Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
On an Apache-based LAMP VPS, configure WP Super Cache in two stages: begin with Simple caching, confirm that anonymous pages are being served from cache, and move to Expert mode only after backing up .htaccess and confirming that Apache mod_rewrite works. Then set cache expiry, garbage collection, preload, exclusions and optional CDN rewriting to match how often your site changes.
This approach reduces PHP and database work for public requests without caching pages that contain personal, login, comment or transaction-specific data.

What WP Super Cache does on a LAMP VPS
WordPress normally builds each uncached page by running PHP, querying the database and assembling the theme and plugins. WP Super Cache generates a static HTML copy of an anonymous page. Apache can then deliver that file for later anonymous requests instead of starting the complete WordPress execution path every time.
The plugin’s cache directory is normally wp-content/cache/. Those files are temporary output, not a place to store uploads, backups, symlinks or application data. Cleanup can remove contents there.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Caching applies to public responses. Logged-in users, commenters and visitors who need personalized or password-protected output should normally bypass the page cache. A shopping cart, account area, membership dashboard or any other stateful feature requires its own carefully designed exclusions.
Jetpack/Automattic documentation describes Apache mod_rewrite delivery as the fastest method, but that description is about the request path, not a guaranteed speed increase for every VPS. The same documentation also presents Simple mode as nearly as fast for many sites and safer because it does not alter .htaccess.
Before you install: VPS and WordPress prerequisites
- An Apache-based LAMP stack: Linux, Apache, MySQL or MariaDB and PHP.
- A working WordPress installation with the site’s public domain or HTTPS address configured.
- WordPress pretty permalinks enabled, so Apache and WordPress agree on URL routing.
- Administrative access to the WordPress dashboard and, for Expert mode, shell or hosting access to back up and restore
.htaccess. - Sufficient disk space for temporary files under
wp-content/cache/.
Do not switch to Expert mode during a high-risk change window. First save a copy of the current .htaccess, record the existing WordPress rewrite block and make sure you can restore the file if Apache starts returning errors or pages stop routing correctly.
Install and enable the plugin
- Sign in to WordPress Admin.
- Open Plugins → Add New.
- Search for WP Super Cache, install it and activate it.
- Open Settings → WP Super Cache.
- On the plugin’s easy settings screen, enable caching and save the change.
Use a logged-out browser or a private window for all initial tests. Your administrator cookie makes you a known user, so your own normal dashboard session is not a valid test of the anonymous page cache.
Choose the caching method: Simple or Expert
| Decision point | Simple caching | Expert caching |
|---|---|---|
| Request path | A small part of WordPress checks whether the visitor is anonymous, then serves an existing supercached file. | Apache mod_rewrite routes eligible anonymous requests directly to a generated file. |
.htaccess changes |
Not required. | Required; generated WP Super Cache rules must be inserted correctly. |
| Performance ceiling | Very close to direct static delivery on many sites, but PHP still performs the cache decision. | Higher ceiling because the request can bypass PHP entirely. |
| Rollback | Disable caching or revert plugin settings. | Restore the backed-up .htaccess and disable the rewrite method if rules fail. |
| Multisite fit | Recommended starting point when network-specific rewrite ordering is uncertain. | Requires careful placement relative to the network’s WordPress rewrite rules. |
| Best use | Most first installations, unfamiliar servers and sites where recoverability matters most. | Administrators who can inspect rewrite rules and test cache hits, misses and exclusions. |
Start with Simple mode
Select Simple caching first. It avoids editing .htaccess and gives you a low-risk way to establish that the plugin can write and serve cache files. This is the right default if you are unsure whether Apache modules, multisite rule ordering or another plugin will interact with rewrite rules.
After changing a setting, save it and clear the existing cache before testing. A stale file from an earlier configuration can make a correct setting appear ineffective.

