Palworld reads its dedicated-server settings from PalWorldSettings.ini when the server starts. Launch the server once, copy DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini to a new file named PalWorldSettings.ini in the platform-specific configuration folder, edit that copy, and restart the server. On Windows the folder is Pal/Saved/Config/WindowsServer; on Linux it is Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer. The current Pocketpair configuration documentation is the authoritative reference for available parameters.
What you need before changing a setting
You need access to the machine or hosting control panel that runs the Palworld dedicated server, permission to read and write its files, and a text editor that can preserve plain-text formatting. Do not edit a similarly named client file in your local game installation: the dedicated server reads the configuration under its own Pal/Saved/Config directory.
Pocketpair’s current documentation reports version 1.0.4. An older page labeled 0.1.5.1 is identified as unmaintained, so parameter names or behavior copied from that page should be checked against the current documentation before you rely on them. Use the current Pocketpair configuration-parameters documentation as the reference for your server build.
- Know whether the process is a Windows or Linux dedicated server; the folder name differs.
- Have a recent backup of the configuration file and, preferably, the entire server save.
- Schedule a restart, because the settings are read at startup rather than continuously while the process is running.
- Record the original value of every option you change so you can reverse one change at a time.
Find the correct configuration folder
The configuration files are created after the dedicated server has started at least once. If you cannot find either file, launch the server, allow it to finish its initial startup, shut it down cleanly, and then inspect the platform folder.

The path shown is relative to the dedicated server’s installation directory. A managed host may expose the same directory through a file manager rather than a normal desktop path; select the host’s file browser location that corresponds to the platform folder above.
Create PalWorldSettings.ini from the default template
- Start the dedicated server once so that its
Pal/Saved/Configdirectories and template are generated. - Stop the server before making the first edit. This prevents a running process from writing over the file while you are changing it.
- Open the appropriate
WindowsServerorLinuxServerdirectory. - Make a copy of
DefaultPalWorldSettings.iniin that same directory. - Rename the copy exactly
PalWorldSettings.ini. Check that your editor or file manager has not added an extra extension such as.txt. - Keep the untouched default file. It is useful for comparing syntax and restoring a known template if an edit breaks startup.
Pocketpair documents this copy-and-rename process in its current configuration guide. The older version-specific page is available at the 0.1.5.1 configuration page, but that page is reported as unmaintained and should not override current documentation.
Understand the file’s format before editing
Community instructions describe the active configuration as one long OptionSettings=(...) line. The parentheses contain comma-separated parameter assignments. Start with the template supplied with your server and change only the values you need; do not replace the line with a configuration copied from a different game version.
- Preserve the opening and closing parentheses around the option list.
- Keep commas between assignments and retain the parameter names exactly as they appear in the template.
- Do not create a second
OptionSettingsline to hold new values. Edit the existing line so the server has one unambiguous set of options. - Use the value style already shown beside an option in your template. Do not change a numeric field to quoted text, or a quoted text field to an unquoted value, unless the current documentation explicitly shows that format.
- Save the file as plain text in the original directory and encoding.
Because the settings commonly occupy one very long line, a word processor is a poor choice: it can insert formatting characters or smart punctuation. A code editor or basic plain-text editor is safer. If you need to make the line easier to inspect, use horizontal scrolling rather than inserting structural line breaks into the option expression.

Settings most administrators configure first
The names below are the options highlighted by the available community guide. That guide does not establish every default, maximum, or version-specific behavior, so treat the current template and Pocketpair documentation as authoritative when they differ.
Server identity and access
Set the server’s public name and access credentials in the matching entries already present in your template. The guide identifies AdminPassword for administrator access and ServerPassword for a password-protected server. The exact parameter for the displayed server name is not identified in the retrieved material; use the name shown in your current template and confirm it in the current Pocketpair parameter list rather than inventing a key.

After saving, protect the file with the same operating-system permissions used for the rest of the server configuration.
Maximum player count
The community guide points to ServerPlayerMaxNum for the player limit. A claim that this setting is capped at 32 appears in a single guide and is not independently established by the available official material. Do not advertise a particular maximum until the current documentation and your server build confirm it. Set a value supported by the template, restart, and verify the result with a small test rather than assuming that a larger number will be accepted.

Experience and capture progression
ExpRate controls the experience-rate multiplier described by community configuration guides, while PalCaptureRate controls the capture-rate multiplier. The retrieved guides disagree about possible experience-rate caps, so no universal upper limit can be stated here. Change one rate at a time, keep a record of the old value, and test with a new character or a controlled capture so you can tell whether the server accepted the setting.
Pal population and CPU load
The guide warns that increasing PalSpawnNumRate can increase CPU load. That warning is not accompanied by a benchmark or a documented threshold. Treat the option as a performance-sensitive change: raise it in small increments, observe the server’s CPU and memory usage during normal activity, and revert if players see simulation delays, rubber-banding, or disconnects. A higher spawn multiplier is not automatically an improvement for a busy or low-powered machine.

