To run a 2560 × 1440 monitor at 144Hz, three parts must agree: the monitor input, the PC’s graphics output and the cable must all support that timing. Connect the monitor directly to the intended graphics output, select the display’s recommended 2560 × 1440 mode in Windows, then choose 144Hz under Advanced display. If 144Hz is missing, check the exact monitor manual for an input limit or an OSD overclock/high-refresh setting before replacing hardware.

What 144Hz at QHD actually means

QHD is 2560 × 1440 pixels. A 144Hz setting asks the display to refresh 144 times per second, rather than the 60Hz commonly used by basic office displays. Microsoft defines refresh rate as “the number of times per second that the image refreshes on the screen.” See Microsoft’s refresh-rate explanation.

The 144Hz number printed on a box is a maximum advertised mode, not a guarantee that every connector, cable or computer will expose it. Windows lists modes available for the selected display and the current signal configuration. A rate marked with an asterisk does not support the currently selected resolution; choosing it can make Windows change the resolution to obtain that rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Refresh rate is also separate from frame rate. Windows can be set to 144Hz even when a game is rendering fewer than 144 frames per second, and a game can render more frames than the desktop mode if the display path is configured differently. For this setup, first establish the fixed QHD/144Hz display mode; configure game settings and variable refresh afterward.

Check compatibility before plugging anything in

Write down the exact monitor model, graphics card (or integrated GPU), monitor inputs and graphics outputs. Open the monitor’s timing/specification table in its manual. Look for a line that explicitly combines 2560 × 1440 with 144Hz and identifies the connector, plus any note about overclocking, “high refresh,” or a required input mode.

Match both ends of the connection

The connection is only as capable as its least-capable part. The monitor input, GPU output and cable must work together at QHD/144Hz. The required DisplayPort or HDMI capability depends on the particular devices; there is no universal rule that every HDMI cable supports 144Hz or that DisplayPort always does. ViewSonic explains this end-to-end requirement in its 144Hz cable guidance.

Check What to verify If it fails
Monitor input The exact input is rated for 2560 × 1440 at 144Hz in the model’s timing table. Use another input or the mode specified by the manual.
GPU output The graphics card or integrated GPU can produce QHD at 144Hz through that connector. Use a different GPU output or a GPU that supports the required timing.
Cable The cable is suitable for the connector and mode required by both devices. Test a known-good cable that meets the device specifications; do not infer capability from the plug shape alone.
Monitor mode The OSD does not have a disabled overclock, high-refresh, or input-specific option. Enable the model-specific setting, then reselect the mode in Windows.
VRR support The monitor and GPU support the desired Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync or G-SYNC Compatible feature over that connection. Use fixed 144Hz first; configure variable refresh separately.

Use the graphics card output on a desktop

If a desktop has a discrete graphics card, connect the monitor to an output on that card when the system is designed to use it. A motherboard video connector may be driven by integrated graphics, disabled in firmware, or subject to different limits. Check the PC or motherboard documentation rather than assuming every desktop behaves identically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before changing hardware, record what the current setup actually does. Note which input is selected on the monitor, which output is being used on the PC, the cable type, the resolution and every refresh rate Windows lists. This makes it easier to compare one change at a time and prevents guessing based only on the connector’s shape.

Connect the monitor

  1. Turn off the PC or leave it running if the monitor and computer support hot-plugging.
  2. Connect the cable directly from the selected GPU output to the monitor input identified in the manual. Avoid docks, adapters, KVMs and receivers during the initial test because each can impose its own mode limit.
  3. Choose that input with the monitor’s Input/Source control.
  4. Turn on the monitor and PC. If the monitor shows no image, return to the cable and input checks before changing Windows settings.

If your existing connection does not meet the specifications, buy a DisplayPort cable or the appropriate HDMI cable only after comparing the exact monitor and GPU requirements. A cable recommendation cannot be made accurately without those model numbers. There is no supported universal price, brand or cable length that guarantees 144Hz; replacing a cable is justified only when the current one fails the documented requirements or a direct test with a compliant cable changes the available modes.

Set 2560 × 1440 and 144Hz in Windows 11

Choose the correct display and resolution

  1. Open Settings > System > Display.
  2. If more than one screen is attached, click the monitor you are configuring. Settings apply to the selected display, not automatically to every screen.
  3. Under Display resolution, select 2560 × 1440, or the resolution Windows labels Recommended when that is the monitor’s native QHD mode.
  4. Keep the change when Windows asks for confirmation.

Microsoft’s screen-resolution instructions document the display-selection and resolution controls. Set resolution before choosing refresh rate so Windows evaluates the available rates for the intended QHD mode.

Select 144Hz under Advanced display

  1. Remain in Settings > System > Display and open Advanced display.
  2. Use the display selector if necessary and confirm that the monitor shown is the one connected at QHD.
  3. Open the refresh-rate menu and select 144Hz.
  4. Accept the confirmation prompt. The Advanced display page should show the selected resolution and current refresh rate.