When Expert mode is appropriate
Expert mode is useful when request volume makes even the PHP cache check significant and you are comfortable managing Apache rewrites. It uses mod_rewrite to send anonymous requests straight to files in the supercache directory.
Back up .htaccess first and verify that mod_rewrite is enabled. Review the generated WPSuperCache block rather than assuming it can be pasted anywhere. It must be positioned correctly relative to WordPress rewrite rules; multisite installations are particularly sensitive to this order.
After enabling Expert mode, test an existing cached page, a page that has just been purged, a logged-in request and a URL with a query string. If any of those behave incorrectly, return to Simple mode or restore the previous .htaccess before investigating further.
Set the baseline options
The official setup guidance lists these as the baseline choices for a normal public WordPress site:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Compress pages — enable it when your Apache/PHP compression arrangement is compatible.
- Don’t cache pages for known users — keep this enabled so logged-in users and commenters do not receive another visitor’s cached output.
- Cache rebuild — enable it so an existing cached copy can continue serving while a fresh copy is generated after an update.
- CDN support — enable only after a CDN hostname and asset-delivery rules are actually configured.
- Extra homepage checks — enable it to reduce the chance that the front page remains stale when WordPress detects a change.
“Known users” includes logged-in users, commenters and visitors whose response depends on authentication, a password or another personal state. If a plugin sets a cookie or appends a query parameter for a personalized response, add an appropriate exclusion instead of relying only on the generic known-user check.
Configure cache lifetime and garbage collection
Garbage collection deletes old cache files from wp-content/cache/. There is no universal expiry value: the correct setting depends on how quickly content changes, how much disk space the VPS has and how much cleanup work Apache and PHP can tolerate.

| Site pattern | Starting approach | What to monitor |
|---|---|---|
| Frequently updated news, community or comment-heavy site | Use a shorter cache timeout and consider a scheduler interval around 600 seconds as a starting point. | Freshness after publishing, comment visibility, cron load and filesystem churn. |
| General business or publishing site | Use the documented 1,800-second timeout as a starting point, then adjust after observing update frequency. | Whether visitors see edits promptly and whether old files accumulate. |
| Mostly static site | Use a much longer timeout or disable routine collection only when disk usage and manual purging are actively monitored. | Available disk space, deployment procedures and the age of cached pages. |
The 1,800-second timeout and 600-second scheduler interval are starting points from the official guide, not guarantees that a page will be refreshed at exactly those times. A purge caused by publishing, editing or commenting can remove affected files earlier.
Never store important files, symlinks or directories under wp-content/cache/. Treat that path as disposable. If the VPS uses a separate filesystem for the cache, verify that its ownership and free-space limits allow the web server to create and remove files.

Use preload when a warm cache matters
Preload visits posts, categories and tags sequentially to generate cache files before visitors request them. It can take a long time on a large site and can create substantial disk and CPU activity while the set is built.
When Preload Mode is enabled, routine garbage collection is disabled during the preload cycle so files are not deleted while the plugin is generating them. That protects the preload process but increases the chance that an unchanged page remains stale. Publishing, editing and commenting can still clear affected cache entries.
The official guide suggests a 2,880-minute (two-day) preload interval when sidebar widgets do not need frequent updates. Treat that as a site-specific starting point. A site with hourly-changing widgets, comments or inventory should use a shorter interval or avoid preloading until its exclusions and invalidation behavior are understood.
Preload checklist
- Estimate how many posts, categories and tags must be visited.
- Check that the VPS has enough CPU, memory, disk I/O and free space for a sequential crawl.
- Schedule preload away from backups, deployments and other heavy jobs.
- Watch for stale sidebar, comment or widget output after the first cycle.
- Stop or shorten preload if it competes with real traffic or fills the cache filesystem.
Configure CDN rewriting only when a CDN is ready
WP Super Cache’s CDN feature rewrites URLs for static files in wp-content and wp-includes to another hostname. PHP files are excluded. With an origin-pull setup, the CDN fetches an asset from the VPS on its first request and serves later requests from edge locations.

