On a Rust server, the “missile silo timer” is the server wipe timer. It is controlled by the wipetimer convars, the server’s wipe-frequency tag, and—if needed—a one-time Unix-timestamp override. Set the recurring schedule in the configuration file your host uses, reload that configuration, and run PrintWipe to confirm what the server is actually using.
What the missile silo timer controls
Hosts commonly call the countdown at the Missile Silo the “missile silo timer,” but Rust’s official terminology is the Server Wipe Timer. The timer is tied to the server wipe schedule rather than to a separate Missile Silo gameplay setting. Changing the wipe schedule therefore changes when the timer is calculated for the next wipe.

- Wipe frequency: the server’s wipe tag, such as weekly, biweekly or monthly.
- Day:
wipetimer.wipeDayofWeek, using a numeric day value. - Hour:
wipetimer.wipeHourofDay, in 24-hour notation and capable of using decimals. - Time zone:
wipetimer.wipeTimezone, whose interpretation depends on the server or hosting environment.
A one-off date can replace the recurring calculation with wipetimer.wipeUnixTimestampOverride. Some server builds also expose wipetimer.wipecronoverride for an override based on the timer’s cron configuration.
Before changing anything
Make a copy of the active configuration file and record the current values. A typo in a convar name can leave the old schedule active, while an incorrect time-zone assumption can move a wipe by several hours.

- Confirm that you are editing the server instance that players use, not a staging or test instance.
- Find out whether your host loads
server.cfgorserverauto.cfg. Hosts do not use the same filename. - Check which time basis the host applies to
wipetimer.wipeTimezone,wipetimer.wipeDayofWeekandwipetimer.wipeHourofDay. Published hosting instructions disagree: one describes local machine time, while another describes UTC. - Check that the current map includes the Missile Silo monument. The timer object may not exist on a map without that monument.
- Keep console access available so you can run
server.readcfgandPrintWipeafter the edit.
How Rust calculates the recurring schedule

Facepunch’s default configuration is aligned with the normal force-wipe schedule, so a server that follows the default pattern usually does not need custom timer values. Custom schedules are useful when a community deliberately wipes on a different day or at a different hour.
Choose a recurring wipe schedule
Weekly
A weekly schedule recalculates the timer every week. One documented setup uses the server tag command followed by a configuration write:

server.writecfgRun the command in the server console or use the equivalent field in your control panel. If the panel has a dedicated “wipe frequency” selector, use that selector instead of manually entering a tag; panels may format tags differently.
Biweekly
Biweekly means one wipe every two weeks. The timer supports this recurrence, but the exact tag value is not consistently shown in hosting interfaces. Select “biweekly” in the panel when that option exists, or use the tag value documented for your Rust server build. Do not guess a tag and assume it worked—confirm the resulting schedule with PrintWipe.
Monthly
Monthly schedules calculate a recurring wipe once per month. Month lengths vary, so the server should be allowed to calculate the next occurrence rather than relying on a hand-written number of days. Use the panel’s monthly option or the current Facepunch documentation for the appropriate tag syntax, then verify the next date in the console.

Set the wipe day
Set wipetimer.wipeDayofWeek to the numeric day used by your server build. The commonly documented mapping is:

The default is often reported as Thursday, but that detail is not guaranteed across every configuration or version. Treat the value shown by your server as authoritative.
For example, a Friday schedule would use:
wipetimer.wipeDayofWeek 5Whether that means Friday in your intended region depends on the configured time zone. If the server evaluates the value in UTC and your community plans in another zone, a late-evening local wipe can appear on the next UTC day.
Set the wipe hour
wipetimer.wipeHourofDay uses a 24-hour clock. Whole numbers are straightforward: 0 is midnight, 12 is noon and 18 is 6 p.m. Decimals are allowed. For example, 14.5 represents 2:30 p.m. in the timer’s configured time basis.
wipetimer.wipeHourofDay 14.5Use a decimal fraction of an hour rather than minutes after a colon. Thirty minutes is .5; fifteen minutes is .25; forty-five minutes is .75. Confirm the displayed next-wipe time after saving, because a host that interprets the setting in UTC will display a different local clock time.

Set the time zone carefully
The time-zone setting is the most important point to confirm with your host. Guidance for Rust hosting is inconsistent: Lone Design describes the timer as using the local machine’s time, while BisectHosting describes the day and hour settings as UTC. Those statements cannot both describe every hosting environment.
Ask support a specific question: “Are wipetimer.wipeDayofWeek and wipetimer.wipeHourofDay evaluated in UTC, the host machine’s local time, or a zone selected by wipetimer.wipeTimezone?” Then schedule a test far enough in the future to observe the reported time without affecting an active wipe cycle.
Do not convert the hour twice. If the host already applies UTC, enter the UTC hour and convert only when communicating the time to players. If the host uses local machine time, enter the local hour that the host documents. Use PrintWipe as the final check.
Edit the correct configuration file
Hosts using server.cfg
Several hosting panels place persistent server settings in a file named server.cfg. Open the panel’s file manager, locate that file, and add or update the wipe-timer lines. Keep one active line per convar so an older value cannot silently override the one you intended.

wipetimer.wipeTimezone {{HOST_DOCUMENTED_TIMEZONE}}The double-curly value is a reminder to insert the exact zone or value documented by your host; it is not a literal Rust command. If your host does not require a time-zone value, leave that convar at the host’s documented default rather than inventing one.