Available choices depend on the monitor, connection and current configuration. If 144Hz appears with an asterisk, do not use that entry for a QHD setup: Microsoft notes that an asterisk means the rate does not support the current resolution and selecting it changes resolution to achieve the rate. Return to the supported QHD mode and investigate the connection instead.

Some Windows 11 systems also expose a dynamic refresh-rate choice for supported hardware. Dynamic refresh is not the same as explicitly selecting a fixed 144Hz mode. While diagnosing a missing or unstable 144Hz option, choose the specific 144Hz entry, confirm the active resolution, and only then test any dynamic or battery-saving option documented for that computer.

Set the rate in NVIDIA Control Panel when needed

Some NVIDIA systems expose a more complete list in the driver panel. Open NVIDIA Control Panel > Display > Change resolution. Select the correct monitor, choose the PC/QHD resolution rather than an incorrectly grouped television mode, and select 144Hz in the refresh-rate list. Click Apply and verify the result in Windows Advanced display.

The exact choices vary with the connected monitor, GPU and driver. NVIDIA documents this flow in To select a screen refresh rate. If the NVIDIA list also stops at 60Hz, the limitation is probably earlier in the signal path: input, output, cable, monitor mode or hardware support.

Check the monitor’s OSD for a required high-refresh mode

Some monitors ship with their highest rate disabled until you enable an overclock, “144Hz mode,” or input-specific option in the on-screen display. Menu names and supported ports differ by model. Open the monitor OSD, locate the gaming, display or overclock section, and follow the exact manual for that model.

ASUS’s LCD-monitor overclocking guidance illustrates the important qualification: overclock operation depends on support from both the monitor and graphics card, and the manual identifies the signal port to use. Do not copy a menu path from another model and assume it applies to yours. After changing the OSD option, restart or reconnect the display if the manual requests it, then repeat the Windows resolution and refresh-rate steps.

If the monitor has separate timing tables for different inputs, treat those as separate capabilities. A port that works at QHD/144Hz may not provide the same rate through another port on the same panel. Likewise, an OSD option may apply only to the currently selected input. Confirm the active source before concluding that the monitor cannot reach its advertised rate.

Configure variable refresh separately from fixed 144Hz

Windows’ fixed refresh-rate choice and variable refresh rate (VRR) are related but different. Set the desktop to 144Hz first. VRR then allows the monitor to vary refresh timing within its supported range to coordinate with game frames; it does not replace the 144Hz selection.

AMD FreeSync or Adaptive-Sync

  1. Open the monitor OSD and enable its Adaptive-Sync or FreeSync option if the manual requires it.
  2. In AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, open the display settings for the connected monitor and enable FreeSync when the option is available.
  3. Confirm that the display and GPU are compatible and that the chosen connector supports FreeSync for that product. AMD’s general requirements are in How to Enable AMD FreeSync; the Adrenalin-specific procedure is in How to Enable AMD FreeSync with AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.

AMD notes that certified displays can provide FreeSync over DisplayPort and HDMI depending on the product tier. The OSD label and available controls can differ by monitor.

NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible mode

  1. Connect through a port supported by the specific monitor and GeForce GPU pairing.
  2. Enable Adaptive-Sync or the monitor’s G-SYNC-related option in the OSD.
  3. Open NVIDIA Control Panel, choose Set up G-SYNC, enable it for the selected display and apply the setting.

NVIDIA’s compatibility guidance explains that supported G-SYNC Compatible displays have connection requirements; consult its DisplayPort and HDMI support article for the relevant hardware context. If VRR is unavailable, leave it off while diagnosing the basic QHD/144Hz mode.

Why a 144Hz monitor may be stuck at 60Hz

The wrong display is selected

With multiple monitors, Windows may be showing the settings for another screen. Return to Settings > System > Display, select the QHD monitor in the arrangement, then reopen Advanced display. The current resolution and refresh rate should identify the selected panel.

Resolution was not set first

A refresh menu can contain rates that are valid only at a lower resolution. Select 2560 × 1440 first. Treat an asterisk beside 144Hz as a warning that the current combination is not supported, not as a mode to force.

The port or cable is the bottleneck

Inspect both ends and confirm that the monitor input, GPU output and cable are the specified combination for QHD/144Hz. Try another supported output on the same GPU and another compliant cable. Remove an adapter, dock or receiver temporarily. The connector version required is device-specific, so replacing a cable without checking the endpoint specifications may not solve the problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The monitor’s maximum mode is disabled

Read the exact model’s timing table and OSD instructions. Enable the required overclock or high-refresh input mode, then revisit Windows. If the manual lists 144Hz only for one input, move the cable to that input.

