Set Rust’s relationshipmanager.maxteamsize convar to the largest team you want to allow. Add relationshipmanager.maxteamsize 4 to server.cfg for a four-player limit, or enter the same command in the server console. The guides consulted list 8 as the default; setting the value to 0 disables teams for a solo-only server.
The setting that controls Rust team size
Rust uses the relationshipmanager.maxteamsize convar to limit the number of players who can belong to one in-game team. The number is the maximum team size, not the number of teams allowed on the server. For example, a value of 3 permits teams of up to three players while still allowing any number of separate teams, subject to the server’s other limits and resources.

Community hosting guides consulted in 2026 consistently identify 8 as the normal default. That is a configuration default, not a published survey result, and a host, mod, or game mode can change the effective value. Always verify the live value after changing it.

Use the complete, prefixed name exactly as shown. Several newer guides warn that older instructions using only maxteamsize may do nothing. One help article shows the unprefixed form, but its behavior is not confirmed here; treat it as unverified and use relationshipmanager.maxteamsize.

Before changing the limit
Confirm that you control the server configuration
You need administrator access to the dedicated-server console, an authenticated RCON connection, or the control panel supplied by your host. A normal player cannot change a server convar from the in-game chat box. If you rent a server, look for a file manager, startup configuration editor, Web Console, or RCON section. Names differ between hosts, but the command itself is the same.
Choose a value that matches the server’s rules
Decide whether the limit should apply to a normal wipe, an event, or a specific game mode. Lowering the number can prevent very large groups from sharing team markers and team-management features. Raising it changes the social scale of the server but does not increase the number of players your hardware, network connection, or server slot setting can support.
Back up the configuration
Before editing a file, copy the current server.cfg contents or download a backup from the host panel. Keep a note of the previous value so you can restore it if a plugin, mode, or community rule depends on the old setting. Avoid changing unrelated convars in the same maintenance window; isolating the edit makes a later problem easier to diagnose.
Method 1: set the limit in server.cfg
Putting the convar in server.cfg makes the setting part of the server’s normal startup configuration. The exact folder path varies by operating system, server wrapper, and hosting provider, so use the configuration file that your launch script actually loads.
- Stop the Rust server or place it into the host’s maintenance state. Stopping first avoids a panel overwriting your edit while the process is running.
- Open the server’s
server.cfgin the file manager or a text editor. - Add one line containing the full convar and the desired integer. For a four-player cap, use
relationshipmanager.maxteamsize 4. - Keep the line plain: use one space between the name and number, do not add quotation marks, and do not append a comment on the same line unless your configuration system explicitly supports comments.
- Save the file using ordinary text encoding. Do not save an HTML page or a rich-text document with a
.cfgextension. - Start the server and wait until it has completed startup.
- Verify the live value from the server console or RCON before announcing the new rule.
A minimal file can look like this:
relationshipmanager.maxteamsize 4If your existing file contains other settings, leave them in place and add the team-size line on its own line. A duplicate entry can be confusing: the last value loaded generally wins, but wrappers and plugins may load additional files afterward. Keep one authoritative entry wherever possible.

Method 2: change it from the server console
Console changes are useful for testing a proposed limit or changing it for a live event. The command is identical to the one in the configuration file.

- Open the dedicated-server console supplied by your operating system, host panel, or server wrapper.
- Enter
relationshipmanager.maxteamsize 4, replacing4with the limit you want. - Press Enter and watch for an error or an acknowledgment in the console.
- Query the convar again, using the console’s normal variable-query syntax, to confirm that the running process holds the intended value.
A live console change may not be written back to server.cfg. If the setting must survive the next restart, put the same line in the file as well. Otherwise, a restart can restore the previous value.
Method 3: use Web Console or RCON
Most server-control panels expose a Web Console, and many administrators use RCON clients instead. The consulted guides report that most convars can be set live through these interfaces. Because panel implementations differ, treat the live-apply behavior as something to verify on your particular server.
- Sign in to the host panel with an account that has console or RCON permission.
- Open Web Console, RCON Console, or the equivalent administration screen.
- Send
relationshipmanager.maxteamsize 4. - Read the console response. If the panel reports an unknown command, check spelling and whether it is connected to the Rust server rather than a proxy or service manager.
- Reconnect a test player or inspect the convar to confirm the effective setting.
- Record the command in
server.cfgif you want it to persist after a restart.
Never paste an RCON password into a public chat, ticket, screenshot, or startup command that other users can read. Use the host’s secret storage where available, and revoke or rotate the password if it has been exposed.
Applying a server.cfg edit without a restart
One hosting guide describes using readcfg to reload configuration after editing server.cfg, so the new value can take effect without a full process restart. The confidence in this workflow is lower than for the convar name itself, and wrappers can handle readcfg differently.