- Provision and configure the CDN hostname, DNS and origin rules outside WordPress.
- Open the plugin’s CDN tab.
- Enter the exact hostname and path expected by the CDN.
- Enable rewriting and save the settings.
- Clear the WP Super Cache file cache and purge the CDN’s stored assets if its controls require a separate purge.
- Inspect page source and request a CSS, JavaScript and image asset to confirm that URLs use the intended hostname and still return successful responses.
A CDN changes static-asset delivery; it does not replace page-cache exclusions. Keep logged-in pages, commenters, carts, account areas and other personalized responses out of the anonymous page cache even when their images, stylesheets or scripts come from a CDN.
Verify that the cache is working
Do not judge the configuration from a faster feeling alone. Test a public page while logged out or in a private browser window, then inspect both the generated source and the HTTP response.
- Open a public post or page in a private window.
- Reload it once to allow a cache file to be created.
- View the page source and search for a footer such as
Cached page generated by WP-Super-Cache on YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS. - Inspect response headers with your browser’s network panel or an HTTP client. PHP delivery may include
WP-Super-Cache: Served supercache file from PHP. - Repeat the test after publishing an edit and after clearing the cache. The changed page should be regenerated rather than showing the previous content indefinitely.
- Test a logged-in request separately. It should not receive the anonymous visitor’s cached HTML.
Header wording can vary with the delivery method and server configuration, so absence of one marker is not by itself proof of failure. Confirm that a cache file is being generated, that a second anonymous request can use it and that exclusions behave as intended.
Troubleshoot pages that remain dynamic or stale
The cache directory is not writable
If no cache files are created, check ownership and permissions on wp-content/cache/ and its parent directories. The Apache/PHP user must be able to create, read and remove temporary files. Correct the filesystem permissions using your VPS’s normal least-privilege practice, then clear the plugin cache and test again.
Permalinks or rewrite support are missing
Pretty permalinks must be active for normal WordPress routing. In Expert mode, confirm that Apache has mod_rewrite enabled and that the virtual host permits the relevant .htaccess directives. A syntax error or misplaced WPSuperCache block can produce HTTP 500 errors or route requests incorrectly; restore the backup immediately, then return to Simple mode while diagnosing the rule set.
A cookie or query parameter excludes the URL
Cookies and query strings can identify a personalized or otherwise uncacheable response. Check the plugin’s exclusion settings and the page’s actual request URL. Do not remove an exclusion merely to obtain a cache hit if doing so could expose private or user-specific data.

Compression conflicts with another layer
Apache mod_deflate or PHP zlib compression can interfere with operation in some configurations. If enabling Compress pages produces malformed output, missing content or inconsistent headers, disable that option temporarily and test with compression managed by only one layer. Review Apache and PHP error logs for the failing request.
Content is stale after an edit
Clear the WP Super Cache file cache, confirm that Extra homepage checks and cache rebuild are enabled, and check whether a long preload interval or a CDN still holds an older static asset. Purge the CDN separately when its cache is independent of the WordPress file cache.
Expert mode breaks the site
Restore the saved .htaccess, disable Expert mode and verify that the site loads in Simple mode. Then inspect the generated rewrite block, its position relative to the WordPress rules and the multisite-specific ordering before trying again.
Multisite considerations
WP Super Cache uses a global wp-content/advanced-cache.php drop-in. Because that file loads across the network, network-aware activation is recommended for WordPress Multisite.
Activate and configure the plugin from the network’s administrative context according to your site’s permissions model. Simple mode is the safer starting point when you want to avoid network-specific .htaccess complexity. If you choose Expert mode, verify rewrite ordering for the network and test more than one site, including a logged-out page, a logged-in dashboard and a URL that should be excluded.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not assume that a rule tested on the main site is correct for mapped domains, subdirectory sites or different permalink structures. The global drop-in and shared cache behavior make network-wide testing essential.
A practical configuration sequence
- Back up
.htaccessand confirm WordPress permalinks work. - Install and activate WP Super Cache from Plugins → Add New and Settings → WP Super Cache.
- Enable caching in Simple mode.
- Enable page compression only if it does not conflict with the existing Apache/PHP compression setup.
- Keep known-user bypass, cache rebuild and extra homepage checks enabled.
- Set an initial timeout: 1,800 seconds for a general site, about 600 seconds as a scheduler starting point for frequently updated sites, or a longer value for mostly static content.
- Clear the cache and verify source markers and response behavior in a private window.
- Configure preload only after measuring the site’s content count, disk capacity and update pattern; a 2,880-minute interval is one documented starting point when widgets are stable.
- Configure CDN rewriting only after the CDN hostname and origin are working, then clear both relevant caches.
- Consider Expert mode only if the PHP check is a demonstrated bottleneck and you can safely manage Apache rewrites.
How to decide whether to stay in Simple mode
Stay with Simple mode when the VPS has adequate capacity, the site is already serving acceptable response times, the administrator is not comfortable editing Apache rules, or the installation is a complex multisite. The mode avoids .htaccess changes and is easier to roll back.
Move to Expert mode when you have a tested backup and restore process, working mod_rewrite, clear cache exclusions and a monitoring plan for errors and stale content. Its advantage is a shorter request path for eligible anonymous pages, not permission to cache every response indiscriminately.