The driver or display enumeration is stale

Restart the PC after changing cables or OSD modes. Install display-driver updates through Windows Update or the PC/GPU manufacturer’s support channel when modes appear unexpectedly limited. Microsoft’s display troubleshooting guidance recommends checking drivers when resolution or display behavior is abnormal.

Optional settings are constraining the mode

HDR, color-depth choices and VRR can interact with some hardware combinations. There is no universal setting that causes every 144Hz failure, so test a basic configuration: QHD, 144Hz, standard color settings and VRR disabled. Re-enable advanced options one at a time, using the monitor and GPU documentation to interpret any change.

An intermediary is limiting the signal

A dock, adapter, KVM switch, receiver or other device between the GPU and monitor can advertise a narrower mode list than the endpoints. Disconnect it for the first test and use one direct cable. If 144Hz appears directly, consult the intermediary’s own specifications rather than assuming it passes every mode unchanged.

Compare connection choices when a monitor has several inputs

Do not choose a connector solely by its name. For each available path, record the following:

Decision point Question to answer from the manuals
QHD/144Hz timing Does this exact monitor input and GPU output support 2560 × 1440 at 144Hz together?
Mode activation Does this input require an OSD overclock, high-refresh toggle or special signal mode?
VRR Does the desired FreeSync, Adaptive-Sync or G-SYNC Compatible feature work over this connector with this GPU?
Intermediary hardware Will an adapter, dock, KVM or receiver preserve the required timing?

The ViewSonic connector guidance and ASUS overclock guidance are why a blanket “use HDMI” or “always use DisplayPort” recommendation is unreliable.

Windows 10 as legacy context

The same broad path exists in Windows 10: Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings, followed by the refresh-rate selector. Microsoft support documentation covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. For a current PC, use Windows 11 labels and keep Windows 10 instructions only for an unsupported legacy installation.

Final verification checklist

  • The monitor’s OSD or information page reports 2560 × 1440 and 144Hz, if the model provides such a readout.
  • Windows Advanced display identifies the intended monitor and shows 144Hz without an asterisk-related resolution change.
  • The cable runs directly between a supported GPU output and monitor input during testing.
  • The monitor manual confirms that the selected input supports QHD at 144Hz.
  • VRR is configured separately and only after the fixed 144Hz desktop mode works.
  • If the rate is still absent, record the monitor model, GPU model, cable type, selected input and every rate shown in Windows before seeking manufacturer support. Without those details, the cause cannot be narrowed reliably.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get 144Hz on my QHD monitor?

Connect a direct cable from a graphics output that supports 2560 × 1440 at 144Hz to the monitor input documented for that mode. In Windows 11, select the monitor, choose 2560 × 1440, open Advanced display and select 144Hz. Enable any model-specific high-refresh or overclock option first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is my 144Hz monitor stuck at 60Hz?

The selected display may be wrong, the resolution may not be set to 2560 × 1440, or the monitor input, GPU output, cable or OSD mode may limit the signal. Test one direct connection, check the monitor’s timing table and look for an asterisk beside 144Hz in Windows.

Which cable do I need for 144Hz at 1440p?

There is no universal answer from the plug shape alone. Compare the exact monitor input, GPU output and cable requirements in both device manuals. Use the connector and cable combination explicitly rated for 2560 × 1440 at 144Hz; a DisplayPort cable is appropriate only when those specifications call for it.

Does every HDMI cable support 144Hz?

No. The required HDMI capability depends on the monitor, GPU and selected timing. Verify the complete connection rather than assuming any HDMI cable will provide QHD at 144Hz.

Should I use the motherboard port or the graphics-card port?

When a desktop uses a discrete graphics card, use the intended output on that card if the system documentation specifies it. A motherboard video connector can be driven by integrated graphics, disabled or subject to different limits, so do not assume it is equivalent.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to enable FreeSync or G-SYNC to get 144Hz?

No. Fixed 144Hz and variable refresh are separate settings. Establish QHD at 144Hz first, then enable Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync or G-SYNC Compatible only if the monitor, GPU and chosen connector support it.

Why does Windows show 144Hz with an asterisk?

Microsoft uses the asterisk to indicate that the rate does not support the currently selected resolution. Selecting it can make Windows change resolution, so return to the supported QHD mode and troubleshoot the signal path instead.

What details should I give support if 144Hz is still unavailable?

Provide the exact monitor model, GPU or integrated-GPU model, selected monitor input, PC output, cable type, OSD settings and every resolution/refresh option shown in Windows and the graphics driver. Those details identify whether the limit is the display, connection, driver or hardware.

The Bottom Line

For 144Hz at 2560 × 1440, verify the monitor input, GPU output and cable as one system; connect directly; select QHD before 144Hz in Windows; and use the model’s OSD instructions. Treat VRR as a separate feature and troubleshoot the physical signal path before buying replacement hardware.