Other parameters
The current Pocketpair page lists the supported configuration parameters and their documented meanings. Work from the options actually present in your generated template and from that page’s version context. Do not paste a full settings string from an old tutorial simply because it contains more switches; a parameter that was renamed, removed, or assigned a different value type can prevent the server from loading the file correctly.
A disciplined editing workflow
For a small private server, a repeatable workflow is more reliable than changing many multipliers at once.

- Stop and back up. Stop the dedicated-server process and copy
PalWorldSettings.inito a dated backup, such asPalWorldSettings.ini.backup-2026-10-14. Keep the original template as a separate reference. - Define the intended change. Write down whether you are changing identity, access, player capacity, experience, capture, or spawn behavior. This prevents a troubleshooting session from mixing unrelated edits.
- Find the existing assignment. Search the one-line option expression for the parameter name already supplied by your template. Editing an existing assignment is safer than adding a second copy.
- Change only its value. Preserve capitalization, punctuation, quotation style, commas, and parentheses. Do not remove neighboring options while selecting text.
- Save and inspect. Reopen the saved file in the same editor and check that the filename is exactly
PalWorldSettings.ini, the file is in the correct platform folder, and the line still begins with the expectedOptionSettings=(structure. - Restart the server. Start the dedicated server and wait for its normal ready state. Settings are read during startup, so leaving the old process running will not apply the edit.
- Verify in the game. Check the server name or password behavior, join with the intended number of players, or perform the specific progression test associated with the changed rate. Record the observed result beside the backup name.
- Change one variable next. If the result is wrong, restore the backup or revert only the last value before testing another hypothesis.
How to confirm that a change took effect
Verification should match the setting. For a name or password change, leave and rejoin using the new information. For ServerPlayerMaxNum, test the limit with the number of intended concurrent connections rather than inferring success from the file alone. For ExpRate and PalCaptureRate, use the same controlled activity before and after the change; changing several rates simultaneously makes the outcome difficult to attribute. For PalSpawnNumRate, observe both the in-game population and the machine’s resource usage.
If a host provides a live console or status display, use it to confirm that the new process started after the edit. A timestamped backup and a written test result are more useful than repeatedly opening the file and assuming that a saved change was loaded.

The file or folder does not exist
Start the dedicated server once, let initialization finish, and look again under the platform-specific folder. Confirm that you are inspecting the dedicated-server installation, not the client installation. If a hosting panel uses a virtual file tree, ask it to reveal the server’s Pal/Saved/Config directory rather than uploading a file to an unrelated configuration area.
The server starts with old values
- Confirm that the process was fully restarted after saving; settings are loaded at startup.
- Check that the edited file is named
PalWorldSettings.ini, notDefaultPalWorldSettings.iniorPalWorldSettings.ini.txt. - Verify the platform folder:
WindowsServerandLinuxServerare not interchangeable. - Compare the changed parameter with the current template for spelling and capitalization.
- Make sure there is not a second copy of the configuration in another server installation that the launch command actually uses.
The server fails to start after an edit
Stop trying additional changes. Restore the last known-good backup, start the server, and then reapply one small edit. A missing comma, unmatched parenthesis, altered quote, or value in the wrong format can invalidate the long option expression. If the backup starts normally, compare the working and failing files character by character around the changed assignment. Keep the default template available so you can rebuild the active file rather than guessing at syntax.

A password or name change behaves unexpectedly
Check that you changed the parameter already used by your server version and that no duplicate assignment appears earlier or later in the line. Password changes affect the next server process, not users who are already connected to the previous process. Share the new credential only through a private channel and rotate it again if it was exposed.
A rate change produces no obvious difference
Use a repeatable test and allow enough activity for the multiplier to be observable. Confirm that you edited ExpRate, PalCaptureRate, or PalSpawnNumRate as intended rather than a similarly named option. Since community sources conflict about experience-rate limits and do not provide universal defaults, compare your result with the current documentation and your server version instead of assuming a particular cap.
RCON and REST API settings require confirmation
The available material does not verify the default state of RCON or the REST API. Do not assume either interface is enabled or disabled because a tutorial says so. Before exposing an administrative interface, consult the current Pocketpair configuration page for the parameter and security requirements, then restrict access through your firewall and use strong credentials. If the current documentation does not describe a setting for your version, leave the existing template unchanged and obtain version-specific guidance from the server provider.
Keep the configuration maintainable
- Use a dated backup after every successful change.
- Maintain a short change log containing the parameter, old value, new value, restart time, and observed result.
- Apply changes during a maintenance window and notify players before restarting.
- Prefer incremental rate changes over large jumps, especially for spawn-related settings that may increase CPU demand.
- When migrating to a new server version, generate or inspect the new version’s template before carrying values forward; do not blindly overwrite a newer template with an old one.
- Recheck the current Pocketpair documentation after updates, because the unmaintained 0.1.5.1 page cannot establish behavior for a current build.
The community walkthrough that discusses the one-line format and the named rate settings is Supercraft’s PalWorldSettings.ini guide. Use it as practical context, but treat claims it makes about limits or performance as guide-level advice unless the current Pocketpair documentation confirms them.