Hosts using serverauto.cfg
Some panels write automatic settings to serverauto.cfg instead. Edit that file when the host identifies it as the active configuration. After saving, apply the file with:
server.readcfgA panel may also require a restart before the timer object is recreated. Follow the panel’s documented reload order; do not repeatedly restart a live server while troubleshooting a simple syntax error.
Apply the recurring settings
- Stop automatic restarts or maintenance tasks that could overwrite the file while you edit it.
- Open the active configuration file identified by your host:
server.cfgorserverauto.cfg. - Set the wipe tag or panel frequency to weekly, biweekly or monthly.
- Set
wipetimer.wipeDayofWeekandwipetimer.wipeHourofDay. - Set
wipetimer.wipeTimezoneonly after confirming the host’s time basis. - Save the file. If the host supports it, run
server.writecfgafter changing a console setting so the value is persisted. - Run
server.readcfgwhen the host instructs you to reload configuration, or restart the server if that is the host’s required apply method. - Run
PrintWipeand compare the reported day and time with the schedule you intended.
Schedule a single, one-off wipe
Use a Unix timestamp when you need one specific wipe instant instead of a recurring weekday and hour—for example, for an event weekend or a one-time administrative wipe. A Unix timestamp is the number of seconds from the Unix epoch. Generate it with a trusted Unix-timestamp converter for the exact date, time and zone you intend, then enter the resulting integer:

wipetimer.wipeUnixTimestampOverride {{UNIX_TIMESTAMP}}Replace {{UNIX_TIMESTAMP}} with the generated number. The timestamp represents an instant, so converting a local calendar time to UTC incorrectly can shift the wipe. Check the converter’s zone selection and then verify the server’s interpretation with PrintWipe.
An override takes precedence over the normal schedule. Once the one-off wipe has passed, remove the override or disable the override mechanism so the server can return to its weekly, biweekly or monthly calculation. If your build exposes wipetimer.wipecronoverride, use the current server documentation to determine its accepted value before changing it; the convar name alone does not establish whether the value should be a timestamp, a Boolean or a cron expression.

Verify the timer in game and console
Run:
PrintWipeThe command prints the current wipe-timer setup. Check the reported recurrence, day, hour and next calculated time rather than relying only on the text in the configuration file. This catches an incorrectly named convar, a file that was not loaded, a tag that was not persisted, and a time-zone conversion error.
If the console reports WipeTimer not found!, the timer object is not available on the current map. The map may not contain the Missile Silo monument. In that case, changing the convars will not make a missing monument appear; load a map that includes the monument if that is a requirement for your server.
Troubleshoot a timer that did not change
The old date is still displayed
- Confirm that you edited the active file, not a similarly named backup or template.
- Run
server.readcfgor perform the host-required restart. - Check spelling and capitalization in
wipetimer.wipeDayofWeek,wipetimer.wipeHourofDayandwipetimer.wipeTimezone. - Search the file for duplicate lines. Remove stale values so only the intended setting remains.
- Run
PrintWipeagain after the reload.
The wipe occurs on the wrong day
First check the numeric mapping, especially the Sunday-as-0 convention. Then check the time zone. A wipe scheduled near midnight can cross into the next calendar day when the server calculates in UTC but the community is using local time.
The wipe occurs at the wrong hour
Check that you used 24-hour notation and a decimal fraction for minutes. For 2:30 p.m., use 14.5, not 2:30 or 14:30. If the number is correct, resolve whether the host evaluates it in UTC or local machine time.
The recurring schedule is ignored
Look for an active Unix-timestamp override. A valid wipetimer.wipeUnixTimestampOverride takes precedence over the normal calculation. Remove the override after a one-off event and reload the configuration. Also confirm that the wipe-frequency tag was saved; a console-only change may be lost unless you run server.writecfg or edit the persistent file.
PrintWipe says “WipeTimer not found!”
This message indicates that the timer object cannot be found on the loaded map. Verify the map and its monuments before changing schedule values. A configuration edit cannot create the Missile Silo monument on a map that does not include it.

Operational checklist
- Identify the active configuration filename.
- Choose weekly, biweekly or monthly recurrence, or decide that a one-off timestamp is more appropriate.
- Set the numeric day and 24-hour decimal hour.
- Confirm whether the host uses UTC or local machine time.
- Save the file and apply it with the host’s reload or restart procedure.
- Run
PrintWipeand record the reported next wipe. - Remove any expired timestamp override.
- Check the map if the console reports that the wipe timer cannot be found.
What to communicate to players
Publish the time zone with the wipe announcement, not just a clock time. “Friday at 14:30 UTC” is unambiguous; “Friday at 2:30” is not. If your host uses local machine time, name that zone explicitly and recheck it after host maintenance or a migration, because moving the server can change the machine’s local setting even when the Rust convars remain unchanged.