- Save the updated
server.cfg. - Open the server console, Web Console, or an authorized RCON session.
- Run
readcfg. - Query or otherwise inspect
relationshipmanager.maxteamsizeto confirm the value changed. - Test with an administrator account or a controlled group before treating the change as live policy.
If readcfg is rejected, produces no visible result, or the value immediately changes back, perform a controlled restart instead. A restart is the more portable method because it does not depend on the host wrapper’s implementation.
How to verify the effective team limit
Do not rely only on the line you typed. A mode, plugin, launch parameter, or later configuration file can override it. Verification should happen after startup, after a reload, and after any scheduled wipe or mode change that might rewrite settings.
- Check the spelling: the name must be
relationshipmanager.maxteamsize, including therelationshipmanager.prefix. - Check the value: confirm that the running server reports the number you intended, rather than the number still present in a panel template.
- Test the boundary: have a group attempt to add the player who would occupy the next position. The expected result is that the server permits members up to the limit and rejects the next addition.
- Repeat after restart: a console-only change may disappear if it was never saved to
server.cfg. - Check after a mode switch: Softcore and other game-mode controls can establish their own team-size behavior.
Softcore and other game-mode overrides
The Facepunch Rust Wiki’s server-gamemodes material states that Softcore sets the maximum team size to four players and that the relationshipmanager.maxteamsize convar can override that value. In practice, this means the number shown in your base configuration may not be the final number while a mode is active.
If you want the Softcore limit
Use relationshipmanager.maxteamsize 4 and verify the live value after Softcore starts. This makes your intention explicit even when the mode’s documented limit is already four.
If you want a different Softcore limit
Set the convar after the mode has loaded, then test it. If the mode applies its own setting later in the startup sequence, place your command in the configuration mechanism that runs after the mode initialization, or reapply it through the console. The exact ordering depends on your server wrapper and installed extensions, so verification is essential.

If the value changes unexpectedly
Compare the startup log, mode configuration, plugin configuration, and server.cfg. Look for a second occurrence of the convar or a scheduled command. Remove duplicate entries only after identifying which component is intended to own the rule.
Creating a solo-only Rust server
Set relationshipmanager.maxteamsize 0 when you want to disable teams. The consulted guides describe zero as the special value for a solo-only server, rather than as “no limit.” Do not use zero if your goal is unlimited team size.
- Add
relationshipmanager.maxteamsize 0toserver.cfg, or enter it in the server console. - Restart, or use the verified reload procedure for your host.
- Confirm the live value is zero.
- Test team creation and invitations with an administrator account before opening the server to the public.
- Update the server description, rules, and moderation guidance so players know that teaming is disabled.
A solo limit affects the team system controlled by this convar. It does not automatically prevent players from communicating, forming informal alliances, sharing bases, trading, or coordinating outside the game’s team feature. If your community prohibits those behaviors, state and moderate those rules separately.

These values describe the team cap only. They do not set maximum server population, clan size, party size in a plugin, or the number of simultaneous teams.

The command is ignored
Re-enter the fully qualified name: relationshipmanager.maxteamsize. Check for missing punctuation, an accidental hyphen, or a typographical variation such as relationshipmanager.maxteamsize=4 when the console expects a space. The unprefixed maxteamsize form is not established as reliable.

The file contains the setting, but the server still uses another number
Confirm that you edited the file loaded by the running instance. Multi-server hosts often have one configuration directory per server identity. Also search for duplicate occurrences in mode files, plugin configuration, launch scripts, and panel overrides. The last command executed during startup can determine the effective value.
The value works until a restart
You probably changed it only in the live console. Add the same line to server.cfg, save it, and restart once to confirm persistence. A host panel may regenerate the file from a template; if so, change the template or the panel’s dedicated convar field.
readcfg does nothing
Use a controlled restart. The no-restart reload behavior is reported by one host guide, not guaranteed for every wrapper. Confirm that the file was saved before issuing the reload and that the command was sent to the Rust process, not to a shell or proxy.
Softcore resets the value
Check the mode’s startup order and reapply the convar after the mode has loaded. Verify again after each restart or mode transition. If a plugin enforces a team rule, change that plugin’s setting instead of repeatedly fighting its override.
Players can still cooperate on a solo server
The zero setting disables the in-game team system; it cannot police every form of cooperation. Publish a clear rule for external communication, shared bases, and alliances if your solo format restricts them, and enforce that rule through your normal moderation process.
Operational checklist
- Choose the intended maximum and decide whether the server should be solo-only.
- Back up the existing configuration.
- Use
relationshipmanager.maxteamsizewith a numeric value. - Save the line in the correct
server.cfgfor persistence. - Optionally apply the same command in the console, Web Console, or RCON.
- Use
readcfgonly if your host confirms that it reloads this file correctly; otherwise restart. - Query and test the live value, including the boundary player.
- Check Softcore or other mode settings for an override.
- Document the rule in the server description and moderation policy.
- Recheck after restarts, wipes, updates, and panel-template changes.
What to remember
The reliable configuration string is relationshipmanager.maxteamsize. Put it in server.cfg for a persistent policy, or issue it through an authorized console for an immediate test. The commonly documented default is eight, zero is the special solo-only value, and Softcore is documented with a four-player limit that the convar can override. Because live settings can be changed by game modes, plugins, and hosting wrappers, verify the effective value instead of assuming that a saved line is the final rule.
