controller supports it based on being Bluetooth-enabled: verify support for that exact accessory. If no prompt appears, use Android Settings to pair it normally. Bluetooth or a wired connection?
Android’s controller guidance describes both Bluetooth and a compatible cable as connection options. The right choice depends on the controller, the Android device, and the game; the official guidance does not provide a universal model-by-model compatibility list.

Before relying on either method, check the controller documentation for Android compatibility and the game’s own support information for controller input. A Bluetooth connection by itself does not guarantee that a specific game will use the controller.
